I was at the beach in Costa Rica and I sat down and started to pick out the perfect shells to add to my shell collection. I could feel the cool breeze against my soft skin. My feet felt painful as I dipped them into the cool ocean water.
There was some noise going on in the background. A man and a boy were fighting. They were each holding surfboards: one was hazy yellow while the other was light blue. The man was muscular and had tattoos(纹身) snaking down both his arms. He was beating the boy, swearing, and speaking in his native language. Meanwhile, the boy looked as if he wanted to fight back or run, but didn’t do anything. Maybe because he knew he wasn’t strong enough to fight the man.
They were so disgusting that I turned my attention to my parents. I could see my dad was a bit ticked off by them. My mom was in the water, happily swimming in the shallows while my dad was standing knee-deep in the water enjoying the waves as they came surging. There was some argument between them about getting carried away by the swift current. There was some sand in my eyes so I rubbed them for about 10 seconds. When I opened them I saw my mom waving her arms way out in the ocean.
Wow! I never knew she was such a good swimmer. But slowly my expression changed as the truth dawned on me. My mom was drowning in the ocean. I started to panic—what if I lost my mom forever. I wanted to reverse time and do something that would not put her in this position. I felt helpless. I closed my eyes and pinched myself hoping that it was a dream. Of course, it was not.

There was an old, wise man who grew sicker by the day. However, his son was still young and had yet to reach his full potential. So the man decided to teach his son the ways of the world before death comes knocking.
One morning, the man handed his son a watch passed down for generations. The boy had never seen it before so he didn’t quite know what to make of it. “What am I supposed to do with this watch, father?” “I want you to take the watch to the jeweler (珠宝商). Show him the watch and ask him how much it’s worth. But don’t accept any offer. Instead, come back home with the watch.”
The boy did as his father had instructed, but only to be told it was only worth $100. He complained, “The jeweler said he was taking a gamble (赌注)on buying the watch and that he’d have a hard time finding a buyer. And if I’m being honest, I kind of agree with him. I don’t think this watch is anything special.” The father was nodding, seemingly in agreement with the jeweler’s assessment. “Okay,” the father said. “Now take the watch to the pawnshop (当铺). See how much you can get for the watch.”
In his mind, the boy disagreed. But he didn’t want to argue with his father so he did the job anyway. However, he still went home looking defeated. “Father, the best I got was $20. They told me that the watch had problems. There were scratches (刮痕) that even I didn’t notice after carrying it with me all day.” The father, yet again, nodded in agreement.
“So what do you want me to do? Should I go back to the jeweler? After all, he is willing to pay more money.” “No,” said the father. “I want you to go to the museum to talk to my friend. The lady will have a better idea of what this watch is really worth.”

Now that Emily was 12, she could walk to school without her parents. And even better, she could go with her best friend, Heidi, who lived on the same street as her.
The only problem was that Emily had to walk the long way round, which took them a good 15 minutes longer. She just could not take the shortcut through the park.
But Heidi never complained. They had been hanging out at each other’s houses for as long as they could remember. The best times were when they had sleepovers and could sit up late talking about anything and everything and everyone.
So if anyone understood why Emily could not walk through the park, it was Heidi.
Emily was a sweet girl except that she was frightened at dogs! So she had to avoid certain places where they might be. She was always conscious of where she went and got quite good at finding ways to avoid encountering any of them. She planned ahead good and proper before she headed outdoors or to a friend’s home. She could even spot one a mile away!
But the strange thing was, she didn’t dislike dogs. In fact she was quite fond of the idea of them. She was feeling that her fear was preventing her from living life to the full. She was starting to become tired of constantly avoiding her big fear. She wanted so badly to be able to pet a dog like “normal” people did. She tried to overcome her fear, but it usually ended in tears and a feeling of disappointment.
As her best friend, Heidi couldn’t stand by. She believed that power of friendship could help Emily overcome the fear.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks(裂纹)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realised she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a box of chocolates out of a drawer and gave him one.
The mother said, ”This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!“
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared.

