It is that time of the year, when a handful of world’s leading scholars, social activists and researchers are rewarded with what is often cited as the most prestigious acknowledgement of human effort — the Nobel Prize. Here’s a look at who has won the prize and for what.
    Physiology or Medicine
Swedish geneticist Svante Peabo won the first Nobel of the year, for starting the field of ancient DNA studies. He is well-known for extracting, sequencing, and analyzing ancient DNA from Neanderthal (尼安德特人) bones.
    Physics
Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger’s work in quantum (量子) technology landed them the second Nobel Prize announced in 2022. Although Aspect is from France, Clauser from the U.S, and Zeilinger from Austria, the three separately performed “groundbreaking experiments” as one team. “Their results have cleared the way for new technology,” the committee stated.
    Chemistry
The Nobel Prize for chemistry went to another trio, Carolyn R. Bertozzi from the U.S., Morten Meldal from Denmark and K. Barry Sharpless from the U.S. “for the development of click chemistry and biorthogonal chemistry (双正交化学),” the committee stated. Dr. Bertozzi is the eighth woman chemist to be awarded the prize, while Dr. Sharpless is the fifth scientist to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.
    Economics
The Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to three American economists, Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig “for research on banks and financial crises,” the Nobel Prize committee announced on Monday. By studying the history of American economics, particularly the Great Depression of the 1930s, they improved how we understand the role of banks during times of hardship and the bank’s impact on societal functions.
    21. For what study did Svante Peabo win the prize?
    A. The study about the bones of dinosaurs.
    B. The study about a new medicine of cancer.
    C. The study about the genes of our ancestors.
    D. The study about the new ways of sequencing.
    22. How many scientists have won the Nobel Prize twice according to the passage?
    A. Eight. B. Five. C. Three. D. Two.
    23. What do the prizes for physics, chemistry and economics in 2022 have in common?
    A. Each of them has three winners.
    B. Their findings develop a new technology.
    C. Their winners are all from the same countries.
    D. Their winners help people solve social problems.
    B
A dog spent the last four years of his life waiting at a crossroad in the Thai city of Khon Kaen as if waiting for someone. People originally thought the dog had been abandoned, but then realized that he looked healthy, so people asked around about him. It turned out that the dog had indeed been spending most of his time around that crossroad, but a woman had been coming round regularly to bring him food and water.
One day, while photographing the dog everyone called Leo, a reporter met the woman who had been taking care of him. She had come to drop off some food. After learning the story about the dog and the woman, the reporter decided to share the story on social media. The post soon went viral and the photos of Leo got shared hundreds of times. And the photos reached the eyes of Leo’s former old owner.
Nang Noi Sittisarn, a 64-year-old woman from Thailand’s Roi Et Province, almost had a heart attack when her daughter showed her a photo of the beloved dog named BonBon she had lost during a car trip. When she learned that he had been waiting for her in the same spot for the last four years, her heart melted.
Auntie Noi told her daughter to drive her to where the dog was waiting. When she got there and called his name, BonBon, the poor dog started wiggling (扭动) his tail and came to her, but when she tried to take him home with her, he was unwilling to follow. She didn’t want to force the dog to come with her so she agreed to leave him with his new master. However, she and her daughter will come to visit him regularly.
    24. Why did the dog look healthy after separation from his former owner?
    A. He walked around the crossroad constantly.
    B. He was kept at a woman’s home all the time.
    C. A local reporter brought him food and water.

    27. Which of the following can we best describe the dog Leo?

Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession (一连串,连续). With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, “binge-watching” has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available at the same time. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode”.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back (一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to negligence (疏忽) in many, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The countless of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”
    28. How did the writer develop the first paragraph?
    A. By telling a story. B. By giving a definition.
    C. By listing an example. D. By analyzing the cause and effect.
    29. What can we infer about a person in binge-watching mode?
    A. He may forget vital issues at work.
    B. He will receive high evaluations from their boss.
    C. He may have better interactions with colleagues.
    D. He will have an earlier sleep and have a comfortable life.
    30. What do Lindsey’s words imply in Paragraph 4?
    A. People have no patience to do work.
    B. People can’t control their movements.
    C. People are unable to resist the attractions.
    D. People are addicted to online social media.
    31. What advice did the writer give at last?
    A. To watch episodes in a proper way.
    B. To draw life lessons from the episodes.
    C. To keep online media from functioning.
    D. To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.
    D
Soil creates life from death. The production of food we eat mainly relies on soil. But this precious resource is eroded (侵蚀) at a global average of 13.5 tons per hectare per year. Instead of nourishing crops, fertile topsoil is washed and blown away, ending up in inconvenient places such as ditches and oceans.
Jo Handelsman and Kayla Cohen try to make readers care about soil in A World Without Soil. Their prologue (前言) takes the form of a letter to the government. With the letter, they hope to make soil management a federal priority. The following chapters cover the basic science of soil as well as the causes and consequences of its loss. In the last part of the book, the authors turn to possible solutions — many of them simple, and some centuries old. They describe about traditional soil management techniques, including planting diverse crops in rotation (轮种), increasing organic content, ploughing as little as possible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able to produce rich agricultural production while maintaining deep banks of fertile soil.
Why, then, is fertile soil being allowed to be washed and blown away? The answer, not surprisingly, rests in global capitalism. Farmers’ profit is thin, forcing farmers to plant the highest-profit crop from field to field every season. To ensure food security, Handelsman and Cohen urge the world to demand a real top-down change in how agricultural production is managed. “The burden of protecting soil cannot be shifted to farmers and environmental activists,” they note. Governments must begin to move towards a model in which farmers are less independent business people growing and selling food, and more government-supported land workers managing both food production and soil protection. This should be the core of agriculture.
Our land and soil are too precious to be destroyed by the market price of crops. We must invest deeply and thoughtfully in our farmers so that they can invest deeply and thoughtfully in the land. This is the future of farming.
    32. What is the function of the statistics in paragraph 1?
    A. To show the great value of soil.
    B. To raise public awareness about protecting resources.
    C. To highlight the importance of food production in human life.
    D. To present the serious problem of land shortage in recent years.

    33. What do we know about the book A World Without Soil?
    A. It targets federal officials as its main readers.
    B. It puts forward some practical solutions to soil loss.
    C. It advocates changing traditional farming techniques.
    D. It blames governments for not taking care of farmlands.
    34. What do Handelsman and Cohen suggest governments do?
    A. Invest in the most profitable crops.
    B. Grow and sell food all by themselves.
    C. Offer farmers support in working the land.
    D. Shift the burden of protecting soil to environmental activists.
    35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
    A. A Call to Save Soil.
    B. Tips to Reshape Agriculture.
    C. Ways to Expand Food Production.
    D. An Appeal to Secure Food Supply.

    My New Brother
I was in my room, feeling unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He had recently been adopted by my parents and I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kirstie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she had never done before Henry came to our home. I hadn’t wet his book on purpose. Raindrops fell from my eyes. To make matters worse, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结), something he liked to do. Why did a boy like him like doing girly work? It seemed far from manly.
Soon, it was time to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It will be Henry’s first time onstage. Be kind to him, honey.” I nodded but sighed. I hadn’t always found it this difficult to be kind. But since Henry had moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I suddenly realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (拉绳) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. I could hear the audience laughing. Even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. If only someone could help me out.
    续写要求:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment.

After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.
