If you are currently learning English, I highly recommend you check out the apps below.
    Quizlet
When learning English, you probably have to memorize a lot of words. If you want to grow your vocabulary as fast as possible, a flashcard app like Quizlet is a great shortcut. With Quizlet, you can create a set of flashcards with new English words you are trying to learn, and practice typing them out until you know them by heart. It's a simple concept, but it's highly effective.
    Spotify
Spotify is not a language learning app. But chances are that you already use it or a similar app for listening to music or podcasts, and one of the effective ways to study is combining something you already use into your existing habits. If Spotify is already on your phone, you can subscribe to some podcasts for English learners or download playlists of songs for learning English, or make your own.
    Beelinguapp
Beelinguapp makes reading in English as convenient as possible. It shows you a text in your own language with the English translation side-by-side. Texts are short enough so that you can really dig into every word. They cover topics from fairytales, to science, to current news articles. There's even a "karaoke" feature where you can read along to audio, which helps you match up the English pronunciation with the English spellings.
    Tandem
Tandem is a language exchange app which connects learners from all over the world. It can help you find a native English speaker who is trying to learn your native language, so you can swap language skills. If you only have five minutes to spare, you can simply exchange messages with a native English speaker. If you have more time, you can have a longer, digital language exchange" by sharing voice notes, or using video chat. It's a great way to test your English skills out with real people.
    21. What is Spotify intended to help people do?
    A. Develop a good habit. B. Listen to music or podcasts.
    C. Learn a foreign language. D. Memorize words with flashcards.
    22. What is the advantage of Beelinguapp?
    A. Learners can use their native language as a reference.
    B. It's convenient for learners to translate voice notes.
    C. It provides learners a chance to tell their own stories.
    D. Learners can sing English songs along to the music.
    23. Which app can help people interact with a native speaker?
    A. Quizlet. B. Spotify. C. Beelinguapp. D. Tandem.

Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881—1973) is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. It is said that everything his brush touched turned to gold. But in truth, the value of his work could be worth more than any precious metal. Picasso created more than 20,000 works in his life, including two of the world’s 10 most expensive paintings.
Between 1907 and 1913, Picasso and his colleague Georges Braque started a revolution in painting. Before that, paintings were like windows — they were painted to look as if they had depth. You could tell which objects were “close” to you and which objects were “far away”. But Picasso and Braque didn’t want to paint like that any more. To them, a painting wasn’t a window to the world; it was marks and lines on a flat surface. Why, they thought, should an object like a guitar be shown only from one angle? A guitar can look very different depending on which angle one looks at it from. Their answer was to show all the angles. They broke the guitar up into pieces. Their style of painting is called cubism.
But why did they feel such a need to change things? Well, the world around them was changing, too. Science was turning people’s ideas upside down. Albert Einstein’s theory was proving that what we knew about time and space was wrong. And new political movements like socialism were on the rise. The world was becoming different; artists needed to start seeing and painting it differently.
The famous and terrifying painting Guernica (1937) shows the horror of the bombing(轰炸) of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. In the painting, you can actually see the sky falling. Picasso couldn’t have painted it without the skills he learned during his cubist period. Breaking a guitar into pieces was his preparation for showing the world being blown to pieces.
    24. What is the article mainly about?
    A. The high price of Picasso’s paintings. B. Picasso’s difficulties in career.
    C. The popularity of Picasso’s paintings. D. Picasso’s achievements in art.
    25. In what way did Picasso and Braque paint?
    A. They painted objects with different depths.
    B. They made their paintings look like windows.
    C. They painted an object from different angles.
    D. They broke objects into pieces and painted them.
    26. What caused Picasso and Braque to start cubism?
    A. Einstein’s theory. B. The changing world.
    C. The rising socialism. D. New political movements.
    27. The painting Guernica is mentioned to show _______.
    A. the themes of Picasso’s paintings B. the anger of Picasso at the war
    C. the preparations Picasso made before D. the artistic effect of cubism
    C
Called “America’s wolf”, the red wolf is the only large predator whose historic range is found entirely within the United States, stretching from Texas to New England. But hunting gradually reduced its range, and it was declared extinct in the wild in 1980.
Recovery efforts in the wild began in 1987 on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. In a ground-breaking successful experiment, eight captive (圈养的) wolves were released this year into North Carolina, eventually growing into a population over 100, reaching a peak of around 120 wolves in 2012. But illegal hunting and management changes by the Fish and Wildlife Service resulted in their numbers plummeting.
In the spring, conservationists celebrated a small bit of good news when four captive-born pups (幼兽) were placed into a cave and successfully adopted by a wild red wolf mother. Meanwhile, another four adults were released into the wild. The pups are thought to be still alive and healthy. But the adults didn’t go well. In the months after release, three were struck by cars and killed, and the fourth was fatally shot on private land.
To boost the population after these deaths, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in November that it planned to release nine adult red wolves into their recovery area this winter, land within and surrounding two wildlife reserves.
The Service also recently announced it would abandon a 2018 proposal to shrink (缩小) the red wolves’ protected area in North Carolina by 90 percent, after a lawsuit accused the agency of going against the Endangered Species Act. Ron Sutherland of the Wildlands Network says it’s crucial that the agency has abandoned this wrong-headed proposal. And yet the situation now is even more urgent than it was in 2018 — this should launch the conservation community in the U. S. into crisis mode to save this species and bring it back from the extinction.
    28. What does the underlined word “plummeting” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. promising. B. declining. C. multiplying. D. increasing.
    29. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
    A. The released wolves lived well.
    B. The population boosted after the release.
    C. The red wolf faced greater threat than before.
    D. The released red wolves still needed protection.
    30. What would the Service do to save red wolves?
    A. Shrink the red wolves’ reserves.
    B. Make a proposal to protect the red wolves.
    C. Put some red wolves in some specific places.
    D. Force the protected area into the state of emergency.
    31. What does the text focus on?
    A. The protection of red wolves. B. Challenges faced by red wolves.
    C. Reasons for red wolves extinction. D. The relationship between red wolves and humans.
    D
When my two boys have free time, they want to go to the mall. No, they aren’t shop-a-holics (购物狂). They want to go to gaze at sneakers.
These aren’t the sneakers you find in Foot Locker. They are limited editions—usually Nikes—that range in price from $250-$900 or more. There’s the Chunky Dunkys, a collaboration between Nike and ice cream maker Ben and Jerry’s. And the Space Jam Jordans. And dozens of other pairs of shoes, all of which they know by name and all of which are very, very expensive.
That made me wonder: How did this sneaker culture develop? After all, when I was a kid, I wanted Jordan brand shoes too. But they cost $100 and I would wear them until they fell apart. Now, my boys long for shoes that cost ten times that and if they got them, they would never even think of scuffing them up by wearing them. It all started during the Industrial Revolution, when the very wealthy began to find they had leisure time on their hands, Elizabeth Semmelhack, who runs the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, told me.
“These’ nouveau riche (暴发户)’ industrialists wanted to show that they had arrived. And so, the ancient game of tennis was revived.” explained Semmelhack, “But the problem with lawn tennis—one, the lawns of lawn tennis are extremely expensive, so they didn’t want people to run around in leather shoes. And two, when you play on lawn, you can get your feet wet. So rubber soled shoes, the sneaker, was invented as something that the wealthy could wear as they pursued these wealthy pleasures. Besides, rubber was, at the time, quite expensive, so having shoes with rubber soles was seen as a status symbol.”
But for most of us, sneakers were something you wore—not something you collected. With the development of internet, older versions of shoes could be purchased and collected. And sneaker companies, Nike especially, leaned into the trend.
    32. What is the Chunky Dunkys?
    A. It’s a company’s name.
    B. It’s a kind of ice cream.
    C. It’s a kind of limited edition sneaker.
    D. It’s one of the author’s kids’ name.
    33. Why did the author mention his experience as a kid?
    A. To show he was poor when he was a kid.
    B. To encourage his children to wear cheap shoes.
    C. To give an example about the development of sneaker culture.
    D. To show Jordan brand shoes have been popular for a long time.
    34. What can we know from Semmelhack’s words?
    A. Rubber soled shoes could prevent feet from wetting.
    B. These ‘nouveau riche’ industrialists created lawn tennis.
    C. Leather shoes were more expensive than rubber soled shoes.
    D. The very wealthy were busy with their work during Industrial Revolution.
    35. What does the author’s attitude towards collecting sneakers?
    A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned.

You don’t have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have to let readers know enough to understand what’s going on.
When you are writing, remember to make it feel real. You are creating a new real world for the readers. ____40____ They are able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it’s like in the new world. At 16, I got what every teenager dreams of — a driver’s license, but I was afraid of driving on the road. “Do you want to drive home, Alice?” Mom asked when she picked me up from school.
I hesitated, saying, “Really? Are you sure?”
“Okay,” I jumped in the driver’s seat as soon as Mom said yes.
When we reached the country road, I stopped. “Now, look both ways,” Mom instructed. “Turn your steering wheel (方向盘) to the left. Give it some gas, but take it slowly. We’re not in any hurry.”
I pulled onto the narrow road. We kept moving and everything was fine until a truck came up. I looked in the mirror. I guessed it didn’t occur to the man to slow down as his truck approached our car. When I failed to speed up, he honked (鸣喇叭). My hands held the steering wheel tightly.
“You’d better turn and let this guy pass,” Mom said.
The guy honked again before I got to where I needed to turn. Mom shouted, “Turn, turn here!”
I felt like I couldn’t make the turn, but I did what I was told. I turned the wheel and our car fell into the ditch (沟渠) alongside the road. My foot hit the gas pedal, and the engine roared like an angry lion. Our car flew across the ditch.
Mom cried, “Hit the brake (刹车)!” The car landed heavily.
My hands dropped from the steering wheel. For a moment, we sat silently. I took several deep breaths, afraid to look at my mom. Finally, she asked, “Are you OK?” “Yeah,” I replied and turned to see an injury to her face. I thought I was going to be blamed, but when our eyes met, she burst into wild laughter. We climbed from the car and leaned against it to steady ourselves.

