It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting. and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there.”
“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowden, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I'm glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaica. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere.” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes. Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up and seemed to understand what Miss Snowden meant.

I look at spiders and butterflies. I watch caterpillars (毛毛虫) and moths (飞蛾). Sometimes I think I’m the only one who notices these things. But if it hadn’t been for a crowded cafeteria, I wouldn’t have ever noticed Valeri. After all, I wasn’t looking for new friends.
Valeri was a new student. She walked to class with her books huddled against her chest and her head down. She talked only when the teacher asked her a question. After a month at our school, she hadn’t made any friend. If you asked who she was, you’d get a response like this, “She’s in my PE class, I can’t remember her name.”
One day at lunch, I had nowhere to sit. Most tables were full, my friends scattered among them. But Valeri sat alone, book in hand, I walked over to her.
“May I sit here?” I asked.
“Sure,” she said.
The cafeteria was noisy, but silence hung between us. Valeri didn’t seem to mind, but it drove me crazy. I searched my mind for things to say.
“So,” I said, “is that a good book?” Valeri gave me a small nod and went back to reading. “What’s it about?” I asked, after several more annoying seconds of silence. She looked at me, her eyes sparkling.
“Well, it’s called Eragon, and it’s about a dragon! This boy, Eragon, finds this dragon egg when he goes hunting one day. He thinks it’s a rock! The egg hatches and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big.
“That sounds cool,” I said. I was about to ask her another question, but the bell rang.
“See you later.
“Yeah,” she said, “see you later.”
A couple of days later, I spotted Valeri looking for a place to sit at lunch.
“Valeri, come here.” I pointed to an empty chair.
She sat down and pulled out her book. Everyone was talking about next week’s talent show in the auditorium (会堂). “So, what are you going to do for the show?” My friend Erin asked my friend Kelly.
“Oh, I don’t know, probably nothing,” Kelly sighed. “What are you doing?” She pointed to Valeri.
“Oh.” Valeri put her book down. “I don’t know. Maybe something special for the show.”
The week flew by before I knew it.

Good Neighbours
After school one winter day, Jack asked his mother to allow him to go out and play in the snow. “Sure, you can. Remember to put on your coat and your hat and your gloves,” his mother said. “You can build a snowman before your father comes home.”
“I’m going to need a carrot for the nose,” Jack said. “And I’ll need some things for the snowman’s hat and face.” Jack got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. His mother promised she would watch him build the snowman from the window.
Outside, in his front yard, Jack started with a very small ball of snow. He got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball. At another window, someone else was watching Jack play. It was his new neighbour Naoko. Naoko asked her mother if she could go outside and join Jack in building his snowman. Naoko’s mother agreed and promised to watch her from the window. “You can play until your father comes home,” her mother said.
Naoko ran outside to Jack’s yard and asked if she could help him finish his snowman.
“Yes, please help me,” Jack said. “I have built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for my snowman’s head.”
“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Naoko said.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack said. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.”
Jack picked up some snow and made it into a small snowball. He got on his knees and rolled the snow away from Naoko to make the snowman’s head. Naoko walked back into her own yard and began to build her own snowman.
Jack made a hat for his snowman with his bucket (桶). He used his mother’s sewing (缝) buttons for the eyes and mouth. Lastly, he added a carrot for the snowman’s nose. Seeing his snowman, Jack was happy when suddenly a terrible thing happened. The head fell off the snowman and crashed to the ground! “Oh, no! My snowman fell apart,” Jack said, “and my father is almost home!”

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Huron, Ohio, was where I’d spent my twenties, working on a ship out on the Great Lakes. My wife and I started our family there, and later we came back to Huron to retire. Then, during the final stages of construction on our new home, I had difficulty breathing. The doctor determined I needed an open-heart operation. I was admitted to a hospital in Sandusky.
The night before my operation, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep. I lay in my hospital bed, praying (祈祷) and thinking about the events in my life. I remembered how I had loved Huron and its people. I remembered a Christmas many years ago...
The shipping season had been good to me, so that winter I decided to buy some Christmas gifts and help out a family in town. “I know a family that would appreciate a visit from Santa Claus,” the owner of store said. “A woman with six children just lost her husband.”
The store owner and his wife helped me wrap (包) some presents and gave me the family’s address. That evening I delivered the packages. A little girl with shining brown eyes and the sweetest smile answered the door. “Santa asked me to bring these gifts to you and your family,” I said.
The girl’s eyes lit up even more. “Tell Santa thank you from Dorothy,” she said. I never saw her or her family again, but they, and the other folks I met in town, helped give Huron a lifelong place in my heart. A heart that now needed fixing, badly.

