I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a good sprinter (短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. Before the sports meet, I had put in a lot of hard work and dedication during the training sessions. I woke up early every morning to go for runs and did countless drills to improve my technique. My teammates and I supported and encouraged each other during training, pushing ourselves to do better and achieve our goals.
The meet lasted two days, I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. Large tents were provided for the young competitors on one side of the track. Despite being assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track, I made the best of the situation by decorating it with our school colors and creating a supportive atmosphere.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched nervously and excitedly as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting. and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there.”
“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowden, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I'm glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaica. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere.” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes. Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up and seemed to understand what Miss Snowden meant.

One New Year’s morning, as we came down to breakfast, with very shiny faces and spendy aprons(围裙), we surprisingly found father alone in the dining room.
“Happy New Year. Papa! Where is Mother?” we cried.
“A little boy came begging and said they were starving at home. so your mother went to see and ah, here she is.”
As Papa spoke, in came Mamma, looking very cold, rather sad, and very much excited. Not far away from here, lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children are hud-dled(挤在一起)into one bed to keep from freezing for they have no fire. There is nothing to eat over there, and the oldest boy came here to tell me they were starving on this bitterly cold day. “My little girls, will you givc them your breakfast, as a New Year’s gift?”
We sat silent a minute and looked at the nice, hot porridge(粥), creamy milk, and good bread and butter; for we were brought up like English children, and never drank tea or coffee, or ate anything but porridge for our breakfast.
“I wish we’d eaten it up,” thought I for I was rather a selfish child, and very hungry.
“May I go and help carry it to the poor, little children?” asked Beth, who had the tende-rest heart that ever beat under a spendy apron.
“1 can carry that little pot,” said little May, proudly giving the thing she loved best.
“And I shall take all the porridge,” I burst in, heartily ashamed of my first feeling.
“You shall put on your things and help me, and when we come back, we’ll get something to eat,” said Mother, beginning to pile the bread and butter into a big basket.

Have you ever noticed how certain smells can call up particular emotions or memories? A whiff of perfume(一阵香水味)or after-shave recalls a favorite person; the delicious smell of warm bread tickles the taste buds(味蕾).
Think about newly cut grass or how the air smells after a thunderstorm. Burning leaves on fresh and cold fall days always remind me of the football at the weekend. Perhaps the smells that surround Christmas carry the most memories. The fresh green smell of pine trees; the fragrances of a variety of food, especially the ones given off by cookies being baked in an oven and hot chocolate. Moreover, the scent of wood smoke around the burning fire can also bring warmth and the comfortable feeling to our mind. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.
But the smell I associate best with Christmas and winter is a wet dog. Our dog was mostly an outdoor dog and was often wet completely in the rain. We tried to dry him off as soon as he came in, grabbing the old, dirty towel by the door. He usually shook himself before we could catch him. The walls of the back entry were always spotted with brown mud all winter. We brushed him regularly in spring and summer when winter fur fell out by handfuls, but baths were rare. So, of course, his smell built up over time. Try as we might, we never could completely get rid of that smell. It lay hidden deep in his fur and skin.
The distinctive smell of the wet dog was a reminder of the Christmas vacation when I was twelve, and the cousins from Ohio were visiting. We had gotten shiny, slippery flying saucers as gifts and were also blessed with fresh snow. The four of us spent as much time as possible sliding down the short hill to the pond. Naturally, we tested the ice on the pond before sliding the first day, and we knew we could slide across it and lengthen our ride.

Since I began introducing animals into my child psychotherapy(心理治疗) practice fifteen years ago, my life as a doctor has been full of wonders. Animals always help me in my work communicating with children in need.
Diane, a dark-haired five-year-old, came to me with a problem. Although she was a chatterbox(话匣子) in the house and with her family, no one had ever heard Diane say a word outside her home environment. Not one word. Diane’s parents tried to work with her to overcome her selective mutism(缄默症). Yet nothing they did seemed to make any impression on her. Diane refused to talk when she was outside her family circle.
Diane’s parents contacted me and I agreed to see her. It was a Friday afternoon. They were seated in the waiting room when my six-year-old dog, Puppy, and I walked out to greet them. Diane sat with her head down, making no move to look up or acknowledge our entrance.
Puppy went straight towards Diane. Because Diane’s head was bowed, Puppy was just three feet from Diane when the girl finally caught sight of her. Startled by the unexpected sight of a large golden dog, the girl’s eyes became huge and then her mouth curved slowly into a smile. Puppy stopped directly in front of Diane and laid her head in the girl’s lap.
I introduced myself and Puppy, but Diane didn’t respond. Instead, she began to silently pet Puppy’s head, running her hands softly over Puppy’s ears and nose. She was still obviously nervous at my office, but she was smiling and seemed to be enjoying her interaction with Puppy. I was speaking quietly with Diane’s parents when an idea hit me.
I spoke Puppy’s name quietly and gave her a hand signal to come toward me and continue back into the inner office. Puppy immediately started walking toward me. As Puppy walked away, I watched Diane’s face fall and her eyes take on a sad and disappointed look. I said, “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you wanted Puppy to stay with you. All you have to do for her to come back is say, ‘Puppy, come.’”

