While I was riding a bike, I noticed a man about a mile in front of me. He was traveling at a lower speed, so I decided to 16 him. I had about two miles to go on the road before turning off. I started 17 faster and faster, and every block, I gradually closed the distance. After a few minutes, I was half a mile behind him. Finally, I 18 with him and passed him. I felt like a 19 , while he had no idea that we were even in a race.
After I passed him, I realized that I had been so focused on competing against him that I had 20 my tum. I had gone nearly six blocks past it and had to tum around. Isn't that what happened in life? We spend most of our time 21 with neighbors, friends and family, trying to defeat them or trying to outdo them-while there was never a competition in the first place. We use most of our time and energy to compete with others instead of 22 our destination, and we miss out on our own paths to our destinies 23 . Unhealthy competition is a continuous process, a never-ending cycle, a race of life. No matter what you do, someone will always be 24 you: someone with a better job, a nicer car, more free time and more money.
Stop doing that! Feel grateful for what life has offered to you. Stay focused on your 25 and live a healthy life. There's no competition in your destiny. Run your own race of life and wish others well!

From a young age, I was very interested in language. I remember a holiday in Spain when I was 7. Two boys asked if I spoke Norwegian. When I couldn't make a reply, they ran off, leaving me upset. Back home, I searched shops for old language books and enjoyed trying all these different words to express what was in my head. I thought it was amazing, and still do.
At university, I did a combined languages degree, studying French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. From then on, it became a way of life. After graduation, I worked as an au pair (互惠生) in Germany, and finally studied German. I cycled to the Netherlands, picking up Dutch. It turned out that speaking a language abroad with local people was an ideal way to learn, especially in a time before the Internet.
Traveling to learn alanguage became an adventure (探险) — it came with huge excitement and of course lonelier, more complex moments. I have found that the speed of learning depends on the language and how much attention I pay to it. If it is similar to a language I already speak, I find I can use it within weeks, although perhaps not so well.
Languages have had a big influence on my personal life, too. In 2003, during a train ride in the Balkans, I met my future wife — he is Macedonian (马其顿人) , with a south-east Slavic languages and literature degree.
I've studied more than 50 languages now. I generally use 15 weekly and more than 30 in a year. I also support native and endangered languages. Having a world of languages out there and not learning them is like watching TV in black and white and not knowing there is color. They will continue to enrich me for a lifetime.
The most important thing about learning languages is the ability to build bridges with other people. They allow you to experience life differently.
28. In which order was the article written?
A. Space order B. Time order
C. From specific to general D. From general to specific
29. What is the correct order of the following sentences?
①I studied four languages at the same time.
②I support native and endangered languages.
②I met my future wife during a train ride in the Balkans.
②I traveled, worked and studied languages in different countries.
②I found it amazing to express my feelings and thoughts in a new language.
A. ⑤①③④② B. ②④①③② C. ②①④②③ D. ⑤①④③②
30. What is the best title for this article?
A. Learning a language B. A language lover's life
C. Talking with the world D. Traveling to learn a language

It is easy to get carried away in an argument. Having a rational (理性的) conversation with someone who has a different opinion might seem like a challenge. One way is to treat the other person with empathy (同理心) .
The Empathy Challenge is an exercise created by Zoe Chance, senior lecturer at the Yale School of Management. At Yale, Chance teaches a course caled “Mastering Influence and Persuasion” where students learn to communicate more effectively. In her blog, Chance explains that it's important to listen to people who disagree with you. “As they explain their position, you listen for their underlying (潜在的) values. Finally, you look for common ground as you reflect those values back. That's it”
Chance first took this challenge herself before asking her students to try. As she couldn't understand why many people chose to vote for Donald Trump, she found three Trump's voters and spoke with them. Through asking questions, Chance was able to empathize with them and realize they had similar feelings. One man, an Orthodox Jew, explained that he supported Trump because Trump's daughter and son-in-law are Jewish. The next man was a Russian immigrant crazy about freedom. The third was a lawyer who believed that authenticity (真实性) was important in political leaders.
Although Chance and those people had different political beliefs, they were able to relate to the life values of others. And that's the point of the exercise - to understand others as fellow human beings.
31. Which of the following does the Empathy Challenge practise?
A. Listening skills. B. Mastering skills.
C. Communication skills. D. Problem solving skills.
32. According to Chance, what should people do when dealing with a disagreement?
A. Reflect their own values. B. Explain others' position.
C. Share their similar feelings. D. Find common ground between two sides.
33. Why did the three men vote for Donald Trump?
A. Because of their life values. B. Because of Trump's belief.
C. Because of their family background. D. Because of Trump's authenticity.

Chinese scientists found Changesite- (Y) -thesixth new lunar mineral in moon samples (样品) brought back by the Chang'e 5 lunar probe (探测器) in December 2020. It has become the first lunar mineral found by Chinese scientists, making China the third nation in the world, after the United States and Russia, to have achieved such a success, reported China Daily.
Changesite- (Y) looks crystal clear like a diamond (钻石) . But its chemical content (化学组成) is different from any other known mineral. It has a high level of rare earth, reported China Science Daily. Li Ziying, chief scientist of the lunar sample research, said that the finding of this new mineral will help researchers study the history and physical traits (特征) of the moon. The value of the rare earth in it will also be studied.
Besides the new mineral, scientists also measured the content of helium-3 (氦-3) from the Chang'e 5 samples. Helium-3 is a valuable fuel (燃料) that can provide safer nuclear energy (核能) . It is not radioactive (放射性的) and would not produce dangerous waste. On Earth, we have only 15 to 20 tons of helium-3 that can be used. But after studying the moon's soil, scientists said there could be at least 1 million tons of helium-3 on the moon. That's enough for all people on Earth to have clean energy for 10, 000 years!
34. How many kinds of lunar minerals have scientists found so far?
A. One. B. Three. C. Six. D. Seven.
35. According to the article, what still waits to be studied by scientists about the moon?
A. Its shape. B. Its history. C. Its looks. D. Its size.
36. What does the discovery of Helium-3 from the Chang'e 5 samples tell us?
A. Helium-3 will not produce any waste.
B. Helium-3 on the moon may be radioactive.
C. The moon can provide us with enough clean energy.
D. There is enough nuclear energy on the moon for humans.