My baby Reese started screaming as we watched my eight-year-old kick and hit while he was tested for his longing-for black belt. I struggled to hold him in my arms as we pushed our way through the crowd to the side of the taekwondo (跆拳道) studio.
I looked up, and that’s when I saw it. There was a woman on a flyer with a bright white smile surrounded by her daughters. “OUR MOM NEEDS A KIDNEY (肾脏),” it said above the photo. “My name is Vonchelle Knight, and I have kidney disease. I am a single mother of two girls and have been on the transplant waitlist for eight years,” it said below.
As I continued to read, I was attracted. My eyes couldn’t get to the next word fast enough. My eyes were filled with tears as I thought about how desperately this mother needed a kidney. And that’s when I felt deep in my gut, “It’s me. I’m going to be her donor.” In the middle of that busy taekwondo studio, I was called on to donate my kidney to a woman whom I had never met.
The drive home was not a typical Saturday kind of drive home. I trembled at the thought of speaking aloud what I was so convinced of just moments before. I glanced over at my husband who was driving.
“Hey, babe?” I asked nervously. “I need to tell you something.”
He looked at me, unsure and a little afraid of what might come out of my mouth next. After all, I do like to keep him on his toes. “Yeah, what is it?” he asked intently.
“I think I want to donate my kidney to a stranger.”
I thought he might drive right off the road. By the look on his face, he clearly thought I had lost my mind, I was a busy mom of two boys, working a full-time job as a sales account manage.

Last year during the year-end holidays, I had an opportunity to participate in a Youth Camp organized by the Boy Scouts Association of my school. Since it was the first camp that I had ever taken part in, I really looked forward to it.
The camp was located in a field by a river. It was on the first day of the camp that I met Leo. He had the body size of a bear. During the lunch hour, all the campers queued up (排队) to get their food. After getting my share, I was looking for a suitable spot to sit down and enjoy my lunch when Le or an into me, spilling (洒) soup on me. Instead of apologizing, Leo laughed at me. “Don’t you think you should apologize to me, clumsy (笨拙的) bear?” It old him off as I was really annoyed.
“Apologize? It was only a minor accident. By the way, how could you call me a clumsy bear?” Leo said.
I ignored him.
On the second day, Leo was late for roll call. As a consequence, he was punished and had to do push-ups.
“It serves you right. You should have apologized to me,” I told Leo after roll call.
In the afternoon, all of the campers went canoeing (划艇) on the river. As it was my first experience, I rolled my canoe over. Leo laughed at me loudly, remarking what a terrible canoeist I was. Very much embarrassed and angry, I swam towards his canoe. Fortunately, some other campers managed to hold me back before I did something I’d regret. We went jungle exploring on the afternoon of the third day. While carrying out the activity, I injured my ankle accidentally and got left behind. Though the pain was terrible, I kept walking since I did not want to be left too far behind. While I was crossing a narrow bridge, I lost my balance and fell down into a ditch (沟). Due to my foot injury and the depth of the ditch, I faced a lot of difficulty getting out.

A Surprise for Grandfather
From high up in his apartment building, Peter could see the canal stretching in both directions. Every Saturday, Peter watched for grandfather riding toward the building on his bicycle. But today, Peter knew that his grandfather wouldn’t come and he would not hear the ring-ring of grandfather’s bicycle bell. What’s worse, there would be no Saturday afternoon picnic in the park.
Last week, his grandfather had hip surgery (髋部手术). Now he rested at home needing a walking stick to walk-and Peter didn’t know if grandfather would ever ride his bike again. Peter sighed. The sky looked beautiful today, but Peter missed his grandfather. Would he ever again hear the ring-ring as grandfather approached? That’s when Peter had an idea. He grabbed his birthday money-10 euros-from the top dresser drawer. Then he hurried to tell mom his plan.
A few minutes later, Peter ran down the stairs of his building and burst into the afternoon sunshine. His bike was waiting for him. Peter fastened his helmet and pedaled down (踩踏板) the rough road.
Ring-ring sang his bicycle bell to alert walkers that he was coming.
He pedaled past the corner bicycle accessories (配件) shop. He pedaled past the window washer who whistled as he worked. And he pedaled over a bridge.
“Hello,” he called to a girl fishing in the canal.
“Hello,” he called to a baby in a stroller.
Peter pedaled two more blocks and then arrived at the. market. He loved the market’s sights and smells. Buckets were filled with bright bouquets of tulips. Tables were full of rounds of cheese. Colorful vegetables were piled high-red tomatoes, white asparagus, orange carrots, green lettuce, purple potatoes, and yellow peppers. And Peter’s favorite-baskets overflowed with freshly baked breads, rolls, and pastries. He inhaled the smell, and his mouth watered.
Peter’s euros jingled in his pocket as he walked through the market, examining each table. He stopped at a fruit stand and chose two shiny apples. “Thank you,” Peter said to the farmer and handed him one euro. He stopped at the cheese table and asked for half a pound of cheese. ”Thank you,” Peter said to the cheesemaker, handing him three euros. Finally, he stopped in front of the bread baskets and chose a crusty oblong loaf (大面包).“Thank you,”he said to the baker, handing him two euros. Peter placed the items in his bicycle basket and pedaled back.
Ring-ring sang his bicycle bell to alert walkers that he was coming.

