How To Spend a Trillion Dollars
    ¥122. 00
    Availability: In Stock
    Hardback ︱ 320 pages ︱ Published 14/01/2021
    DESCRIPTION
If you had a trillion (万亿) dollars and a year to spend it for the advancement of science, what would you do?
It’s an unimaginably large sum, yet it’s only around one per cent of, and about the valuation of Google, Microsoft or Amazon. You could solve the problem of the pandemic, for one, and get rid of malaria, and maybe cure all kinds of disease. You could end global poverty, offering enough food for human beings in the world. You could settle on the Moon and explore the solar system. You could build quantum computers, develop artificial intelligence, or increase human lifespan. You could even create a new life form.
Award winning writer Rowan Hooper is a senior editor at New Scientist and the host of the New Scientist Weekly podcast. How to Spend a Trillion Dollars is the eventual thought experiment but it is also a call to arms: these are all things we could do, if we put our minds to it and our money as well.
“In a world in which everything seems to be going wrong, this is a refreshingly optimistic book about what real solutions to the world’s biggest problems could look like — and the amount of money needed. Beautifully positive, clear and easily understood”. — Angela Saini, author of Superior

After moving to a new town, Anthony decided rescuing a dog would be the perfect way to make himself fit to his place. He found a dog named Reggie, but, sadly, the two of them didn’t hit it off. Anthony was about to bring Reggie back to the shelter, hoping he’d find happiness with another family. Then, he remembered a letter that stopped him in his tracks.
At first, Anthony hesitated to open the letter. But, in the end, curiosity got the best of him. Before he broke the seal of the envelope, Anthony noticed some change in Reggie’s behavior. The dog seemed to cheer up at the sight of the letter. Almost as though he was waiting for Anthony to find it and open it.
The letter told Anthony what Reggie was trained to do and how he loved playing fetch with tennis balls. As Anthony kept reading, he was shocked to learn that Reggie’s name wasn’t actually Reggie. It was no wonder the poor dog wasn’t responding to him!
Anthony learned that Reggie’s real name was actually Tank. A strange name, at least in Anthony’s mind. But he’d soon realize the term “tank” held a lot of meaning for the previous owner who operated tanks. In his letter, he said that in case he died, he wanted the dog to have a new owner. Sadly, its owner died later.
The Army followed through with his wishes, calling the local shelter and giving them instructions to find the dog a loving family to go home with. After passing on a few families, the shelter finally met Anthony.
After finishing the letter, Anthony folded it up and put it back in the box. According to him, he looked at “Reggie” and whispered the name Tank. Immediately, the dog shook his head, his tail moving around, and his eyes softening.
    4. Why did Anthony decide to give the dog back to the shelter?
    A. Anthony disliked the dog. B. The dog didn’t accept him.
    C. The dog destroyed the house. D. The dog missed its old owner.
    5. What made Anthony surprised when he read the letter?
    A. The dog’s skills. B. The dog’s owner.
    C. The dog had another name. D. The dog’s reaction to the letter.
    6. Why was the dog once named Tank?
    A. It served bravely in the army. B. It was strong and large in size.
    C. It was named to honour its owner. D. It was connected to its owner’s job.
    7. Which word best matches the dog’s reaction to its former name?
    A. Cold. B. Calm. C. Sensitive. D. Strange.
B 5. C 6. D 7. C

