(2023春·广东江门·高一江门市新会第一中学校考期中)The second-largest city in Switzerland after Zurich Geneva has a desirable position on the southwestern end of Lake Geneva. Visitors to Geneva will find it an elegant city with extremely attractive scenery. Here are some best things to do in Geneva.
Catch the Spray (水雾) From the Jet d’Eau
Made in 1886 to control the outflow of water from a nearby power station, the Jet d’Eau (water jet) soon became a symbol of the city. It shoots water nearly 140 meters into the air. Unless winds are too strong, the Jet d’Eau opens every day and lights up at night. If you get close enough, you’ll get hit with a refreshing spray.
    Tour the Palais des Nations
Built in the 1930s, the Palais des Nations (Palace of Nations) is the second-largest UN headquarters It’s one of the largest diplomatic conference (外交会议) centers globally. It’s a big building located in Ariana Park. Visitors are free to wander the grounds or make an hour-long guided tour of several of the buildings.
Take a Break at the Jardin Anglais &the Flower Clock
All roads in Geneva seem to lead to the Jardin Anglais — the English Garden-the small, prettily planted lakefront garden in the center of Geneva. Crowds gather here for the flower clock, an oversized timepiece planted with seasonal flowers. Plenty of sitting areas, hundred-year-old shade trees, and a central fountain make this a relaxing place to take a break from sightseeing.
Walk along the Lakefront and Riverside
The Jardin Anglais is just one place to admire the lake and the Jet d’Eau. Visitors can wander along the entire lakefront. There are 6 miles of walking and bike paths along the lakefront.Swans pass by during the day, and at night, the riverfront and surrounding buildings are romantically lit.
1.When is the Jet d’Eau closed to visitors?
A.On weekend nights. B.On high windy days.
C.On cold winter days. D.On national holidays.
2.What does the Palais des Nations offer visitors?

Charlieeeeeeee, do your homework now!” his mother was shouting.
Charlie thought, “Well she doesn’t have to do it.” and he spent hours with his books, hoping that time would pass and it would soon be time for supper. As usual, he was lying on his bed, busy staring at the ceiling, daydreaming. Suddenly some little elves (精灵), no more than a centimetre tall, appeared by the window.
One of the elves asked Charlie politely to give them his homework so they can play with it.
Charlie agreed and watched his guests, and was so surprised to see what they did. In less than a minute, they had formed teams and were busy playing with the pen, the eraser, the book, and the pad of paper. Very strange stuff they were getting up to. Like with the sums, instead of moving the pen across the paper, they would hold the pen still and move the paper instead. Or like how they had races to see who could do the sums fastest. They also used well-known songs to learn the words to them. When they had done that they put on a big concert to sing those songs.
Charlie really enjoyed watching those little students. He even joined in with the singing.
“Aww, this is so much fun...”
“Of course, it’s fun! Why don’t you try it for a few days yourself? We’ll all come back to see you again from time to time.”
    “Deal!” agreed Charlie.
So, every evening, Charlie started playing with his homework, inventing new and crazier ways to make it more fun. He would sing loads of songs and do all manner of other things too. Now and again, his elf friends would turn up.
Neither Charlie’s parents, nor his teachers, nor anyone in the whole school could understand the great change in him. From that day on, not only did he spend a lot more time doing homework, he did it perfectly. He was very happy, and was always singing. His mother told him how proud she was at seeing him work so hard.
But Charlie said to himself, “Well, she doesn’t have to do it. It’s fun!”
4.What did Charlie think of his homework at first?
    A.It’s difficult. B.it’s boring. C.It’s tiring. D.It’s upsetting.
5.What did the elves do after they appeared in Charlie’s room?
A.They politely asked Charlie to watch their performance.
B.They patiently taught Charlie to sing songs together.
C.They finished Charlie’s homework in a fun way.
D.They tried to stop charlie doing his homework.
6.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 7 refer to?
    A.Singing the well-known songs.
    B.Playing with the homework.
    C.Moving the paper instead.
    D.Performing in a big concert.
7.What did Charlie do after he made an agreement with the elves?

(2023秋·湖南张家界·高一统考期末)Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? How annoying! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat, so they rarely have weight problems.
To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic (基因的) factors. They also believe they have now identified the genes that may cause this tendency. These genes, according to the scientists, get passed down the generations. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the numbers of people who are overweight continues to grow. In the United States, over seventy percent of the population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illness such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects, such as heart problems. However, it takes a long time to develop and thoroughly test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
8.According to the scientists, some people ________.
A.are able to stay thin because of genetic factors
B.can eat what they want and stay healthy forever
C.usually keep doing exercise to lose their weight
D.don’t eat anything every day but still put on weight
8.Some people don’t need to worry about weight problems because ________.
    A.they eat many vegetables
    B.they eat less than others
C.they don’t store any energy from food as fat
D.they can burn off the extra food without making fat
10.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fewer people will have weight problems in the future.
B.People with weight problems may suffer from heart trouble.
C.We now have good medicine for people with weight problems.
D.The result of the experiments on mice and humans are different.
11.What does the last paragraph imply?
A.Current medicine solve weight problems well.
B.We should exercise regularly and eat properly.
C.Taking exercise every day may cause heart problems.
D.Testing new drugs is hard because of the side effects.
    【答案】8.A 9.D 10.B 11.B

(然而,科学家们开始认为有些人的保持苗条的能力来自他们的父母)”和第三段中“Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic (基因的) factors. 故选A项。
根据第二段中“Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat, so they rarely have weight problems.
根据第四段中“In the United States, over seventy percent of the population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illness such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
根据最后一段中“Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise.