“Never give up! Never give up!” chanted(吟唱)my two young children, Max and Charley, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mimi. My mom Mimi was leading Max and Charley on another adventure, straight off the beach where they’d spent the day building sand castles and playing in the waves. This time, they were seeking an ice-cream truck.
Over the years, Mimi had become our family’s tower of positivity. It wasn’t a title she earned without effort, however. Having been a single mother at only forty years old and left to raise me and my ten-year-old brother alone, she faced countless challenges. She had been the one who had to make the decision to remove our dad from life support fourteen days after he was in a car accident.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the high mountaintop in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking beauty or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leading by example, Mom taught us just how much one could accomplish with a positive attitude.
She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren. Before starting her adventure with Max and Charley on that hot July afternoon, Mimi heard the familiar clang(叮当声)of the ice-cream man's bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his shining green shirt and catching the gleam(闪光)of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared. Happily, the ice-cream man’s visit was a daily occurrence on the beach, although the time between the sound of his bell and the departure of his truck wasn’t long. One must be quick to catch him.
Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch him in time that day. Mimi smiled and said, “Never give up!” She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could hurry off to find it at its next stop.

One day my mother and I were out having a girls’ day, and we decided to go to a seafood restaurant. We got there just as the lunch rush started, so there was a line to get in. I looked over to the side and spied a very thin lady with no coat and a chemo shunt (化疗分流器) in her arm. She was holding a sign that rend: “Homeless and hungry. Please help.”
I looked around at everyone, and no one looked like they cared in the least. I knew that if I didn’t do something. I will be regretful forever. I went over to her and asked if she would like to come out of the cold and get something to eat. She looked for a second like she was unsure I was talking to her. She put her head down and said in the lowest voice, “Yes.”
I helped her to her feet and walked her up to my mother, who was in line. We stood there together until we were seated. When the waitress came, she asked what we wanted to eat but completely ignored this woman and acted like she didn’t exist.
Then the owner came over and asked if we wanted this woman to sit at our table. I assured her we did. She then asked what her name was, to which I replied that we hadn’t gotten to ask that yet.
Then she said something that put me over the top. She said, “Well, you did right by getting her food instead of giving her money.”
This was the last straw for my mother and me. I talked loud enough for everyone to hear when I told her, “This woman is sitting right here. She is not invisible, and she is not deaf. She is just as good as anyone in here, and I will not allow her to be treated any differently than any other customer in here.”

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成篇完整的短文。
I was looking forward to my son Scott’s visit and our morning trip to the Collingwood Flea Market. It was a typical November day, cold in the shade and warm in the sun. A perfect day for outdoor shopping.
We walked up and down looking at the many things, but nothing called out to me. After an hour of walking with the wind blowing in the air, we decided to call it quits and go home for lunch.
On our way, I was rubbing my cold hands together when I noticed that my engagement ring was missing. When I informed Scott of the missing ring he couldn’t believe it either. We searched the car and I searched my clothes, too. No ring! It must have fallen off my finger in the cold.
We headed back to the flea market and parked in the same spot as before. We checked that area, and then began walking up and down the maze of tables while looking at the ground. Leaves blew in the wind and people were everywhere. Hundreds of feet passed by and I began getting lightheaded as I intently looked at the ground, I was afraid of the thought of someone finding my ring and wearing it home, not knowing the emotional value and its history. It was an expensive engagement ring my now dead partner had given me twenty years earlier. I had never lost or misplaced it in all that time... until now.
We gave up, cold and hungry. I was angry at myself for having lost the ring. We drove home as I tried to hold back my tears.
After lunch, which I had no appetite for, we decided to return to the flea market. If we were going to find it, it was now or never. Time was of the importance. And so, for the third time we parked the car in the same spot. Because it was later in the day, most of the vendors had packed up and left.

