My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So, when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day, my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

This Old Chair
“Mom! I’m home!” John slammed the door and dropped his books on a nearby chair.
“Hi, John, home already?” His mom turned around, “Spring is coming, and I am doing our annual spring cleaning. Come and help me, okay?”
“Okay, okay,” John agreed reluctantly.
They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Wearily pointing to Pop-Pop’s chair, which was faded and worn, John’s mom exclaimed, “Oh my! That old chair has got to go. We’ll buy Pop-Pop a new one. Let’s take the chair to the curb (马路边缘). Tomorrow the garbage truck is picking up on our block.”
As they attempted to move the chair, Pop-Pop, John’s grandpa, who lived with them since Grandma had died, worked his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly blocked their way. “Oh, no!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“It’s old. . . It’s worn. . . . ” John’s mom argued, a slight edge to her voice.
“No,” Pop-Pop persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
“But Pop, we’ll buy you a new one,” John’s mom tried to persuade the old man.
“I don’t want a new one,” Pop-Pop’s voice trembled.
“I give up.” John’s mom let go of the chair. “We’ll discuss it tonight when Matt gets home.”Matt, John’s dad, was still at work. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Pop-Pop, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked when his mother left the room. “It’s so old.”
“You don’t understand, John.” Pop-Pop shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. It was so long ago, but when I sit in this chair and close my eyes I feel she is near.” The old man tenderly stroked the arm of the chair.
It’s amazing, John thought, how Pop-Pop can remember things from the past. In the present, he forgets almost everything. John sat down on the floor by Pop-Pop’s feet and listened as the old man went on.

When Mark was five years old, his parents separated and he stayed with his mother.
As Mark grew up he occasionally (偶尔地) thought of the brief time he shared with his father and longed to see him again one day. However, as he grew into his late teens, thoughts of his father began to fade away.
After he graduated from college, Mark got married and one year later, had a boy. The years passed.
One day when Mark’s son was five years old and as Mark was preparing to shave his face, his son looked up at him and laughed, “Daddy, you look like a clown (小丑) with that cream on your face.”
Mark laughed, looked into the mirror and realized how much his son looked like him at that age. Later, he remembered that his mother said he had told his own father the same thing.
This event started him thinking about his own father a lot and he began asking his mother. It had been a long time since Mark had spoken of his father and his mother told him that it was now over twenty years since she had spoken to him. In addition, all her knowledge of his father stopped when Mark became eighteen.
Mark looked deep into his mother’s eyes and said, “I need to find my father.” His mother then told him that his dad’s relatives had all passed away, and she had no idea where to begin searching for him but added, “Maybe, just maybe, if you contact the United States Embassy in England, they might be able to help you.”
Even though the chances seemed slim, Mark was determined. The very next day, he made an overseas call to the American Embassy.
“U.S. Embassy, how may we help you?”
“Ahh...hi, my name is Mark Sullivan and I am hoping to find my father.”
There was a long pause and the ruffing of some papers,’ and then the man said:
“Is this Mr. Mark Joseph Sullivan?”
“Yes,” Mark answered anxiously.
They checked the birth place and date.

Being Planted
“106!” The cry of disappointment breaks the silence of the peaceful night.
In darkness, he stands still there, with tears dropping continuously from his eyes.
He is a 5th-year Ph.D.student majoring in biology. This is his 106th attempt to cultivate strawberries which could bear extreme climates. In his 105th experiment, he did all the pre-processes that he knew which could lead him closer to his goal. Every generation of the strawberry seemed to bring him closer to success, but every time the result was alike — failure, failure, failure. He has literally got used to it. But this time, he can hardly help feeling frustrated and angry.
“Who stole my experimental strawberry!”
Last night, when he got to the field, he was thrilled. Although most of the plants were obviously dying, one plant stood vigorously in the middle of the experimental field. The plant was labeled “Plant No. 106” . What a coincidence! In his 106th attempt, the 106th plant was finally mutating (变异) in its ideal way — the spark of hope, to him.
Last night, Plant No. 106’s fruit started to turn red. He was never so close to success. What he needed to do was to wait for several days to harvest that pink, shiny, attractive fruit.
But this night, the fruit disappears. So does his hope.
“3 years’ effort! 1096 days’ struggling! 13152 hours’ DNA editing and experiment. ALL GONE!” he murmurs to himself. He regrets that he didn’t get a small sample of the stolen strawberry last night.
Now he is using his fingers to dig the ground. He doesn’t know why he is doing so. He is well aware that the results of the past 106 attempts are all wasted because of the incident and his not taking the sample in time. He has no seeds left. At the present, he seems to have only 2 choices: to start from the very beginning, or to give up.

