Seals and sea lins are bth in the rder Carnivra and subrder Pinnipedia, thus they are called “pinnipeds.” Pinnipeds are mammals that are well-adapted fr swimming. They usually have a streamlined barrel shape (桶形) and fur flippers at the end f each limb (四肢). They als give birth t live yung and nurse their yung. Pinnipeds are prtected by a thick layer f fat under their skin and fur t keep them warm in water. There are three families f pinnipeds: the Phcidae, the earless r true seals; the Otariidae, the eared seals, and the Odbenidae, the walruses.
Characteristics f Phcidae (Earless r True Seals)
Earless seals have n visible ear flaps, althugh they still have ears, which may be visible as a dark spt r small hle n the side f their head.
    “True” seals:
 Have n external ear flaps.

 May gather in larger grups than true seals. Sea lins are much mre vcal than true seals, and make a variety f lud, barking nises.
    Characteristics f Walruses
Wndering abut walruses, and hw they differ frm seals and sea lins? Walruses are pinnipeds, but they are in the family, Odbenidae. One bvius difference between walruses, seals and sea lins is that walruses are the nly pinnipeds with tusks—a pair f lng pinted teeth. These tusks are present in bth males and females.
Other than tusks, walruses have sme similarities t bth seals and sea lins. Like true seals, walruses dn’t have visible ear flaps. But, like eared seals, walruses can walk n their flippers by rtating their hind flippers under their bdy.

Back in 1958, I was crazy abut the Nrflk and Western 746. The smth bullet-nse engine with its range and yellw lines and shiny streamlined black tender (车厢) seemed t have cast a spell n me.
Tgether the engine and tender measured a little shy f 2 feet—enrmus by the ty train standards f the day. Even better, the 746 had a wrking headlight and smker, and its tender sang high.
Unfrtunately, the amazing 746 als had an amazing price—$50, equal t abut $450 tday. That was far mre than my grandfather culd affrd. Instead, I had t be cntent with his little Linel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shrter than the 746 and had n headlight, n smker r n sund! But that was the best that my grandfather culd give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Cmplicated sund systems and cmputer cntrls dminated ty trains. I never gave a lk. My interest in ty trains, I firmly believed, had faded, nr did my admiratin fr the 746, since my grandfather was nt with me. The 746 was never called t mind. On an rdinary day, hwever, I happened t see the 746 utside the windw f a train shw. Just ne lk, I culd nt lk away. Childhd memries that I tried t hide in the depths f my heart raced thrugh my mind, happy r sad.
That day I tk the 746 hme and placed it in the centre f the rm, and let my childhd dream sing its way arund me. Smke rse ut frm the engine and the sft sng sunded frm its tender. It seemed as if I culd see the sft light in grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.

Alarming levels f dangerus chemicals knwn as Perflurinated Alkylated Substances (PFAS) were discvered in fd packaging at a number f well-knwn fast-fd restaurants and grcery stre chains, a new reprt fund. The reprt cmes mre than tw years int the Cvid-19 pandemic, when the public has relied heavily n takeut and grcery deliveries.
Often called “frever chemicals” because they d nt break dwn in the envirnment, PFAS are used in fd packaging t prevent grease (油脂) and water frm saking thrugh fd wrappers and cups. PFAS can als be fund in the ink used t print lgs and instructins n fd cntainers.
The US Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin calls expsure t PFAS a “public health cncern”, citing that the human-made chemicals can harm the immune system and reduce a persn’s resistance t infectius diseases.
Regulatry limits fr hw much PFAS fd packaging shuld cntain can vary greatly. Fr instance, a new law in Califrnia set the limit at less than 100 ppm. “Cmpared t America, Denmark sets a much lwer regulatry limit f 20 ppm with great success,” said Xenia Trier, an expert at the Eurpean Envirnment Agency. “It des wrk t set limits and enfrce them. PFAS d migrate frm the paper int the fd. Even thugh it was nt 100%, we still saw cnsiderable transmissin. In general, transmissin frm packaging t fd is increased as the temperature f the fd rises. It is the same with the time spent in wrapping materials.” Trier tld NBS, ne f the majr American mass-media cmpanies.
In respnse t the issue, Whle Fds became the first grcery chain t publicly cmmit t remve PFAS frm takeut cntainers and bakery paper. Many ther cmpanies fllwed suit. Experts say peple wh want t avid PFAS in their takeut and fd delivery packaging shuld favr cmpanies that have prmised t remve the chemicals. “As sn as yu receive yur takeut, yu’d better take fd ut f the cntainer immediately, and never reheat fd in its riginal cntainer. Instead, remve yur fd and heat it in ceramic (陶瓷的) r glass cntainers.” Trier said.
8.What can we learn abut PFAS in fd packaging?
A.They have been used fr tw years.
    B.They d little harm t cnsumers’ health.
C.They are used t break dwn the chemicals.
D.They can make wrappers resistant t grease and water.

    A.Favrable.B.Neutral.
    C.Ambiguus.D.Oppsed.
10.What des the underlined wrd “it” refer t in paragraph 4?
A.Cnsiderable migratin f grease and water.
B.PFAS transmissin frm packaging t fd.
C.Wrapper expsure t high fd temperature.
    D.Regulatry limits cncerning fd packaging.
11.What is the main idea f the text?
    A.Fd packaging cntains dangerus chemicals.
    B.Cnsumers are recmmended t have PFAS-free prducts.
C.PFAS fund in fd packaging has becme a great cncern.
D.The gvernment has taken measures t reduce PFAS expsure.

