Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today—a lesson about the value of efforts.
My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids owned, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what so-and-so got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.” We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced.
It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window—white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers: The basket winked at me and I knew—I had to have it.
“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it? I’ll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I have earned enough, it’ll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.

It was 7:15 a. m. on Monday, and Frank, an engineer, was on his morning run along the East River. Suddenly, something caught his eyes-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high railing (栏杆) that guarded the path from the water. Curious and confused, Frank stopped to get closer to the scene, only to find the man took a step forward and dropped into the dark river below.
When Frank reached the railing, the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. He screamed desperately for help as the current pulled him away from the bank.
By now, a crowd had gathered on land. People had called the police, but it was unclear when they’d get there. Without hesitation, dropping his phone and keys on land, Frank jumped in. Just as the old man was losing strength, Frank grabbed hold of him. Unexpectedly, the strong wind forced the water to tear them apart again.
Having seen what had happened, another two joggers made a quick response. They dived from where they stood into the river, and swam towards the pair, who were about 30 yards from the seawall. Immediately they caught up to the old man. The three stabilized him, with one supporting his back and the other two holding him up from either side. However, the old man was unresponsive, but not unconscious. As the men made their way towards the seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Frank had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wall and no ladder or dock in sight, there was no way out of the river. ”A rescue boat is on its way, “ someone yelled to them. The old man, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in his rescuers’ arms, which meant they could only use their legs to save themselves. They were almost out of energy at that point.

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting. and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there.”
“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowden, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I'm glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaica. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere.” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes. Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up and seemed to understand what Miss Snowden meant.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2022. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U. S. - Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he could pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. A hand-drawn bow(蝴蝶结)accompanied the word. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected(猜想)that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind, direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes. and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2022, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To. his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself very quickly. He wanted to be first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. “You do not belong to this country?” said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak the English language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in a very difficult situation and required some help.

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said. “It’s okay, just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give it a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. She was laughed at by others. Embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said “Emily, coward (胆小鬼) Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly. “Well, my poor girl. Don’t cry.” Tell me what happened to you, asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face in her hands and said. “It doesn’t matter, my girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”

I was filled with envy when I saw my friend’s new Disney watch. That’s what I wanted for Christmas.
“You’re not old enough for a watch yet.” My mother’s voice revealed no argument. “What else would you like for Christmas?”
I hung my head. “Nothing.” I dragged my feet as I walked away. Looking back, I realize my parents had no money to waste on something I would likely lose. However, I still wanted that watch.
When presents began gathering under the tree, none matched the size and shape of a jewelry box that might contain a watch. However, one with my name on it did raise my curiosity. Mama had wrapped it well with thick paper, and the few times I could sneak(溜)to the back of the tree to check it out failed to give me any clues about its identity. My curiosity grew. Christmas seemed so far away.
One day, I could no longer stand it. While Mama cooked dinner, I pulled my four-year-old sister Shelly into the living room and pointed to the mystery gift. “Do you know what that is?”
    Shelly nodded.
    “What is it?”
“Mama told me not to tell you,” she said.
I put my arm around her and used my best conspiratorial(阴谋的)voice. “Let’s make a deal. I’ll tell you what I got you for Christmas if you tell me what’s in that present.”
    Shelly brightened. “Okay. Watch.”
I watched her. Nothing happened. “So what’s in the present?”
    “Watch.”
I frowned(皱眉头)for a moment and then comprehension dawned. “You mean a watch? They got me a watch for Christmas?”
    She smiled and nodded.
As I told her I bought her a coloring book, I was still doubtful about her words.
The big day came, and I headed straight for that gift. When I tore off the paper, I did find a beautiful Cinderella watch with a pink band. I was so excited. “You got me the watch! Shelly told me you had, but I didn’t believe her.”

