Thailand’s “loneliest tree”, a tree growing on a rocky island only a few meters in diameter, is being seriously threatened by tourists desperate to get a selfie (自拍) with it.
The small patch of land located just off the country’s eastern coast in Trat Province has been called “Koh Khai Hua Roh” because it looks similar to the island featured in drawings of funny scenes involving a man and a woman trapped on an island in the popular Khai Hua Roh comic. The uninhabited island is quite a sight to behold, as it is home to a lonely tree that struggle to live despite being surrounded by salt water. Unfortunately, the tree’s popularity might just be the death of it.
On Tuesday, the Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization led a team of Thai reporters to Koh Khai Hua Roh in order to observe the country’s loneliest tree. They knew that photos of the lonely tree shared on social media had been attracting an increasing number of tourists to the island, but they had no idea how much damage that could produce.
According to The Nation, several small branches of the tree were found broken off, the tree’s exposed roots appeared to have been stepped heavily on to the point where the outer cover has peeled off (剥落), and the trunk appears to be tilting (倾斜) more than it did a few years back.
Koh Khai Hua Roh island is so tiny that it can only accommodate up to five people at a time, but local authorities admit that selfie-addicted tourists sometimes crowd there in much greater numbers, with some even climbing the poor tree.
The Koh Mak Tambon Administrative Organization plans to kickstart an educational campaign to hopefully teach people to conserve iconic landmarks like Thailand’s loneliest tree. It also plans to take more drastic actions, like restricting the number of tourists allowed to visit the island and making the island only accessible in certain seasons.

Singapore researchers say they have developed a form of electronic skin that can create a sense of touch. They hope their invention will give people with prosthetic hands (假肢手) the ability to identify different objects.
The skin device measures 1 square centimeter. The system contains 100 small sensors that attempt to recreate things like texture (质地), temperature and even pain. The researchers call the device Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin, or ACES, which can process information faster than humans' nervous system. Machine learning methods trained the device to recognize 20 to 30 different textures. It can even correctly read Braille letters most of the time, the researchers say.
The system does not require the users' movement to work. Humans need to slide to feel texture. But in this case the skin, with just a single touch, is able to detect textures of different roughness.
A demonstration showed that the device could identify the difference between a soft ball and a solid plastic one. “When you lose your sense of touch, you essentially become numb and prosthetic users face that problem,” said Benjamin Tee, leader of the research team. “So by recreating an artificial version of the skin, for their prosthetic devices, they can hold a hand and feel the warmth and feel that it is soft.”
Tee said his idea for the device came from the movie Star Wars, when character Luke Skywalker loses his right hand and it is replaced with a robotic one. In the film, the new hand is able to experience touch sensations just like the real one.
The artificial skin technology is still going through experiments and development. But Tee said there had already been a lot of interest in the system, especially from the medical community. Tee said similar inventions that his team has developed include see-through skin that can repair itself when torn and a material for wearable electronic devices that gives off light.
28.Which of the following can best describe ACES?
A.Tiny and smart. B.Simple and fashionable.
    C.Rough and ready. D.See-through and short-lived.
29.What do Benjamin Tee's words mean?
A.The artificial skin feels warm when touched.
B.The prosthetic devices should be made softer.
C.The device can recreate the feeling of real touch.
D.The sense of touch is often overlooked by people.
30.What inspired Benjamin Tee to develop ACES?
A.The financial needs. B.A scene of a famous movie.
C.The interest in Braille letters. D.A desire to help those in need.
31.What does Benjamin Tee think of the artificial skin technology?
    A.Mature B.Unreliable C.Promising D.Debatable
    D
Although vaccines are required for entry into school in most places in the United States, the government does allow for exceptions, like religious reasons.
In the last few years, the rates of vaccine-preventable illness have been on the rise. In most cases, these outbreaks began with children who were unvaccinated. To deal with this threat, some schools in New York have been refusing to allow unvaccinated children to attend school. Several parents thought this was unfair and filed lawsuits. Just recently, though, a court ruled in favor of the city schools.
The court made the right decision. Vaccine policy depends not only on the added protection that vaccines provide for those who get shots, but also on the decreased likelihood that anyone will come into contact with the disease. This is known as community immunity. It refers to the fact that when enough people are immunized, then there really can’t be an outbreak. And if there can’t be an outbreak, then everyone is protected.
This is important, because there are people who cannot be given immunizations for various reasons. For example, small babies can’t be given all vaccines.
In 1995, the chicken pox vaccine was introduced in the United States. Over time, more and more children received it. In 2011, a study looked at how the program affected the number of children who died from the disease.
The first thing noted in the paper was that death from chicken pox went down considerably after the vaccine was introduced. From 2001 through 2007, the rates of death remained much lower, with just a few children dying from chicken pox nationally each year.
What’s more from 2004 through 2007, not one child less than 1 year of age died in the United States from chicken pox. This is important, because we cannot give the chicken pox vaccine to babies. In other words, all those babies were saved not because we vaccinated them against this illness, but because older children were.
Therefore, people who refuse to vaccinate their children aren’t just putting themselves at risk — they’re putting everyone else in danger, too.
32.Whose interest did the judges take into consideration?
    A.Students’. B.School leaders’. C.Several parents’. D.Unvaccinated kids’.
33.What is needed to prevent disease outbreaks through “community immunity”?
    A.Requiring everyone to be immune.
B.Vaccinating babies as early as possible.
C.Making sure enough people get vaccinated.
    D.Separating unvaccinated people from vaccinated.
34.What does the study about the chicken pox vaccine show?
A.The vaccine is safe for every kid. B.No deaths have been seen since 2004.
C.The vaccine has lowered the death rate. D.The vaccine is more effective among babies.
35.Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.No vaccine, no risk. B.No vaccine, no school.
C.Vaccination is a personal choice. D.Vaccine-preventable illness is dropping.

