Grading Policies for Introduction to Literature
Grading Scale
90-100, A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C; 60-69, D; Below 60, E.
Essays (60%)
Your four major essays will combine to form the main part of the grade for this course: Essay 1=10%; Essay 2=15%; Essay 3=15%; Essay 4=20%.
Group Assignments (30%)
Students will work in groups to complete four assignments(作业) during the course. All the assignments will be submitted by the assigned date through Blackboard, our online learning and course management system.
Daily Work/In-Class Writings and Tests/Group Work/Homework (10%)
Class activities will vary from day to day, but students must be ready to complete short in-class writings or tests drawn directly from assigned readings or notes from the previous class' lecture/discussion, so it is important to take careful notes during class. Additionally, from time to time I will assign group work to be completed in class or short assignments to be completed at home, both of which will be graded.
Late Work
An essay not submitted in class on the due date will lose a letter grade for each class period it is late. If it is not turned in by the 4th day after the due date, it will earn a zero. Daily assignments not completed during class will get a zero. Short writings missed as a result of an excused absence will be accepted.

2. (2022年新高考) Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula(芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.
In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, "food waste goes against the moral grain," as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month's cover story. It's jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away—from "ugly" (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.
Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte wits, "if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world."
If that's hard to understand, let's keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time—but for him, it's more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., Which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished(有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.
Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don't think. "Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won't eat." Curtin says.
1. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?
A. We pay little attention to food waste.
B. We waste food unintentionally at times.
C. We waste more vegetables than meat.
D. We have good reasons for wasting food.
2. What is a consequence of food waste according to the text?
A. Moral decline. B. Environmental harm.
C. Energy shortage. D. Worldwide starvation.
3. What does Curtin's company do?
A. It produces kitchen equipment. B. It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.
C. It helps local farmers grow fruits. D. It makes meals out of unwanted food.
4. What does Curtin suggest people do?
A. Buy only what is needed. B. Reduce food consumption.
C. Go shopping once a week. D. Eat in restaurants less often.
3. (2022年新高考) The elderly residents(居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity(慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: "I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.
"I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they've gone to bed.
"It's good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I'm enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful."
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: "Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here."
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: "We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities."
1. What is the purpose of the project?
A. To ensure harmony in care homes. B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.
C. To raise money for medical research. D. To promote the elderly people's welfare.
2. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier?
A. She has learned new life skills. B. She has gained a sense of achievement.
C. She has recovered her memory. D. She has developed a strong personality.
3. What do the underlined words "embark on" mean in paragraph 7?
A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate.
4. What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs?
A. It is well received. B. It needs to be more creative.
C. It is highly profitable. D. It takes ages to see the results.
4. A man who lost all movement below the neck after a serious injury in 2007 was finally able to write again—with his mind.
Stanford University researchers used artificial intelligence software and a brain-computer interface(接口) to help the man to communicate with others by text, according to a study published Wednesday in Nature.
Dr. Jaimie Henderson, professor of neurosurgery at Stanford, implanted two microchips the size of baby aspirin(阿司匹林) about 1 millimeter into the man's brain in 2017. The chips can record movement in the motor cortex, the part of the brain that controls hand movement.
When the man imagined he was using his hand to write on a notebook, the computer transferred his thoughts into text on a computer screen. "This approach allowed a person with paralysis(瘫痪) to compose sentences at speeds nearly comparable to those of able-bodied adults of the same age typing on a smartphone," Henderson said. "The goal is to restore the ability to communicate by text."
The man who was referred to only as T5 in the study texted at a rate of about 18 words per minute. A person of the same age with full use of their hands can text at an average of 23 words per minute on a smartphone. His error rate was about one mistake every 18 or 19 attempted characters. When researchers used an autocorrect function, similar to most smartphones, error rates decreased below 1% when he was asked to copy text and slightly more than 2% when he was asked to write something original.
Study authors are excited not only about the breakthrough technology but about what their discovery means for future research. Researchers hope the technology could be adapted to allow people who can't talk to make conversation through writing. More work needs to be done before the study's results can be successfully transferred into real-world applications, such as a tablet, smartphone or computer.
1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

