My quest started when I was on the New York subway. Some children were whining. Four trains came screaming into the station at once. I put my hands over my ears and cowered (蜷缩)—the noise was deafening. In cities, the ever-present dull background roar of planes, cars, machinery and voices is a fact of life. There is no escape from it and it was beginning to drive me mad.

In an attempt to recapture some peace, I decided to go on a mission to find the quietest place on Earth to discover whether absolute silence exists. The one place I was most excited about visiting was an anechoic chamber (消声室) in Minnesota.

Ironically, far from being peaceful, most people find its perfect quiet upsetting. And yet I booked a 45-minute session—no one had managed to stay in for that long before. When the heavy door shut behind me, I was plunged into darkness—all lights were turned off because they could also make a noise.

For the first few seconds, being in such a quiet place felt like heaven, a remedy for my unsettled nerves. Then, after a minute or two, I became aware of the sound of my breathing. As the minutes ticked by, the beat of my heart became apparent. Then I heard a strange, metallic scraping noise. Was I hallucinating? The feeling of peace was spoiled by a sensation of disappointment—this place wasn’t quiet at all.

Then I stopped obsessing about what bodily functions I could hear and began to enjoy it. I didn’t feel afraid and came out only because my time was up. Everyone was impressed that I’d beaten the record, but having spent so long searching for quiet, I was comfortable with the feeling of absolute stillness. Afterward, I felt wonderfully rested and calm.

My desire for silence changed my life. I found making space for moments of quiet in my day is the key to happiness. If you can occasionally become master of your own sound environment—from turning off the phone to taking a trip to the countryside, you’ll become a lot more accepting of the noises of everyday life.

24What pushed the author to seek a change?

AThe annoying kids. BLoud chats in stations.

CThe roar of subway. DEndless noises in daily life.

25Why did the author pick the anechoic chamber in Minnesota?

AIt might give perfect silence. BIt launched a time challenge.

CIt offered professional guidance. DIt was the only one of its kind.

26What happened when the author was in the anechoic chamber?

AHe started talking to himself. BHe heard sounds from the outside.

CHe made some mental adjustments. DHe felt scared in the first few minutes.

27What message does the text convey?

ANoises stop us from making progress. BMoments of inner quiet better our lives.

CWe should bravely overcome our fears. DA state of peace and calm is hard to attain.

As information technology has improved, the medical industry’s ability to treat patients has increased significantly. Over the past decade, doctors and healthcare professionals have seen the rise of telemedicine. In the most basic terms, telemedicine refers to the capability of patients to consult with doctors using remote conferencing technology—that is, without the need for an in-person visit.

In conventional medicine, patients and doctors rarely discuss the details of a patient’s problem or specific treatments over the telephone. These discussions were almost always kept within the privacy of a hospital or a doctor’s office. The cost of healthcare in some countries is astronomically expensive. Millions of people worldwide cannot receive proper healthcare services because of the cost of the treatment. However, with high-speed internet video conferencing and online file-sharing technology, access to healthcare has become much more convenient and affordable because healthcare is provided from the patient’s home, and transportation and transfer expenses are eliminated (消除). An article written by the American Journal of Managed Care indicates that on average virtual appointments cost between $ 40 to $ 50, while in- person visits cost a whopping (巨大的) $ 179 on average. This makes telemedicine a more cost-effective option.

In addition to the positive economic benefits, for elderly patients, or those with mobility issues, telemedicine is a game changer. Health care is also no longer limited by the open hours at the local doctor’s office. With the globally connected internet, patients can contact a doctor anytime. They could as easily seek second opinions from doctors in other parts of the country or on the other side of the world, for that matter. What’s more, telemedicine reduces the risks of transmitting infectious diseases, In the past, people with symptoms such as flu, measles, etc., visited hospitals. As those diseases are contagious, other visitors and workers are at risk of being exposed to those diseases. This is where telemedicine can step in to prevent contagious diseases from spreading. Even better, telemedicine lowers the number of patients in hospitals, which frees up staff and resources for patients in urgent need.

For a glimpse of the future of telemedicine, consider the internet hospitals that have emerged in recent years, which offer medical consultations to users of online platforms. With the help of internet hospitals, users can schedule an appointment and have a high-quality video conference with a qualified and professional physician. Moreover, doctors can even prescribe and have medication online and have them shipped to the patients using express. Less than two decades ago, such convenient access to health care would have seemed unimaginable. However, it does have limitations, such as collecting fresh samples for medical tests and X-rays. While telemedicine can’t change the current health care overnight, it will be a part of the modem medical system.

