Dr. Dolittle lived in a small town called Puddleby. Everyone in the town knew him. The dog and children ran after him. He kept many animals in his garden. Dr. Dolittle didn’t have many patients. Most people didn’t like all of his animals, so when they were ill, they went to a doctor in another town.
“But you don’t have any money,” his sister told him. “You need patients.”
“Then I’ll sell everything I have,” he said. And he did. He sold most of his furniture. He also sold most of his clothes. Then he had enough money to buy food for himself and his animals.
One day, a cat’s-meat-man said to him, “Why don’t you stop being a doctor for people and become a doctor for animals instead? I’m sure that you know a lot about animals.”
When the cat’s-meat-man left, Polynesia, the parrot, flew onto the table. “He’s right, Doctor,” Polynesia said. “You should become an animal doctor. I’m not the only animal that can talk. All the animals can talk. Each kind of animal has its own language. I’ll teach you mine if you like.”

I used to hate my mother because she worked a lot and didn’t spend much time with me. Then one Friday morning I took part in a three-day self-help program for teenagers. Whether you believe it or not, that weekend changed my life.
About 100 other teenagers were there. During the first two days I met a lot of great people. I was glad because I made so many friends there.
On Sunday, the leader did an interesting exercise called “Chocolate or Toys”. He asked a girl which she liked better, chocolate or toys. She chose chocolate. Then he asked her to choose again between chocolate and chocolate. Of course, she didn’t have a choice.
This exercise told us that sometimes we don’t have a choice in life, and that sometimes we have to accept something, rather than complaining(抱怨).
A girl stood up and started talking about her mom who was a drug addict(吸毒者)and how much she hated her mother.
“I want a new mom,” she cried.
“Unluckily, you can’t have one,” the leader replied.

When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand? These days, buying second-hand items is becoming more popular.
Many people have extra things to get rid of. In recent years, people have made more money and bought far more than they need. At the same time, more people are becoming interested in minimalism (极简主义).
What is minimalism?
Minimalism is an art movement that started in the US in the late 1950s. It focuses on art that is simple yet beautiful. Artists use simple geometric shapes (几何形状) to create it.
Second-hand items are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2020, the quality of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. Instead of making new things, it’s a better choice to reuse old things. So online second-hand trading sites are booming.
Where can I buy them?
Deja Vu has over 3 million users. About 20, 000 books are sold on the site every day. One million people sell over 2 million second-hand items on Xianyu every day.
People can even find some “extinct” items, or items that are no longer made from the trading sites.
________
Zhao Kaiqi, a college student from Harbin, loves buying books on Deja Vu. She can save a lot of money. It also brings her interesting experiences that she doesn’t have when she buys new books. Yin Weian, freelance writer from London, UK, is a big fan of vintage items. They are special and have a unique look. She likes items from the 1950s and 1960s, like clothing from the TV series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Vintage items carry stories from the past. Once she bought a bracelet with the words “Rose” and “Love, Jason” carved on it. It made her wonder about the story behind the bracelet. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, but whether you can find an item that fits you. It’s an interesting connection.

Smartphones have become an important part of our daily lives. However, to protect younger students’ eyesight and make sure they focus on their studies, primary and middle schools will have more specific rules to limit students’ mobile phone use on campus.
The Ministry of Education released a notice in January that basically speaking, primary and middle school students can’t carry mobile phones to school and those who still require their phone for some reason must get their parents’ and teachers’ agreement and must hand their phones over during class time. The purpose of the notice is to improve students’ focus on study and fight addiction (沉迷) to the Internet and games.
According to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network Information Center, China had 150 million Internet users under the age of 18 in 2019, with 80 percent having their own mobile phones. This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebrae (颈椎) and even the brain.
Many schools have taken actions to limit students’ phone use on campus. Some teachers ask their students to put their phones into a box to store them during class. And some students also agree with the new policy. They think there are more advantages than disadvantages. But some parents think it is unwise to take a “one size fits all” approach. We can’t simply cut students off from the Internet in the digital era. So it’s more important to cultivate (培养) kids’ ability to self-manage and develop good habits of phone usage.
