It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51, a technology executive at a hospital, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 14-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which spans the shallow waters of Assa woman Bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the squeal of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror it crashed into a concrete barrier over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but a BMW car that had smashed into the guardrail on the right came sliding backward toward him. He turned left, but too late the BMW struck his Volvo’s fender before crashing into the vehicle behind him.
Bauer stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK? he asked, She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.
He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too shocked to speak. It came from the pickup, which had come to rest on its right side. The passenger at the back of the pickup and truck bed hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay.
The driver’s door threw open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground. Bauer ran up beside him. The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish.
In the water was a car seat. Moving next to it, a girl, about two years old.

Nine-year-old Dyami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees(棕榈树) with green coconuts (椰子)hanging from them. Dyami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
Grandpa had planted a few palm trees near the front door and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard.
One night, Dyami was awakened by a strange sound. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附着) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “ It’s an earthquake!” They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
However, there was a louder sound, the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising!” The villagers started running away from the beach. Dyami watched stupidly .
The waves were rising higher and higher. Dyami thought, “ How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared. Dyami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

    3.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
    LESSONS LEARNED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Mr. Gray was my history teacher in tenth grade. I couldn’t tell what kind of history he taught for two reasons: one, I never liked history, and two, my body was in class, but my mind wasn’t. Mr. Gray wasn’t the teacher who offered retakes (补考) on tests; he did so much more for me than that. He offered me a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on.
Before Mr. Gray came along, one major event was taking place in my life. My mom told me she wanted to divorce my dad. Why then? I didn’t understand. I barricaded (筑起壁垒) myself in my basement bedroom, listening to angry music and sleeping. I fell into a depression and my grades were falling. Then there was Mr. Gray.
I sat against a brick wall outside the library, knees pulled into my chest, head down, surrounded by my noisy friends that I was slowly distancing myself from, when I heard his voice: “Ever feel like you’re a fire hydrant (消防栓) and every dog in the neighborhood is stopping by to visit you?” I picked my head up and then I saw Mr. Gray.
I had heard him use this line in the classroom a few times before, when it looked like a kid was having a bad day. It usually aroused a laugh and ended there. This time was different though — he was waiting for an answer. Next thing I knew I was following him into the library.
We sat amongst the shelves of the mostly empty library for the rest of lunchtime. I don’t remember much about that first conversation other than the unconditional promise he made me of lending a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on. What made him such a special teacher was that he saw that I was struggling and reached out to me outside of the classroom.

    4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During last Christmas holiday, my wife, our three boys and I were in France on our way from Paris to Nice (尼斯). For five bad days everything had gone wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps”, our rented car broke down and we were all annoyed and exhausted in the crowded car. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dark and dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant roughly decorated for the holidays. In the corner, a piano player listlessly played Christmas music. I was too tired and miserable to leave. I looked around and noticed that the other customers were eating in stony silence. The only person who seemed happy was the American sailor. While eating he was writing a letter, and a half-smile covered his face.
My wife ordered our meal in French. The waiter brought us the wrong thing, so I scolded my wife for being stupid. She began to cry. The boys defended her, and I felt even worse. All of us were interrupted by an unpleasant strong movement of cold air. Through the front door came an old French flower woman, dressed in shabby clothes.
The young sailor finished his meal, got up and walked over to the flower woman. “Happy Christmas!” he said, smiling, and picking out two corsages (小花束). “How much are they?” he asked.
    “Two francs, sir.”
Pressing one of the small corsages flat, he put it into an envelope he was to send, then handed the woman a 20-franc note.
“I don’t have change, sir,” she said.