28What are Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3 mainly about?

AThe cost of the healthcare. BThe advantages of telemedicine.

CThe privacy issue of the patients. DThe prevention of the contagious diseases.

29According to the passage, with telemedicine, patients       .

Apay the healthcare expense easily online

Bget access to different kinds of medical tests

Chave the risk of being affected by the diseases

Dget professional suggestions from doctors at home and abroad

30What can you learn from the passage?

AInternet hospitals will replace conventional hospitals in the future.

BTelemedicine’s existing problems are greater than the potential benefits.

CDoctors find telemedicine helpful for collecting fresh medical test samples.

DTelemedicine makes the medical service available from the comfort of home.

Your cat is probably keeping track of where you are, even if your feline (猫科的) friend isn’t in the same room with you and can’t see you.

Scientists recently learned that house cats create “mental maps” that tell them where nearby humans are located, based on where sounds are coming from. The researchers tested cats by playing recordings of human voices calling the cats’ names; they then played those recordings again, only this time through a speaker in a different place, so that the same sounds came from farther away. The cats acted surprised when the familiar voice came from a location that they didn’t expect, based on what they had already heard. This suggests that cats spatially (空间上) locate their unseen human companions using audio cues—a cognitive (认知) ability that was previously unknown in felines.

Knowing that something continues to exist even if it’s out of sight is called object permanence, and it’s a test that researchers use to measure animal intelligence. Human babies typically begin to develop object permanence when they’re around 8 months old, and this ability becomes more advanced when babies reach 10 to 12 months old; at that stage, babies can find hidden objects, and they begin to realize that their parents and caregivers don’t disappear just because they can’t be seen, a ccording to the Mayo Clinic.

In other studies, cats have also shown that they can distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar human voices and that they can orientate hidden objects. So “it seems reasonable that cats should be able to mentally map others’ locations based on sounds,” the scientists said in the study.

Being able to form a mental picture of the outside world “is an important feature in complex thinking,” and these findings put the study in a new light, which could inform future studies of feline cognition, the study authors concluded.

31How do house cats locate their human companions?

ABy tracking voices. BBy searching maps.

CBy observing behavior. DBy identifying recordings.

32Why does the writer mention human babies?

ATo better clarify cats’ cognitive ability.

BTo indicate the mental level of children.

CTo tell how to test cats’ cognitive ability.

DTo show how to develop babies’ intelligence.

33What does “orientate” underlined in paragraph 4 mean?

    AChoose. BRecord. CRecognize. DPosition.

34What do the study authors think of their findings?

AUseful for pet animal training. BHelpful for further studies on cats.

CNecessary for raising cats as pets. DImportant for mental research on cats.

    第三部分  书面表达(共两节,32分)

    第一节(共4小题;第4041题各2分,第423分,第435分,共12分)

    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。

One morning in 2007, Parthasarathy—we usually called him Partha—came to meet me. He was disabled and was not an engineer but had majored in a computer course in college. I told Partha, “I’d like to employ people like you.” In fact, it turned out to be the right decision to employ him. Partha had an amazing enthusiasm and his disability did not stop him from improving himself. I was not doing any charity by employing him because my company benefited more from Partha. I have realized that physically challenged people are more faithful than others but unfortunately we usually pay scant attention to them.

At that time our office was on the first floor and Partha had difficulty dealing with the stairs. Seeing him struggle, I decided to make the entire office disabled-friendly. Our ground floor is now intended for the disabled people, and we have special toilets for them. We have also built houses for them near the office so that they can avoid long travelling hours.

After meeting Partha, I decided to hire more disabled people. We waited six months to get another disabled person who then became our receptionist.

I don’t regard employing disabled people as charity. I consider it my responsibility. The country has spent much money educating me and I feel it is time for me to do something as a reward.

It is great to work with them. Seeing them work, get married, settle in life and have children is a wonderful experience.

We have 550 employees now, and 20 percent of them are disabled. We go to Engineering Colleges looking for disabled people but only to find one or two in each college. Parents don’t send them out. The biggest challenge for the physically disabled is the attitude of their parents, but we hire them even if they are not engineers.

40What kind of person was Partha? (No more than 10 words)

    ___________________________________________________________

41What does the underlined word “scant” in the 1st paragraph mean? (No more than 2 words)

    ___________________________________________________________

42Why is the ground floor intended for the disabled people? (No more than l2 words)

    ___________________________________________________________

43How many disabled workers are there in the writer’s company now? (No more than 2 words)
