It was taught to him by a teacher in his schooling years, and means “Only those who work hard will get what they want”.“I love this, not only because of the meaning, but the fact that the word ‘man’ in the saying reminds me of myself since my name ends with ‘Man’. So, it’s like an inner voice that reminds me to give my best in everything, and therefore I live with that philosophy in my life. I am currently a lecturer at University Malaysia Sarawak, majoring in English Language teaching and Cognitive Linguistics,” explains Chuah.Asked what the best part about being Malaysian is, he answers: “Being able to learn and embrace the diversity of cultures, languages and beliefs of the different races living together in Malaysia, without the fear of losing one‟s own identity. I personally believe I have grown into a unique breed -- of a Malaysian first“ -- whereby I can speak multiple languages fluently and also appreciate various cultural practices openly.”Being in Malaysia, Chuah feels that everyone has the right to highlight their differences, even if they come from different backgrounds.“We can still come together in sharing some common humanitarian (人道主义) values that we hold in our respective communities. Living in a rural area of Sarawak, we still share many common national borders and values and a love for peace and harmony among my family and the people here.”Chuah concludes: “Even if we disagree on certain things, we still continue to respect each other with the knowledge that none of us wants to do any harm. Because at the end of the day, we get to know each other more and become better Malaysians for it.”4. Why is Chuah fond of the Arabic saying?A. Because it was taught by his favorite teacher.B. Because it stresses the importance of setting goals.C. Because his name has the same meaning as the saying.D. Because it reminds him to spare no efforts to do things.5. Which saying can best explain Chuah’s life philosophy?A. Great minds think alike. B. Diligence is the mother of success.C. Good advice is beyond all price. D. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.6. What is the biggest advantage of being Malaysian in Chuah’s opinion?A. Speaking multiple languages fluently.B. Having the chance to get all he wants.C. Being a successful English lecturer easily.D. Experiencing various cultures without losing one’s own identity.7. What does Chuah mainly stress in the last two paragraphs?A. People should hold the same beliefs.B. It’s unacceptable to disagree on certain things.C. It’s vital to respect and live in harmony with each other.D. Sharing common humanitarian values is definitely not easy.CVideo calls are a common occurrence, but have you imagined being able to touch the person on the other end of the line? Scientists are making this a reality. Researchers at the University of new South Wales, Australia have invented a soft skin stretch device(SSD). A haptic device that can recreate the sense of touch. Haptic technology mimics the experience of touch by stimulating localized areas of the skin in ways that are similar to what is felt in the real world, through force, vibration or motion.Vibration is the most common haptic technology today and has been built into many electronic devices such as one attached to the back of the trackpad(触摸板) in laptops, which simulates a button clicking. However, haptic feedback with vibration becomes less sensitive when used continuously. The existing technology also has great difficulty recreating the sense of touch with objects in virtual environments or located remotely. According to Mai Thanh Thai, lead author of the study. The new technology overcomes issues with existing haptic devices. The research team introduced a novel method to recreate the sense of touch through a soft artificial “muscles”.“Our three-way directional skin stretch device, built into the fingertips of the wearable glove we also created is like wearing a second skin-- its soft stretchable and mimics the sense of touch-- and will enable new forms of haptic communication to enhance everyday activities”said Thanh Nho Do, senior author of the study.Imagine you are at home and you call your friend who is in Australia. You wear a haptic glove with the SSDs, and your friends also wears a glove with integrated 3D force sensors. If your friend picks up an object, it will physically press against your friend’s fingers. And their glove with 3D force sensors will measure with interactions. The force signals can be sent to your glove so your device will generate the same 3D forces. Making you experience the same sense of touch as your friend. The haptic devices could be applied in various situations, allowing users to feel objects inside a virtual world or at a distance. It could also be used in medical practices. Doctors can feel a patient's organ tissues. With surgical tools without touching them.8. What does the passage imply?A. SSDs become less sensitive when used continuously.B. SSDs can recreate the sense of touch without vibration.C. SSDs have great advantages over existing haptic devices.D. SSDs can help users touch the person through video calls.9. Paragraph 6 mainly tells us about.________A. How the device works.B. Why the device is usedC. What the device createsD. How the device is invented10. How does the author think of the prospect of SSDs?A. hopeless B. uncertain.C. worrying. D. cheerful.11. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. A glove that can measure some interactions.B. A sensor that can imitate touch at a distance.C. A device that can recreate the sense of touch.D. A tool could be applied in medical practices.DDiscoveries in science and technology are thought by “untaught minds” to come in blinding flashes or as the result of dramatic accidents. Sir Alexander Fleming did not, as legend would have it, look at the mold () on a piece of cheese and get the idea for penicillin there and then. He experimented with antibacterial substances for nine years before he made his discovery. Inventions and innovations almost always come out of tough trial and error. Innovation is like soccer; even the best players miss the goal and have their shots blocked much more frequently than they score. The point is that the players who score most are the ones who take most shots at the goal—and so it goes with innovation in any field of activity. The prime difference between innovation and others is one of approach. Everybody gets ideas, but innovators work consciously on theirs, and they follow them through until they prove practicable or otherwise. What ordinary people see as fanciful abstractions, professional innovators see as solid possibilities.“Creative thinking may mean simply the realization that there’s no particular goodness in doing things the way they have always been done.” Wrote Rudolph Flesch, a language authority. This accounts for our reaction to seemingly simple innovations like plastic garbage bags and suitcases on wheels that make life more convenient: “How come nobody thought of that before?”The creative approach begins with the proposal that nothing be as it appears. Innovators will not accept that there is only one way to do anything. Faced with getting from A to B, the average person will automatically set out on the best-known and apparently simplest route. The innovator will search for alternate courses, which may prove easier in the long run and are sure to be more interesting and challenging even if they lead to dead ends. Highly creative individuals really do march to a different drummer.12 What does the author probably mean by “untaught mind” in the first paragraph?A. An individual who often comes up with new ideas by accident.B. A person who has had no education.C. A citizen of a society that restricts personal creativity.D. A person ignorant of the hard work involved in experimentation.13. According to the author, what differs innovators from non-innovators?A. The way they present their findings. B. The way they deal with problems.C. The intelligence they possess. D. The variety of ideas they have.14 The phrase “march to a different drummer” (the last line of the passage) suggests that highly creative individuals are ________.A. unwilling to follow common ways of doing thingsB. diligent in pursuing their goalsC. concerned about the advance of societyD. devoted to the progress of science15. The most suitable title for this passage might be ________.A. The Relation Between Creation and DiligenceB. To Be a Creative Expert in the Study of Human CreativityC. What Are So Special about Creative IndividualsD. Discoveries and Innovation第二节( 5小题; 每小题 2分,满分 10)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。请将答案写在答题卷上。You probably start this new academic year with a resolution to study harder. ____16____ Recent discoveries in brain research point to better ways to learn. How does the brain save new information?