2.Which is necessary for the technology?
A.A phone. B.Medicine. C.A computer. D.A notebook.
3.What is the result of the technology?
A.It is successful. B.It is forbidden.
C.It has no advantage at all. D.It makes businessmen excited.
4.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.This technology is available in real world.
B.This technology can help people feel excited.
C.It will need long time to spread the technology.
D.People may no longer need the ability to talk in the future.
5. Lightning could be a much more important atmospheric cleanser than previously thought, according to a new analysis of historical measurements gathered from a storm-chasing airplane back in 2012 data which were originally thought to be inaccurate.
While some of the air-cleaning qualities of lightning are already well understood—in particular the creation of nitric oxide(氧化亚氮) and hydroxide(氢氧化物) that can wash out various greenhouse gases from the sky—there's a lot more going on here, according to the new research.
It appears that both lightning and the weaker, invisible electrical charges around them can produce the pollutant-catching oxidants hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO2), which can also remove some polluted gases such as methane and carbon monoxide from the atmosphere.
These 2012 readings were taken from a NASA plane flying over Colorado and Oklahoma, measuring the top part of storm clouds. The recent analysis, plus data gathered on the ground at the same time, showed that the lightning was indeed producing these high levels of oxidants(氧化剂).
A series of lab experiments backed up the idea that both visible lightning and invisible electrical charges in the air could produce extreme amounts of oxidants hydroxyl (OH) and hydroperoxyl (HO2). It's worth bearing in mind that most lightning storms never strike the ground, but are nevertheless setting off a lot of chemical reactions in the clouds.
At the moment, the hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl produced by lightning isn't included in atmospheric modeling—a neglect that could be significant.
"Through history, people were only interested in lightning storms because of what they could do on the ground," says Brune. "Now there is increasing interest in the weaker electrical discharges in thunderstorms that lead to clean the atmosphere."
There's a lot of uncertainty in the data, the researchers admit—mostly because their data is from a small part of the world over a limited time frame—but they guess that between 2-16 percent of global atmospheric oxidation could be caused by lightning storms.
1.Why can the lightning clean the air?
A.It usually goes with rain. B.It can produce more oxygen.
C.It can remove some greenhouse gases. D.It deals with the dirty dust and polluted air.
2.How did the researchers get the conclusion?
A.By using others' report. B.By comparing some data.
C.By doing research in the lab. D.By studying the previous data.
3.What is the disadvantage of the research?
A.It is not all-sided. B.It is not the latest.
C.It is done on the ground. D.It is only about atmosphere.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Atmosphere is Getting Polluted
B.Lightning is Dangerous for Human Beings
C.Scientists Find Chemical Reactions in the Clouds
D.Lightning Helps the Atmosphere Clean Itself

7. My name is Jacob Cramer. I am a freshman at Orange High School.
In 2013, I founded an organization called Love For The Elderly. Many elderly people have no one to care for them, no one to look after them, no one to love them. The elderly have paved the pathway of success for my generation. They deserve to be shown appreciation and kindness but are often ignored.
I am sure all of you have someone in your heart who has been at a nursing home. Think of them while I say this: they deserve the best and nothing but the best. The elderly are such an outstanding group, and their wisdom can most definitely be learned from. This idea of appreciating the elderly reverberated(回响) inside my head until finally, I decided it was time to step up and make a difference.
My passion for writing led me to create an organization, where people from all across the globe send letters filled with kindness and joy, from Iceland, Romania, Finland, Australia, and more. I then send these letters to senior centers, nursing homes, and retirement communities located all across the country. To this date, I have collected over 1000 letters, and the response I have received has been truly unbelievable.
This past month, I had the opportunity(机会) to receive $100 from KindSpring through their monthly kindness contest to help my organization. This money has been of great help. We do not receive much money, and so it helped to pay for many costs, including postage and envelopes. This gesture of kindness has been very beneficial to my organization, and I could not be more appreciative. Thank you so much to KindSpring for this amazing opportunity. If any of you would like to get involved in my organization, please visit lovefortheelderly.org.

8. The average temperature on Earth is now 1℃ hotter than it was in the late 1800s, and that temperature will keep rising toward the serious 1.5℃ standard over the next five years, according to a new report.
The authors of the new report predict that the average annual temperature on Earth will temporarily hit 1.5℃ of warming at some point in the next five years. "That possibility has doubled since last year. We're seeing increasing change in our climate," says Randall Cerveny, a climate scientist at Arizona State University.
Topping 1.5℃ of warming in a single year wouldn't break the Paris Agreement. But with every passing year of rising greenhouse gas emissions(排放), it becomes more likely that humans will cause catastrophic warming. The report calculates there's a 90% chance that one of the next five years will be the warmest year on record. "It is yet another wakeup call that the world needs to speed up commitments to slash greenhouse gas emissions," WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement.
If the U.S. follows through on new promises to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, it would help limit global warming to some extent, although other countries including China would also need to reduce their emissions in the next 10 years.
In April, the U.S. promised to cut the emissions in half by 2030 compared with 2005 levels. Most of those cuts would need to come from electricity generation and transportation. Meanwhile, the fossil fuel industry is seeing more pressure to invest(投资) in clean energy. On Wednesday, a Dutch court ordered Royal Dutch Shell to cut its carbon emissions more quickly, although the company says it expects to appeal the decision. And a small activist hedge fund(对冲基金会) successfully placed at least two new candidates on Exxon Mobil's board of directors, with the goal of pushing the company to take climate change more seriously.
1.What can we learn from Randall Cerveny?
A.Climate change becomes more serious. B.The prediction about climate is in doubt.
C.The experts think little of climate change. D.The average annual temperature doubled last year.
2.What does the underlined word "slash" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Reduce. B.Avoid. C.Measure. D.Forbid.
3.What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A.America fails to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
B.Other countries have helped limit global warming.
C.China determines to follow America's example.
D.America plays arole in global greenhouse gas emissions.
4.What happened to Royal Dutch Shell according to the last paragraph?
A.It was charged with air pollution.
B.It brought pressure to global warming.
C.It was asked to quicken the cut of carbon emissions.
D.It devoted to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