Mr. Tai, the teacher in charge of athletics at SUKK Temarah, had just celebrated his 58th birthday — an age at which many would think seriously of retiring. However, it was not so with Mr. Tai. He had an outstanding record of athletic achievements in leading the school’s sports team. Some of the students he had coached had become national runners or even coaches themselves. The school board agreed he continued to work as they did not want to lose the services of someone who had successfully led the school athletics team to the finals of the National Athletics Championships.
In the year before, however, the school team did not get as many medals in the National Athletics Championships as expected. Mr. Tai’s hopes were fired this year by two promising star athletics, Farid and Hassan, who happened to be twins.
In the school’s sports meet, Farid broke the school’s twenty-year record for the 100 metres event. His brother, Hassan, was just a second behind. Since Hassan had an ankle injury, Mr. Tai decided to submit only Farid’s name to the finals of the National Athletics Championships. On the day he submitted the results of the best runner in the school, he mistakenly wrote Hassan’s name instead.
When Mr. Tai received the list of the finalists in the 100 metres event in the National Athletics Championships, he realized his mistake. However, it was too late to inform the sports secretariat (秘书处). Besides, pride also did not allow him to admit his mistake to Farid. He decided to inform his brother, Hassan, and start training him in the final preparations for this event. When Farid learned that he was not a finalist, he could not believe his ears. Even though he was glad that his brother had qualified, he was quite disappointed. To make matters worse, Mr. Tai did not give him any reasons for his not being allowed to take part in the finals. Realizing that his hopes for athletic glory were destroyed, Farid felt extremely sad.

Jeremy was not expected to live after the accident. His car was completely destroyed when a drunk driver did not stop at the red light. The car hit Jeremy’s side of the car and pushed it into a tree. Many months later Jeremy still had trouble remembering his family. Many things about his past were gone. He had a noticeable limp when he walked.
His parents had flown in from Madison to be with him during his treatment in Chicago. Now he was leaving the hospital and he regained most of his memory. The doctors were amazed that he had survived, much less, that he would be walking out of the hospital. The staff of the hospital were all there to cheer him on to his life outside of the hospital. While he still had a lot of tough work to do with his recovery, the doctors were optimistic that he would regain his physical abilities.
Jeremy had played football at his high school. Many universities had expressed interest in having him come to play at their schools, but now because of the accident, that dream was over.
When Jeremy arrived home late, he went straight into his room, which was familiar but felt strange. On the wall was a big school football team picture, in which the coach and the team players were laughing happily. Looking at the picture and the awards on his desk he asked his parents, “Am I going to get better? I hate being like this,” Jeremy cried in his mother’s arms. His mother held him close, tears dropping from her eyes.
The next day, early morning rays of sunlight were crossing the window and falling on Jeremy’s face. He opened his eyes and stared at the picture and felt better. He was determined to get his old life back.

Joel’s grandmother is looking after him at the hospital. He will be fine,” his mother assured him.
Meanwhile, Liam missed his best friend at school and wished he would join him at school soon. Since Joel was his only friend and other students didn’t like talking to him, he spent most of the time in school alone.
Fifteen days later, Joel returned home and Liam couldn’t wait to see his friend. Liam rushed to Joel’s house with a candy bar and the ball they used to play catch with. 1.    “I’ll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,” Mom explained. I agreed immediately and Mom bought the flowery basket and kept it somewhere I could’t find. Each day, I finished my new routine of double household chores with passion and enthusiasm. Each night, I crossed off another day on the calender as I counted down the days. As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. The extra chores didn’t bother me. The basket was worth it. The anticipation grew stronger as the days ticked down.
Finally, I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others’ bikes! So shocked and upset was I that I immediately went home to report this disaster to my Mom. Seeing my sad face, she gently wiped away my tears. Holding my little face in her warmth hands, she spoke out what has become the lesson I still carry with me today. “Your basket is not the same basket. It’s unique because it was obtained by all your worthwhile effort and waiting.”

    2.     Then appeared a rescue boat with a pole attached to it. Frank supported the back of the old man whom the other two pushed upward the boat with great efforts. At the same time, someone on the boat pulled the old man up, making it in the end. Then, the three in the water grasped the pole on the boat, with which they climbed aboard, to safety. The three men sat on the boat, looking pale and exhausted, out of breath. Within ten minutes, the group was back on land.
The old man was rushed to hospital. Luckily, the details on his condition proved there was nothing wrong with him and he recovered in a short time. “Thank you for saving my life,” he said, showing his sincere gratitude to Frank and the two men, who left the hospital in relief after ensuring the old man was safe. Frank returned to work, obviously late. “I was a bit late, but I had a good excuse. It is worth enough,” he thought.

Miss Snowden smiled and encouraged him, “An apology never comes late.” Jeremy raised his eyebrows and said in a low voice, “I shouldn’t have said that. Sorry.” Tamika looked down at her skates, wiped her tears and murmured, “Actually, that’s OK. It’s my skates”, spinning the loose wheel.
“I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Grabbing her skates, Jeremy tightened the screws in no time. He looked up brightly and handed the skates to Tamika. Tamika tried her skates and surprisingly they were working well. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks”. Jeremy felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time. You know, I didn’t go anywhere either this summer.” he said. Then they three looked at each other and burst into laughter. Truly, they did not have to travel far to learn anything new.
