It may save a life. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim’s condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain. First aid measures depend upon a victim’s needs and the provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal(脊柱) injury and paralysis(瘫痪). Despite the varieties of injuries, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim. First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether lifethreatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim’s condition is known by the acronym(首字母缩写词) ABC, which stands for: A—Airway: Is it open and clear?B—Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing. C—Circulation: Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding extremely? Check skin colour and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems. ( )1First aid may bring about all the following results EXCEPT________. Asaving a victim’s life Bpreventing a victim’s condition from getting worse Crelieving a victim from pain Dhelping a person avoid sudden illness or injury ( )2Before we give first aid to a victim, it is very important for us to ________. Amake sure what to do and what not to do Brefer to all kinds of handbooks on first aid Cremove the ring he/she may be wearing Dtake him/her to a hospital at once ( )3In giving first aid to a victim, you should first of all ________. Aremove him from the accident scene Bturn him over Ccall for professional medical help Dexamine him carefully ( )4The purpose of the passage is to tell the readers ________. Athe importance of protecting the accident scene Bsome basic facts about first aid Cwhat professional medical help is Dwho can offer first aid 【语篇导读】这篇文章主要介绍了急救的重要性以及急救的几个基本原则。 Shortness of breath has many different causes, and the treatment of it is specific for each cause. __1__ There are, however, some following first aid steps you can use to treat it, at least until the ambulance arrives or you’re able to get the victim to a hospital. __2__ The more energy you spend, the more oxygen you use and the more short of breath you feel. Think about a good workout at the gym. Exercise hard enough and you will feel short of breath. The cure? Take a break. Let the victim sit, stand or lie where’s the most comfortable. There’re lots of myths about how some body positions supposedly provide more airflow. Coaches regularly tell players to hold their arms above their heads to maximize chest expansion. Nursing staff assume the “tripod position” is the best position. __3__ Use oxygen. This is a special case used only for folks with chronic lung problems. If the victim has oxygen available, this is what it’s for. __4__ The victim may have been told by his or her doctor that too much oxygen for too long might cause more problems. Assure the victim that sudden increases in shortness of breath are the instances in which oxygen is needed most. Treat the cause of shortness of breath. __5__ Asthma(哮喘) patients, for example, often have multiple tools and drugs to fix sudden shortness of breath. Victims of lung infections may need to see a doctor and heart attack victims may need an ambulance. AHave the victim rest. BTake more exercise at the gym. CThe victim should use his or her oxygen as directed by a doctor. DThere’re many causes of shortness of breath and many of them are treatable. EThe victim can try to avoid making use of his or her oxygen whenever possible. FEvery person is different, however, so let the victim decide what position feels most comfortable. GIn many cases, the only way to treat shortness of breath is to call 911 or take the victim to a doctor.
