I’m ging t be cmpletely hnest. I have n idea hw I ended up with this pprtunity, I have n idea what I’m ding, but I am very happy t be here.
Last summer a friend tagged me in a Facebk pst frm BBC Earth and encuraged me t apply t the BBC Presenter Search 2018. The assignment was easy and hard, make a vide shrter than 60 secnds where yu talk abut smething in science yu think is cl. Simple cncept, but fr me it was challenging as I want t talk abut bryphytes(苔藓植物) frever (which is slightly lnger than 60 secnds).
S I decided t make an attempt. I was ging t make a 60 secnd vide abut sphagnum(水苔), cmmnly knwn as peat mss and uncmmnly knwn as an unsung climate her. Sphagnum is the plant genus that hlds the mst carbn in the wrld, it slwly builds up its carbn strage ver hundreds f thusands f years and if undisturbed, they never let g f the carbn they gathered.
Making a shrt vide n this was hard because I wanted t include everything. And it became even harder as I had n ne t hld the camera. I tied my camera t the scrawniest little tree, swinging in the wind as a bird tried t chase me away frm the mud. This chas ended up as the vide “Why sphagnum is awesme” n my channel. I submitted the vide, but didn’t dare t write in the descriptin sectin f the vide that it was a submissin, because I never imagined that I culd win!
    But I did.
I waited tw mnths befre I culd tell peple that I had wn the search, and when the news came ut, I received the mst attentin I’ve had in my entire life.
N matter yur backgrund, whether yu want t pass the time r pass an exam, I really hpe yu enjy the vide!
    24. What can we infer abut the authr frm paragraph 1?

    C. She is unable t achieve the gal.D. She knws much abut the ending.
    25. Which f the fllwing is NOT true abut sphagnum?
    A. It can frm its carbn strage in a very slw way.
    B. It is universally recgnized as an unknwn climate her.
    C. It wn’t release the carbn withut being disturbed.
    D. It cntains a large amunt f carbn.
    26. The underlined wrd “scrawniest” in Paragraph 4 prbably means ___________.

If we want a fair sht at transitining t renewable energy, we’ll need ne critical thing: technlgies that can change electricity frm wind and sun int a chemical fuel fr strage and vice versa (反之亦然). Cmmercial devices that d this exist, but mst are cstly and perfrm nly half f the expectatin. Nw, researchers have created small lab-scale devices that d bth jbs. If larger versins wrk as well, they wuld help make it pssible—r at least mre affrdable—t run the wrld n renewables.
The market fr such technlgies has grwn alng with renewables: In 2007, slar and wind prvided just 0.8% f all pwer in the United States: in 2017, that number was 8%, accrding t the U. S. Energy Infrmatin Administratin. But the demand fr electricity ften desn’t match the supply frm slar and wind. In sunny Califrnia, fr example, slar panels regularly prduce mre pwer than needed in the middle f the day, but nne at night, after mst wrkers and students return hme.
Sme cmpanies are beginning t install massive rws f batteries in hpes f string extra energy and balancing the financial sheet. But batteries are cstly and stre nly enugh energy t back up the pwer system fr a few hurs at mst. Anther ptin is t stre the energy by transfrming it int hydrgen fuel. Devices called electrlyzers (电解器) d this by using electricity—ideally frm slar and wind pwer—t break dwn water int xygen and hydrgen gas, a carbn-free fuel. A secnd set f devices called fuel cells can then transfrm that hydrgen back t electricity t pwer cars, trucks, and buses, r t feed it t the pwer system. But cmmercial electrlyzers and fuel cells use different catalysts (催化剂) t speed up the tw reactins, meaning a single device can t d bth jbs. The researchers must cnquer this.
“They did a really gd jb with that.” says Sssina Haile, a chemist at Nrthwestern University in Evanstn. Still, she hlds a cautius view that bth her new device and the ne frm the O’Hayre lab are small labratry demnstratins. Fr the technlgy t have a scietal impact, researchers will need t scale up the buttn-size devices, a prcess that typically reduces perfrmance.
    28. What can we learn abut the new device frm the first paragraph?
    A. Its universal use remains t be seen.
    B. It is mre expensive but mre practical.
    C. It can transfrm mre renewable energy.
    D. It is the mst advanced arund the wrld.
    29. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?

    B. The ptential market fr energy transfrmatin technlgies.
    C. The histry f energy transfrmatin technlgies.
    D. The lack f pwer in Califrnia.
    30. What may the researchers fcus n next?
    A. Lessening cstly batteries.
    B. Increasing the efficiency f the tw reactins.
    C. Lking fr ne shared catalysts fr the tw reactins.
D Breaking dwn water int a carbn-free fuel withut using electricity.
    31. What is Haile’s attitude t the future f the new device?
    A. Psitive. B. Negative. C. Critical. D. Cautius.
    D
Take a walk thrugh Washingtn and yu’ll find plenty f marble memrials(纪念碑). But is that what the future f the memrial-rich city hlds? If the winners f a new design cmpetitin have their way, prbably nt.
The Memrials fr the Future design cmpetitin invited submissins (意见书) frm teams thrughut the wrld. Thugh, the memrials selected wn’t actually be built in the city, they were intended t start a discussin abut hw t think f memrials in a very different future.
Climate Chrngraph, the winning prject by Team Azimuth Land Craft, greatly departs frm memrials as we knw them. The prject memrializes the harmful effects f climate change by suggesting a memrial at Hains Pint, a spt between the Ptmac River and Washingtn Channel. Just 100 years ag, the man-made island was part f the river. It came int existence after the Natinal Park Service decided t turn the cnfluence(合流点) f the waters int a tidal basin t prtect the nearby Natinal Mall frm flds.
Thse flds are expected t cme mre and mre ften as the climate changes. Climate Chrngraph will memrialize thse changes by planting cherry trees as a kind f tidal gauge(潮位计) that can be used by future visitrs t determine just hw much water levels have risen.
The ther winning prjects include a prject that frees mechanical parrts that fly ver the Jeffersn Memrial and cllect and retell stries abut mnuments,a pdcast (播客) platfrm that puts immigrant stries n public transprtatin, and an interactive memrial that brings natinal parks t the D. C. Metr. The cmpetitin als prduced a reprt that pints t ways America can better memrialize the things that matter—strategies that culd help cities save mney and space.
That’s gd news, especially given that D. C. ’s icnic Mall has been clsed t new cnstructin. The memrials f the future wn’t just turn cllective memries tward the stries f new phenmena and grups like climate change and immigrants. Rather, it seems that they’ll make use f space in new creative ways—n marble needed.
    32. What is the purpse f the design cmpetitin?
    A. T select the best design team. B. T find new uses fr ld memrials.
    C. T design new memrials fr Washingtn. D. T explre new ways f experiencing memrials.
    33. What can be used t replace the underlined wrd “departs” in Paragraph 3?
    A. Differs B. Benefits C. Suffers D. Learns
    34. What d we knw abut Climate Chrngraph?
    A. It will be lcated in a park.
    B. It will be built after the cmpetitin.
    C. It clearly shws the effects f climate change.
    D. It uses high-tech equipment t measure climate change.
    35. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
    A. A memrial t a sad future. B. Marble memrials are ut f date.
    C. Climate Chrngraph, memrial fr ur future. D. What will the memrials f the future lk like?
