根据小标题“Capitol Debate(国会辩论)”下段的“Never debated before? No worries. Thousands of shy students have walked through our doors to become confident young adults and leaders in their community.(从未辩论过?
根据小标题“ID Tech Summer Camp (ID技术夏令营)”中介绍的最后一句“With 5 students max per instructor, we perfectly blend personalized learning and time to socialize and instructor feedback will be delivered via email so you can track your child’s success.

In April, 1967 my brother, Harvey Cooley, met a soldier, David Lawson during basic training. In their free time, they hung out together. As the weeks went by, they grew very close, almost like brothers. However, after basic training, soldiers moved on to advanced training. They thought they would never see each other again.
One day in September, 1967, these men were both in California waiting for transport to the front. Harvey and David had an unexpected surprise when they ran into each other. They talked very briefly since they had got to report in five minutes. They agreed to meet after they were discharged(退伍)from the service. Harvey wrote a brief note which he gave to David showing the date and location they were to meet.
Harvey never made it back home. He died while saving two soldiers during enemy fire. David did not learn of Harvey’s death until the mid 1980s. he wrote a letter to Harvey after he returned home and asked if they could postpone their meeting to a later date. His letter was unanswered. David felt then that Harvey must not have made it back. He knew Harvey would surely have answered his letter if he had been able to.
While David was searching the internet for Information about Harvey, he found a poem dedicated(献给) to Harvey by me. He sent me an email and told me about his friendship with Harvey and we swapped phone numbers.
David called me and we talked about his friendship with Harvey. While on the phone with David, I learned about the note Harvey had written for him. David still had the note and sent me a copy of it.
It is amazing, to say the least, that David was able to track(追查到) me down. Even more amazing is the fact that he still had Harvey’s note after all these years. David told me it was a joy to finally hear from Harvey through me after over forty years.
    4. What did Harvey and David decide to do after they met unexpectedly?
    A. Meet after they returned. B. Leave the army.
    C. Write a report. D. Go to advanced training.
    5. What did David do when he didn’t hear from Harvey?
    A. He decided to meet Harvey at a later time
    B. He went to the front to look for Harvey
    C. He feared that Harvey had died
    D. He asked two soldiers about Harvey
    6. The underlined word “postpone” in Paragraph 3 means ______.
    A. talk about B. put off
    C. attend D. call
    7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. A Note Kept for Over Forty Years B. Friendship Developed in the War
    C. A Letter Never Answered D. Two Brothers Never Separated
A 5. C 6. B 7. A
They agreed to meet after they were discharged(退伍)from the service. Harvey wrote a brief note which he gave to David showing the date and location they were to meet.“他们同意退役后见面。 故选A。
His letter was unanswered. David felt then that Harvey must not have made it back.“他的信没有回音。
It is amazing, to say the least, that David was able to track(追查到) me down. Even more amazing is the fact that he still had Harvey’s note after all these years. David told me it was a joy to finally hear from Harvey through me after over forty years.“退一步说,大卫居然能找到我,这太不可思议了。 A Note Kept for Over Forty Years “保存了40多年的纸条”是最佳标题。故选A。
    C
Whales, like all mammals(哺乳动物), need air, and come to the surface to breathe through a blowhole. A drone(无人机) that floats over the blowholes of humpback whales as they are making annual journey along Australia’s east coast is being used by Australian scientists for collecting nasal mucus(鼻腔粘液)of whales.
Vanessa Pirotta, a biologist at Macquarie University says that nasal mucus indicates the health of the whale. “It is the biological mixture that you see as a whale takes a breath as it surfaces from the water,” she said. You can hear sounds of sharp breaths as a whale breathes because, after all, they are animals like you and I. So as they take a breath it is a lot of lung bacteria(细菌)coming out from their lungs(肺), which we can collect to provide a brief idea of whale health.
Australian researchers have attached a special dish that is used in scientific tests to a drone which flies through the whale's nasal mist. As a whale comes to take a breath-you can actually see it coming to the surface on really good weather days -- the done then lowers, the dish is then opened, collecting nasal mucus for later research.
The research could help to solve one of the secrets of another impressive creature of the deep-the Southern Right whale. Its numbers have recovered on Australia’s west coast since hunting became suppressed but its population on the eastern seaboard is still stubbornly low.