Gentle sund stimulatin, als knwn as pink nise, may significantly enhance deep sleep in lder adults and imprve their ability t recall wrds, a new study has fund.
Deep sleep is critical fr memry cnslidatin. Hwever, beginning in middle age, deep sleep decreases substantially, which scientists believe cntributes t memry lss in aging. The sund stimulatin significantly enhanced deep sleep in participants and their scres n a memry test. “This is an innvative, simple and safe nn-medicatin apprach that may help imprve brain health,” said Phyllis Zee, prfessr at Nrthwestern University in the US. “This is a ptential tl fr enhancing memry in lder ppulatins and attenuating nrmal age-related memry decline,” said Zee.
Zee and a team f researchers gathered 13 adults, 60 and lder, and mnitred their sleep in a lab fr tw nights. On bth nights, the participants tk a memry test, went t bed while wearing headphnes and a special cap, and tk anther memry test in the mrning. But withut the participants’ awareness, researchers nly played pink nise int the headphnes n ne night. Mre specifically, they timed the sunds t match the participants’ slw-wave scillatins. During deep sleep, brain waves slw t abut ne scillatin per secnd, cmpared t abut ten scillatins per secnd during wakefulness. The system they emplyed in the study allwed the team t deliver a lw burst f pink nise at the “precise mment” when the participants’ slw waves rse — a pattern that is unique t each persn.
The study fund that participants’ slw waves increased after the night f sund stimulatin, suggesting that they were getting mre deep sleep. And n the mrning after hearing pink nise, they perfrmed three times better n memry tests than they did after sleeping withut any sund stimulatin.
Previus research shwed pink nise during deep sleep culd imprve memry cnslidatin in yung peple. But it has nt been tested in lder adults. The new study targeted lder individuals and used a nvel sund system that increased the effectiveness f the sund stimulatin in lder ppulatins.
The study was a relatively small ne, s further research is needed t cnfirm its findings and t study hw lnger-term use f pink nise affects sleep. But Nrthwestern has taken steps t patent the researchers’ technlgy, which seems t have hit upn a way t stimulate slw waves at the right mment. The team hpes t develp an affrdable device that peple can use at hme, frm the cmfrt f their beds.
12.The new study mainly reveals that _____.
A.deep sleep cnslidates ld adults’ memry
B.pink nise bsts memry amng the elderly
C.sleep disrders play a key rle in memry lss
D.sund stimulatin increases the length f sleep
13.The wrd “attenuating” in the secnd paragraph mst prbably means _____.
    A.wrseningB.reversingC.slwing dwnD.bringing abut
14.What can be learned abut the new study?
A.It emplyed a sund system prgrammed in step with brain waves.
B.It cmpared the effects n lder adults and n yunger ppulatins.
C.It repeated the experiment several times withut the participants’ ntice.
D.It adjusted the participants’ slw-wave scillatins t match the stimulatins.
15.It can be inferred that the apprach used in the study _____.
A.may put ld adults in risk in the lng run
B.has the ptential t be applied in practice
C.requires an innvative and affrdable device
    D.needs Nrthwestern’s patent fr cnfirmatin

Think back t yur last presentatin. 16 And were they engaged in what yu were saying? While yu may think yurself t be a great speaker, it is nt particularly hard t anny yur audience. Here are the tp three f annying habits in a presentatin: reading the presentatin (37%), having n knwledge f the subject matter (22%), using many “umms” and “uhhs” (16%).
S here are sme tips t help yu avid these annying mistakes.
The mst annying presentatin habit is als ne f the easiest t fall victim t. With a visual aid, yu tend t lk back and read what yu have already written. 17 By reading yur slides, yu shw n additinal infrmatin, and therefre give yur audience n reasn t keep listening nce they have finished reading the slide themselves.
One guideline I find especially effective is t ensure each slide has n mre than six main pints, and n mre than six wrds per pint. 18 When in practice, having slides with flexible layuts and prper pictures is equally imprtant.
19 The mre prepared yu are, the better yu can effectively avid sunding like yu’ve never even heard f yur tpic befre. S in rder t shw yur audience yu knw yur stuff, getting ready will make all the difference.
The third mst annying habit was using many “umms” and “uhhs”, a symptm f nt cmmunicating effectively. This culd be a result f stage fright, but mre ften than nt these interjectins (感叹词) happen uncnsciusly. 20
One tip fr aviding this is t practice yur presentatin multiple times befrehand, ut lud. The mre yu practice, the mre likely yu can catch yurself befre letting the “umms” and “uhhs” slip ut.
    A.Was it bring?
    B.Were peple interested?
C.It helps yu t save yur time.
D.This stps yu verlading yur slides with infrmatin.
E.Despite hw inncent they seem, they can ruin yur credibility.
F.Aviding anther annying habit cmes dwn t ne factr: preparatin.
G.Hwever, all this shws is that yu can d what yur audience can as well.

    ①纠正:crrect/rectify
    ②建议:suggest/recmmend
    情绪类
    ①疑惑:Overwhelmed with cnfusin/filled with cnfusin
    ②尴尬地:awkwardly/embarrassedly

[高分句型2]We send a cup f lemnade t custmers wh bught it last Saturday afternn fr free.(由关系代词wh引导限制性定语从句)