My stomach dropped as Mrs. Nelson said, “This is just a reminder that tomorrow is the Open Day!”
I hoped Mom to be free tomorrow so Dad would not have to come. What would people think of him? I put all negative thoughts aside with the determination that Mom would be able to come, and that was the end of it!
When arriving home, I walked in the kitchen and smelled fresh bread. It was one of Mom’s baking days! She greeted with her usual warmth, asking. “Well, hello there! How was your day?” “Nothing special. It was just another day,” I replied casually. Hearing this, her face showed her disappointment, but then here yes kept probing(探查) mine trying to read if I was being honest. It worked. She saw there was something on my mind. “Heidi, are you sure you have no news for me?” she continued.
I explained that tomorrow was the Open Day. And Dad was walking in the backdoor just in time to hear the news. I quickly asked Mom, “You are free, aren’t you?”
“Sorry dear, Ⅰ have made lots of arrangements for tomorrow. Maybe Dad will be willing to go.”
“Do you want me to come with you, Heidi?” Dad asked with a smile, “I would really love that!”
“Sure, Dad. That would be cool,” I said. But Dad really did not notice my lack of enthusiasm as his face brightened and he started talking about how much fun it was going to be.
I loved Dad’s optimism and enthusiasm. He had made life so exciting and adventurous for the family and I adored him for it. But would people see him the way I saw him? His thin body with practically bald(秃的) head was not exactly what my friends would consider a “cool dad”. Dad was also much older than most of my fiends’ parents. Their dads would be professional businessmen, doctors, dentists, or engineers. Dad was a draftsman(绘图员)and he worked in an office at home.

As an only child, Nicole Renae often felt lonely in her youth. But that all changed when she turned ten. For her birthday, her grandmother surprised her with an adorable puppy named Chloe.
From the very start, the two were inseparable. “She was my best friend,” Renae says. Every ounce of love Renae gave, the little dog returned tenfold. “She was such a sweet dog,” Renae says. “She’d lick your face forever if you didn’t stop her.”
But when Renae was 14, her father got a new job that came with a devastating caveat: He’d be working from home, and the house needed to be free of audible distractions. “Chloe was very yappy,” Renae says. “I was just a kid, so I didn’t have any choice in the matter. I didn’t want to get rid of my dog. I just felt so sick and sad about it.”
With no easier option, the family surrendered Chloe to a humane society. Though they were optimistic that the dog would find a new home with people who loved her, they couldn’t know for sure. “I called the humane society to try to find out what happened to her,” Renae says, “but they couldn’t tell me anything. So I never knew.”
In time, Renae grew up, got married, and had a child of her own. But her family didn’t feel quite complete. Remembering the joy that having a dog had brought her as a kid, Renae wanted her daughter to experience the same. She had it in her mind that she would adopt a puppy, but then one day she saw a post on Facebook about a senior dog that needed a new home. The dog in the photograph looked a lot like Chloe-she was even named Chloe. In an instant it was decided: She would adopt this older dog.

When school was over, the students were informed that there was no school on Monday-the Labor Day. “Enjoy your extra day off,” said the teacher. An extra day of fun suited Flora just fine. She loved breaks and expected to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Flora off, she ran into the house happily.
“How was school, Flora?” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday.”
“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Flora’s mom with a laugh.
Flora slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Flora enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketbal1 for several hours. Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Flora was so looking forward to. But Flora was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Flora that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Flora couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday, a day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Flora rubbed her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Flora, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on,” said Flora’s mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Flora asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Flora. It is,” replied her dad. “But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place.”

Dusty, the Wonder Dog
When I was a kid, my godparents, Uncle Nell and Aunt Frances, brought me a four-month-old puppy. She was half German shepherd, half collie. As her pink tongue tickled(挠痒)my face with wet licks,it was love at first hug.
My family named the puppy Dusty. Although I wanted to lay sole claim to her affection,in a family of seven kids, no one lays permanent claim to the family pet.
Dusty was our dog, not “my” dog. We soon realized that she had the patience of Buddha. My baby sister often transformed Dusty’s warm fur into a nap-time pillow-falling asleep on the rug. Like a protective mother, Dusty waited-without moving-until my sister woke.
Dusty doubled as a school crossing guard, too. Monday through Friday she’d walk us kids two blocks to St. Patrick’s Parochial, looking both ways to check for traffic before allowing us to cross the street. We’d wave good-bye as we entered the door, knowing Dusty would be waiting at the school door to claim us at the close of the school day.
Of all the contributions Dusty made to our family, one incident stands out far and above all others. Late one night Dusty rushed to my parents’ bedroom. She barked and barked. When she got no response, Dusty raced upstairs to my bedroom and my brothers’ bedroom and barked again and again. When she failed to fully wake us, she flew back down the steps and retimed to my parents’ room. Finally, she got Mom’s attention.
“What are you doing, Dusty?” Mom snapped, still halfway in dreamland. Dusty persisted. Finally my mother gave in. “Okay, what is it?”
Dusty whined(哀嚎)and rushed out of Mom’s room. Thinking the dog needed to be let out to relieve herself, my mother followed Dusty to the front door.
When Mom opened the door to let her out, Dusty tore across the street, not stopping to do her business as my mother had assumed. Then she discovered what Dusty already knew.