In the past studies into whale health had to rely on examining whales that were either killed or those whales that had been trapped on a beach. Drones allow scientists to collect nasal mucus from free-swimming whales to gather information in a safe way.
    8. What is the drone mainly used to do?
    A. To gather information for researchers.
    B. To record new species of whales.
    C. To make sure of the safety of whales.
    D. To take photos of whales yearly journey.
    9. How can a biologist find out a whale’s health condition in the study?
    A. By examining liquids from its breath.
    B. By checking its lungs on a machine.
    C. By listening to the sounds of its breath.
    D. By studying its similarity with humans.
    10. What does the underlined word “suppressed” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Commercial. B. Rewarding C. Hidden D. Forbidden.
    11. Why is the Southern Right whale mentioned?
    A. To describe the difficulty to track it.
    B. To show the difference between eastern and western coast.
    C. To stress the effect of increasing whale population.
    D. To show the possible application of the research.
A 9. A 10. D 11. D
根据第一段中的“A drone(无人机)that floats over the blowholes of humpback whales as they are making annual journey along Australia's east coast is being used by Australian scientists for collecting nasal mucus(鼻腔粘液)of whales.( 座头鲸每年都要沿着澳大利亚东海岸旅行,澳大利亚科学家利用一架无人机在座头鲸的喷水孔上收集鲸鱼的鼻粘液。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中的“Vanessa Pirotta, a biologist at Macquarie University says that nasal mucus indicates the health of the whale. 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中的“but its population on the eastern seaboard remains stubbornly low.
    D
Some events have been added to the 2024 Olympics, with surfing, break dancing and sport climbing among the recent additions. With them come a group of terms that are foreign to the French language. For some French-language purists, it’s too much to bear to rely on English to praise surfers on their “nose riding”—standing on the front of the board. They’ve decided they need a French solution.
The French government has created a team of language experts devoted to promoting the national language. They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms. The French battle against the influence of other languages isn’t new. In 1994, the Toubon law was passed, forcing the use of French in all government publications, contracts and advertisements. Yet it contained several loopholes(漏洞), which allow brands and companies to extensively use English. As a result, anglicisms(从英语中借用的词) are becoming more obvious.
Julie Neveux, linguistics(语言学) professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economic and cultural model other than our own.” They are particularly present in sports competitions and events, during which athletes from around the world are used to communicating in English. “Sport was one of the first areas to be globalized,” said sports historian Michael Attali. “This phenomenon has strengthened English as the official language.”
Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from infiltrating(渗透) everyday language. By the time French officials agreed on a translation and its definition, the English version has already spread throughout the nation. “Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far,” said Attali.
“There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English,” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”
    12. What will a team of language experts do?
    A. Make French much purer.
    B. Bring English and French together.
    C. Decide upon some new sports terms.
    D. Promote the spread of French in the world.
    13. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. English words. B. French words.
    C. Newly created words. D. Anglicisms
14 What’s the result of previous efforts to stop English from infiltrating French?
    A. Successful. B. Fruitless.
    C. Unmentioned. D. Unimportant.
    15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. All languages should be preserved.
    B. English is more popular than French.
    C. Neveux is positive about the impurity of language.
    D. The exchanges between two languages can be avoided.
C 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第二段“They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms.(他们将在接下来的几年里定期会面,以确定和定义新的体育术语。)”
根据第三段“Julie Neveux, linguistics(语言学) professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economic and cultural model other than our own.”
根据第四段“Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from infiltrating everyday language.(尽管他们尽了最大的努力,没有一个委员会成功地阻止英语渗透到日常语言中。)”
根据最后一段“Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.(语言之所以存在,是因为它们不纯洁。)”
    Where Do Mosquitoes(蚊子)Go in Winter?
Why do mosquitoes ,everywhere in warmer months, disappear completely in winter?____16____Mosquitoes are cold-blooded insects, meaning that they don’t like the cold and prefer temperatures that are 80 degrees .Fahrenheit or more. When the temperature drops, they actually lose their ability to fly and become motionless.
____17____They would never be able to fly far enough. The actual answer to the question is different for male and female mosquitoes. Male mosquitoes? They die. But that’s not just because of the cold. Male mosquitoes have far shorter lifespans(寿命) than females, and they die in autumn.