We had hardly steadied ourselves when we saw the truck driver walking towards us. Anxious and worried, we watched him as he walked, afraid of being scolded. To our surprise, the driver willingly gave us a hand, trying to help us move the car back on the road. The moment he got into the car, he held the steering wheel and hit the gas pedal, but in vain, the car didn’t move. Embarrassed as he was, he beamed a smile, and said: “what a trouble you left to me”. The he tried again, but this time, he hit the gas pedal harder, and quickly, the car moved and came back on the road.
As soon as the truck driver helped drive our car back on the road, Dad called and we drove home. We told him what happened just now. Dad expressed his worry about us and told me that I must drive under his guidance next time in case of emergencies like this. But as for me and mother, we were grateful to the truck driver who helped us out and blessed him from the bottom of my heart. Dad asked me to have a train with him the next days after he came home from work. Finally, with the help of my father’s experienced instructions, I grasped the skills of driving the car, and I thought it was extremely wonderful to drive the car by myself.

W: I know, but they always refuse to drink it.
    (Text 4)
M: The Variety Theatre finally went out of business.
W: Well, that's not a surprise. It was the worst one in town.
    (Text 5)
M: What shall we do this weekend?

    (Text 6)
W: Did you talk to the Browns about their trip to Venezuela?

W: What did they say the weather was like?
M: They said it was extremely cool. They suggested that we take some warm clothes.
W: Uh. Did you ask how the hotels were?
M: It seems that they're excellent and not expensive.
W: Well, that's good. And did they buy much while they were there?
M: No. They advised us not to buy clothes. They're much more expensive than in the States. But they told me you could get some gold jewelry.
    (Text 7)
W: Hello, Mike. What are you doing in this part of London?
M: Well, in fact, I'm looking for a flat around here.
W: A flat? Do you want to move?
M: Yes, actually, believe it or not, Mandy and I are getting married.
W: It's great! Congratulations. When did you decide?
M: Only last week. It was when we were staying with her family in Scotland. Now we're try-ing to find a suitable flat.
W: It will be great to have you as neighbors. I hope you manage to buy one soon.
M: So do I. Now, what about a coffee? There's a good place just around the corner.
    W: What a good idea!
    (Text 8)
M:Excuse me, may I ask you some questions?
    W:Go ahead, please.
M:I hear that you are going to put on a new play soon. I'd like to know about what you do in the play. Could you explain exactly what you do?
W: OK. It's a comedy. The director asked me to play the part of a young lady. We are very busy practising.
M: When will the play be put on?
W: We plan to put it on next week.
M: How do you enjoy your work?
W: Very much, but we have to practise a lot. We practise the movements, and try to remember the lines.

    (Text 9)
M: Hello, darling. I've just heard I have to go to Italy for a couple of days. I'm flying this evening.
W: Oh, David. Do you really have to go? You know the Johnsons are coming around to see us tonight.
M: Yes, I know. But I can't help it. They'll have to come some other time.
W: Then we won't be able to go to the theatre tomorrow.
M: No, I'm afraid we'll have to change all our plans.
W: All right, David. When exactly are you leaving, then?
M: I'm taking the 7:00 plane to Rome.
W: Are you coming home before you go to the airport?
    M: I'm afraid I can't. I'm still having a talk with my boss here.
    W: What about your suitcase?
M: I'm afraid you'll have to pack it for me.
W: And who's fetching it for you?
    M: You'll bring it, darling.
    W: Why me?
M: Because you are coming with me. It's your birthday on Saturday. And this trip is my birth-day present for you. I'll meet you at the airport, three quarters before the flight. Don't forget anything and don't be late. See you later, darling.
    (Text 10)
M: Good morning, everybody. I'm going to share with you my writing experiences. I watch people a lot. I do that when I travel. I've been to many countries such as Britain, Italy and Sweden. So I spend a lot of time at airports. While waiting for my flights , I watch people passing by and start my imagination. For example, the other day, when I was waiting for my flight to Greece , I saw a couple. They were buying magazines at that moment.
They were not wearing business clothes, but the man was carrying a suitcase. Every few seconds, the woman looked around. I wondered if someone was following them. Perhaps they were running away and you know this reminded me of a story in the newspaper that day: a bank clerk stole one million pounds a week before and disappeared with his wife. There was a picture of them in the paper. The couple really looked like the thieves. Maybe I should stop them. Just then, I saw them say goodbye to each other, and the woman walked away. Well, sometimes I make mistakes like that. But I find things like that are very useful for my writing.
