I was brushing my teeth getting ready for bed when the phone rang.
“Lindy, this is Leslie,” she said. “I hope I didn’t catch you sleeping.”
I didn’t know Leslie very well. We had children of similar ages and occasionally spoke with each other at various community events, but to say we were friends was a stretch.
She asked me a most peculiar question “Do you have room for turkeys in your freezer?”
We had lots of room in our freezer. In fact, we had too much room. My husband’s business had taken a downturn and we were pretty much at the bottom of our food supply.
“Sure,” I responded, “Did your freezer break down?”
“Not exactly,” Leslie replied, “but if you will give me directions to your house I will explain when I get there.”
A few minutes later, Leslie stepped down from a huge freezer truck and explained that her husband serviced a small grocery store that had just lost its lease. They had to empty all the freezers before midnight. They thought it was a shame to just throw away all this good food so she began to go through her list of contacts, dropping off food to anyone she could think of who might be willing to take it.
As we started carrying blocks of food to fill our freezer. I asked her. “When will you be coming back for all this?” Leslie just laughed, “We don’t want it back. It is yours to eat, to share to enjoy!”
Then she and her husband climbed back into their truck, waved goodbye and backed down the driveway.
Leslie had no idea that we were in such a tight financial spot that we struggled to buy groceries. It was not something that I shared with anyone. Having plenty of food for my family was a huge stress reliever during a difficult time.
Over the next several months we ate well and shared turkey with friends, family and neighbors. By the time the freezer food finally ran out we were back on our feet.
Yet I always remember that summer night when an acquaintance called. She had a smile in her voice when she asked, “Do you have room for turkeys?”
    4. How might the author feel when Leslie called?
    A. Surprised. B. Annoyed. C. Depressed. D. Pleased.
    5. What does the underlined word “stretch” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Mistake B. Truth C. Overstatement D. Argument
    6. What can we infer about Leslie?
    A. She needed help to store the frozen food.
    B. She knew Lindy was in need of food.
    C. She felt relieved to throw away the food.
    D. She wanted to put the food to good use.
    7. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Room for Turkeys B. A Midnight Visitor
    C. Food Delivery D. An Empty Freezer
A 5. C 6. D 7. A
由文第三段“I didn’t know Leslie very well. We had children of similar ages and occasionally spoke with each other at various community events, but to say we were friends was a stretch.”(我和莱斯利不太熟。
由该词所在句“I didn’t know Leslie very well. We had children of similar ages and occasionally spoke with each other at various community events, but to say we were friends was a stretch.”(我和莱斯利不太熟。
由文第八段“They thought it was a shame to just throw away all this good food so she began to go through her list of contacts, dropping off food to anyone she could think of who might be willing to take it.”(他们认为扔掉这些美味的食物是一种耻辱,所以她开始查看自己的联系人名单,把食物送给她能想到的任何愿意吃的人。)
由文第四段“She asked me a most peculiar question “Do you have room for turkeys in your freezer?””(她问了我一个最奇怪的问题:“你的冰箱里有放火鸡的空间吗?”)以及文最后一段最后一句“She had a smile in her voice when she asked, “Do you have room for turkeys?””(当她问道:“你有空间放火鸡吗?”) 故选A项。
    C
This week Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy released a warning about the risks that social media presents to the mental health of children and teenagers. Adolescent mental health has been declining for years, and an increasing amount of research suggests that social media platforms could be partially to blame. But experts continue to debate just how much impact they have.
Numerous studies demonstrate that adolescent rates of depression, anxiety and loneliness have skyrocketed in the U. S. and elsewhere since around the time that smartphones and social media became ever-present.
Yet the role social media plays has been widely debated. Some researchers have sounded the alarm, arguing that social media provides the most credible explanation for problems such as enhanced teen loneliness. Other researchers have been sitting on the fence. In 2019 Jeff Hancock founding director of the Social Media Lab at Stanford University, and his colleagues completed an analysis of 226 scientific papers dating back to 2006. They concluded that social media us was associated with a slight increase in depression and anxiety but also improvements in feelings of belonging and connectedness.
