Lilyma Khan recalls that she desired t be a chef fr as lng as she can remember. When she was arund three years ld, she’d watch her father ck fr the entire neighburhd, and the simple dishes wuld cmfrt and nurish(滋养) everyne in their area f Taimr Nagar, New Delhi.

In the study, the researchers divided the study int tw parts. Fr the first experiment, the researchers asked each participant t sit alne in a rm fr 10 minutes withut any access t digital devices. In the absence f any particular prmpt (提示), the participants were asked t speak ut their thughts alud in real time. The recrded files frm 81 participants were then analyzed.
The researchers assessed the participants’ creativity thrugh a thinking test, a lab-based verbal test that measures a persn’s ability t think utside f the bx. Participants wh perfrmed well in the thinking test had thughts that flwed freely and were assciated with ne anther, ften indicated by phrases such as “this reminds me f” r “speaking f which”.
“While many participants had a tendency t jump between seemingly unrelated thughts, creative individuals shwed signs f thinking mre assciatively,” Raffaeli said, wh was a senir authr f the paper.
The first experiment als fund that creative peple were mre engaged in their thughts when they were left alne withut distractins (干扰), such as the cellphne and Internet. “Creative peple rated themselves as being less bred, even ver thse 10 minutes. They als spke mre wrds verall, which indicated that their thughts were mre likely t mve freely,” Raffaeli said.
T further prve their initial findings, the researchers extended their study in the cntext f a much larger span f time—frm 2020 t 2023 when many peple were alne with their thughts mre ften. Fr the secnd experiment, ver 2,600 adults answered questins thrugh a smartphne app called Mind Windw. Participants wh self-identified as being creative reprted being less bred and mre engaged in their thughts during that perid.
The researchers are cntinuing this line f wrk using their Mind Windw app. They encurage peple t dwnlad and use the app t help scientists understand hw peple acrss the wrld think in their everyday lives. “Understanding why different peple think the way they d may lead t prmising interventins t imprve health and well-being,” Raffaeli said.