    根据下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is known to us that every year of high school is a tough and busy time. 36 We all know that not getting enough sleep is not good for our health, but it has been found that less sleep could even cause us to have fewer friends.
According to researchers from the University of California, people who don’t get enough sleep are less willing to socialize with others. 37
The researchers carried out a small study. They tested 18 young participants who had just had a good night’s sleep, and tested them again after a sleepless night. 38 When each person on the video got too “close”, they could choose to stop the video.
The results showed that the participants kept each person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they hadn’t gotten enough sleep. 39 But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you’re strange and stay away from you. 40
So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. “One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and socially confident,” Walker said.
A.They are simply too tired to go out.
B.Too little sleep makes us get sick easily.
C.You may have trouble getting enough sleep.

Last April, Jake drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he went back home, Jake’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Jake approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Jake began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a rough mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Jake, driving a four-wheel truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Jake’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Jake was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Jake were a delivery worker named Paul and his friend Tom, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Jake’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Paul quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

The New York subway is one of the oldest public transportation systems in the world — it has been underneath this city for 110 years now, and I’ve been riding it for half that time. When I was a kid, there wasn’t any fear — only adventure. I would stand at the window of the front car and dream through the great network of tunnels, watching the red and green lights go by. A subway is like a secret, a child’s game. You go in one hole and you come out another. You move fast — much faster than a taxi, or walking or running. Years ago, a woman named Rosie Ruiz tried to steal a victory in the New York marathon by taking a subway to the finish line. Rosie was right. The subway was faster. I think what people like most about the subway, apart from basic transportation, still comes from the magic feeling of rushing around fast in a train underground.

32.推理判断题。根据第二段“In the last few years, the rates of vaccine-preventable illness have been on the rise. In most cases, these outbreaks began with children who were unvaccinated. To deal with this threat, some schools in New York have been refusing to allow unvaccinated children to attend school. Several parents thought this was unfair and filed lawsuits. Just recently, though, a court ruled in favor of the city schools.(在过去的几年里,疫苗可预防疾病的比率一直在上升。在大多数情况下,这些暴发始于未接种疫苗的儿童。为了应对这一威胁,纽约的一些学校已经拒绝让未接种疫苗的儿童上学。一些家长认为这是不公平的,并提出了诉讼。然而,就在最近,法院做出了有利于该市学校的裁决)”以及第三段中“The court made the right decision. Vaccine policy depends not only on the added protection that vaccines provide for those who get shots, but also on the decreased likelihood that anyone will come into contact with the disease.(法院做出了正确的决定。疫苗政策不仅取决于疫苗为接种者提供的额外保护,还取决于减少任何人接触疾病的可能性)”可推知,法官们考虑的是学生的利益。故选A。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“This is known as community immunity. It refers to the fact that when enough people are immunized, then there really can’t be an outbreak. And if there can’t be an outbreak, then everyone is protected.(这就是所谓的社区免疫。它指的是,当足够多的人接种了疫苗,就不会真的爆发疫情。如果没有爆发,那么所有人都受到了保护)”可知,通过“社区免疫”预防疾病暴发需要确保足够的人接种疫苗。故选C。
34.细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“The first thing noted in the paper was that death from chicken pox went down considerably after the vaccine was introduced. From 2001 through 2007, the rates of death remained much lower, with just a few children dying from chicken pox nationally each year.(论文中提到的第一件事是,水痘死亡人数在疫苗引入后大幅下降。从2001年到2007年,水痘死亡率一直较低,全国每年只有少数儿童死于水痘)”可知,水痘疫苗的研究表明疫苗降低了死亡率。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Therefore, people who refuse to vaccinate their children aren’t just putting themselves at risk — they’re putting everyone else in danger, too.(因此,拒绝给孩子接种疫苗的人不仅将自己置于危险之中,也将其他人置于危险之中)”可推知,B选项“没有疫苗就没有学校”的观点作者会认同。故选B。

67.Next, Paul turned to Tom and yelled, “Give me a rock!” With the rock in hand, he hit the window over and over , but in vain. He didn’t give up easily; instead, he balanced himself, leaned back and threw the rock at the window again with all his strength. Fortunately, this time he made it — the glass broke. To his relief, it didn’t hurt Jake, who reached out for Paul’s hand and was rescued. Without delay, the two men escaped and returned to safety.
Jake was about to thank Paul and Tom when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Jake took out the phone and answered it. “Are you home yet? Everything’s good?” His mother’s anxious voice came over. Tears welled up in his eyes on hearing the familiar voice of concern. Jake choked up as he explained what had happened. Hanging up the phone, he thanked Paul and Tom sincerely. Cold as the rain was, great warmth filled his heart like never before.
