I was attacked by a tiger shark in late Octber 1997. It was near my hme n the island f Kauai—a typical fall mrning with friends. The waves were really gd, s nthing was stpping us.
That is until a large shark came right up under me and sank his teeth int my lwer leg. There had been n splashing. n nise, and I felt n pain, nly great pressure n my lwer bdy.
Then I fllwed my instinct: I punched the shark in the face, again and again which happens t be what the expert advice, until the shark released me. As I swam back int shre, I felt my lwer right leg spasming(痉挛). When I lked dwn, I realized it was gne. The shark had bit my lwer leg ff. My friends rushed t my aid, and rushed me t hspital.
It was anther day befre the “fg” lifted, at which pint I pened my eyes and realized I was in the hspital—a belw-the-knee amputee(截肢). Fr the next few bedridden weeks, I spent time with my family, and cnsidered the future.
As sn as I was given the OK by my dctrs, I did what many f us might cnsider unthinkable: I started riding the waves again. In fact, my first time back was near the site f his attack. I was unshaken and curius—Was it because f the tides? The phase f the mn? I als recalled that the mrning f the attack the water had a fishy smell. Was that what attracted the shark?
I was determined t research sharks, and I did learn smething that wuld change my life: Humans are far mre dangerus t sharks than the ther way arund, I tell Reader’s Digest. “I watched a dcumentary called Sharkwater, and I learned abut the demand fr shark fin sup and the fact that 70 millin sharks a year are killed fr their fins alne.”
My unique situatin as a shark survivr empwered me t give sharks a vice. I began wrking with the Hawaii state legislature t help pass a ban n shark-derived prducts. I partnered with ther like-minded shark attack survivrs and marine bilgists, and we headed t Washingtn t urge senatrs t create a natinwide bill prtecting sharks.

A physical checkup ften begins with a series f questins: What fds d yu eat? D yu smke? Getting any exercise? New research suggests anther telling indicatr culd be added t that list: What was yur cllege majr? The study finds ne’s chsen field f cllege study is a statistically significant predictr f health in midlife.
The researchers find the fur majrs assciated with the best midlife health are architecture/engineering, bilgy/life sciences, business, and—here’s a surprise—cmmunicatins/jurnalism. Perhaps chasing after big stries keeps us jurnalists in shape.
It has lng been established that peple with mre educatin tend t be healthier. But des ne’s majr matter? T find ut, the researchers analyzed data frm the natinally representative American Cmmunity Survey.
Their sample cnsisted f 3.7 millin United States-brn adults between the ages f 45 and 64—the time f life when physical functining prblems start t appear. Participants nted whether they had difficulty walking r climbing stairs, dressing r bathing. A “yes” answer in any f thse categries resulted in a grade f relatively pr health.
The researchers fcused n the 667,362 participants wh earned a bachelr’s degree, but went n further in their educatin. They nted each persn’s cllege majr, which they placed int ne f 15 categries. They fund substantial differences in health acrss majrs. Tw majrs are particularly disadvantaged in midlife. The chances f pr health are 1.9 times greater amng psychlgy /scial wrk and law/public plicy majrs cmpared t business majrs. The researchers argue this is likely due t several factrs. Psychlgy majrs tend t suffer frm high unemplyment and lw earnings. Law/public plicy majrs ften enter the field f law enfrcement(执行).
The researchers say that they have discvered assciatins, nt prf f causality(因果关系). But they make a cnvincing case that sme majrs lead peple t live healthier lifestyles than thers.
Their findings might even inspire a warning cuntry sng: Mammas, dn’t let yur babies grw up t be psychlgy majrs.
28.What can be learned frm the first tw paragraphs?

Space is becming mre crwded. On December 3, a Falcn 9 rcket made by Space X thundered int the sky. On bard were 64 small satellites, mre than any American cmpany had launched befre in ne g. They have a variety f uses, frm space-based-radar t the mnitring f radi-frequency-emissins. They will be wrking in their rbits(轨道).
These bjects are part f the latest breed f lw-Earth-rbit (LEO) satellites. This launch is just taste f what is planned. Space X and One Web, a cmmunicatins firm, plan t launch satellites in their thusands, nt hundreds. The pair are set t duble the ttal number f satellites in rbit by 2027.
That prmises t change things dramatically n Earth. LEO satellites can bring internet cnnectivity t places where it is still unavailable r unaffrdable. This will als be a lasting surce f new demand fr the space ecnmy. Mrgan Stanley, a bank, prjects that the space industry will grw frm $350 billin in 2016 t mre than $1.1 trillin by 2040. New internet satellites will accunt fr a half this increase.
Fr that t happen, hwever, three wrries must be vercme. Debris (碎片) is the mst familiar cncern. As lng ag as 1978, Dnald Kessler, a scientist at NASA, prpsed a situatin in which, when enugh satellites were packed int lw-Earth rbits, any cllisin culd cause a chain reactin which wuld eventually destry all space craft in the same rbital plane. The syndrme which bears Mr. Kessler’s name weighs heavily n the minds f executives at the new satellite firms. Debris culd cause entire tracts (广阔的一片) f space t be unusable fr decades.
Slutins exist. One is t grab malfunctin satellites and pull them dwn int Earth’s atmsphere. Anther is t mnitr space mre intensively fr debris; a US Air Frce prgram me called Space Fence is due t start in 2019. But technlgy is nly part f the answer. Rules are needed t gvern the safe dispsal f ld satellites frm lw-Earth rbit.
Cyber-security is a secnd, lng-standing wrry. Hackers culd take cntrl f a satellite and seal intellectual prperty, redirect data flws r cause a cllisin. The satellite industry has been slw t respnd t such cncerns. But as mre f the wrld’s ppulatin cmes t rely n the infrastructure f space fr access t the internet, the need fr actin intensifies.
The third issue fllws frm the first tw. If a simple mistake r a cyber-attack can cause a chain reactin which wipes ut hundreds f billins f dllars f investment, wh is liable? Underwriters (承保商) are studying the plans f firms (quite a lt) that wish t perate large numbers f satellites. But there is a lng way t g befre the risks are well understd, let alne priced.
As space becmes mre cmmercialized, mind-bending prspects pen up: packages mved acrss the planet in minutes by rcket rather than by plane, equipment sent t ther small planets, passengers launched int rbit and beynd. All that and mre may cme, ne day. But such activities wuld raise the same questins as LEO satellites d. They must be answered befre the space ecnmy can truly develp.
32.What infrmatin can we get abut LEO satellites frm the passage?
A.They are suppsed t regulate the space ecnmy.
B.They are expected t increase in large numbers.
C.They are intended t bring internet cnnectivity t remte areas.
D.They are designed t mve beynd the Earth as far as pssible.
33.What des the underlined wrd “plane” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A.Aircraft.B.Surface.C.Flight.D.Entrance.
34.Which f the fllwing can be classified as the third wrry?
A.Lack f satellite industry regulatins.B.Lss f intellectual prperty.
C.Crisis f cnfidence in the field.D.Slw respnse t satellite industry.
35.What is the authr’s attitude tward the launch f LEO satellites?
A.It shuld be further cnfirmed fr its wnership.
B.It shuld be cntinued because f its advantages.
C.It shuld be dne carefully t avid ptential risks.
D.It shuld be stpped in the face f the space ecnmy.
