The family of a 6yearold adopted Chinese girl who badly needs a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植) believes they have found a match in China.
Kailee Wells suffers from a serious aplastic anemia (再生障碍性贫血), which prevents bone marrow from producing new blood cells. She has taken courses of treatment but has shown little sign of recovery.
The best help for such patients is a transplant of healthy marrow or blood cells from a suitable donor. Certain tissue of the patient and the donor must match.
Kailee's mother, Linda Wells, made her second trip to China earlier this month to find a donor. Her husband, Owen Wells, said that his wife believed doctors there had found a match.
“For these last 22 months, we've been living in fear that Kailee would take a turn for the worse and there would be nothing we could do about it,” he said.“Now we have something we can use and save our little girl. We are just about ready to start jumping up and down and rejoicing.”
Wells said a Chinese girl who is about a year old has a blood sample that matches Kailee's perfectly. The next step, he said, would be to make sure the sample is safely harvested and protected for transplant, the details of which have yet to be worked out.
Linda Wells first traveled to China in February to try to locate the girl's birth mother, who is likely to be a match. But she found no relatives and decided to try again this month.
“This gives us so much encouragement because now we found what we thought we would never be able to find for Kailee,” Owen Wells said. “We're going to continue our blood donor drive to try to continue to help as many people as we possibly can. We're just so happy.”
4. What do we know about Kailee Wells?

7. What would be the best title for the text?

Mention the terms Italian culture and Renaissance art and one is immediately reminded of the mysterious smile of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
The Renaissance had a deep effect on the development of European culture. Having its beginnings in Italy, by the 16th century, it had spread to the rest of Europe. Its influence was felt in different fields such as philosophy, literature, religion, science, politics, and, of course, art. The scholars of the Renaissance period applied the humanistic method to every field of study, and wanted to have human emotion and realism in art.
Renaissance scholars studied the ancient Latin and Greek texts, searching the libraries of Europe for works of ancient times that had become obscure, in their hunt for reforming and perfecting their worldly knowledge. However, that does not mean that they refused religion. In fact, many of the greatest works of the Renaissance period were devoted to it, with the church supporting a lot of the works of Renaissance art. However, there were slight changes in the manner in which the scholars began to treat religion, which affected the cultural life of society, which in turn influenced the artists of that period and therefore was reflected in their art.
In Raphael’s The School of Athens, for example, some well-known people were described as classical scholars with Leonardo da Vinci given as much importance as Plato in his time. Giotto di Bondone, 1266—1337, a Florentine, who is regarded as the greatest Italian painter just earlier than the Renaissance period, is thought to be the first artist who treated a painting as a window into space.
However, it was only after the writings of Filippo Brunelleschi, 1377—1446, who is considered the first great builder of the Italian Renaissance, that perspective(透视法)was formally accepted as an artistic technique.
8.What makes Italy stand out in a way in world history?
A.Its artists during the Renaissance were numerous.
B.It was the center of the European countries.
C.It had many famous inventors in different fields.
D.It was home to the Renaissance.
9.The underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 3 most probably means .
A.meaningless and hard to recognize
B.clear and meaningful to guiding people
C.unclear and difficult to understand or see
D.easy to understand but having little meaning
10.When was perspective officially accepted during the Renaissance?
A.After the completion of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
B.After Leonardo da Vinci’s being compared to Plato.
C.After Giotto di Bondone’s paintings were respected.
D.After Filippo Brunelleschi’s completing his writings.
11.The passage aims to tell us .
A.Italy’s Renaissance art and artists
B.the famous artists in Italy’s history
C.Italy’s influence on the world in culture
D.the hardships during the Renaissance in Italy

By now you’ve probably heard about the “you’re not special” speech, when English teacher David McCullough told graduating seniors at Wellesley High School: “Do not get the idea you’re anything special, because you’re not.” Mothers and fathers present at the ceremony — and a whole lot of other parents across the Internet — took issue with McCullough’s ego-puncturing words. But lost in the uproar was something we really should be taking to heart: our young people actually have no idea whether they’re particularly talented or accomplished or not. In our eagerness to elevate their self-esteem, we forgot to teach them how to realistically assess their own abilities, a crucial requirement for getting better at anything from math to music to sports. In fact, it’s not just privileged high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above average.
Such inflated self-judgments have been found in study after study, and it’s often exactly when we’re least competent at a given task that we rate our performance most generously. In a 2006 study published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on an essay test were the most charitable in their self-evaluations, while high-scoring students judged themselves much more strictly. Poor students, the authors note, “lack insight” into their own inadequacy. Why should this be? Another study, led by Cornell University psychologist David Dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. People who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor Justin Kruger, suffer from a “dual burden”: they’re not good at what they do, and their very incapability prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.
In Dunning and Kruger’s study, subjects scoring at the bottom of the heap on tests of logic, grammar and humor “extremely overestimated” their talents. What these individuals lacked (in addition to clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was “metacognitive skill”: the capacity to monitor how well they’re performing. In the absence of that capacity, the subjects arrived at an overly hopeful view of their own abilities. There’s a paradox here, the authors note: “The skills that lead to competence in a particular domain are often the very same skills necessary to evaluate competence in that domain.” In other words, to get better at judging how well we’re doing at an activity, we have to get better at the activity itself.
There are a couple of ways out of this double bind. First, we can learn to make honest comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you yourself don’t possess it, and compare what you can do against what truly excellent individuals are able to accomplish. Second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. Find a critic who will tell you not only how poorly you’re doing, but just what it is that you’re doing wrong. As Dunning and Kruger note, success indicates to us that everything went right, but failure is more ambiguous: any number of things could have gone wrong. Use this external feedback to figure out exactly where and when you screwed up.
If we adopt these strategies — and most importantly, teach them to our children — they won’t need parents, or a commencement (毕业典礼) speaker, to tell them that they’re special. They’ll already know that they are, or have a plan to get that way.