My adventure short story took place in Nepal, where I did the Mohare Danda Trek — which was no easy feat; however, in my opinion, it is truly one of the best hiking trails in the world. The Mohare Danda is one of Nepal’s newest treks, opened in 2010 as an Eco-trek to help support and develop the Parbat and Myagdi districts.
I’ve always enjoyed such kind of hikes as my friends and I conquer one destination after another. As you gaze upon the mountain peaks, interact with locals, and take in the nature that surrounds you, it’s hard not to feel immense gratitude for such adventures. This is particularly true when we reached the top of Mohare Danda at 3,313 meters (10,869feet) and realized just how far we’d come.
It was a stunning hike, though my first day got off to a difficult start as I found myself violently ill. Ascending(爬升)higher and higher, sweat pouring down my face and my backpack threatening to pull me to the ground, I stopped constantly to gasp for breath and throw up quite a bit — until we reached the high altitude tea house where we’d be staying the night. The accommodation was rough, to say the least, which was a small family-run hotel with squat toilets, spiders, and no showers.
While the group went in for tea, I laid on the ground, nearly crying from the physical pain from the challenging hike and discomfort from the sickness. At that moment, I truly didn’t think I could do it. But then I opened my eyes to the beauty that surrounded me— scattered wild flowers all over the mountains, feasting yaks and buffaloes, high-altitude villages and the stunning terrain of the Annapurna Himalayas, which were the type of beauty you truly can’t find anywhere else —and realized that if I gave up now I’d never forgive myself.
The hotel owner was very kind, who brought me warm water and some medicine. He also suggested that I bring some oxygen just in case, and I did so, which turned out to be life-saving.

Not too long ago, I was at the grocery store(杂货店), and an elderly man in front of me was using a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)card—what we used to call food stamps. The card reader kept rejecting his payment. He had apparently gone over his limit for the month. He was confused about how it had happened and more than a little distressed about the situation. While I was trying to decide if the man would be offended or grateful if I offered to step in and pay the difference(支付差额), the young man checking him out (who looked to still be in high school) said, “Sir, this happens all the time. It’s not a problem. I bet we can figure out a solution together.”
The line behind us was growing long, but the young man didn’t show an ounce of impatience or anger. He confirmed that the man was, indeed, over his limit for the month and found the amount of the overage. Turned out, he wasn’t over by much, so the checker helped the customer determine which two or three items that he could make do without until his account was replenished(重新装满). “You’ll definitely want to keep the milk and the butter and the eggs and the bread,” I remember him saying as he looked through the already bagged groceries. Then the clerk, who had clearly done this before, pulled out a jar of salsa, a bottle of juice and some crackers that he and his customer agreed could wait until the beginning of the new month. The young man assured his older customer, once again, that this was a common occurrence and not a problem at all. The man left with his dignity intact(完好无损)and, no doubt, with a renewed sense of loyalty to that grocery-store chain.

1.Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness. I increased my plant watering, and then decreased it. Still, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. The thought that I couldn’t even care for a simple plant started to haunt me like a shadow. For the past few months, a bond had been built between me and the plant. I couldn’t shake the feeling that if the plant died, I might too. Having seen through my heart and sensed my fear, my wife comforted me, “Honey, your treatment is working well and maybe the plant just needs its.” Her words did make sense and settled my nerves.
As I became less anxious, I began to search online for how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving its roots more room to grow and buried some solid plant nutrient under the top layer of the earth. Soon, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the tree with its shinny and lush leaves in its new pot, I make it a point to appreciate my wife and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will inspire my wife to live her life to the fullest.

The next morning, when John came downstairs, Pop-Pop stood by the window and looked outside. A tear rolled down his hollow cheek. John followed the old man’s gaze and froze. Snow-covered, the chair stood at the curb out on the street. The clamor of the garbage truck pulling up to the house shocked John into action. He ran outside. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted, flailing both arms in the air.
After rescuing the chair from the garbage men, John rushed to find his mom. “You can’t throw out his chair, Mom.” John swallowed hard before going on. “This is not just a chair. It has been with Pop-Pop for a very long time and is like a friend.” John’s mom turned and walked slowly towards Pop-Pop. “I’m sorry, Pop-Pop,” she said. “I guess I just didn’t realize how much the chair meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back inside.” They brushed off the snow with their hands and placed the chair next to the fireplace so it could dry. The living room became warm and bright again with this old chair.