The teacher was new. She was a substitute(代替者). She wrote that word “Mugs”(马克杯)on the blackboard when she arrived. Today, she said we were making mugs for Mother’s Day. They were white and would say WORLD’S BEST MOM on the side. Some kids couldn’t read it, but I could. Dad had been teaching me. I could read The Magic School Bus by myself now.
When the new teacher tried to give me a mug, I told her I didn’t want one. Her eyes widened. “I’m sorry, what was your name?”
“Milo,” I told her, “and I don’t need a cup.”
“Why not, Milo?” she asked in confusion.
I was ready to say, “Because my mom doesn’t live with us anymore and she left two years ago. Dad said he doesn’t know where she is, so I won’t be able to give her a mug.” Speaking this, I thought of a day, a long time ago, when I was four. Mom came home from work and gave Dad a chocolate bar and me a doll. And Dad was confused because he and Mom had been mad at each other the day before. But he wasn’t mad any more because she gave him chocolate, I guess. He was happy and surprised and he picked Mom up and tried to spin(使旋转)her around but he almost dropped her and I fell off the couch because I was laughing so hard. What sweet memories! However, she left us. From then on, Dad and I lived with each other and he waited on me hand and foot.
Suddenly, a gentle touch on my hair called my mind back. “You can give it to your father as a gift,” the teacher said, looking at me gently. I stood in silence. And next to me, Amelia was already gluing pink flowers all over her mug, and I wanted to do that too, and it didn’t seem fair that she got a mug and a mom and I didn’t get either.

    The Circus
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. My family weren’t well off at that time, we can only come to see it once a year. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly discussing about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling in pride, looking back at her as if to reply, “You got that right.”
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady quoted the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to quiver (颤抖). The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. That price immediately threw him into low spirits.

It was an ordinary but unforgettable Saturday, and everything was nice and peaceful. The wind, soft but a little cool, clicked through tree branches and stirred the bushes. I was walking along the river, which is rushing and sparkling between green banks, and enjoying some hot chocolate with the sun shining down on me on this nice spring day. I was in the mood to do something nice for a stranger and started to look around for an opportunity to do a random act of kindness.
Two minutes later I was approached from across the pathway by a complete stranger. I wasn’t sure why he was approaching me, when from out of nowhere he started talking to me really rudely. I could tell he was probably drunk or high or who-knows-what, so I just stayed calm and kept walking ahead. There were hundreds of people sitting on benches nearby and walking along the South Bank with me, so I wasn’t really worried.
However, as I tried to walk along, he kept saying offensive things to me and trying to get my attention. I tried to change my course and he kept following me, coming closer each time, and just wouldn’t leave me alone. At one point, he literally cornered me near the rail next to the river at which point I got really scared and didn’t know what to do. Although there were people everywhere, I got worried that the bystander effect might kick in and nobody would do anything about what they were seeing. I was praying that one of the many people sitting on benches nearby who could hear everything and watched this whole episode unfold would be courageous enough to help me out of this situation. “What should I do? What should I do?” I was nearly sobbing.

When asked about why she chose to be a cadet (学员) firefighter, Ava Smith talked about her father’s action four months ago. “The girl he saved is going to live a whole life because of him. It’s incredible!” she said.
Jonathan Smith, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were driving on the 1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which spans (横跨) the shallow waters of Assawoman Bay.
Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the scream of tyres.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck (小卡车) was sliding from one lane to the other. It crashed into a barrier, turned around like endless, and came to rest hanging over the edge of the bridge. Smith hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but too late: he ran into a BMW directly ahead of him.
Smith stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was obviously shocked, but unhurt.
He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too terrified to speak.
And then another scream came from the pickup. The truck bed hung out past the railing (栏杆), about 10 meters above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door was pushed open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then ran to the railing. The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish to Smith. In the water was a car seat. Next to it was a girl, about two years old: pink dress, brown hair, brown eyes, floating on her back, kicking and shouting.