Some recent studies have attempted to clarify the link between social media and mental health, asking, for instance, whether social media use is causing depression or whether people are being more active on social media because they’re depressed. In an attempt to present evidence, Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Alexey Makarin and two of his colleagues conducted mental health surveys taken by college students across the country. Their study, published in 2022, found that swollen rates of depression and anxiety, as well as declined academic performance, followed Facebook’s arrival. Makarin says much of the harm they documented came from social comparisons: students viewed the online profiles of their peers and believed them to “have nicer lives, party more often, have more friends and look better.”
“In total, there’s an increasingly clear picture that, indeed, social media has a negative impact on mental health,” Makarin says. “We are not saying that social media can explain 100 percent of the rise of mental health issues... But it could potentially explain a sizeable portion.”
    8. What do we know about social media?
    A. It has negative influence on adolescent mental health.
    B. It is the leading cause of adolescent depression.
    C. It plays an important role in treating mental illness.
    D. Its impact on mental health is still unknown.
    9. What is Jeff Hancock’s attitude towards social media?
    A. Critical. B. Objective C. Favorable. D. Indifferent.
    10. How does social media cause harm to teenagers according to Makarin?
    A. By threatening their academic performance.
    B. By presenting them with online profiles.
    C. By encouraging them to party more often.
    D. By making them feel worse-off than others.
    11. What is the main purpose of the text?
    A. To advocate the harms of social media to teenagers’ mental health.
    B. To analyze the causes of worsening adolescent mental health.
    C. To present findings on the link between social media and mental health.
    D. To propose an effective approach to handling mental illness.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“Adolescent mental health has been declining for years, and an increasing amount of research suggests that social media platforms could be partially to blame.”(多年来,青少年的心理健康状况一直在下降,越来越多的研究表明,社交媒体平台可能是部分原因);第二段“Numerous studies demonstrate that adolescent rates of depression, anxiety and loneliness have skyrocketed in the U. S. and elsewhere since around the time that smartphones and social media became ever-present.”(大量研究表明,自从智能手机和社交媒体无处不在以来,美国和其他地方的青少年抑郁、焦虑和孤独的比例急剧上升。) 故选A项。
根据第三段“They concluded that social media us was associated with a slight increase in depression and anxiety but also improvements in feelings of belonging and connectedness.”(他们得出结论,社交媒体与抑郁和焦虑的轻微增加有关,但也与归属感和联系感的改善有关)可知,Jeff Hancock对社交媒体的态度是客观的。
根据第四段“Makarin says much of the harm they documented came from social comparisons: students viewed the online profiles of their peers and believed them to “have nicer lives, party more often, have more friends and look better.”( Makarin说,他们记录的大部分危害来自社会比较:学生们在网上查看同龄人的资料,认为他们“生活得更好,聚会更频繁,朋友更多,看起来更好)可知,Makarin认为,社交媒体让他们觉得自己比别人差,这对青少年的心理健康不利。故选D项。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Adolescent mental health has been declining for years, and an increasing amount of research suggests that social media platforms could be partially to blame. But experts continue to debate just how much impact they have.”(多年来,青少年的心理健康状况一直在下降,越来越多的研究表明,社交媒体平台可能是部分原因。

Drone delivery technology is making huge progress this year as delivery company Zipline announces its latest device that it has been working on since 2014.
The device, known as the Platform 2 (P2) system, could cut delivery times in half and potentially be a new life-saving asset for delivering medical supplies, prescriptions and food.
The build of the P2 Zip consists of a droid (机器人), which is essentially a streamlined box with a hidden propeller (螺旋桨) at the rear. A person sending out a delivery will put the package within the droid, which will then be placed inside the belly of one of Zipline’s P2 Zip drones.