We’ve all been there: it’s a hot summer day, you’re carrying bags of groceries, sweat is dripping down your back, and you absolutely cannot wait to be inside. Then once you get home, you have to turn on the A/C, delaying that precious moment of cool relief. That’s why so many people choose to leave their A/C on even while they’re out. However, many are concerned that this is actually not cost efficient and also wastes a lot of energy. So who’s right?
According to a group of building system engineers who spoke to IFLScience, the answer comes down to just how much energy it costs to cool down your house. The short answer? It’s usually better to turn off the A/C and turn it on when you get home, as this is more energy efficient than keeping the A/C. on all day.
The reason behind this comes down to how heat accrues. First, it flows into the house when the building has less stored heat than outside, and if the amount of heat that flows into your house has a rate of 1 unit per hour, then the A/C will have 1 unit of heat to remove each hour. However, if you turn it off and let the heat increase, you could have 8 hours of heat stored up at the end of the day.
Sometimes it’s less than that since houses have a limit to how much heat can be stored in them, and it all depends on the temperature at which the building starts. I your house can store 5 units of energy before reaching balance with the outside temperature, then you’ll only have to remove 5 units of heat. As your house heats up, the process of heat transfer stars to slow down and eventually reaches zero when balance is reached. A/C works less efficiently with extreme heat, so if you keep it off during the hottest part of the day, you’ll save more energy overall and even increase overall efficiency of your system.
    8. What’s the benefit to keep the air conditioner on all day?
    A. You protect the A/C. B. You always have a cool house.
    C. You save a great deal of energy. D. You avoid the trouble to turn it on.
    9. What should we do according to the engineers’ opinion?
    A. Use energy efficient the A/C. B. Keep the indoor temperature steady.
    C. Shut the A/C when you go out. D. Know the energy to cool down your house.
    10. What does the underlined word “accrues” mean in paragraph 3?
    A. Acts. B. Reduces. C. Escapes. D. Gathers.
    11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. Energy-saving principles. B. The process of A/C working.
    C. Heat exchange in a house. D. Ways to keep your home cool.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“Then once you get home, you have to turn on the A/C, delaying that precious moment of cool relief. That’s why so many people choose to leave their A/C on even while they’re out. (然后,一旦你回到家,你必须打开空调,推迟那宝贵的凉爽缓解时刻。这就是为什么这么多人选择在外出时打开空调的原因。)”可知,一旦回到家,你就不得不打开空调,耽误了那宝贵的放松时光。这就是为什么很多人即使外出也会开着空调的原因。即你一回到家就凉爽。故选B项。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“It’s usually better to turn off the A/C and turn it on when you get home, as this is more energy efficient than keeping the A/C. on all day.(通常最好在回家时关闭空调并打开它,因为这比整天开着空调更节能。)”
根据“The reason behind this comes down to how heat accrues. First, it flows into the house when the building has less stored heat than outside, and if the amount of heat that flows into your house has a rate of 1 unit per hour, then the A/C will have 1 unit of heat to remove each hour. (这背后的原因归结为热量的……方式。首先,当建筑物储存的热量少于外部时,它会流入房屋,如果流入房屋的热量为每小时1个单位,那么空调每小时将有 1 个单位的热量要去除。)”可知,这背后的原因可以归结为热量是如何积累的。首先,当建筑储存的热量比室外少时,热量就会流入室内。此处accrues的意思是“积累”,与gathers是同义词。故选D项。
    【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Sometimes it’s less than that since houses have a limit to how much heat can be stored in them, and it all depends on the temperature at which the building starts. I your house can store 5 units of energy before reaching balance with the outside temperature, then you’ll only have to remove 5 units of heat. As your house heats up, the process of heat transfer stars to slow down and eventually reaches zero when balance is reached. A/C works less efficiently with extreme heat, so if you keep it off during the hottest part of the day, you’ll save more energy overall and even increase overall efficiency of your system.(有时它比这要少,因为房屋可以储存多少热量是有限制的,这完全取决于建筑物启动的温度。 故选A项。

故填are。
故填which。

故填as。
故填to include。

It is strange how a single moment can change a person’s life. It is incredible how one simple act of love can forever transform one’s soul. My adult son walked to the table this morning for breakfast and as he did he opened his arms to me. I opened my arms too and gave him a big hug just like I do every morning. And this time when I did a beautiful memory came back to me.
My Italian Nana had been a big hugger when I was a boy, but my Mom had grown up in a more reserved household. She hugged me sometimes but less often as I grew into my teenage years. My Dad too seemed to follow the gender roles of the day back then and didn’t hug me much as I got older. By the time I was a teenager then, except for my Nana, I didn’t hug anyone.
When I was sixteen, I left on a trip with a group of boys to tour a Seminary College in the Mid-West. And on our way there we also stopped by an old Monastery. As we entered we were greeted there by the largest monk I had ever seen. He was over six and a half feet tall with huge arms and a booming voice.
And as he greeted us, he gave each one of us a huge hug. When my own turn came I felt scared but stepped in and hugged him back. I felt a warmth in my heart as he shared his loving-kindness. I felt a peace and joy in my spirit as well. It was amazing. Later that day I began to wonder why I had ever stopped giving and receiving hugs when they brought so much joy. When my own childrenwere born then I decided to never stop hugging them and telling them I loved them, no matter how big they grew or how old they got.
I sent my hug experiences online to call on people to do the same.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I organized a “Hug me” campaign with my friends.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I send my hug experiences online to call on people to do the same. And it got a huge response from people. A lot of people emailed me to tell me they felt the same way as I did. They shared their hugging stories with me, saying that hugs gave them deep love and made them grow healthy and happily. I selected 100 of the most moving stories and published a book with the permission of their writers. To my great joy, the book became the best seller of the year, which encouraged me to go further
I organized a “Hug Me” campaign with my friends. We went to quite a few public places, such as supermarkets, squares, entrances to the cinema and so on, where we put up our board to promote the power of hugging. We tried to encourage people to hug their family members, relatives, friends and even strangers. We also hugged every stranger who were willing to give us a hug. A little hug is a sign of deep love and a hug can make a difference.
