Mom and I were about to finish cooking dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish drawer, she went to the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
Mom worked for the local Council on Aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the little things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients (客户) got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil (铝箔纸), and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn’t get enough to eat.
It was about ten years before microwave ovens became common, so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom’s clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job, and Mom continued after Dad’s death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning out Mom’s house after her death, I kept one as a souvenir (纪念品). Whenever I look at it, I will always remember the lessons of unselfishness and caring for one’s neighbors that were modeled for me by my parents.

A. Kind and considerate. B. Thoughtful and creative.
C. Responsible and proud. D. Traditional and hardworking.
17. What can be inferred about the writer in the future?

根据第二段中“Most of her clients (客户) got Meals on Wheels, a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil (铝箔纸), and then deliver them to the people who she knew didn’t get enough to eat.(在上世纪70年代,她的大多数客户都使用了的“送餐上门”服务。

Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad, Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans, pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake.(大约十年后微波炉才开始普及,所以重要的是食物要放在可以在普通烤箱中再次加热的盘子里。 故选A项。

During an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction (干扰) in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the coworking space across the street — so I can focus.” His comment struck me as strange. After all, coworking spaces also typically use an open office layout (布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his method works.
The research examined various levels of noise on participants (参与者) as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups with various levels of noise in the background from total silence to 50 decibels (分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels.
The differences between most of the groups were so small that they could be ignored; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group — where there was a level of noise similar to background chatting in a coffee shop — performed better than the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise.
The study also suggests that the right level of background noise — not too loud and not total silence — may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to work without making it impossible to focus. This kind of “distracted focus” appears to be the best for working on creative tasks.
So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face communications and conversations influence the creative process, and yet a coworking space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions.
18. Why does the writer mention his interview at the start of the passage?
A. To advertise for one of his new books.
B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To show his confusion about the interview’s actions.
D. To express the interviewer’s annoyance over his open office.
19. What does Paragraph 2 tell us about the research?
A. Theory of the research. B. Place of the research.
C. Results of the research. D. Method of the research.
20. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability?
A. 85 decibels. B. 70 decibels.
C. 50 decibels. D. Total silence.
21. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people?
A. Constant interruptions. B. Limited working space.
C. Personal privacy unprotected. D. Inconvenience of group discussion.
B 19. D 20. B 21. A

根据第二段“The research examined various levels of noise on participants (参与者) as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups with various levels of noise in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels (分贝), 70 decibels, and 85 decibels.(研究人员在参与者完成创造性思维测试时,对他们进行了不同程度的噪音测试。
根据第三段“however, the participants in the 70 decibels group — where there was a level of noise similar to background chatting in a coffee shop — performed better than the other groups.(然而,70分贝组的参与者表现得比其他组更好,他们的噪音水平类似于咖啡店里的聊天背景声)”和第四段“The study also suggests that the right level of background noise — not too loud and not total silence — may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability.
根据第五段中“So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can’t stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus.(那么,为什么这么多人讨厌开放式办公室呢? 故选A项。

“A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots (靴子) on.” said Mark Twain. In today’s Internet world of “fake (假的) news,” lies spread even faster and the truth is having trouble finding its boots.
To make matters worse, most young people get news from social media sites where facts are mixed with rumors (谣言), half-truths and complete lies. This has led to young people becoming confused. In the latest PISA, which tested 15-year-olds worldwide on academic subjects, fewer than one in ten of the examinees were reported to be able to recognize fact from opinion. A Stanford University study showed that students at all levels of education could not tell teal news from fake news. In one instance, 80 percent thought that a paid advertisement was a real news story.
Fake news is spread by people who have a prejudice (偏见). They want to influence public opinion either for or against something or someone. It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information.
Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more credible sources of information. Reporters are professional trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct. However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be objective? Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice? Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.
22. What does the writer say about young people with news around?
A. They make fake news and spread it. B. They are easily fooled by fake news.
C. They get worried about their education. D. They can recognize facts from opinions.
23. What does the underlined word “credible” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Primary. B. Realistic.
C. Believable. D. Important.
24. According to the writer, what can help us avoid being fooled by fake news?
A. Only look for news through media.
B. Become a professional and trained reporter.
C. Compare the news from different sources.
D. focus on the new instead of the writer.
25. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. What Should a Reporter Do?
B. Who Makes and Spreads Fake New?
C. How Can We Become a Newspaper Editor?
D. How Can We Stay Objective in Reading News?
B 23. C 24. C 25. D
根据文章第二段“This has led to young people becoming confused.
根据最后一段本句“Traditional media, such as newspapers and television, are still the more credible sources of information. (传统媒体,如报纸和电视,仍然是更credible信息来源)”和后句“Reporters are professional trained to look for facts, and editors have the job of making sure those facts are correct.
根据文章最后一段“Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies.(其次,从主流媒体寻找其他来源,确保信息。
根据文章第三段“It is important, then, for young people to recognize when they are being used and to be doubtful about online information. (因此,对年轻人来说,重要的是要意识到他们什么时候被利用了,并对网络信息持怀疑态度)”可知,年轻人很容易被假新闻愚弄;根据文章最后一段“However, if you are getting most of your information online, you have to be your own editor. In that case, the first thing to do is to look at the writer of a post. Is this person known to be objective? Does the site where you read the post have a prejudice? Next, look for other sources from mainstream media to make sure the information. In other words, by putting on your truth boots you won’t be fooled into chasing lies. How Can We Stay Objective in Reading News?(我们如何在阅读新闻时保持客观)符合本文主旨。故选D。

Actually, many senior 1 students have the same anxiety and problem as you. But if we can deal with them rationally, there is nothing to worry about. When it comes to choosing between Arts and Science, the basic rule is to base our choice on our own interests and strengths. Never follow others blindly. Besides, it may be helpful to seek opinions from senior 2 or senior 3 students. They have previous experience and lesson. Finally, whichever we choose, please keep it in mind that only by working hard can we live up to our expectation and choice.
I hope my ideas can be of great help. Best wishes!