Once the P2 Zip takes off, it flies at a height of approximately 300 feet in the air. The drone can carry up to eight pounds at a time and can travel as far as an out-and-back service distance of 10 miles. Once the drone reaches its destination, a second droid is lowered and uses sensor cameras to detect where to land the package. The recipient of the package can then open the droid to retrieve the package, and the droid is then lifted back up into the drone to continue on its journey back to either charge itself or retrieve another order.
One of the best benefits of this new invention is that it will make delivering packages locally a lot quicker. The drone cannot make long journeys; however, it can certainly make it from your local grocery store to your house and back without an issue.
This could also be a potentially life-saving invention as the company will be cooperating with hospitals and other health care facilities Michigan Medicine and Salt Lake City’s Intermountain Health already plan on using it to deliver prescriptions. It will also be used by some companies to deliver blood and vaccines to remote areas. At the same time, companies like Sweetgreen have also signed on to use the service to deliver food to customers’ homes.
Zipline hopes to have the P2 Zip working and in service in just about a year. The only downside I can imagine is that many other tech companies are working fast to make drone delivery happen, and we may have an issue of drone traffic in the sky before we know it. Until then, we’ll have to see what plans these companies have to limit that issue.
    12. What is the P2 Zip according to the text?
    A. A delivery company B. A streamlined box
    C. A delivery device D. An operational system
    13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. The working process of the device B. The advantages of the device
    C. The significance of the device D. The design of the device
    14. Which of the following can be inferred about the new invention?
    A. It makes it easy to deliver packages across the country
    B. It has been used to deliver prescriptions by hospitals
    C. It is originally designed to save people’s lives
    D. It will still be some time before it comes into use
    15. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the invention?
    A. Worried B. Hopeful C. Doubtful D. Indifferent
C 13. A 14. D 15. B

由文首句“Drone delivery technology is making huge progress this year as delivery company Zipline announces its latest device that it has been working on since 2014.”(随着快递公司Zipline宣布其自2014年以来一直在研发的最新设备,无人机快递技术今年取得了巨大进展。)以及第二段首句“The device, known as the Platform 2 (P2) system, could cut delivery times in half and potentially be a new life-saving asset for delivering medical supplies, prescriptions and food.”(该设备被称为平台2(P2)系统,可以将交付时间缩短一半,并有可能成为交付医疗用品、处方和食品的新的救生资产。)
由文第四段的“Once the drone reaches its destination, a second droid is lowered and uses sensor cameras to detect where to land the package. The recipient of the package can then open the droid to retrieve the package, and the droid is then lifted back up into the drone to continue on its journey back to either charge itself or retrieve another order.”(一旦无人机到达目的地,第二个机器人就会下降,并使用传感器摄像头检测包裹的降落位置。
由文最后一段第一句“Zipline hopes to have the P2 Zip working and in service in just about a year.”(Zipline希望在大约一年内让P2 Zip投入使用。)

How to Set Effective Writing Goal
Achievable writing goals require a certain ability to look inwards. You must evaluate where you are in your writing life, where you want to go, and how you work best. But how can you set goals that are realistic, useful, and lead you “confidently in the direction of your dreams”?
Observe your own habits and patterns
____16____. Set writing goals that are useful to you by taking stock of what you know about yourself: what type of writer are you? How do you react emotionally when faced with concrete goals? And when can you realistically squeeze some writing into your schedule?
Just as runners don’t wear hiking boots, writers must set goals that accommodate their personalities and circumstances.
Some goals, like winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, are not really up to us. They’re perfectly valid dreams, but they depend on external factors we can’t control. ____17____
Break your big goals down into smaller milestone
Most projects have several phases containing several milestones along the way. If you ever find you can’t work toward your bigger goal, you can usually assume that your stepping-stone goals aren’t small enough. ____18____
If word counts stress you out, make your goals measurable in other ways: commit to writing X number of days a month, or dedicate X number of hours to your writing every weekend. Measure your progress in a way that requires you to invest time and effort but takes a little pressure off of the outcome
    ____19____
A wise goal-setter is emotionally prepared for obstacles and can adapt their goals to meet changes in circumstances. ____20____, or you’re dealing with unexpected life events that leave little room for pursuing your writing goals.