When Gloria Estefan started primary school, she could not read, write nor speak English. She felt lost, unhappy and completely frightened. However, someone changed her life—her English teacher, Mrs Collins. Her family had left Cuba in 1959 when she was only a year old in the hope of finding a better life in America. Initially they moved to Miami where the family settled in a set of apartments with other Cuban women and children who had immigrated.
The women were close-knit and supportive. While she felt safe, she was also isolated. They all spoke Spanish, and she rarely heard English. On her very first day in school, which she was looking forward to, she was completely shocked. She came home and told her mother that she had learnt her first English word “stupid”. It was the nickname a boy had given her.
In every way possible, she was set apart from her classmates. She was the only panic and non-white student. She also found it difficult to grasp the English language as it was her second language. The culture, her school friends and the food they ate were different from hers. As such, she was set apart from her classmates.
One person made that year bearable for her, Mrs Collins. She was young and African American, so she understood how Gloria felt as she was the only non-white student in class. Mrs Collins never doubted that Gloria could catch up with the other students in time.
Still, the teasing continued. The boy who called her stupid would not stop laughing at her for her accent. He was a good student and the proud holder of the class’s reading award. It was an honour given periodically to a student, based on excellence in schoolwork, participation and homework. Gloria wanted that long-waited award.

I knew this dreaded day would come sooner or later. It came too fast and there I was, in the waiting room of the dental clinic, miserable with butterflies in my stomach.
My parents told me to sit up, stop wringing(拧) my hands, and take deep breaths to keep calm. It worked. I was calm for maybe two seconds when I heard my name being called. I pretended to be deaf but my mother touched me to get up. I forced myself to step forward and immediately stumbled (绊) over a toy and the boy who was playing with it. My clumsiness got me the attention of everyone in the room. Being stared at by so many pairs of eyes was too much and I hurried to the consultation room as fast as I could, leaving the boy crying for his broken toy.
I had refused my parents’ offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the treatment on my own. I regretted it right now. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a plate on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I avoided looking at my dentist in the eye as I took my seat on the chair shakily.
I tried to calm myself down, imaging how brave I would be. After a while, I was taken by great surprise when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light. When I caught sight of the dental drill on the plate, panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me.

Every afternoon I had to go to the store with my father, and the people there would give us things that were past the expiration date(有效期)but hadn't gone bad. Usually we received things like sliced vegetables, pieces of fruit, bread, and slices of cake or pie. We gave these to the homeless along with the sandwiches and tea.
My father and several volunteers from the church gathered every day in the park to feed the hungry. I was glad I didn't have to go to the feedings. It was enough trouble just getting everything ready. I really didn't understand why my father bothered with it. I couldn't wait for him to leave. I looked forward to a whole Saturday by myself. I planned to watch some television, talk with my friends on the phone, and maybe do some shopping during the afternoon.
It didn't take long for my plans to change and my happiness to disappear. Dad came in while I was finishing and stood behind me.
"I'm going to need your help today. Some of the others that usually help me won't be able to make it."
"Dad, I can't today," I complained. "I have plans, television, friends, shopping, and I was maybe going to go to the pool."
He just gave me the you-should-be-ashamed-of-yourself look.
"Fine." I had to give in. "It's not like I have a life."
I was really upset my day was now ruined. I finished packing the sandwiches and followed Dad out to the van. I wanted to cry. This was going to be the worst day ever. My dad always drove the church van, which also contained clothes and small bags filled with personal items as well as some chairs and a long table.
He pulled out of the driveway to head downtown. I looked out the window and watched as we drove past kids playing in their front yards. I felt like a prisoner forced to perform community service.

