Leather-making in Florence dates back hundreds of years to the 13th century. A look at leather craftsmen in Florence will help you know more about Italian leather.
The leather factory-Pierotucci
Join a free tour of the factory and you’ll get a deep dive into the process of making a handbag. After seeing what it takes to make a bag by hand, you’ll no longer wonder why Pierotucci prices come with two zeros at the end. And you’ll know that if you do spend the money, the bag will last forever
The leather shoe store-Stefano Bemer
Stefano Bemer was famous for its hand-tailored shoes. The elegant store that sells shoes that cost hundreds, and in some cases thousands,of dollars is also where apprentices(学徒)learn their skills: visible in the front section of the store.
The leather school-Scuola del Cuoio
Walking into the courtyard of the Scuola del Cuoio feels a little like walking onto a mini college campus. You leave the busy street as you enter the historic building. The school specializes in making one-of-a-kind bags and in teaching paying students the secrets of high-quality leather working.
The bookbinding(书籍装订)store-Il Torchio
Il Torchio is a beautiful bookbinding store run by Erin Ciulla. If you ask Ciulla, she might take you to see the “guillotine”, which is actually a very large, antique-looking machine that’s used to cut large amounts of paper. Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her window and shouted, “I’m driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?” The man looked to be in his 60s. He was heavyset, balding, and missing a few teeth. He laughed, then paused. “Actually,” he said, “I have a funeral to go. I was really hoping to get a haircut.”
Few minutes later, the man, named Edward, took a seat on a red chair moved down from Steller’s car, and she trimmed (修剪) his curly graying hair. He told her about growing up in Mississippi, about moving to Minnesota to be closer to his children, and how he still often phoned his mom. After Steller was done, Edward looked in a mirror. “Wow, I look good!” he smiled.
To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. She is keenly aware of the power of her cleanup job. “It’s more than a haircut,” she says.
Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. One changed hers. As a teen, she suffered from a severe bowel disease and her hair thinned drastically. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut.
“To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone,” she says. After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon (美发厅). Soon after finishing cosmetology (美容) school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets.
“Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely people looked,” she says. “I thought maybe I can’t fix their problems, but I can help them feel less alone sometimes.”
24. Which of the following best describes Edward?
A. He related everything to Steller.
B. He was satisfied with his new haircut.
C. He lived with his mom in Mississippi.
D. He sat by the roadside asking for a haircut.
25. What do we know about the free haircuts?
A. They made people full of power.
B. They conveyed care and love to people in need.
C. They helped people solve their problems.
D. They made Steller’s salon obtain good reputation.
26. What inspired Stellar to start her Red Chair Project?
A. Her wish to talk to people.
B. Her mother’s encouragement.
C. Her personal experience in her teens.
D. Her ambition to start a unique salon.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Special Hair-dresser B. Edward’s Free Haircut

Search and rescue teams are often accompanied by man's best friend. A dog’s superior sense of smell can be critical to finding survivors buried under fallen buildings. But now a new animal is being trained to assist search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it's the rat.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr. Donna Kean, a researcher from Glasgow, Scotland who has been working with rats for years. Kean explained why she and her colleagues at the nonprofit AP0P0 train rats instead of dogs. “The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they’re just as trainable as dogs.” she said. “Their size is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn't be able to.”
At the moment. the rats are wearing homemade backpacks that contain microphones, video equipment. and location trackers, and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris (模拟的废墟). Rats would be able to get into small spaces to get to victims buried in the ruins. “We have not been in a real situation yet. We have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack, we will be able to hear from where the rat is inside the debris.” Kean said. “We have the potential to speak to victims through the rat.”
Researchers train them on a basic series of behavior. Training starts off in a really basic environment: a small and empty room. Then they gradually expand and increase the complexity in order to make it like real life. They can start adding in debris and making the training area look more like an actual collapsed building site.
The training just started, and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment. They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA, who are based in Turkey, a country with frequent earthquakes and hoping that by next year they’ll be able to take the rats to Turkey for trials.
28. What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work?
A. They are easier to train.
B. They have a better sense of smell.
C. They are more flexible with a smaller size.
D. They adapt to new environments more quickly.
29. What function is expected of the backpack?
A. To guide rats to find survivors.
B. To protect rats from being injured.
C. To help rescuers communicate with victims.
D. To provide some food for trapped people.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The difficulty of conducting experiments.
B. The process of training the rats.
C. The rats’ behaviour in real collapsed sites.
D. The importance of the research environment.
31. What will researchers plan to do next?
A. Use rats for rescue work on a large scale.
B. send rats to Turkey for field experiments.
C. Conduct further study on disaster prevention.
D. Develop the tracking technology to assist GEA.