On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’ re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today. ” My heart sank. I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed each price tag. “Is everything OK?” Kristil asked. “You seem worried.” “I got some bad news yesterday. I lost my job”, I told her. “Oh no,” Kristil said. “Well, I have $50 from Grandma, and I can give you.” Absolutely not,” I told her. Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my moneymaking pursuits. I sold a precious cup at an antique store, washed dishes in a restaurant and ended the day $120 richer. Over the next week, I furiously applied for jobs as my bank account became smaller. I felt as if the world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home defeated. Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing on and of all morning. I noticed a thin woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Sister Esther Heffernan whom I hadn’t seen since we’d met for lunch three months ago. It soon dragged me to the cherished days when I first met Sister Esther 10 years ago as her student at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. Sister Esther was understanding, loving and patient. Even after I graduated, Sister Esther kept in touch. I had grown to love her like family.

    Getting It Right
On the April morning I found out about Lucy’s mother—Mrs. Hastings, it rained. A light, cooling sprinkle of tears that grayed the Texas sky. I didn’t know what kind of cancer Mrs. Hastings had until later, but I knew her condition was serious—very serious.
I love Mr. and Mrs. Hastings almost as much as I love my own parents, and Lucy is my best friend. But I didn’t want to go to school that day. And I sure didn’t want to see Lucy.
What could I possibly say to her? What do people say to their friends at such a time? I tried every trick I knew to get out of going to school. But Mom insisted.
“You have a history test this morning, Kristin,“ she said, looking at me as if she’d crawled into my mind and knew I was just making excuses. Then she smiled. “Be sure to stay close to Lucy, especially today, because that poor girl is going to need your strength.
Strength? What was Mother talking about? I had no strength. I didn’t even know what to say to my best friend. I hid out in the choir room between classes in hopes of avoiding Lucy, but she was never out of my thoughts. I kept trying to come up with something appropriate to say to her because I really wanted to get it right.
Lucy and I had last- period English in Mrs.Green’s room. I’d avoided her all day, I was going to have to face her last period, and I still didn’t have a plan. However, I worried needlessly because Lucy never showed up for class. When English class was over, Mrs. Green said, ”Kristin, Lucy Hastings is your best friend, and she is coming here in a few minutes to get her lesson assignments."
My heart tightened into a hard knot and I trembled inwardly. I still didn’t know what to say to Lucy, and time was running out.
    注意:续写词数应为150左右。
I ran out of the classroom, racing down the hall and out the front door of school.

As I drew nearer to her, my throat tightened, making it impossible to speak.

    3.Possible version:
However, that didn’t change our classroom relationship. Every time he noticed my mind was wandering, he would call on me, trying to draw my attention back. Unsurprisingly, I still distanced myself from classmates. I still didn’t know most of the answers. But I think he knew that I was at a crossroads. Apparently, my problem needed to be addressed first outside the classroom and then in class.
More lunchtime library conversations followed throughout the school year. They always made me feel freer and I didn’t feel trapped like before. Mr. Gray who was always there unconditionally, presented me with an outlet for my pain and frustration. His presence and life wisdom enabled me to become less defensive and open up more. Gradually, the hours spent amongst the library shelves became my favorite time to take his “class”. Little as I remembered about what he taught in the history class, the lessons learned outside the classroom would never fade away.

My wife waved her corsage to the music with a delighted smile. Amazed and ashamed, I didn’t respond to the young man in time. Music echoing off the restaurant, the sailor’s smile flooded back. Thanks to the sailor, it was he who released the love and joy that had been replaced within us by anger and disappointment. He gave us a wonderful and warm Christmas which was like a shining star on our journey home.

5.I looked back at the teacher and took a mug out of her hands and said, “OK”. Back to my seat, I began to decorate it with concentration. On it I painted “my father teaching me how to read”. Also, I decorated my mug with fourteen pink flowers, and Amelia only put on nine. Staring at my masterpiece, I wondered how my father would react when seeing the mug. However, I decided not to give it to him immediately I saw him because I remember how much he loved surprises. I would give him a big surprise.
So when Dad picked me up after school, I hid the mug at the bottom of my backpack. Not until we returned home, did I put it on the table in the kitchen and hid behind the door. When he went to get a snack, he spotted the mug, his eyes wide open. “What's this thing, Milo?” I stepped out and explained softly, “It's a Mother's Day mug. It's for you.” I could clearly see the amazement on his face. Dad embraced me tightly, words failing him. Through the window, the setting sun cast a golden glow on us, warm and deep.