A.we don't know whether our young people are talented or not
B.young people don't know how to assess their abilities realistically
C.no requirement is set up for young people to get better
D.we always tend to consider ourselves to be privileged
14.Which is NOT mentioned about poor students according to the passage?
A.They usually give themselves high scores in self-evaluations.
B.They tend to be unable to know exactly how bad they are.
C.They are intelligently inadequate in tests and exams.
D.They lack the capacity to monitor how well they are performing.
15.We can infer from the passage that those high-scoring students ______.
A.know how to cultivate clear logic and proper grammar
B.tend to underestimate their performance because they know their limits
C.tend to regard themselves as competent due to their strict self-judgement
D.tend to be very competent in judging their performance in their high-scoring fields.

Talking with Your Parents
Learning to deal with your parents as a young adult is a tough task. Sometimes, parents struggle to admit you have grown up and can care for yourself. Other times, they may simply have thought otherwise. No doubt, communication is the best way to solve the conflict. Here are some tips on that.

Choose a time when your parents can sit down and talk with you without being distracted. Try to talk with your parents alone at first. If you live away from home, call and ask what time would work the best for them. ____17____
Be straightforward and honest.
You are only as good as your words, so don't lie. Simply recount the events from your list and include your emotional reactions. If it is easier, you may ask your parents to remain silent until you finish with an initial 'list' of concerns. ____18____They can make you a bitter, angry person. Listen and ask questions.
When your parents get a chance to talk, respect them and listen carefully. This is your opportunity to try to understand where they are coming from. There is a possibility that the same event was viewed in two different ways. ____19____It may be helpful to write down any questions as they are talking.
Ask for advice.
Keep parts of the conversation positive by telling your parents about your goals for the future. Discuss your financial, romantic, or work plans and ask for their advice? ____20____
A.Pick a good setting.
B.Choose a suitable time.
C.Wait until they are finished and ask some questions.

Sign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that signed languages are 21 —a speech of the hand. The current interest in sign language has roots in the 26 work of one rebel teacher at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the world’s only liberal arts university for deaf people.
When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something 27 ; among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher.
Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural 28 , each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language (ASL) was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English (混杂英语). But Stokoe believed the “hand 29 ” his students used looked richer. He wondered: Might deaf people actually have a genuine language? And could that language be 30 any other on Earth? It was 1955, when even deaf people 31 their signing as “substandard”. Stokoe’s idea was academic heresy – a belief contrary to what was generally accepted.
It is 37 years later. Stokoe—now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture—is having lunch at a cafe near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a(n) 32 . My days always started with a two-to four-mile run on a nearby greenway. For about two years, I had a very faithful running partner. This giant, orange tabby cat was probably the gentlest cat I had ever encountered. He would see me climbing the hill and join in, running alongside me for about a quarter mile until he meowed enough to get me to stop and pet him. A few minutes later, when I attempted to restart my run, he would wind around my ankles to keep me longer. Although he was a rather fat fellow, I always brought him some cat food.
On fair-weather afternoons, I would pick up my four-year-old granddaughter from pre-school and we would visit the tabby cat together. She would insist on bringing him an afternoon treat. Before long, he started winding around her little ankles as well.
One day, while my granddaughter was pouring out the plastic baggie full of cat chow mixed with leftover chicken, she brought up a good point. She cried out, “We've got to call them something!” My granddaughter stepped back and, deep in thought, studied the cat carefully as he enjoyed the remains of her Happy Meal. Then she announced, “I've got it! Tom Tom! ”
All the regular runners, walkers, bikers and visitors to the greenway soon came to know the big, friendly orange tabby as "Tom Tom". My granddaughter loved the cat. She looked forward to our greenway walks and visiting Tom Tom, something simple that the two of us did together. With her birthday approaching, I wanted to do something extra special. I cooperated with a local college art student and produced a self-published children's book for my granddaughter about our greenway friend. My only real intent was to print a copy or two for her birthday, so I was pleasantly surprised when several copies were sold! Soon, Tom Tom became the most famous cat in town!