Always adjust your goal to fit your new circumstances and stand ready to make changes regardless of the outcome. Any struggle to meet your writing goals shouldn’t result in doubt about whether you’re really a writer or not.
    A. Keep working and make changes
    B. Be flexible and prepared for obstacles
    C. Always break goals down into smaller tasks
    D. Each person responds differently to goal-setting
    E. So try to avoid such factors in your goal statements
    F. It’s not easy to break big goals down into smaller tasks
    G. You may find that writing a book takes longer than anticipated
D 17. E 18. C 19. B 20. G
根据后句“Set writing goals that are useful to you by taking stock of what you know about yourself: what type of writer are you?”(通过评估你对自己的了解,设定对你有用的写作目标:你是什么类型的作家?)
根据前句“They’re perfectly valid dreams, but they depend on external factors we can’t control.”(它们是完全有效的梦想,但它们取决于我们无法控制的外部因素。)可知,此处指出某些不好控制的因素,E选项的“So try to avoid such factors in your goal statements”(所以在你的目标陈述中尽量避免这些因素),前后句存在因果关系,故选E。

“I feel so alone. And cold. And tired,” I announced to the empty train platform. I glanced at my watch. It was midnight. Why had I decided to travel from Prague to Interlaken without staying somewhere along the way for a day or two? The chill in my bones on that March morning in Switzerland made me question the wisdom of making the eighteen-hour trip via three separate trains.
I was wrapping up a solo-backpacking trip across Europe during my three-week vacation. I wanted to get in as much sightseeing as possible since it was my first time in Europe. By the end of my journey, I was weary of hauling the souvenirs I had purchased and sleeping in large hostel dorm rooms.
“What I wouldn’t give for a hot bath, clean clothes, and a soft bed right now. Or even just someone to talk to.” It felt a little weird speaking to the vacant station, but doing so was preventing me from falling asleep, which was important for safety reasons.
Since I still had a couple of hours before my train arrived, I tried to think of something to fill the time. I was too exhausted to read or journal.
Looking around on the hard wooden bench I saw only vacant tracks, dark rail cars, and electronic signs with no incoming trains to announce. Most of the train cars were modern, but one series of cars caught my eye. It was the legendary Orient Express.
The dining car probably served phenomenal meals and had white tablecloths with cloth napkins. The sleepers were likely cozy and comfortable with private bathrooms that had lovely-scented soaps and shampoo.
A sigh escaped my lips. I returned my gaze to the empty tracks in front of me, daydreams of the Orient Express streaming through my mind.
One such dream was interrupted by a squeak and then a slam. I tensed and looked over my shoulder, wondering who else would be on the platform.
There stepping down from the Orient Express was a man wearing a blue uniform walking toward me. He held a single, blood red rose. I puzzled as to what a train conductor would do with a flower at that time of night.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Yet he came to a stop beside the bench and handed me the flower.

Words failed me when I reached out and accepted the flower.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yet he came to a stop beside the bench and handed me the flower. Surprised and confused, I was pretty sure that I had never seen this man before. So I explained to him that he must have mistaken me for someone else. But the man was still holding the flower. “I happened to look out the window while I was working on the Orient, and saw you sitting here all alone.” he said. “You looked so lonely and cold, so I couldn’t help but think you needed something to lift your spirits.” Looking up at him, I saw a gentle smile displayed on his lips. A current of warmth swept through my cold body, making everything seem much more cheerful.
Words failed me while I reached out and accepted the flower. Holding it delicately with my hands that were no longer stiff from the cold, I was choking with emotions, unable to find proper words to show how grateful I was at that moment. The man nodded understandingly before he turned around and headed back towards the train. My mind was so caught up in replaying the random act of kindness that the remainder of my wait at the station passed without notice. I carried the rose with me for the rest of the journey, which reminded me of the angel who surprised me in a deserted train station in the middle of the night, and how his kindness lifted my spirits while replacing my loneliness with joy.