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible during the rest of that school year.
Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year. Rita, a kind and quiet girl, had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children thought Rita would be given the best job. But there was a big surprise. Each child received a normal job like preparing the computer for lessons, cleaning the blackboard, or looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed. With tears welling up in her eyes, she stood up and asked why she was given such an insignificant task.
The teacher hugged her, kissed her on her forehead and said, “If you can take good care of the ant, you are sure to win a reward. After all, you have to do what are apparently the smallest tasks before being given the most important ones. I believe you can make it.” Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They said it was unfair for her.
However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest. “I will turn this little task into something great,”Rita said to herself. So, Rita started investigating everything about her little ant, modified the little box to make it perfect for the ant and gave the ant the best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had expected.
One day in spring, the classroom door opened and in came a man, who looked very important. The teacher interrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez, an entomologist (昆虫学家) from Florida Natural Reserve. He has something special to announce.

The Ex-footballer
My parents don’t see football as a profession. They think I should be an engineer, a doctor or an economist. It took me a good while to eventually persuade them to buy me a new football shirt for the school matches. My old shirt had worn out and made me depressed every time I put it on. But now I had a brand new shirt! I decided to wear it today for the first time during a kick-about in our street. But as soon as we had been playing for ten minutes, the shirt sleeve (袖子) was torn when I made a turn.
I didn’t pay much attention to it at first. I thought I would sew it back together after the match. But then I noticed that the whole sleeve was torn. Only a professional could mend it now. I couldn’t tell my mum and dad that my new football shirt was ruined. I needed a tailor. As I walked home, feeling totally at a loss what to do, I was surprised to suddenly come across a shop sign—“All kinds of repairs and services!”
I went inside immediately. Looking around the shop, I saw an iron (熨斗), broken toys and a broken chair. I guessed this was the wrong place and stood there, mind blank. At that time, a man with white hair came over warmly, “Welcome! Anything needs repairing?”
I showed him the shirt and expressed my request with great care, putting my fingers through the tear in the sleeve. To my disappointment, he told me that since he opened this shop, he had repaired many things except a football shirt. But he admitted he had been waiting so long to repair a football shirt.
What he said made me hesitate. Should I count on such a green hand? I was worried he would make it worse. After all, it was new, and my parents wouldn’t buy me a new one.

Mrowwwwl! The cat meowed angrily as she clawed at Jennifer’s arm, drawing a thin line of blood. Just as quickly as she struck out with her claw, the agile (灵活的) orange and-white cat leaped back to her hiding space under Jennifer’s bed. From the Avec underneath the bed, two green eyes produced bright light, staring back out at Jennifer.
Jennifer was starting to feel discouraged in a major way. She was never one for giving up; but it had been sevetal days like this since she adopted the cat—Darla—from the animal shelter, struggling to win over the young cat’s affection through treats and soft and gentle whispers. It was during her summer break, so she had plenty of time to keep trying to win over the animal. But it wasn’t time that was the issue — it was Jennifer’s emotions that were quickly fading.
It had been two years since Jennifer’s beloved brown tabby (斑猫)-Marlin-passed away. She never could quite get over the shock and emptiness which remained in her heart here childlike joy once thrived. Marlin had been Jennifer’s faithful friend and loving companion rough all the pains and trials of growing up. After Marlin died, things were never quite the same again for Jennifer. It was the first real death to pierce Jennifer’s heart and signaled the end of her carefree childhood.
She desperately wanted Darla to love her the way Marlin had and for ee to love Darla just the same; but what was Jennifer supposed to do now? The cut on her arm was all she had to how for her effort. I was 400 meters from the finish line when my legs stopped working during the State cross-country race. In a moment faster than I could imagine, I watched my dreams crash helplessly to the ground. Lifting my face from the dirt, I looked up and saw my dad’s face.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was proud of my success in running.
He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a dream passed on from one generation to the next.
I’ll never forget that day. It was hotter than normal — too hot, I waited for the gun to fire. This was the day we had waited so long for. I glanced at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from school came into my view. They had come for me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement appeared on his face. Adrenaline (肾上腺素) flowed through my body, and the race began.
For the first 2.5 miles, I felt great. I’d never been so ready for something. Determination focused my mind and guided my steps. As in all of my races, I didn’t star out in the front. I loved the feeling of passing people as my endurance (耐力) overtook their premature speed.
Without warning, my strength began to disappear. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet became stuck. I still don’t know what happened in those last few moments. Neck and neck with my greatest competitors, I could see the finish line, but nothing I could do would make my legs hold my weight. They were as weak as cotton.