Female mosquitoes, though, can live through the winter. They hibernate (冬眠). In autumn, the females will go into hollow logs or cracks in the ground and enter this still state.____18____They put off their development, typically for months.
When it warms up again, the females will come out from hibernation. At this point, they’re getting ready to lay their eggs and they need as much blood as possible to help the eggs develop. The females must find a blood meal to provide the protein(蛋白质) needed by their eggs to develop, just in the time, when humans are outdoors in short sleeves enjoying the warming weather.____19____
It actually doesn’t have to be what we humans would consider “cold” to put a mosquito in danger. While these pests live actively when it’s around 80 degrees F, most species can start heading into hibernation when it drops to around 50.____20____This is when female mosquitoes start looking for a place for sleep.
    A. The obvious answer is that it’s cold.
    B. Now it’s time for male mosquitoes to wake up.
    C. It’s only the female mosquitoes that are biting you.
    D. Unlike birds, mosquitoes don’t fly south for the winter.
    E. Anything below 50 degrees is already too cold for most mosquitoes.
    F. They carry on with life only when there is enough water for their needs.
    G. They can hibernate for up to six months in freezing or waterless conditions.
A 17. D 18. G 19. C 20. E
根据上文“Why do mosquitoes ,everywhere in warmer months, disappear completely in winter?” 故选A项。
根据下文“They would never be able to fly far enough.”
根据上文“The females must find a blood meal to provide the protein(蛋白质) needed by their eggs to develop, just in the time, when humans are outdoors in short sleeves enjoying the warming weather.”
根据上文“While these pests live actively when it’s around 80 degrees F, most species can start heading into hibernation when it drops to around 50.”和后文“This is when female mosquitoes start looking for a place for sleep.”

I had tried unsuccessfully to get Frank to the dentist for a good clean. He felt that cleaning his teeth didn’t matter. Only after suffering for several days with a toothache did he finally agree, but under one condition. The dentist would have to treat him in his wheelchair. I called Dr. Bob, who was willing to satisfy my husband’s special needs.
The big day arrived. It was a hot day in June. The office was easy to locate, but parking was very limited. We decided to take our chances and parked across the street at a place with a “No Parking or Towing (拖)” sign. After parking, we walked two blocks to the office. As Dr. Bob had promised, Frank didn’t have to leave his wheelchair and after a few shots, the teeth were painlessly removed. Then we prepared to leave.
Frank uses an electric wheelchair with a breathing control system. He drives the chair by breathing through an air tube. Breathe in to go backward. Breathe out to go forward. His mouth was still too numb to control the wheelchair. Not a problem. I could drive for him.
Once outside, the chair was not responding properly. I had to push with both hands on the handlebars. I pushed the wheelchair with all my strength. The sunny day turned extremely hot with no shade between us and the car.
Exhausted, I stopped pushing. “I have to stop and rest,” I told Frank. Frank had a brilliant idea. His mouth was too numb to breathe out, but he might be able to breathe in, which would move the wheelchair backward. I agreed without hesitation.
We continued moving backward slowly up the sidewalk as I turned my head from left to right looking behind me for obstacles in our path. I noticed several cars slowing down and the people in the cars looking in our direction as they passed. Only when two ladies stopped and asked if we needed help did I realize how silly we looked.
    注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
    Paragraph 1
Of course I declined their assistance.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2
Luckily, just as suddenly as it started, the rain stopped and I hurried to the parking.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Of course I declined their assistance. I told them that we were fine and had everything under control. I didn’t think things could get any worse, but they did. Without warning, the rain poured down. “Oh, please. Oh please.” I said over and over in my head, “Let there be a superman, a volunteer or anyone to help me.” The clock was ticking away. Soon, we were all wet. The rain removed the heat from me, but meanwhile, I was worried that if the rain lasted too long, the electronics in Frank’s wheelchair would be affected.
Luckily, just as suddenly as it started, the rain stopped and I hurried to the parking space. The shining sun returning to a clear blue sky, I had to pick up the pace. As we neared where we parked, I spotted our car. It hadn’t been towed away! Thank goodness! Our adventure came to a pleasant end. We continued walking to our car, relieved, giving thanks, listening to the beautiful songs of the birds and watching the leaves dance in the light wind.
