    A
“You have to tell us where you are going and you lied,” my sons’ father said to him after telling him he wouldn’t be able to hang out with his friends for two weeks.
My youngest knows the rules: You have to tell us where you will be at all times, and if the plans change, you have to ask before you participate. I’ve drilled this into his head over and over because I’m that anxious mom, the one that worries, the one who is afraid her kids are going to get into a bad situation if she doesn’t repeatedly remind them to make the right choices and follow the rules.
Parents can constantly tell their kids to follow the rules, act politely and do things the “right” way. We can teach them the lessons and hope they follow our advice. But the truth is, even though your child can hear your voice in their ear while they are getting ready to stick their big toe into something that they know would make your head spin, it might not be enough to stop the them.
There are times when they need to experience feeling scared, uneasy or guilty in order to learn and keep them from repeating the same mistake over and over again. It’s one of the scariest realizations I’ve had as a parent, but after living with three teens for a few years it’s my truth-and it’s the truth of every other parent of a teenager.
Looking back upon my young life, I know nothing really sank in unless I experienced it for myself, like when I stopped eating chocolate late at night and found I was finally able to sleep at night. It took me long to stop damaging my own sleep even though not eating the chocolate was the simple solution. And I am not a stubborn teen.
I’ve realized the importance of stepping back (just a bit), and letting my teens navigate (寻找) their own way. It’s made all the difference.
    1. What does the author expect her son to do?
    A. Stop being so anxious.
    B. Follow the family rules.
    C. Learn to tell right from wrong.
    D. Communicate more with parents.
    2. Which of the following can replace the underlined part “sank in” in Paragraph 5?
    A. Became fully understood.
    B. Played an important role.
    C. Sounded possible.
    D. Made progress.
    3. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Let go of your children
    B. Give your kids more love
    C. Step back when necessary
    D. Learn important life lessons
根据第二段“My youngest knows the rules: You have to tell us where you will be at all times, and if the plans change, you have to ask before you participate. I’ve drilled this into his head over and over because I’m that anxious mom, the one that worries, the one who is afraid her kids are going to get into a bad situation if she doesn’t repeatedly remind them to make the right choices and follow the rules.(我最小的孩子知道规矩:你必须随时告诉我们你会在哪里,如果计划有变,你必须在参与之前问清楚。我一遍又一遍地向他灌输这句话,因为我是一个焦虑的妈妈,一个担心的妈妈,一个害怕如果她不反复提醒孩子们做出正确的选择,遵守规则,她的孩子就会陷入糟糕的境地的妈妈)”可推断,作者希望自己的儿子遵守家规。故选B。
    【2题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“There are times when they need to experience feeling scared, uneasy or guilty in order to learn and keep them from repeating the same mistake over and over again.(有时他们需要经历害怕、不安或内疚的感觉,以学习和防止他们一次又一次地重复同样的错误)” 可知,作者认为孩子们应该通过亲自犯错误来学习道理。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“I’ve realized the importance of stepping back (just a bit), and letting my teens navigate (寻找) their own way. It’s made all the difference.(我已经意识到后退一步的重要性(只是一点点),让我的孩子们寻找他们自己的路。这让一切都不同了)”及全文可知,作者通过自己的经历认识到孩子们应该通过犯错误来学习道理,呼吁家长不要用家规束缚技子,不要害怕孩子犯错误或遇到困难,让孩子寻找自己的路,学会自己成长。所以“Let go of your children(放开你的孩子)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选A。
    B
I've lived in big cities. And I was often woken at night and frequently concerned by the almost constant sounds of car and truck engines. I now live in the middle of the woods.
So I was excited when hearing about the Spanish city that has prevented cars from running. It seemingly means I could have everything that a city offers museums and culture, walking to get groceries or delicious coffee, a quick subway or bus ride to work —and peace and quiet. It sounds like that's what people in Pontevedra got after this city carried out its leader Lores' order of changing 75 acres of this city's historic center into a pedestrian-only place.
Formerly, the area had been filled with cars. People tried to get in and out of the area as quickly as they could. Cars would get stuck in the area when they tried to cross the city, while others circled endlessly looking for a parking space, which led to upset for drivers and plenty of noise for pedestrians and residents.
Later the area was rebuilt with beautiful stones and returned to pedestrians. Nearly three-quarters of what were car journeys are now made on foot or by bicycle. Air becomes much cleaner. As a result, the population of central Pontevedra is obviously increasing after it has attracted 12.000 new residents from nearby towns to live there.
Considering the negative health effects of pollution, it makes sense to get rid of cars from at least some parts of urban areas. The good news is that Pontevedra isn't the only one to expand car-free areas. Dublin, Santa Monica and Burlington have pedestrian-only areas, too. These cities' great changes will probably positively shape many other leaders' decisions on city planning.
    4. What do we know about the author's past life in cities?
    A. She preferred to keep to herself. B. She visited museums constantly.
    C. She didn't live quite joyfully there. D. She didn't like working during the day.
    5. What may Lores' order have led to according to the author?
    A. Tourists being less interested in the city. B. More museums and factories being built.
    C. Transportation becoming a little inconvenient. D. People better enjoying services offered by the city
    6. What did Pontevedra's historic center use to look like?
    A. It had fantastic scenery. B. It was troubled by traffic.
    C. It was crowded with bicycles. D. It had fewer parking lots.
    7. What does the author think of Pontevedra's plan for cars?
    A. It needs to be improved. B. It may be adopted by more cities.
    C. It differs from the Santa Monica's. D. It harms the rights of many drivers.
C 5. D 6. B 7. B
根据第一段中“I've lived in big cities. And I was often woken at night and frequently concerned by the almost constant sounds of car and truck engines.(我在大城市住过。我经常在夜里被吵醒,经常被汽车和卡车几乎不间断的引擎声吵醒)”可知,作者在过去的城市生活得不太愉快。故选C。

