The outer side of the crater sloped southward and the Earth, which was low in the southern sky, was nearly full, so that the entire crater-slope was brightly lit. Language pointsParaphrase: The entire crater-slope faced south and was brightly lit by the sun’s reflection on the Earth, which was just above the horizon to the south. The outer side of the crater sloped southward,第二个并列句的主干是 the Earth was nearly full。 She leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek.① southward He didn’t pass the exam , which disappointed me.Language points③ so that I took no notice of him, so that he flew into a rage. Language pointsHe practices speaking English every day, so that his spoken English is fluent.辨析: so that 后面也可接目的状语从句,此时 so that 后面的从句多有 can / could / may 等词, 意为 “目的是”。例如:The old man takes more exercise so that he can live longer. Language points2. The slope was a gentle one and even the weight of the spacesuit couldn’t keep Jimmy from racing up it in a floating hop that made the gravity seem nonexistent.Paraphrase: Jimmy was able to bound easily up the gentle slope, hardly noticing the weight of his spacesuit because of the Moon’s low gravity.Language points句中有 keep sb. from doing sth 这个短语,意为 “阻止某人做某事” , 相当于 stop sb. from doing sth。 We have to take measures to keep this kind of thing from happening again.例如:These worries kept her from sleeping properly. Language points2) float v. A plastic bag was floating in the water. He crossed the hall with a hop, skip and a jump. Language points3. Jimmy couldn’t go wrong while Robutt was around, tripping him when he was too near a rock, or jumping on him to show how much he loved him, or circling around and squeaking low and scared when Jimmy hid behind a rock, when all the time Robutt knew well enough where he was.Language pointsParaphrase: Jimmy was always safe while Robutt was with him. Robutt would knock him out of trouble when he was too near a rock, jump on him to show how much he loved him, or go round in circles making noises as if he was scared when Jimmy hid behind a rock. Robutt always knew very well where Jimmy was.Language points1) 此句中的 tripping … a rock, jumping … loved him, circling around and squeaking … where he was 为四个并列的 doing 结构,在句子中作 was around 的伴随状语。Language points2) 此句中的 trip 意为 to make someone fall by putting your foot in front of them when they are moving “把(某人)绊倒”例如: He didn’t notice me and stretched out his foot suddenly, almost tripping me. 4. Jimmy held out his arms and Robutt was in them in one bound. Language pointsParaphrase: When Jimmy opened his arms, Robutt jumped into them at once.1) “hold out”意为“伸出(手或手里的东西)”。She held out her hand to him. Language points2) bound 是一个多义词,在本句中用作名词,意为 a long or high jump made with a lot of energy “跳跃”。 You’ve done so much work ─ you’re bound to pass the exam. We are not bound by the decision. 5.