(2023秋·福建泉州·高一统考期末)In the concert celebrating the Tsinghua University’s 110th anniversary, Fang Jinlong, a master of the traditional Chinese instrument pipa, and three robots from the Tsinghua Moja Robot Band performed several Chinese music pieces. “I’m happy to see our performance can mix science and technology with traditional Chinese culture,” said Fang.
The robot band was founded in 2018. The band name “Moja” is from Mohism, one of many schools of thought before the Qin Dynasty. It is made up of three robot musicians, Yuheng, Yaoguang and Kaiyang, named after three stars. They played three kinds of traditional Chinese instruments: the bamboo flute, Chinese harp and paigu, a set of Chinese drums, at the concert. The team behind the band include students, teachers and graduates from Tsinghua University. They have professional backgrounds such as computing, mechanical engineering and music composition (作曲).

Mi said traditional Chinese instruments’ sound and playing techniques are different from those of Western musical instruments. The focus is more on the artistic conception (概念) and expression of the players. This kind of non-quantitative (非定量的) control brings challenges to Moja robot development. “In our research, we continuously explore how to solve these problems so that the robots can maintain the Chinese traditional characteristics when playing music,” he added.
Mi said the music pieces in the concert were specially made for the robots to play. The robots’ stage clothes were made with 3D-printing technology. He added that there are more performance plans for Moja in the future, introducing new music pieces. The team, meanwhile, would improve the musical expression of the robots.
12.What is the performance like according to Fang Jinlong?
A.Traditional yet creative. B.Fancy and fashionable.
    C.Virtual yet accessible. D.Unique and fast-paced.
13.What can we learn about the band?
A.It has a stable performing style. B.Its name came from online language.
C.It successfully mixes high-tech and tradition. D.Its performers play western musical instruments.
14.Where can you find the difficulty of the band’s development?
    A.In paragraph 2. B.In paragraph 3.
    C.In paragraph 4. D.In paragraph 5.
15.What will the developers do in the future?
    A.Create more new robot musicians.
B.Get the robots to practise more often.
C.Design new clothes for the robots.
    D.Improve the robots’ musical performance.

A. attracted吸引;B. supported支持;C. impressed使...... 根据下文“When I went back home after school or work, I always watched the Cubs with him. Two decades after my father’s ____22____, every time I watch the Cubs on television, I think of him and ____23____ with him in my head about their game 故选A项。
A. illness生病;B. death去世;C. return回归;D. arrival到达。句中提到I think of him和in my head,由此判断,作者的父亲应该是去世了(death)。故选B项。
A. joke开玩笑;B. agree同意;C. discuss讨论;D. argue争论。根据下文“We had nothing to ____27____ as we watched them play, except for the ____28____ of enjoying the games together as father and son, which was much greater than it would have been, if either of us had ____29____ without the other.
根据后文“A ball game might seem, frankly, sort of ____25____ compared with family and career concerns. 故选A项。
A. funny有趣的;B. healthy健康的;C. dangerous危险的;D. useless无用的。上文“Perhaps baseball is too small a thing for father and son to connect over.
根据下文“We had nothing to ____27____ as we watched them play, except for the ____28____ of enjoying the games together as father and son, which was much greater than it would have been, if either of us had ____29____ without the other.
A. gain获得;B. keep保持;C. expect期盼;D. offer提供。 故选A项。
A. importance重要性;B. satisfaction满足;C. pride骄傲;D. power力量。根据下文“Sportswriters find that 42 percent of sports fans were ‘very ____32____’ with their family life, compared with less than a quarter of nonfans.
A. started开始;B. played玩;C. watched观看;D. enjoyed享受。根据第一段中“When I went back home after school or work, I always watched the Cubs with him.
A. touched感动;B. praised赞美;C. entertained招待,使快乐;D. connected连接。根据上文“Two decades after my father’s ____22____, every time I watch the Cubs on television, I think of him and ____23____ with him in my head about their game (当我放学或下班回家时,我总是和他一起看小熊队的比赛。
A. attitudes态度;B. interests兴趣;C. explanations解释;D. experiences经验,经历。上文“We had nothing to ____27____ as we watched them play, except for the ____28____ of enjoying the games together as father and son, which was much greater than it would have been, if either of us had ____29____ without the other.( 当我们看他们比赛的时候,我们什么也得不到,除了像父子一样一起享受比赛的满足感之外,这种满足感比我们中任何一个人单独观看比赛要大得多。)”,以及下文“Sportswriters find that 42 percent of sports fans were ‘very ____32____’ with their family life, compared with less than a quarter of nonfans.
上文“We had nothing to ____27____ as we watched them play, except for the ____28____ of enjoying the games together as father and son, which was much greater than it would have been, if either of us had ____29____ without the other.
A. relationships关系;B. conversations对话;C. days天;D. moments时刻。根据上文“Perhaps baseball is too ____24____ a thing for father and son to connect over. A ball game might seem, frankly, sort of ____25____ compared with family and career concerns. ,以及下文“Sportswriters find that 42 percent of sports fans were ‘very ____32____’ with their family life, compared with less than a quarter of nonfans. 故选A。
A. leading to导致;B. suffering from遭受;C. getting over克服;D. asking about询问。
