Bob Burdett was on his bike just before noon on Sept.15, heading to meet his son for an afternoon of mountain biking at Riverside State Park. As he coasted to the bottom of Doomsday Hill, Burdett, 62-year-old, approached a turn at a little more than 20 mph.
His bike turned right. His body flew left. Then his helmeted(戴着头盔的) head hit the ground so hard that it knocked him unconscious—hard enough for his Apple Watch to feel it. “A hit that hard could have killed me if I weren’t wearing it,” Burdett said.
Burdett was bleeding above his left eye. His shoulder and some ribs were put out of place. Burdett’s memory went black moments before the crash. Then he woke up in an ambulance on the way to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.
It was his Apple Watch that had called 911 through the fall-detection function, which will send out an alert (警报) if the wearer is fixed for 60 seconds after a fall. His watch messaged emergency medical services at 12:02 p.m., and an ambulance was there within a minute.
Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said Burdett’s crash is the first example he’s aware of in Spokane where an Apple Watch alerted 911 to a hard fall. “It calls 911 automatically, which is pretty remarkable. I think it’s just another opportunity for the fire service to influence technology and use it to improve people's lives,” Schaeffer said.
4 What was Bob doing when the accident happened?
A. He was calling his son.
B. He was on the way to meet his son.
C. He was working out in nature.
D. He was checking his Apple Watch.
5. What was more likely to happen if Bob’s Apple Watch failed to work?
A. He would be found by his son immediately.
B. He would lose his life without being found.
C. He would be saved by Brian Schaeffer.
D. He would be sent to the nearest hospital by passers-by.
6. What worked well in Bob’s Apple Watch?
A. The inner medical services designed for wearers.
B. The fall-detection function able to dial 911.
C. The fixed number of 911 linked to hospitals.
D. The health information collected for patients.
7. What did Brian Schaeffer think of Bob’s being saved?
A. He ignored the function of the Apple Watch without hesitation.
B. He thought the Apple Watch should be linked to medicine.
C He found the Apple Watch helpful in locating positions.
D. He found the Apple Watch unbelievable and admirable.
C
Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it is important to have the right answer to that question.
How to Be Prepared
Electricity, water, gas (煤气) and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to fend for yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week. You’ll need food, water and so on. It’s also a good idea to decide ahead of time how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake. You might choose an outofthearea friend or relative that family members can call to check on you.
If you’re indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you’re outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you’re driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses.
After an Earthquake
Check for fire. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve(阀). If there’s sign of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box. If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency (紧急情况). Avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Be careful that things may fall out of cupboards when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with just a touch. Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right, generally follow large quakes. If you leave home, leave a message telling your friends and family your location.
8. The underlined phrase “fend for” in the second paragraph probably means “_______”.
A. look for B. take care of
C. be proud of D. think of
9. What should you do when an earthquake happens?
A. You should stay away from the kitchen.
B. You should drive on a bridge.
C. You should turn off the power.
D. You should listen to the radio frequently.
10. According to the passage, why doesn’t the author advise driving after an earthquake?
A. Because it is dangerous to drive as there will be aftershocks.
B. Because your car will be easily damaged in the streets full of blocks.
C. Because you should make way for emergency vehicles.
D. Because you can’t find a place to park your car.
11. What will probably happen after a big earthquake?
A. The local people’s life will return to normal in a week.
B. There will be more earthquakes occurring.
C. There won’t be any earthquakes in a short time.
D. The local people will stay at home waiting for help.
D
Along with silk and paper, gunpowder is another invention by Chinese and the Silk Road helped it spread to the West. The dating of gunpowder is as early as 850 AD. The Chinese used gunpowder to make fireworks and for signal flares (信号弹). Gunpowder was also thought to have been used in medicine and in alchemy (炼金术).
This invention seems to have been discovered in China by accident — by alchemists when doing experiments.
The gunpowder used for military purpose was first recorded in 919 AD. By the 11th century, explosive bombs filled with gunpowder were introduced and used in China. The words “fire cannon (大炮)” “rocket” and “fireball” appeared time and again in the official Song history as well as two other books written during the same period.
The first detailed description of using the “fire cannon” in warfare was in connection with a battle fought in 1126 when the Song army used it against the invading enemy. The socalled “fire cannon” was a tube made of bamboo filled with gunpowder which, when fired, threw a flaming missile towards the enemy. According to a description of a battle scene in 1132, it took two persons to carry a “fire cannon”, and the cannons were fired from a moving platform. And this platform had to be moved close to the wall of the besieged (被围攻的) city.
The Chinese invention of gunpowder reached Japan, the Islamic countries and then Europe in the 13th century and the Arabs improved gunpowder for military use. The early account of gunpowder in Europe was recorded by English philosopher Roger Bacon in the 13th century.
One century later the Arabs used it to attack the Spanish town Baza and the next year in 1326 Florence ordered the manufacturing of cannon and cannon balls. From Italy the making of gunpowder soon spread to other European countries, and by the 1350s it had become an effective weapon on the battlefield.
12. According to this passage, we can learn that gunpowder________.
A. was invented earlier than silk and paper
B. was used for military purpose as soon as it was invented
C. was used in fireworks, medicine, alchemy and military purpose
D. was spread from the West to China
13. Gunpowder was discovered________.
A. by alchemists when they had an accident
B. by alchemists after studying it for a long time
C. accidentally by alchemists
D. experimentally by alchemists
14. Which of the following words can best describe a fire cannon?
A. Convenient. B. Heavy. C. Useless. D. Simple.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Powerful Fire Cannons
B. Four Inventions of Ancient China
C. The Discovery of the Alchemists
D. Gunpowder
