For Matt and Dani Fontanesi, everything was going according to plan. The American newlyweds had just been married in February and were preparing for their honeymoon. They would leave their home in New Zealand to set off on a tour of the United States.
Matt developed a bit of a cold before leaving but didn’t think much of it. During the first 14-hour leg(旅程) of their flight, though, Matt’ s simple cold developed into a high fever. When they got to Idaho, he felt even worse. As three days passed and Matt stayed in bed, Dani took him to the hospital. When the doctor came back with the blood test results, his lighthearted attitude from earlier had noticeably changed. The patient’ s white blood cells were dangerously low. It was either AIDS or cancer.
Three days later, the news came: acute myeloid leukemia (急性骨髓性白血病). About 90 percent of Matt’s blood was cancerous, so he’d have to start chemotherapy (化疗) right away. There was a catch一treatment would mean Matt could never have kids. Even knowing their chances of starting a family were gone, they had no choice but to continue.
Chemotherapy clearly was not enough, so Matt needed a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植). His sister was the perfect match, and they flew to San Diego for the treatment. The bone marrow transplant destroyed what was left of Matt’s immune system and got rid of the cancer.
In the middle of Matt’ s fight against cancer, they received all $80,000 they needed within about a week, much of it from complete strangers.
The treatment went better than expected, and a year later, Matt was already back at work in San Diego. But he and his wife have never stopped thinking about the unexpected generosity that came their way. “How do we responsibly accept this?” says Matt. “We recognized we needed to pay this forward and to help fight against leukemia.” The two have been volunteering with the Leukemia &Lymphoma Society, supporting other families going through similar struggles.
“We have a new appreciation for life. Our lives are richer now because of it,” says Dani.
    24. What can we learn about Matt after he arrived at Idaho?
    A. He started his honeymoon happily. B. He prepared to go back home.
    C. He was terribly weak. D. He caught a cold.
    25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “catch” in Paragraph 3?
    A. Failure. B. Chance. C. Solution. D. Disadvantage.
    26. What can we infer about Matt’s treatment?
    A. It was successful. B. It was impractical.
    C. It was kept secret from his families. D. It was mostly supported by an organization.
    27. How did Matt’ s experience influence him?
    A. He managed to become a doctor.
    B. He decided to help others in return.
    C. He started to found a charity for poor patients.
    D. He promised to give the money back to the strangers.

    Help Hermit Crabs
Hermit crabs(寄居蟹) are nature's recyclers. They eat waste and help keep oceans and shores clean. Unlike other crabs, the hermit crab has a thin outer shell over its soft tail. This makes the hermit crab easy prey for hungry predators(天敌). Hermit crabs stay safe by living in old seashells. A hermit crab is picky(狡猾); it tries on many shells until it finds one that fits just right. In recent years, however, many hermit crabs have had trouble finding their perfect homes. What is the problems? There are not enough shells to go around!
One reason for the seashell shortage is that ocean water is not as clean as it once was. This has caused chemical changes to sea water. Some sea animals, like snails, are affected by these changes. Now there are fewer snails making shells. People visiting the beach often take shells home as souvenirs(纪念品).This is another problem. Other people even take shells for their own pet hermit crabs! They do not realize that hermit crabs in the wild need those shells too.
Now people are working to solve this hermit crab housing shortage. They are teaching beach-Boers to leave seashells where they belong--at the seashore! Some people even make fake seashells that they hope the hermit crabs will like. For example, a group called Project Shelter invited people who visited their website to create different designs for hermit crab shells.
These designers had a lot to consider. What kind of material should be used to build a seashell? The material must be light enough for the hermit crab to carry, but strong enough to protect the crab from predators. The man-made shells could not contain glue or any other substance(物质)that might harm a hermit crab. Another challenge with building a hermit crab home was the opening to the shell. Too big would mean the crab would not feel safe. Too small would be uncomfortable, and the crab would not want to move in.
The Project Shelter shells are placed in the wild for hermit crabs to find. Lucky hermit crabs can move into these new dream homes.
    28. Where can hermit crabs stay safe?
    A. In different old seashells. B. Behind the waste they'll eat.
    C. In their own thin outer shells. D. Under the stones at the seashore.