1.范文
At this moment, Jeremy was walking by and saw them. Noticing Tamika’s teary eyes, Jeremy swallowed what he’d intended to say. A sense of guilt seized him and he stood there, frozen. Miss Snowden smiled and encouraged him, “An apology never comes late.” Jeremy raised his eyebrows and said in a low voice, “I shouldn’t have said that. Sorry.” Tamika looked down at her skates, wiped her tears and murmured, “Actually, that’s OK. It’s my skates”, spinning the loose wheel.
“I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Grabbing her skates, Jeremy tightened the screws in no time. He looked up brightly and handed the skates to Tamika. Tamika tried her skates and surprisingly they were working well. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks”. Jeremy felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time. You know, I didn’t go anywhere either this summer.” he said. Then they three looked at each other and burst into laughter. Truly, they did not have to travel far to learn anything new.

A nurse came into check on me. “Will you pray with me?” I asked. She took my hand and held it until our prayer was finished. “Where are you from?” the nurse asked. “I’m from Huron,” I told her proudly. She smiled. “I grew up there,” she said. “I loved it, even though life wasn’t easy. You see, I lost my father when I was just a child.” I looked into her sparkly brown eyes and knew I’d seen them before. “Do you recall a sailor bringing presents to your door one Christmas.” She stared. “That was you!”
“Yes, Dorothy,” I said, suddenly confident about my operation. “That was me.” Again, she held my hand and told me that those gifts had made their day. I could feel the warmth of her hands. She continued that when she grew up, she understood that it was not Santa Claus, but a kind stranger who illuminated their lives. Since then, she had been silently praying for the stranger and hoping that she could also help others. Before leaving she said “You have always been my role model.” Hearing her words, I believed my operation would be a success.

5.My husband stood firm against my ridiculous (荒谬的) idea. He thought donating a kidney would do me a lot of harm and I would be very weak. And there was a lot of surgical risk. Besides, I was a busy mother of two boys and worked full-time as a sales account manager. So our children needed a healthy mother, and our family also needed me. That’s why he adamantly opposed my decision to donate a kidney. But, I thought of Vonchelle Knight, who was a single mother of two girls and had been on the transplant waitlist for eight years. She really needed a kidney to save her life, and their children really needed a mother. When I told my husband the Vonchelle Knight’s story, he was in a quandary of silence.
I decided to donate my kidney to Vonchelle and persuaded my husband. I found Vonchelle Knight’s contact information on the flyer and informed her of my intention to donate. Vonchelle Knight was very grateful and kept saying thank you. Later, we contacted the transplant hospital. Before donation, we did a very comprehensive and meticulous examination, including the match, the heart and lung function, liver and kidney function, blood system function, and metabolic disease examination. The tests went well, and we carried out the transplant. The operation was very successful and we had no adverse reactions. Two months later, we were both well enough to leave the hospital. Since then, our two families had been inseparable. I also felt incredibly proud that I was able to save a life and a family.

Mimi bent over and patted him gently on the shoulder. Smiling, she comforted the boy, “Max, remember: winners never quit, and quitters never win”. “Yeah! Never give up!” Lily agreed. Max looked up, thought for a while and jumped to his feet. “You are right. Let’s hurry!” And so they marched on.
Just two blocks later, they found it. The ice-cream truck was parked just around the corner, shining brilliantly in the sunlight, as if waiting to reward the three adventurers with a most generous treat for their patience and determination. “Finally!” Max cried at this sight, throwing a fist in the air, while Lily screamed with excitement. We went to the manager’s office and told him my sad story. I left my name and phone number hoping that someone would find the ring and turn it in. After that, I took a deep breath and we set out on our mission. It was much warmer and not as windy. I took the left side of the paths and Scott the right. We walked and walked and walked. There was broken glass that shone like a diamond ring. There were shiny soda can tabs that caught our eye. There were silver coins.
Finally, we reached the far end of the flea market. There were a number of empty tables because the vendors had already packed up and left. And there, under one of those tables, I spotted a shiny little circle in the dirt. I shouted to Scott that I had found the ring! He said it was unbelievable! Yes, it was truly a miracle. Three hours after I lost it, with hundreds of people walking by, my ring waited for the person meant to find it... me!