My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man knew what was going on. He certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking, embarrassing situation. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.” My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn’t go to the circus that night, but we didn’t go without.

7.At this moment, a couple, probably my parents age, passed by me. They had seen everything happen. The lady came along and linked her arm into mine, saying “Dear, why don’t you come with us?” and started walking me away from the guy. The guy started swearing and getting angry, while this sweet lady was comforting me, saying “Don’t worry.” They pretended to know me before. They had daily communication with me like old friends.
Finally, the drunk man left, still saying something in his mouth. She said, “You’d better carry on walking where you were going and we’ll make sure he goes the other way.” As I rushed away, I was shaken up, but at the same time had feelings of appreciation for that couple. I started with the purpose of doing a random act of kindness. Instead, I ended up on the receiving end. One thing is for certain though — it is equally important to learn how to receive and to feel grateful for the kindness of others.

    Para 1
“Ava!” Smith yelled, removing his shoes. “Stay by the car!” Climbing onto the railing, he eyed the shallow water. “Better less than 3 feet deep.” he thought to himself. As if mustering up all his courage, Smith jumped off with belly down. A moment later, he was bouncing off the sandy bottom and luckily, unhurt! The little girl was less than 1 meter away. Smith swam to her in a few quick strokes and lifted her out of the water: mouth half open, eyes nearly closed, not breathing. “Come on, stay with me!” A sense of panic crept over this middle-aged man. Seconds later, composing his thoughts, Smith recalled the first aid measures learned years ago.
    Para 2
Standing, he laid her against his shoulder and beat her back hard. Some water came streaming down the baby’s mouth. But still no breath. Another whack on the back and then Smith felt the little fingers gripping him around the neck. Her eyes were opened now. Smith hugged her to shield her from the cold. Just then a family on a small boat pulled up and took Smith and the little girl to the waiting ambulance near a dock. The toddler suffered a broken shoulder but was otherwise uninjured. However, on seeing Ava, Smith hugged her tighter than ever. When interviewed later, Smith admitted the fear flashing across his mind but the desire to save a life took the upper hand. That heroic deed not only kept one girl from dying, but fueled the passion of another girl.

9.I rushed to the front of my building. “What are you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged. “I tried to call but couldn't get through, so I thought I would come by,” Sister Esther said. “I have a couple of gifts for you and Kristil.” I made her a cup of tea, and we talked. As she got up to leave, she handed me a Christmas card. “This is for you,” she said as she kissed me on the cheek. I walked her to her car and waved as she pulled away.
As she left, I opened the Christmas card and an envelope fell. As I opened it, I saw there was money inside. I gasped in shock. Hundred-dollar bills poured onto the table. Tears of gratitude puddled in my eyes as I counted the money. Sister Esther had given me $1,000. I silently thanked Sister Esther in my heart. 10.
I ran out of the classroom, racing down the hall and out the front door of school. I was so nervous to see her. I told myself to calm down and thought about what my mother had told me this morning. I said to myself, “I am her best friend. Encouraging her to face her mother’s illness bravely is what I should do.” I wrote down the words which I wanted to say, hoping my letter would comfort her and give her courage. After finishing the letter, a familiar figure came into my sight. That was Lucy. I ran to her immediately.
As I drew nearer to her, my throat tightened, making it impossible to speak. Lucy looked at me and tears dropped from her eyes. I hugged her and summoned up the courage to say, “I am sorry to know your mother’s illness. Remember whenever you need help, I will be your side. Be brave and don’t let your mother down.” Then I handed my letter to her. Lucy took over it and held my hand tightly.