I didn’t see the thin plastic tape running across the bread bag when I put the bread in my shopping cart or when I checked out. It wasn’t until I unpacked the bread at home that I realized that I’d broken the rules again.
That stupid plastic tape joined the long list of mistakes I made in just one week of trying to eat plastic-free. Last month, I challenged myself to purchase a week’s worth of food without bringing home any plastic. That meant no yogurt containers or plastic packages.
I chose a budget of $115 (roughly half-way between the average weekly grocery bill for a family of two in Massachusetts). On Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot of a well-known zero-waste shopping center.
I started in the produce section, where I typically got a plastic bag of organic baby carrots. This time, I could not go there because every vegetable in the organic section was packed in plastic containers. But I found some beautiful carrots among the non-organic produce. Then I saw the plastic price labels hanging off their rubber bands. I rolled my cart past the green beans and grapes, all inside the plastic. I weighed loose apples, onions and sweet potatoes. My anxiety kicked in — a feeling that I wouldn’t have enough. So, I bought a head of cabbage.
I tapped prices into the calculator on my phone. Leaving the produce section, I was in good shape, at $32. It was time to search for protein.
I headed to the meat counter. Again, everything was prepackaged in plastic. But the man behind the glass kindly agreed to put some chicken and meat, separately, in paper bags. Together they were $21.
Tofu, cheese, yogurt and pretty much everything in the dairy section were prepackaged in plastic. Even the bottled milk had a plastic cap. But there were lots of eggs in those paper bags.

It was a bright spring afternoon along the coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51 and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which crosses the shallow waters of the bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the loud noise of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck was skidding (打滑) from one lane to the other. To Bauer’s horror, it crashed into a concrete barrier, spun like a top, flipped over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but a BMW car that had hit into the guardrail on the right, came sliding backward towards him. He turned left, but too late — the BMW struck his car’s fender (保险杠) before crashing into the vehicle behind him.
Bauer stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.
He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too shocked to speak.
And then a shout. It came from the pickup truck, which had come to rest on its right side. The back passenger compartment (车厢隔间) and truck bed were hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door was open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then storming to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. The man pointed down. In the water was a car seat. Next to it, a girl, about two years old, was terrified, floating on her back, and screaming.
From around the truck, its other passengers who had gotten clear of the compartment were looking down into the water.
Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup truck driver to do something, but he didn’t. Maybe he was in shock.

    10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Aware of my mom’s situation, the man began surfing towards her. Once reaching her, he scooped up her with his arm and was inching slowly towards the shore against the swift current. My heart was beating so fast even though I had been sitting there the whole time. I had to take several moments to catch my breath. My mother was saved. It was the man I hated first who saved my mother.
Just a few minutes ago, this guy was being disgusting and loud. But now here he was standing as a hero. Before I could say thanks to him, he was already gone. I didn’t even know his name. A mixture of gratitude and shame surged through me. How I wish I had thanked him or at least smiled. And I will never forget those 30 seconds of my life that are seared into my mind and neither will I forget the man who saved my mom.

The son, getting annoyed by going once again, unwillingly agreed. After talking to the lady, the son tore off down the street to tell his father the good news. The father, smiling widely, asked how much the watch was. The son cried with tears of joy, saying $35,000! With that much money the son could really enjoy life. However, the father shook his head this time. “I’m glad for you, son. You can do what you want with that watch after I’m dead. But what is more important for you is value and self-worth.”
Confused, “What do you mean by saying value and self-worth?” the son asked his father. With patience the father continued and explained, “Just like that watch, you too have value. You’ll never know your self-worth in the wrong places, but there’s always a place you can go to where everyone will see your real value.” Upon hearing his father’s explanation, the son had a newfound respect for his father as well as for his self-worth and his life. His father’s words were far more valuable than the watch he spent all day getting rated.

Heidi had been very supportive to her and she realised she couldn’t lose her best friend.
After several restless nights, Emily went to Heidi’s house and rang the bell. The first thing she heard was a little dog’s cry. She shuddered. Even though she could tell from the sound that it was only a tiny little thing that made it, it didn’t help. She felt a familiar foreboding. Soon she was facing her fear! Heidi’s dad opened the door. Heidi’s dog was about ten inches long. Now he tried to come near enough to greet her. She cautiously pet the little wriggling bag of fluff for at least ten seconds. It wasn’t long. The mother said, ”This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat! “Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. ”This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase. “She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possession. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself with more chocolates for other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as he was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.
Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. His palm and forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. ”I’m sorry I lied to you, Mum. Please take back the chocolates.“ Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn’t hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolates. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole box of chocolates in his hand, smiling. ”Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear."