    29. According to the passage, what should be put in the web?

    A. The methods to recycle the wastes. B. The ways to help the hermit crabs.
    C. The materials of seashells. D. The designs of websites.
    30. What does the underlined word “fake" in Para. 3 mean?
    A. man-made B. perfect
    C. hard D. comfortable
    31. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. The Project Shelter Group. B. The shortage of the seashell.
    C. New homes for hermit crabs. D. The recyclers of the nature.
    D
You’re probably used to the periodic upgrades (定期更新) in our cellphone networks. There was 2G, which came along in 1991, replaced with 3G in 2001, followed by 4G in 2009. Now we're hearing about the coming of 5G.
But 5G is a much bigger leap than what’s come before.Of course, 5G is much faster than 4G in the real world. A 5G phone in a 5G city will enjoy Internet speeds between nine and 20 times as fast. The arrival of 5G also means enormous leaps forward in capacity so much that every cell-phone plan will offer cheap, truly unlimited Internet access.
For example, apps will no longer degrade your video or postpone downloading when you’re out of Wi-Fi range. Furthermore, our phones can become more powerful. Today the processors in our devices are limited by heat and battery capacity. But imagine, Hanna says, if your phone is tied, by a 5G connection, to a much more powerful computer online. “It’s happening remotely, but because it’s such a high-speed connection, it will feel as though the additional processor is inside your device, in your hand,” he says.
Not everyone is thrilled by the 5G development. The new standard gets its speed partly by using existing transmission frequencies more efficiently. These frequencies are much higher than anything we’ve used for cellular, which means they can offer unbelievable speed but at the expense of range. Millimeter-wave cellular towers(毫米波蜂窝塔) have to be about 500 feet apart. Cell carriers not only will have to upgrade all their cell transceivers(收发器) but will install a lot more of them as well. That’s why the millimeter-wave flavor of 5G will be available only in densely populated cities such as New York.
The need to install more small cells means more rectangular boxes on lampposts, and more industrial-looking ugliness in places where local residents don’t always want it. But 5G is a train that can’t be stopped.
Here’s to all those engineers and their millimeter waves. Someday we’ll tell our grand kids about the days when YouTube videos paused annoyingly, and the only way cars could communicate was by honking.
    32. What do we know about 5G according to the passage?
    A. It is a periodic upgrade in cellphone networks.
    B. It is the biggest leap with limited Internet access.
    C. 5G connection can provide the fastest Internet speed.
    D. 5G can offer the cheapest Internet access at high speed.
    33. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?
A.The traditional processor is actually inside your device when you use a 5G connection.
    B. The new standard gets its fast speed largely by using transmission frequencies effectively.
    C. Cell carriers will have to fix a lot more of cell transceivers to offer 5G cellphone networks.
    D. Not all local residents approve of installing too many small cells in their neighborhood.
    34. What is the tone of the author in writing the last paragraph?
    A. Critical. B. Depressed. C. Indifferent. D. Humorous.
    35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.5G is a nonstop train B. 5G is just around the corner
C.5G is welcomed by everyone D. 5G meets with local residents’ disapproval

For many of us, nothing is better than burying our head in a good book. Whether it's a crime story or a biography of someone's amazing life, it's good to read a book to switch off from the distractions of everyday life.
36 It can be educational and broaden the mind. A good novel can make us happy, or make us cry as we sympathize with characters. A list of books about "bibliotherapy” can be offered to patients. 37 It's become so successful that it's about to be extended to children as well.
Professor Philip Davis, author of a book called Reading for Life, studies people in reading groups and found that it's reading literature --- written work thought to have artistic value, that has the best effect. He told the BBC that when reading something for pleasure, "...the brain begins to work from different parts, and it gets excited, it gets pre — emotional. 38 ”
Of course, it's easy in our smartphone generation to abandon a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a paperback could be a simple way to help maintain our mental health. 39 And they may allow you to see that awkward situation you've been anxious about for weeks from someone else's point of view.
40 If the book list doesn't appeal, you could read book reviews, visit a library or bookshop or ask a friend. Once you've found the right text, you'll be fascinated!
    A. You can see the brain coming to life.
    B. And you could always use an e-reader.
    C. You can lend it to friends and forget you did.
    D. It may seem obvious that reading is good for us.
    E. It's thought that they can help you set targets and find focus.
    F. Reading books is actually being identified as a treatment to sickness.
    G. If you're not a concerned reader, it can be hard to know where to begin.

    第二节 续写(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Fifteen years ago, I was born in a big family. I had been taught that money couldn’t buy everything ever since I was a little kid. My parents are the most hard-working people I have ever seen. As much as my parents tried to teach me these values, some could only be learned through personal experiences.
As a child, I would sit in the church trying to concentrate on the words of the priest (牧师), but my attention was soon attracted by the shining gold and the diamonds worn by the Saturday churchgoers. As my eyes began to wander, I noticed men dressed in their tailored suits and shirts accompanied by women in their designer dresses with matching handbags and shoes.
My family, on the other hand, was the opposite of rich. Our hand-me-down clothes had been washed so many times that the colors had become dull and lifeless. Although this revealed the money struggles of our large family, our faces were always washed and hair neatly combed. When sitting on the old big red and white truck after the service, I pictured the lives led by those driving their brand-new cars, wishing I would be one of them.
I never stopped those fantasies, even when I was in middle school. Since it was a private school, most of the children came from wealthy families. As a result, I constantly felt ashamed. Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my poverty was embarrassingly apparent on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sister’s old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her like a shadow. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.
    注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

    作文:
    Dear Toby,
Glad to hear from you. You asked me about the sports optional courses in our school, and I hope the following information may give you a rough idea.
In an attempt to enrich campus life and cultivate all-round students, our school has set up a wide variety of sports optional courses ranging from ping-pong, football to running and swimming. Since those courses will meet different needs and interests, every student can get actively involved. As for me, I’ve taken basketball, since it can develop my team spirit and give me strength to confront the challenges in my life.
All in all, I sincerely invite you to come to our school and see for yourself.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    续写:
    One possible version
However, I grew upset as I couldn’t afford a gift. It would be embarrassing to be present without gift, but her insistence put me in dilemma. Ultimately, I accepted her invitation against my will. I was wondering what to do when the values my parents taught me flashed across my mind. “Why not make gift by myself?” I made a toy with materials on hand and put it into box. Finally, the big day came.
When she opened the gift box, my heart missed a beat. On seeing the toy, the boys and girls froze with surprise and then burst into laughter. I lowered my head in shame, tears streaming down my cheeks. At this moment, Julie came over and hugged me tightly, saying it was the best gift that she had ever received. I brightened up at her words and was fully aware that money couldn’t buy every thing. It was our friendship that really mattered. I would cherish this moment forever.