Language diversity is dying. While there are over 5,000 languages in the world, experts estimate (估计) that many are on their way out. Statista,a data provider, compiled (编译) the results of the ongoing work of the Endangered Languages Project to create a map of endangered languages highlighting what regions of the world are most affected.
The Endangered Language Project is an online platform administered by the University of Hawai’i Manoa that collects information on the world’s languages, such as where each is spoken, the number of speakers left, what measures have been taken to preserve it, etc. For example, by perusing the Endangered Language Project’s website you can see that Irish Gaelic is an endangered language mostly spoken in Ireland and that consists of four different dialects; Irish Gaelic is spoken by 20,000 to 40,000 people worldwide.
Experts acknowledge that the rapid extinction of languages throughout the world is a fact that cannot be denied, but they also explain that it is very difficult to obtain exact numbers when it comes to languages and their extinction. This is because language information is outdated or limited, and it can be different in some cases to distinguish between languages and dialects. The Linguistic Society of America notes that some estimates state that 80 percent of the world's languages could be gone by the next century as languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Russian become even more of a majority.
On its website, the Endangered Language Project also features an interactive map of endangered languages that’s color-coded according to each language’s level of threat. Each language is represented by a colored dot on the map, and clicking the dot will reveal the name of the language and its status. Clicking on the name of the language will lead you to a more detailed information card about the specific language.
32.What did Statista do for the Endangered Languages Project?
A. Designing a map to show endangered languages.
B. Figuring out the number of language extinction. qiiyi :uId: qiiyi
C. Evaluating the data of the endangered language.
D. Creating a platform to predict affected regions.
33.What information can we get from the platform?
A. The reason why Irish Gaelic died out.
B. The places where Irish Gaelic is spoken.
C. The people who are interested in learning Irish Gaelic.
D. The measures that will be taken to protect Irish Gaelic.
34.Which of the following opinion do the experts agree with?
A. It is hard to distinguish languages and dialects.
B. It is impossible to collect language information.
C. The popularity of the major languages will influence the language diversity.
D. The language which is outdated or limited will surely be extinct sooner or later.
35.What is the feature of the Endangered Language Project?
A. It is interactive and informative. B. It is complete and colorful.
C. It features a picture of colored dots. D. It features a map of extinct language.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Talents may be artistic, technical, personal or social. Your talent needn’t be rewarding or useful, but it will always be your own. 36 That might take some work, but will benefit you a lot.
One of the best ways to find out what hidden talents you might have is to talk to people who know you best. We tend to overlook our abilities. 37 If you’re lucky enough to have family and friends who care about you, they won’t be shy about pointing out your talents.
38 Willie Johnson was blinded, but it was just because of his blindness that he was thought to be a more talented guitar player. So don’t let shortcomings or challenges discourage you from trying new things and developing talent.
Don’t be easily affected by others’ opinions. 39 Some people think James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was the best guitar player of all time, but a classical musician may consider him to be of no talent. Don’t let others tell you being an excellent rider isn’t a real talent, or that making good cheese doesn’t count.
Practice is also important. Even if you have no talent for the guitar, practicing two hours a day will guarantee you’ll get a lot better. Someone who practices will always end up more talented than someone who never does. 40
A. Hard work always pays off.
B. Sometimes talents lie in your interests.
C. Playing music may make for a bright future.
D. So we miss out too often on what makes us great.
E. Ideas about talents may vary from person to person.
F. Learn to look for your talents and build them into abilities.
G. You should face your weakness positively to develop your talent.

Brodie and his father lived in a caravan (宿营拖车) ever since his mother died and they lost their house. Now they worked for Miss Martha in the garden.
Brodie’s father had been a famous violin player. Brodie loved to watch how his father made the bow (弦乐器的弓) dance and glide (滑动) across the strings. When he turned 12, his father taught him how to play the instrument properly. Brodie was a fast learner and soon he could play the violin almost as well as his dad.
One day, Miss Samson, Brodie’s teacher, asked if anyone could play the violin. A talent scout (星探) was coming to school. He was looking for someone to play in the musical Mr Spy.
Hollie Larson’s hand went up fast. “I can play the violin,” she said. “I play in competitions.” Brodie kept quiet, but his friend Cam said, “Brodie has a violin and he can play it too.”
Brodie slid down in his seat. There was no way he would be good enough to play for an audience. He wasn’t going to make a fool of himself. Hollie Larson was good at everything.
“Bring your instruments tomorrow for a trial run,” the teacher said. “And oh, if you are selected, the pay is good!”
Brodie’s father let him take the violin. “But do take good care of it, Brodie,” he said.
Hollie Larson offered to play first. She was good, really good. Brodie suddenly felt embarrassed. There was no way he could play after her. But Miss Samson’s voice was demanding. “Brodie,” she said. “Your turn!”
Brodie felt his face get hot as he pulled out the violin. But the minute the bow touched the strings, Brodie was transported to a different world. He was back in Martha’s garden listening to his father. The room, was silent as Brodie walked back to his seat. And then came the applause, everyone clapping, except Hollie Larson.
Since the talent scout would come the next morning, Brodie decided to put the violin case on a high shelf in the classroom that night. It was the safest place, he thought. But, he was wrong!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