In Los Angeles, UPS driver Hector Vesco noticed that while he did his normal route, there was one kid who looked sad.
Once Hector understood why the boy looked upset, he jumped into action. A father of two himself, he knew that he would have to check in with the parents. Using a blank UPS slip, Hector wrote out a note reading, “Hi, this is Hector, your UPS driver. I’ve seen your son plenty of times on the balcony and he seemed very sad that he didn’t get any package. When he asked me if I had any package for him, I told him, ‘Don’t worry. Maybe next time.’ So, anyway, I’ve bought something and put it in box. Just wanted to know his name.” Hector also shared his number so that the parents could contact him directly.
After getting all the information he needed from the mother BrookeWalbuck, Hector showed up the next day and surprised the boy, Langston, with the delivery.
Of course, the gesture of delivering the parcel was nice enough, but it turned out what was inside made it even better! When Langston opened up the box, he found a collection of toy cars and a bunch of candy. It didn’t get much better than that for a little boy.
After the delivery was made, Brooke sent a follow-up text to thank Hector again. In his reply, Hector stated that he had two daughters himself. He kept a bunch of toy cars he had collected over the years. When he met Langston, he knew it was the perfect opportunity to put them to good use.
In his message back to Brooke, he also intentioned that Langston helped him remember how many kids, along with his, had to live through the COVID-19 pandemic (疫情). “Our kids are our world and the future,” he said. “I just want to show some love.”
Before the pandemic, you probably didn’t think too much about the people who delivered your packages. But in times of pandemic, delivery drivers like Hector have some of the most important jobs!

    11. What does the author mainly intend to convey in the text?

We all need to eat, and when we go to buy food at the supermarket, we’re offered many choice. But we often buy food that’s been produced in huge amounts and that’s traveled many miles before it ends up on our plate. So for some, growing their own food is a better choice – and it tastes good too!
From growing vegetables in little pots on your balcony to taking care of a small plot of land, there are many ways to produce home-grown food. It can be backbreaking work digging, weeding and watering the soil, but the result is fresh, home-grown fruits and vegetables, helping us keep a ‘five-a-day’ diet.
The recent Covid-19 pandemic lock-down means demand for homegrown food has seen a comeback in the UK. Miriam Dobson from the University of Sheffield, told the BBC that some people have been spending a lot of their time on their plots, growing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables – which, at times, have been challenging to buy in supermarkets. She says “Coronavirus has reminded people of the weakness within our global food system. In such a difficult time, interest in self-support rises.”
But for those with limited space, a solution to grow your own vegetables lies closer to home – using pots. Sheila Brand lives in a third-floor flat in Rotterdam. She has managed to grow tomatoes and eggplants and is already harvesting raspberries. She told the BBC watching the plants grow “is very exciting: 'Oh it's got a new leaf!' ”
As well as the benefits of saving money and enjoying tasty food, growing your own from a balcony or window ledge not only improves your well-being and immediate environment, you can actually grow a lot of vegetables. So, maybe it’s time for us all to get planting and develop our green fingers!
    12. A “five-a-day” diet (Para. 2) probably refers to a diet that include__________ every day.
    A. Five meals B. Enough fruits and vegetables
    C. Five kinds of rice D. Plenty of water
    13. According to Para 3, home-grown food is getting popular again in the UK recently because _____.
    A. It’s more interesting, cheap and delicious.
    B. our global food system is doing harm to us.
    C. It saves the time and money on transportation.
    D. it can be hard to buy fresh food during the pandemic.
    14. According to the writer, where can you grow your own food if you live in a small flat?
    A. In a pot. B. On a plate. C. In a garden. D. On the roof.
    15. What does the writer imply in the last sentence?
    A. Growing your own food can do good to your health.
    B. Growing your own food can make your fingers green.
    C. Growing your own food can improve your gardening skills.
    D. Growing your own food can bring your family more happiness.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“From growing vegetables in little pots on your balcony to taking care of a small plot of land, there are many ways to produce home-grown food. It can be backbreaking work digging, weeding and watering the soil, but the result is fresh, home-grown fruits and vegetables, helping us keep a ‘five-a-day’ diet.(从在阳台上的小盆里种植蔬菜到照料一小块地,有很多方法可以种植自家种植的食物。挖掘、除草和浇灌土壤是一项累人的工作,但结果是种植了新鲜的、自家种的水果和蔬菜,帮助我们保持“一天五蔬果”的饮食)”可推知,“每日五蔬果”饮食可能是指每天吃足够的水果和蔬菜。故选B。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Coronavirus has reminded people of the weakness within our global food system. In such a difficult time, interest in self-support rises. (冠状病毒提醒人们全球粮食系统的薄弱。在这样的困难时期,自食其力的兴趣上升了)”可知,本土食品最近在英国再次流行起来,是因为在疫情期间很难买到新鲜食物。故选D。