It looks even more vigorous than No. 106 in this more rigid environment. It is obvious that this slowly-growing plant will bring out an even better experimental result than Plant No. 106. He names it Plant No. 106- 1.
He is so excited that he bursts into tears. If someone hadn’t stolen Plant N0. 106, if he hadn’t dug the soil after he thought he failed, he would miss this extraordinarily special seed. Everything is not only hopeful again, but becoming even better. Sometimes, we may find ourselves in darkness, feeling helpless and desperate, just like Plant No. 106- 1, just like “HE” . But never give in, for darkness may be temporary. Please be patient and hold your virtues of perseverance, for maybe “we” are just being planted.

5.Well, whether I liked it or not, the next morning came. I was feeling a bit worried but Dad seemed to have been well prepared. As I went out of my bedroom, he stood up, smiling from ear to ear. Obviously, my half smile didn't quite compare with his. On the way to school, in the car, Dad asked so many questions that I felt as if he were really questioning me. I knew he was doing his best to get a brief idea about my school life that he was about to see, though.
When we arrived, we walked into my class. Dad stood out visually, which was not quite beyond my expectation. As soon as he entered, he was making friends with children and parents. Then, he shared his stories. I looked around, checking my friends' expressions and reactions To my surprise, all of my classmates looked at Dad with such admiration. They told me the crazy stories in Dad's childhood were so cool. Not until then did I realize the things that would have embarrassed me most were indeed the same things that made me proud most!

Flora felt disappointed at her parents’ plan for the holiday. Turning a deaf ear to what they said, she stormed back into her room, slammed the door and flung herself on to the bed. “A holiday is a holiday,” she grumbled. Suddenly, the door swung open. Her mom walked up to herbed and said in an amiable voice, “Involving yourself in family affairs shows your capability of managing your life. And your participation means a lot to us.” Reluctant as she was, Flora picked up the mop to join them under her mom’s intense gaze.
Things began to change as she was doing the chores. Not until she sorted out the groceries did she realize things could be so neatly arranged and that cleaning the house could also clear her mind. Sunshine casting a warm glow on the tidy room, the mounting grievance in the morning eroded; giving way to a sense of achievement and satisfaction. “I’m sorry,” she apologized to her parents, “Now I know holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. However,my mother refused to take all the credit(赞扬).“It was Dusty,”she told the firefighters.“She saved them. Not me.” It was then that we see that the real hero was sitting beside me silently.I put my arms around her neck and kissed her square on the tip of her wet nose.“Thank you for saving Marianne,”I whispered into Dusty’s tan and black ear.“You’re the bravest dog I’ve ever known.” Dusty wagged her tail and licked my face. That old familiar rush of puppy love overtook me.I smiled and promised to let her sleep in my bed for the rest of her life.

9.In my hundreds of hiking trips, I have never experienced such a difficult situation as now. I have suffered from physical pain, and my willpower has gradually been worn away. However, the kindness of the hotel owner has made me feel like a spring breeze, which has further strengthened my determination to persist in hiking. After hearing that I wanted to continue, the boss and other people in the hotel expressed their support, but in order to ensure my safety, they were willing to continue with me, so we formed a small team and began to march towards the top of the mountain.
At this moment, the sun was falling, and the top of the mountain was golden under the rising sun. Looking at this beautiful scene, I suddenly felt that all the hardships I had experienced before had disappeared at this moment. I had achieved my goals and aspirations. Suddenly, I felt a bit dizzy. I staggered back for a moment, and supported me forcefully with both hands behind my back. I was the hotel owner, and perhaps there was nothing more satisfying for me than now. I had the sense of conquest to climb the top of the mountain, and the sense of fulfillment to be accompanied by friends. These are all my most precious assets.

10.When it was my turn, I told the young man that he had done an extraordinary job. The young man just smiled without stopping what he was doing and said, “That’s not a problem at all.” I looked at this man, whose face reddened but words revealed confidence. The composure he showed when facing the embarrassed old man surprised me, and what he did and said touched me deeply. His actions were so quick that I checked out instantly. Before walking out of the grocery store, I glanced back at the young man who was still standing there, treating each customer with absolute patience.
When I got home , I sent an e-mail to the manager of the store. In the e-mail, I talked about what I had met that day, and praised the young man’s behavior. When I wrote the e-mail, my mind wentback to the young man, straight back, warm smile. It was his carefulness and patience that made every customer’s heart have a glint of warmth. Suddenly I remembered a high school lesson: To reserve your patience towards everyone and to show kindness to those in need.