For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old cat, is a homebody- and for good reason. But on November 6th, Bushong, his owner, spotted Hank resting on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.
Bushong believed Hank got frightened by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed. “Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).
Bushong then asked the HRA to help, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help because of safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance. Next she reached out to a local tree company, Casey Trees. But the crew said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree. Bushong became very sad.
Then neighbors came to help. Ed Baptiste, whose tree Hank had climbed, let Bushong sit in his backyard and called to Hank. Another neighbor donated a can of fish, hoping it might attract the cat to come down. Nearby dog owners took their pets on walks instead of letting them out in their yards to avoid further frightening Hank. Another neighbor suggested Bushong call a local business, which had a tall ladder. Unfortunately, their 42-foot ladder proved too short.
By day five, nothing had worked. That’s w hen another neighbor suggested creating a pulley(滑轮) system by throwing a sandbag attached to the rope to a branch higher than Hank. It will form a pulley system as the sandbag hangs down by gravity. Then raise a basket with some of the owners’ personal items. The cat may be attracted by the familiar scents and climb into the basket.

I was in about 40 feet of water all by myself. I knew I should not have gone alone, but I was rather competent and just took a chance. There was not much current, and the water was so warm, clear and attractive. When I got a cramp (抽筋), I realized at once how foolish I was. I was not too alarmed, but was completely doubled up with stomach cramps. I tried to remove my weight belt, but I was so doubled up I could not get to the catch. I was sinking and began to feel more frightened, unable to move. I could see my watch and knew there was only a little more time on the tank before I would be out of air. I tried to massage (按摩) my stomach. I wasn’t wearing a wet suit, but couldn’t straighten out and couldn’t get to the cramped muscles with my hands. I thought, “I can’t go like this! I have things to do!” I just couldn’t die this way with no one to even know what happened to me. I called out in my mind, “Somebody, something, help me!”
I was not prepared for what happened. Suddenly I felt a push from behind me under the arm. I thought, “Oh no, sharks!” I felt real fear and desperate. But my arm was being lifted forcefully. Around into my field of vision came an eye — the most extraordinary eye I could ever imagine. It was smiling. It was the eye of a big dolphin. Looking into that eye, I knew I was safe. I was flooded with relief. I felt that the animal was comforting me as well as lifting me toward the surface. My stomach cramps went away and I relaxed with security.
At the surface it drew me all the way into shore. It took me into water so shallow that I began to be concerned that it might be beached, and I pushed it back a little deeper, where it waited, watching me, I guess to see if I was all right.

My best friend Carla Hernandez called me on Thursday afternoon. “Daniel, meet me in the park near the playground in five minutes. I have a great idea!” This worried me because Carla’s great ideas almost always meant big trouble for me!
I dashed outside and jogged to the park. When I saw Carla, my heart sank because her large dog Perro was with her. I liked everything about Carla except Perro. I had never had a pet in my house, and I felt uncomfortable and nervous around animals. But I was embarrassed to say I was afraid of Carla’s dog.
Upon my arrival, Carla smiled in a joyful voice. “Isn’t this the perfect location for a pet show?” I was surprised at her words. Carla explained to me that all the kids in the neighborhood could show off their pets’ talents and demonstrated the things they did well. Besides, there were plenty of comfortable benches for our parents and friends to sit on as audience. Carla added that I could be the announcer since I didn’t have a pet for the show. What she said directly affected my mood because crowds always made me nervous and unsure. Looking into her eyes, I apologized, “I’m sorry, but that’s impossible! Besides, I don’t like animals, remember?”
“That’s nonsense,” said Carla. “There’s nothing to be concerned about because you’ll be great! ”Just at that time, Perro leaped up, slobbered all over me, and almost knocked me down.“ Yuck. Down, Perro! Stay! ”I shouted. Perro sat as still as a statue.“ Wow, you’re good at that, ”Carla raised her voice excitedly. "Now let’s get started because we have a lot to do.”
With her encouragement, I decided to have a try. After going back home, I couldn’t wait to practise announcing each pet’s act. By Saturday morning I had practiced hundreds of times. However, my stomach was doing flip flops by the time the audience arrived at the park. The size of the crowd made me feel even more anxious.