So, maybe it’s time for us all to get planting and develop our green fingers!(除了省钱和享受美味的好处外,在阳台或窗台上种植自己的蔬菜不仅可以改善你的健康和周围的环境,实际上你可以种很多蔬菜。
Chopsticks(筷子)come in many different shapes and styles, and have been around since 1200 B.C.E. The utensils(器具)earned their place at the Chinese dinner table around 400 B.C.E. More than 20 percent of the world’s population relies on chopsticks for eating. China alone uses 45 billion disposable(一次性)pairs per year. ___16___
China was the first to experiment with chopsticks nearly 3000 years ago. ___17___ The Chinese used them for cooking since they could dip them into boiling pots of water. Then China’s population boomed. Cooks were forced to conserve resources, which meant chopping foods into tiny bites that used less fuel to cook. Bite sized foods, paired with Chinese philosopher and vegetarian Confucius’ anti-knife beliefs, set up the utensils for widespread adoption beyond China.
___18___ Chinese chopsticks, for instance, are long and thick “to facilitate dining around the table,” Ruixi Hu, founder of Lost Plate Food Tours, says. Hu grew up in Chengdu, China, where she first used chopsticks at age 2. She now goes on food tours throughout Asia and she’s found many chopstick varieties.
In Japan, where bamboo chopsticks were adopted in 500 C.E., chopsticks have evolved over time. They’re now particularly fine-tuned for one of Japan’s main foods: fish. “Japanese chopsticks are short and sharp, mainly because the Japanese are good at eating fish, and it is easy to remove fish bones with sharp chopsticks,” Hu says. ___19___ That’s why their chopsticks don’t need to be as long.
Head over to South Korea where chopsticks look a bit different. ___20___ That’s because South Koreans love barbecue. The metal chopsticks won’t burn when diners are barbecuing their meat.
    A. Chopsticks are different throughout Asian cultures.
    B. But at that time, they weren’t used as eating utensils.
    C. There, chopsticks are flat and typically made of metal.
    D. So how did two sticks start a massive mealtime revolution.
    E. So why were silver chopsticks gaining popularity overseas?
    F. They usually eat their own dishes instead of sharing them with others.
    G. On the contrary, disposable wooden chopsticks were first invented by the Japanese in 1878.
D 17. B 18. A 19. F 20. C
由空白处前的内容:Chopsticks(筷子)come in many different shapes and styles, and have been around since 1200 B.C.E. The utensils(器具)earned their place at the Chinese dinner table around 400 B.C.E. Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door--one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转)and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附 着)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!" They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising." The villagers started running away from the beach.
    Sami watched dumbstruck(呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!" He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near." He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
    Paragraph 1:
Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
“Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried. “Don't be scared, little one, come to me, quickly.”
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifted away! He struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught a palm tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out to Sami but could not see him. He clung to tree tightly while the sea was all around. In hope of seeing Sami, Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sami round and round. (79 words)
“Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared, little one, come to me, quickly.” “But Grandpa, I can’t swim!” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sami cried in despair. Suddenly, Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it! Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed; but in the near distance, his Grandpa was on another tree! Soon it was calm; both Grandpa and Sami came down the trees and rushed to hug each other, then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude. (78 words)

如:strive to;drifte away;struggle to;look around等高级词汇。
