While we may think it feels gd t cmplain, cmplaining has sme bad effects assciated with it.
Why isn't cmplaining beneficial? Research shws that it cnnects ur brain with negativity. The brain is designed t wrk efficiently. This means that when we repeat a thught, negative r psitive, the nerve cells frm a bridge between each ther t pass infrmatin at a higher speed. Therefre, the next time we have a similar type f thught, it is mre easily passed. This explains why certain thught patterns becme habits.
Yet the harmful effects dn't stp there. A study shws that cmplaining causes the hippcampus(海马区),which plays a vital rle in prblem-slving, t becme smaller.
In additin t causing brain damage, cmplaining als releases a stress hrmne crtisl, a kind f chemical the bdy prduces when we meet with sme dangers. Cnstantly having a high level f crtisl results in high bld pressure, high bld sugar, and lwer immunity(免疫力).
The ill effects f ur cmplaining aren't just limited t urselves, they als invlve thse arund us. We tend t mirrr the mds f ur friends. Fr this reasn, we shuld be cautius abut having stubbrn(固执的)cmplainers in ur circle f friends.

Gratitude is the perfect cure fr cmplaining, a behavir that steals ur brain pwer, happiness and physical well-being.
What have yu bserved abut the effects f cmplaining in yur wn life r in the lives f thers? Have yu nticed that when yu are grateful, yu feel better all ver? Please share yur thughts in the cmments sectin belw.

S at least we were safe. But this was nt what we had cme alng fr. A lk at the ther divers' faces suggested that nw they were als dubtful that we'd ever get the chance t see a whale shark-these weather cnditins were ttally unsuitable fr diving! Nne f us spke. It seemed t much f an effrt. Then suddenly the batman stpped the engine. He said a few wrds in. his wn language t the diving instructr, wh immediately jumped up frm his seat and tld us t get ready t dive.
When I jumped int the grey sea, I was sure I wuldn't see anything. But then... there it was! An enrmus whale shark, slwly swimming thrugh the water. I culdn’t believe my eyes-my first whale shark! I hardly dared breathe-I was afraid my streams f bubbles(气泡)might scare the huge creature away. And the ther divers were equally awed. Slwly we apprached this huge animal. It was swimming quite slwly and we were able t swim with it, lking at the beautiful markings n its back. I was still hlding my breath, telling myself that this huge fish was harmless! D篇
Disrders f the brain are a grwing wrry. Twelve mental- health cnditins affect abut 970 millin peple arund the wrld accrding t the Glbal Burden f Disease Prject: mre than ne in ten f the ppulatin. This figure culd well be an underestimate. Neurlgical(神经学的) prblems such as strke, migraine(偏头痛),Parkinsn’s and brain injury are cllectively the leading glbal surce f disability. Ageing ppulatins with unhealthy ways f life are likely t make this prblem much wrse everywhere.
In an ideal wrld, science wuld be cming t the rescue. But the brain is a cmplex rgan smetimes described as the mst cmplex structure in the knwn universe. A private cmpany spent an estimated $ 43 billin n research int therapies fr Alzheimer's disease between 1998 and 2017 and came up empty-handed. That big failure is perhaps the biggest reasn why, in the 2010s, many drug firms abandned r cut back n neurscience research
Happily, there are signs f a change. In ur Technlgy Quarterly this week we reprt n a renaissance in neurscience, with many drug cmpanies, sme f them big nes, shwing renewed interest in the field. This fresh energy is cming frm a variety f techniques and ideas. Mre precise diagnsis and well-cnfirmed bimarkers which reveal the curse f disease, are imprving clinical trials. New kinds f treatment such as gene therapy, are expanding the range f diseases that can be tackled. Other advances are an increasing amunt f data, which is prving critical t understanding the bilgical rts f neurlgical prblems.
As hpes rise fr tackling this final frntier f bi-medicine, it is wrth remembering that the secrets t a healthy brain are nt nly ging t cme frm a pill r psychtherapist's treatments. The health f the brain is influenced by what ges n utside it such as nutritin, exercise, the abuse f alchl, educatin, scial cnnectins and pllutin. Nne f this shuld be surprising: The health f the brain is tied t the health and the well-being f the bdy that it sits in. Effrts t ensure better brain health are an investment that will keep bringing advantages t individuals, and t scieties, fr decades t cme.
( )l2. What des the authr suggest in bth the first and last paragraphs t prevent brain diseases?
A. Less wrry.
B. Mre financial aid.
C. Magic medicine.
D. Healthy lifestyles.
( )l3. What cntribute t the renewed interest in neurscience research?
A. Prfits and fame.
B. Advances in technlgy.
C. Larger range f diseases.
D. Mre clinical trials.
( )14. What is mst likely t be the authr's jb?
A. A jurnal editr.
B. A librarian.
C. A medical student.
D. A clinical dctr.
( )l5. What des the text mainly talk abut?
A. Cmplex brain health.
B. A brand-new research tpic.
C. Renewed neurscience research.
D. Defeating brain disrders.

The British are knwn fr their sense f humr. Hwever, it is ften difficult fr freigners t make sense f their jkes. The main thing t remember is that the British like t make fun f themselves as well as thers. 16 Anther key t understanding British humr is t knw that the British ften use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than yu think r feel. Fr example, if smene is very implite and shuts at anther persn, smene else might say, “He/She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is ften used in unpleasant situatins r t make anther persn lk silly. 17 The British like t make fun f many ther things. They ften laugh abut the silly and terrible things that happen t us every day, like when smene accidentally falls ver in the street. They als like t make jkes abut peple frm different classes f sciety. 18 Finally, the British lve t watch cmedies abut peple wh d nt knw hw t behave in sciety. The cmedy TV series Mr. Bean is a gd example f this kind f humr.
19 In pictures, he almst never talks, and instead he uses his bdy mvements and facial expressins t make peple laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean s funny is that he des things that adults in the real wrld cannt d. Fr instance, nce Mr. Bean bught a large chair. He needed t take it hme, but it was t big t fit in his small car. His slutin was t put the chair n tp f his car. 20 Mr. Bean is ppular in many cuntries arund the wrld because yu d nt have t speak English t understand the humr. Because f this, many peple can better understand the British sense f humr.