1.One possible version:
My turn arrived and I took the baton (接力棒) cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. Then disaster struck! I saw a boy run across the track into my path out of nowhere. I couldn’t get away from him fast enough. We were sent somersaulting over him after colliding with a crunch. Because I was young and agile, I was able to quickly pick myself up and continue the race. However, the collision cost us valuable time. I handed the baton to the next runner. I knew everything was lost when he ran with all his might, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
As a result, I left the meet empty-handed. As a result, we just assumed it was bad luck. I, for one, felt terrible for letting the team down, but what was done was done, and we had no choice but to accept it. Anyway, it had been an eventful but unsatisfying day for me. And I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them, and I am grateful for the lessons.

At this moment, Jeremy was walking by and saw them. Noticing Tamika’s teary eyes, Jeremy swallowed what he’d intended to say. A sense of guilt seized him and he stood there, frozen. Miss Snowden smiled and encouraged him, “An apology never comes late.” Jeremy raised his eyebrows and said in a low voice, “I shouldn’t have said that. Sorry.” Tamika looked down at her skates, wiped her tears and murmured, “Actually, that’s OK. It’s my skates”, spinning the loose wheel.
“I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Grabbing her skates, Jeremy tightened the screws in no time. He looked up brightly and handed the skates to Tamika. Tamika tried her skates and surprisingly they were working well. A slight smile lifted, “Thanks”. Jeremy felt a wave of relief flooding into his heart. “I help my dad fix things all the time. You know, I didn’t go anywhere either this summer.” he said. Then they three looked at each other and burst into laughter. Truly, they did not have to travel far to learn anything new.

We were soon ready and set out. Mother led the way, carrying the basket of bread and butter, while we followed with our breakfast. I walked behind, feeling ashamed for my selfish thoughts earlier. Arriving at the poor woman’s home, we’re met with six children huddled together in one bed. Mother quickly set to work, warming the porridge on the stove while Beth and May helped to give away the bread and butter. I watched as they eagerly ate the food, their eyes shining with gratitude.
As we made our way back home, I felt a sense of warmth in my heart. From that day forward, I knew that I would always try hard to help those in need, no matter how small the gesture is. And as we sat down to our own breakfast that day, I felt truly grateful for all that we had, and for the opportunity to give to those who had so little. Giving was far more important than taking, which made the biggest difference in people’s lives.

4.On the third day, we were so eager to play that we did not check it. A few degrees of warmth added a small layer of water to our slide, increasing our speed and excitement. My brother Peter
slid happily and rapidly down the hill and on to the pond. Seconds later, he was struggling in the
icy water. Peter was only eight and not a good swimmer, especially wrapped in a heavy winter
coat and boots. It happened all of a sudden and made us all in panic and scream.
I stepped down the bank carefully to reach him, but the dog was faster. He jumped into the
water, grabbed Peter by his ailing hand, and pulled him to shore. The cousins and I were able to
finish pulling Peter out of the frigid water. You can guess the rest of the story. We managed to
wrap Peter in our coats and get him back up the hill to the house in record time. Sipping cocoa by
the heater, we patted and hugged that wet dog. The dog took all day to dry out. His wet dog smell
lingered longer and returned often, reminding us of his heroics and our own Christmas miracle.

5.Diane’s parents stared at me, their expressions skeptical. For a few tense seconds, Diane sat debating what to do, her lower lip quivering. Then, in a soft voice, she called, “Puppy, come; please come, Puppy.” Her parents’ gaze flew to their daughter and their jaws dropped in astonishment. I gave Puppy the signal to go and she whirled around and ran over to Diane who slid off her chair to the floor, and kneeling, hugged Puppy tightly around the neck. We watched, Diane’s parents in tears, as Diane and Puppy snuggled happily together.
I knew that I had to seize the moment. Sitting on the floor beside Puppy and Diane, I tried to engage Diane in conversation. Hoping to keep the miracle going, I asked her what she liked about Puppy. She hesitated momentarily and then replied, “She is soft and funny.” As we talked, Puppy sat leaning against Diane, the little girl’s fingers laced through Puppy’s fur. As the session drew to a close, Diane embraced Puppy again and said, “Good-bye.” Her voice was soft yet clear. I was deeply pleased as she had made a remarkable breakthrough. And it was all thanks to Puppy, who had worked her magic again.