“Have you done the MBTI personality test?” “Yes, I'm an INTJ,” replied Gu Ailing in a recent interview. Gu's response became a hot topic online and drew people's attention to the test.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a test designed to discover a person's personality type. The test result is based on four sets of opposing qualities: Extroversion (外向) VS Introversion, Sensing VS Intuition (直觉) , Thinking VS Feeling, and Judging VS Perceiving (感知) . After answering more than 90 questions, test-takers get their four-letter personality result, including a detailed description. Gu Ailing's result of INTJ is one of the 16 possible personality types that the test shows.
Developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers in the US in the 1940s, the test grew to become the standard for personality tests. Many companies and organizations use it to help them choose people for certain positions. And now in China, Internet users are using it as a tool to guide their lives and relationships.
The key problem with the MBTI is that the test is too “black and white”, according to The Guardian. The results place people into only one of each of the four categories; for example, someone is either an introvert or an extrovert. But many people would surely sit somewhere in the middle of these two. In short, the MBTI only gives a “simplified view of human personality”, claimed The Guardian article. It can only really describe the surface of who people are. And don't forget that people's behavior and characteristics also change over time. Tests and tools that help people better understand who they are and how they think are very powerful and can still help in some parts of life. As science and technology develop, people can look forward to more accurate tests that truly embrace how wonderfully complex and ever-changing humans really are.
37. What does the article tell us about the MBTI?
A. It was developed about 90 years ago.
B. It has been supported by psychology experts.
C. It groups people into 16 different personality types.
D. It was created to help companies choose people for certain positions.
38. How can people discover their personality types?
A. By giving a detailed description.
B. By answering more than 90 questions.
C. By changing the standard for personality tests.
D. By reading the 16 possible personality types directly.
39. The underlined word “simplified” in the passage probably means ________.
A. in general B. in detail C. trustworthy D. too simple
40. What is the purpose of writing this article?
A. To find out how to practice MBTI.
B. To explain why MBTI is becoming popular
C. To generally describe the MBTI personality test.
D. To help readers understand themselves through MBTI.

Rivers are the lifeblood of human civilizations. As one of the longest-lasting civilizations, China has a large number of rivers. A total of 45, 203 rivers with a drainage area (流域面积) of more than 50 square kilometers run across the country, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The most famous ones are the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. As the longest river in Asia and third longest in the world, the Yangtze River has a length of 6, 300 kilometers. It originates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原) and flows through 11 provincial-level administrative regions (省级行政区) before ending in the East China Sea. Second to the Yangtze River is the Yellow River, with a length of 5, 464 kilometers as it flows from the west to the east of China.
Apart from its big number of natural rivers, China also has a lot of beautiful man-made rivers. The Grand Canal is one example. With a history of more than 2, 500 years, the Grand Canal stretches (延伸) nearly 3, 200 kilometers and connects the north and south of China.
Despite their different features, these rivers and canals continue to nourish (滋养) the Chinese people physically and culturally. They bring fertile (肥沃的) soil and enough irrigation (灌溉) water, which makes many areas “a land of fish and rice”. Connecting China as a whole, the water network runs through geographical boundaries (界限) and provides people with convenient transportation, expanding trade and promoting economic growth. These rivers are immortalized (使名垂千古) in Chinese culture, as can be found in Chinese poetry, art, literature, and folklore.
Just as Chinese President Xi Jinping said, “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets (绿水青山就是金山银山) .”
To protect these bodies of water, many measures have been taken in recent years. For example, in August, the Ministry of Water Resources announced plans to bring back 700, 000 hectares (公顷) of degraded natural forest and treat almost 1. 4 million hectares of land suffering from desertification (沙漠化) by 2025.
Through these government measures, our rivers have seen many positive changes - birds flying above the wetlands and farmers happily harvesting on irrigated lands.

Liu Xiaosheng finally had time to himself when the summer vacation recently ended. The 73-year-old had been teaching children English for f 66 six days a week for over a month.
His “classroom” was a rural family courtyard in a village administered by the city of Zunyi, Guizhou province. On the outer wall of the house, there was a small b 67 covered with phonetic symbols. Benches were arranged in a U shape to serve as desks, and a dozen children were packed in for classes.
Before he retired, Liu was a f 68 language professor at a university in Chongqing municipality. In 2012, he brought his family to Guizhou to spend the summer.
One evening, he saw a neighbor's child learning English. And he heard many mistakes when the child was reading. As ateacher, he knew how important standard p 69 was to learning the language and he began to correct the child.
In this way, Liu “recruited” his first student. News of free English tutoring from a retired university professor soon spread t 70 the village, and more and more children came to learn.
At first, Liu taught in his living room, and then moved into the corridor for more space. But soon, the corridor was packed with students. One villager volunteered to vacate his rice milling room to use as a classroom, and the villagers pooled their money to buy desks, chairs, benches, and a blackboard.
Later, as the n 71 of students grew, Liu set up a classroom in the courtyard of a villager's house, and as a result, he is now well k 72 as the “courtyard teacher”.
