    Befre the develpment f phnes, the natives f the island f La Gmera were able t use a whistled language t cmmunicate with each ther frm muntain peak t muntain peak. It is knwn as the Silb Gmer.
    Invented by the island’s natives–Guanches, the Silb Gmer was the nly frm that they used t cmmunicate with thers far away until the first half f the 20th century. During the 16th century, it was taught t Spanish settlers. Then it spread t ther neighburing islands and was used by much mre peple.
    The whistled language has a vcabulary f ver 4,000 wrds. The difficulty f this language lies in the fact that it replaces the five vwels f Spanish language with tw clearly different whistles and twenty-tw cnsnants f it with ther fur different whistles.