6.All the students looked at the doctor with curiosity. The doctor greeted the class with a satisfied look and announced. “Congratulations! Your class has been chosen to go along with me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rainforest, where we will be investigating all kinds of insects.” At the sight of the puzzled students, he explained, “Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant given to you. You’ve won the competition!” Wonderful news, indeed!
Hearing the good news, the whole class was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone understood why the teacher had insisted that the ant was a special one. They thanked the teacher for thinking of entering them in the competition, and thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And they also learnt that to be given the most important tasks, you have to know how to be responsible even in what are apparently the smallest tasks. The tailor seemed to understand what I was thinking at the moment. “Do you trust football, young man?” I nodded. He pointed to a shelf lined with footballs. “I like collecting discarded footballs. Repairing a football is quite healing. Sewing one is as challenging as playing it, for every stitch counts. Now, would you…” I handed him my shirt. He examined the tear and started his work professionally. While mending, he asked about my favorite footballer, and the pleasant chat perfected the repairing.
Suddenly, I noticed a photo of a football team next to the sewing machine. Flashing a knowing smile, he explained it was a long time ago, when he was the captain and when he did not undergo the operation that stopped his dream. His story just pushed me to speak out mine. He told me to pursue my dream and act like my idol, Messi—“the smallest player on the pitch but the greatest player of our time”. I thanked him, saying that not only did he mend my shirt with his craftsmanship but he also repaired my dream with sportsmanship. Giggling, he exclaimed, “Told you! After a few minutes, Jennifer noticed a strange feeling—fur. It was Darla brushing up against her face. A wave of warmth surged over Jennifer’s heart. She raised her head and found the little cat staring into her eyes, meowing gently, as if she sensed Jennifer’s pain and came to apologize. Jennifer’s tears dried out and her heart was healed by the little creature’s company. Then, a thought suddenly came to her that Darla was not the one in need of comfort, but she was.
Jennifer then reached out her hand toward the cat. Darla, suddenly aware of the hand’s presence, moved back to eye the hand cautiously, for quite a while. Then she made an attempt to approach very slowly, and finally pushed her head against the palm of Jennifer’s hand. Jennifer responded by stroking her softly, and the cat accepted. My eyes searched the crowd for my dad. Although my coach and teammates rushed to me, offering encouragement, there was only one person I wanted to talk to. As he pushed his way to me, with tears and sweat streaming down my face, I whispered, “I’m so sorry, Dad. I disappointed you.”
My dad looked at me and said, “You could never disappoint me.” Trembling, I said, “But we worked so hard. What about our dream?” Reaching over for my hand, he said, “All that matters is that you did your best. Don’t you know you make my dream come true?” All of a sudden, the world became still. I adjusted my running shoes and began to run, eventually winning the second place. All along, I thought my dad was running after a dream. What I realized, though, was that he was running after me. Bushong decided to have a try. She filled a small basket with some of Hank’s favourite things. She called it Hank’s party pack. With the help of volunteers from Casey Trees, they used a special equipment and shot a sandbag attached to a rope high into the tree. They got lucky on the first try. The rope caught a branch directly above Hank. Pulling on the other end of the rope, they positioned Hank’s party pack just beneath him. To their great delight, he jumped in.
Carefully, they lowered Hank down. Once Hank reached the ground, Bushong took Hank into her arms, hugging him hard. Afterward, they went inside and ate, and Hank rested in his favourite chair. Hank’s adventure taught Bushong a lesson about neighbors helping neighbors. “I can’t believe so many people went out of their way to help me with this cat,” she said. “It made me feel good that I live in a neighborhood where people would do whatever they could to get him down.

Jennifer sat on the floor, burying her face in her hands, and her body trembled as she softly began to cry.

4.On the third day, we were so eager to play that we did not check it. A few degrees of warmth added a small layer of water to our slide, increasing our speed and excitement. My brother Peter
slid happily and rapidly down the hill and on to the pond. Seconds later, he was struggling in the

coat and boots. It happened all of a sudden and made us all in panic and scream.
I stepped down the bank carefully to reach him, but the dog was faster. He jumped into the

finish pulling Peter out of the frigid water. You can guess the rest of the story. We managed to
wrap Peter in our coats and get him back up the hill to the house in record time. Sipping cocoa by

lingered longer and returned often, reminding us of his heroics and our own Christmas miracle.

All kinds of repairs and services!”