Mrs Collins encouraged her to compete for the reading award. With this kind teacher cheering her on, she gained confidence and language skills. She made so rapid progress that by mid-year, she was well on her way to speaking English fluently and had a good grasp of reading. Besides, she did well in all the other subjects. She came to school early every day, participated actively in class activities and finished homework on time. What’s more, she made more and more friends in her class.
The award ceremony was coming up. She worked as hard as she could. When Mrs Collins announced Gloria as the winner in front of the whole class, it was her proudest moment. She immediately took the reading award right out of that boy’s hot little hands. The boy was shocked and unwillingly handed it to her. She felt so happy for herself, owing her success to her teacher, Mrs Collins. This served as a motivation for Gloria who worked even harder in school and earned more “A” grades.

I felt embarrassed and ashamed for my rude behavior and explained the bad experience in the past to the dentist. After hearing my story, the dentist smiled and encouraged me to forget the past and face the challenge bravely. I felt eased with the dentist’s comfort and care. Everything was going smoothly and I was grateful to the dentist.
My parents were waiting at the door anxiously when I ran out excitedly. I knew they would find it hard to believe what just happened. I was about to describe the process of treatment when I saw the boy whose toy I just broke. I went up to the boy and his parents and apologized for my misbehavior. All the people sang high praise for my honesty. After that, I followed my parents to the exit to tell them the most proud experience I ever had.

7.When we arrived at the park, people were already gathered under a tree waiting for us. I couldn’t believe how many people were there, and all of them were homeless. I was surprised to learn my dad knew most of them by name. He also seemed to know what each one needed and what they had suffered to land them on the street. One old man called Adonis told me if it hadn’t been for my father he didn’t think he would have found Jesus. When everyone was gone, we loaded things back into the van.
Seeing their smiles, I understood why my father did so much to help them. Now I understood why my father did so much to help the homeless. I could tell he loved seeing their smiles of happiness. I did too. That day with my dad taught me that there will always be someone smarter, prettier, or richer than me, and there will also always be someone less fortunate. The difference is in the individual willing to take the opportunity to help others, even if it means sacrificing something of their own.

    8. So I became a little bit angry and complained to the manager that there were too many things I couldn’t buy plastic-free. There was no dairy or juice. He said he’s interested in using more recyclable containers, but they were much more expensive. He also told me that it’s hard to add that cost to the price of food, and that paper bags for nuts, beans or snacks weren’t as attractive on shelves as plastic bags.
At the moment, I realized that perhaps I shouldn’t have had aimed too high. After all, most customers had to shop with their eyes on their wallets. The major plastic producers could not be closed down immediately. Thus, I decided to just reduce the plastic that I used once and threw away. Anyway, I was happy that I avoided using 27 plastic containers in the week. Maybe I could do better.

Worried about the safety of the girl with eager eyes, he ultimately had the idea of climbing from the railing into the water. A moment later, he landed below the bridge. Scarcely had Bauer bounced off the sandy bottom safely when he could do nothing but rush to the girl.
When the little girl was less than 10 feet away, Bauer swam to her quickly. Soon Bauer reached the girl, and without hesitation he lifted her out of the water. After accessing her condition and feeling her heart rate slowly return to normal, Bauer judged the baby was unhurt and he breathed a sigh of relief. Now, the baby started coughing up a lot of water. He patted her on the back for about five minutes until a boat pulled up and saved Bauer and the little girl aboard. Inspired by that action, Ava intended to give a hand whenever and wherever.

    10.Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Its abrupt appearance scared my horse, making it run off the track wildly. I spared no efforts to hold on as hard as I could and my dad was trying to keep up, extremely worried about my safety. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath. Relieved, we looked around trying to find the track. However, it was nowhere to be found. So aimlessly did the frightened horse run that we got lost unconsciously.
    Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Nothing in sight was familiar and neither did we know where the farm house was. Just at the point of desperation, from the distance came a faint voice. “It must be Uncle Paul,” I exclaimed excitedly. That we didn’t come back for dinner made him realize something unusual might have happened. So my uncle went out to look for us. Finally, we reached our uncle’s farm house safe and sound.
