Everyne has a mment in histry, which belngs particularly t him. It is the mment when his emtins achieve their mst pwerful sway ver him, and afterward when yu say t this persn “the wrld tday” r “life” r “reality” he will assume that yu mean this mment, even if it is fifty years past. The wrld, thrugh his unleashed (释放的) emtins, imprinted itself upn him, and he carries the stamp f that passing mment frever.
Fr me, this mment—fur years in a mment in histry—was the war. The war was and is reality fr me. I still instinctively live and think in its atmsphere. These are sme f its characteristics: Franklin Delan Rsevelt is the president f the United States, and he always has been. The ther tw eternal wrld leaders are Winstn Churchill and Jseph Stalin. America is nt, never has been, and never will be what the sng and pems call it, a land f plenty. Nyln, meat, gasline, and steel are rare. There are t many jbs and nt enugh wrkers. Mney is very easy t earn but rather hard t spend, because there isn’t very much t buy. Trains are always late and always crwded with “service men”. The war will always be fught very far frm America, and it will never end. Nthing in America stands still fr very lng, including the peple wh are always either leaving r n leave. Peple in America cry ften. Sixteen is the key and crucial and natural age fr a human being t be, and peple f all ther ages are ranged in an rderly manner ahead f and behind yu as a harmnius setting fr the sixteen-year-lds f the wrld.
When yu are sixteen, adults are slightly impressed and almst intimidated by yu. This is a puzzle finally slved by the realizatin that they fresee yur military future: fighting fr them. Yu d nt fresee it. T waste anything in America is immral. String and tinfil are treasures. Newspapers are always crwed with strange maps and names f twns, and every few mnths the earth seems t lurch (突然倾斜) frm its path when yu see smething in the newspapers, such as the time Musslini, wh almst seemed ne f the eternal leaders, is phtgraphed hanging upside dwn n a meat hk.

26.Which statement best describes the authr’s feelings abut the war?

    B. Sixteen-year-lds d nt waste things.
    C. Sixteen-year-lds read newspapers.
    D. They will be fighting sn fr adults.

The term Hudsn River schl was applied t the fremst representatives f nineteenth-century Nrth American landscape painting. Apparently unknwn during the glden days f the American landscape mvement, which began arund 1850 and lasted until the late1860's, the Hudsn River schl seems t have emerged in the 1870's as a direct result f the struggle between the ld and the new generatins f artists, each t assert its wn style as there presentative American art. The lder painters, mst f whm were brn befre 1835, practiced in a mde ften self-taught and mnplized by landscape subject matter and were securely established in and fstered by the reigning American art rganizatin, the Natinal Academy f Design.
The yunger painters returning hme frm training in Eurpe wrked mre with figural subject matter and in a bld and impressinistic technique; their prspects fr patrnage in their wn cuntry were uncertain, and they sught t attract it by attaining academic recgnitin in New Yrk. One f the results f the cnflict between the tw factins was that what in previus years had been referred t as the American, native, r, ccasinally, New Yrk schl — the mst representative schl f American art in any genre — had by 1890 becme firmly established in the minds f critics and public alike as the Hudsn River schl.
The sbriquet was first applied arund 1879. While it was nt intended as flattering, it was hardly inapprpriate. The Academicians at whm it was aimed had wrked and scialized in New Yrk, the Hudsn's prt city, and had painted the river and its shres with varying frequency. Mst imprtant, perhaps, was that they had all maintained with a certain fidelity a manner f technique and cmpsitin cnsistent with thse f America's first ppular landscape artist, Thmas Cle, wh built a career painting the Catskill Muntain scenery brdering the Hudsn River.
A pssible implicatin in the term applied t the grup f landscapists was that many f them had, like Cle, lived n r near the banks f the Hudsn. Further, the river had lng served as the principal rute t ther sketching grunds favred by the Academicians, particularly the Adirndacks and the muntains f Vermnt and New Hampshire different ways.

Cinciding with the grundbreaking thery f bilgical evlutin prpsed by British naturalist Charles Darwin in the 1860s, British scial philspher Herbert Spencer put frward his wn thery f bilgical and cultural evlutin. Spencer argued that all wrldly phenmena, including human scieties, changed ver time, advancing tward perfectin. 36 .

Bas felt that the culture f any sciety must be understd as the result f a unique histry and nt as ne f many cultures belnging t a brader evlutinary stage r type f culture. 39 .
Histrical particularism became a dminant apprach t the study f culture in American anthrplgy, largely thrugh the influence f many students f Bas. But a number f anthrplgists in the early 1900s als rejected the particularist thery f culture in favr f diffusinism. Sme attributed virtually every imprtant cultural achievement t the inventins f a few, especially gifted peples that, accrding t diffusinists, then spread t ther cultures. 40 .

    A. Other anthrplgists believed that cultural innvatins, such as inventins, had a single rigin and passed frm sciety t sciety. This thery was knwn as diffusinism.
    B. In rder t study particular cultures as cmpletely as pssible, Bas became skilled in linguistics, the study f languages, and in physical anthrplgy, the study f human bilgy and anatmy.
    C. He argued that human evlutin was characterized by a struggle he called the "survival f the fittest," in which weaker races and scieties must eventually be replaced by strnger, mre advanced races and scieties.
    D. They als fcused n imprtant rituals that appeared t preserve a peple's scial structure, such as initiatin ceremnies that frmally signify children's entrance int adulthd.
    E. Thus, in his view, diverse aspects f culture, such as the structure f families, frms f marriage, categries f kinship, wnership f prperty, frms f gvernment, technlgy, and systems f fd prductin, all changed as scieties evlved.
    F. Supprters f the thery viewed as a cllectin f integrated parts that wrk tgether t keep a sciety functining.
    G. Fr example, British anthrplgists Graftn Ellit Smith and W. J. Perry incrrectly suggested, n the basis f inadequate infrmatin, that farming, pttery making, and metallurgy all riginated in ancient Egypt and diffused thrughut the wrld.
