16. If you visit the new mummies(木乃伊) show at the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH) in New York City, don't miss the Gilded Lady. Scientists say she probably died of lung disease when she was in her 40s—about 2,000 years ago—in ancient Egypt. They even have a model of her skull(头骨). And yet, the mummy's coffin has never been opened. Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT (扫描仪) to look inside.
CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.
"A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies' coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies," says the AMNH president Ellen V. Futter. "We just don't do that anymore. We can do so much better. By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person's diet from some of a mummy's hair. Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom."
Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck. Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buried with the skull of an ancestor (祖先).
The 19 mummies in the show were from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear and smell. In ancient Peru, people practised mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.
Futter calls the mummies in the show "messengers from another time". With the help of technology, scientists will continue to uncover mummies' secrets so we can understand it.
1.What did scientists find about the Gilded Lady?
A.She was a great artist. B.She died of a natural death.
C.She lived in ancient Egypt. D.She had an amazingly long life.
2.What do Futter's words suggest?
A.Pieces of bone show a person's diet.
B.CT scanners do great harm to mummies.
C.Mummies usually wore the skull of an enemy.
D.Technology plays an important role in mummy studies.
3.Why did the ancient Peruvians make mummies?
A.To do traditional medical research. B.To keep close ties with their relatives.
C.To help their families live a better life. D.To let their ancestors live on in another world.
4.What does the underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The technology. B.Their message. C.Their family. D.The show.
17. Can you define great art? On the one hand, we can all see that great art is old art which is called great. But how do we know which art of our own times is great, and which will be forgotten? And who decides?
These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time. When Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were writing, for example, most critics considered them as hack(平庸) writers with little or no literary ability. Similarly, Van Gogh and many of the other impressionist painters of the late nineteenth century were not allowed to participate in events involving what were thought to be the "real" painters of the time, and often they were very poor. Yet today their paintings often sell for millions of dollars, while those so-called "real" painters are now barely remembered.
So what makes great art? Can, for example, rock music be great art? Music videos? Cartoons and comics? Those who call themselves critics of the fine arts often have been the last to recognise great art in the past, and we can probably expect this to be the situation today.
Critics often don't recognise great art because they tend to be prejudiced against what is popular. Popular works, whether they are novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art.
But popularity, it seems to me, is one of the three signs that a present-day work of art may come to be thought of as great. The other two are that it is groundbreaking, and that it is inherently (固有地) beautiful.
Many works have one or even two of these qualities of being popular, unusual, and beautiful. But having all the three often will mean that a work of art will someday be seen to be great, though it may take a good spoonful of time, such as a century or two, to know for sure.
1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To explain what kind of art will become popular.
B.To introduce some real painters to the readers.
C.To introduce the writer's confusion about art.
D.To lead into the following points by arousing the reader's curiosity.
2.What does the author want to prove by using the examples of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Van Gogh?
A.These masters' works have some shortcomings.
B.These masters wouldn't have been so successful without the critics.
C.Truly beautiful works of art are never understood when first created.
D.Great masters are often not acknowledged while they were alive.
3.According to the passage, what do critics think of popular works?
A.They will be out of date quickly.
B.They are created for profit rather than for art.
C.They might be presented in a popular form.
D.They are thought valuable because of their low sale price.
4.What can be inferred from the last three paragraphs?
A.Critics have changed their attitudes to great works.
B.Critics' comments determine great art works.
C.The work of art itself determines its greatness.
D.Popular works today must become great art works someday.

12.答案:to hold
13.答案:to be published
故填to be published。
14.答案:to be writing
15.答案:are more impressed by
根据上句中的"messengers from another time"并结合画线词前的"With the help of technology"可知,科学家会继续揭开木乃伊的神秘面纱以便人们能理解他们(所传递)的信息。故选B。
These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time.
Popular works, whether they are novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art.
