A new reprt frm University f East Anglia(UEA)shws that expsure t green space reduces the risk f type II diabetes, cardivascular disease, stress, and high bld pressure. Ppulatins with higher levels f green space expsure are als mre likely t reprt gd verall health.
Lead authr Caimhe Twhig-Bennett, frm UEA’S Nrwich Medical Schl, said, “Spending time in nature certainly makes us feel healthier, but until nw the impact n ur lng-term wellbeing hasn’t been fully understd. We gathered evidence frm ver 140 studies invlving mre than 290 millin peple t see whether nature really des prvide a health bst.”
The research team studied data frm 20 cuntries including the UK, the US, Spain, France, Germany, Australia and Japan—where “frest bathing” is already a ppular practice. “Green space” was defined as pen, undevelped land with natural vegetatin including urban green space, which included parks and street greenery. The team analyzed hw the health f peple with little access t green space cmpared t that f peple with the highest amunts f expsure.
“We fund that spending time in r living clse t natural green space is assciated with diverse and significant health benefits. It reduces the risk f type TT diabetes, cardivascular disease, premature death, and preterm birth, and increases sleep duratin. Peple living clser t nature als had reduced diastlic bld pressure, heart rate and stress. “Frest bathing is really ppular as a therapy in Japan, with participants spending time in the frest either sitting r lying dwn, r just walking arund. Our study shws that perhaps they have the right idea! Althugh we have lked at a large bdy f research n the relatinship between green space and health, we dn’t knw exactly what it is that causes this relatinship. Peple living near green space likely have mre pprtunities fr physical activity and scializing.
