Running can be a polarizing (两极分化的) subject. Most people fall into one of two camps: those who love running every morning, and those who would sooner do anything to avoid it. For most of my life, I was planted in the second camp.
I always hated running. At age 12, I remember entering a neighborhood 5K with my dad; I also remember placing dead last, followed by only the police car driving patiently behind me. Three years later, I didn’t make the junior volleyball team because I couldn’t run a mile in under 10 minutes. Every time I ran, I felt as though failure — in some form or another — was the only possible result.
The summer after my freshman year, though, I took a job at a summer camp in Connecticut, where I got paid to be a kid again. I spent my days keeping an eye on different camp activities. When it came to exercise, running was my only choice. So, I made myself a promise: Every day, I would run for a while. By most runners’ standards, it wasn’t far; I guessed it was only about a mile. But I decided to do it every day, no matter how long it took. The exercise lasted for 61 days — the entire time I spent at camp that summer.
I started to feel better about myself. But to my great surprise, I learned to love running, too. I went from fearing the sport to loving it. I’ve finished seven marathons (马拉松) and more shorter races than I can remember, and now I am a running coach. These were the secrets I discovered to changing my way of looking at life.

5. What can we say about the author from paragraph 2?
A. He didn’t like to do any sport.
B. He didn’t believe he could do sports.
C. He didn’t do well in runningrelated sports.
D. He didn’t join in the volleyball team on purpose.
6. What decision did the author make in the camp?
A. To run every day.
B. To do a parttime job.
C. To fully relax himself in the camp.
D. To take part in different activities.
7. How does the author look at running after the camp?
A. It is a difficult thing to do.
B. It has become a boring sport.
C. It makes a difference to him.
D. It has little effect on him.

Recently according to a new research, humans have had a link to starches (含淀粉的食物) for up to 120,000 years — that’s more than 100,000 years longer than we’ve been able to plant them in the soil during the time of the Ice Age’s drawing to an end. The research is part of an ongoing study into the history of Middle Stone Age communities.
An international team of scientists identified evidence of prehistoric starch consumption in the Klasies River Cave, in present-day South Africa. Analyzing small, ashy, undisturbed hearths (壁炉) inside the cave, the researchers found “pieces of burned starches” ranging from around 120,000 to 65,000 years old. It made them the oldest known examples of starches eaten by humans.
The findings do not come as a complete surprise — but rather as welcome confirmation of older theories that lacked the related evidence. The lead author Cynthia Larbey said that there had previously only been genetic (基因的) biological evidence to suggest that humans had been eating starch for this long. This new evidence, however, takes us directly to the dinner table, and supports the previous assumption that humans, digestion genes gradually evolved in order to fit into an increased digestion of starch.
Co-author Sarah Wurz said, “The starch remains show that these early humans living in the Klasies River Cave could battle against their tough environment and find suitable foods and perhaps medicines. And as much as we all still desire the tubers (块茎), these cave communities were grilling starches such as potatoes on their foot-long hearths. They knew how to balance their diets as well as they could, with fats from local fish and other animals.”
As early as the 1990s, some researchers started to study the hearths in the Klasies River Cave. Scientist Hilary Deacon first suggested that these hearths contained burned plants. At the time, the proper methods of examining the remains were not yet available. We now know human beings have always been searching for their desired things.
8. When did humans begin to farm starches?
A. After the Ice Age.
B. After the Middle Stone Age.
C. About 20,000 years ago.
D. About 100,000 years ago.
9. According to the scientists, what do the remains in the Klasies River Cave show ?
A. South Africa once had rich soil to grow crops
B. hearths were widespread in early human history
C. early humans possibly drove away animals by fire
D. settlers there might have used fire to cook starches
10. What was the previous assumption of starches?
A. Starch diet promoted food culture.
B. Starch diet shaped humans’ evolution.
C. Starches had a variety of functions.
D. Starches offered humans rich nutrition.
11. What can we learn about the early humans described by Sarah Wurz?
A. They were smart and tough.
B. They preferred plants to meat.
C. They were generally very healthy.
D. They got along with each other.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第一段中“Recently according to a new research, humans have had a link to starches (含淀粉的食物) for up to 120,000 years — that’s more than 100,000 years longer than we’ve been able to plant them in the soil during the time of the Ice Age’s drawing to an end.(根据最近的一项新研究,人类与淀粉的联系可达12万年之久——这比我们在冰河时代接近结束时将淀粉种在土壤中的时间还要长10万年)”可知,人类与淀粉的联系达12万年之久,比人类种植淀粉的时间长10万年,所以人类是大约2万年前开始种植淀粉的。
根据第二段中“An international team of scientists identified evidence of prehistoric starch consumption in the Klasies River Cave, in present-day South Africa. Analyzing small, ashy, undisturbed hearths (壁炉) inside the cave, the researchers found “pieces of burned starches” ranging from around 120,000 to 65,000 years old. (一个由国际科学家组成的团队在现今南非的克拉西斯河洞穴中发现了史前食用淀粉的证据。研究人员分析了洞穴内保存完好的、灰蒙蒙的小火炉,发现了“烧焦的淀粉碎片”,其历史大约在12万至6.5万年之间)”可推知,克拉西斯河洞穴中的残留物表明那里的定居者可能用火来煮淀粉。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This new evidence, however, takes us directly to the dinner table, and supports the previous assumption that humans, digestion genes gradually evolved in order to fit into an increased digestion of starch.(然而,这个新的证据直接把我们带到了餐桌上,并支持了之前的假设,即人类的消化基因逐渐进化,以适应对淀粉的消化增加)”可知,之前关于淀粉的假设是淀粉饮食影响了人类的进化。
根据第四段中Sarah Wurz的话“The starch remains show that these early humans living in the Klasies River Cave could battle against their tough environment and find suitable foods and perhaps medicines.(淀粉遗迹表明,这些生活在克拉西斯河洞穴的早期人类能够与恶劣的环境作斗争,并找到合适的食物,也许还有药物)”可推知,他们既聪明又坚韧。故选A项。

If someone created a flying machine capable of tracking you down by listening for your voice, you might be terrified. But what if you were trapped in ruins after a natural disaster and first responders couldn’t locate you? Maybe then a human-seeking drone (无人机) wouldn’t be such a terrible idea. That concept is the focus for engineers at German’s Fraunhofer FIE Institute, who’ve built a drone to find people by detecting (探测) human screams.
“The human-seeking drone would be ideal for post-disaster situations, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires”, said Macarena Varela, one of the lead engineers. “They could hover over an area that rescue crews have difficulty getting to and locate exactly where people may be trapped.”
Locating people by sound presents its share of challenges. An auditory (听觉的) system would need to distinguish human cries from sounds that often happen in nature, such as animal calls and wind. It might also need to recognize patterns associated with kicking, clapping or other ways people try to get the attention of rescue teams.
Engineers took those situations into account when building out their concept drone. They recorded themselves screaming, tapping and creating other noises that might be a sign of people in trouble. Then, they analyzed each sound frequency to find common signatures and used those to train artificial intelligence software. They also worked to remove the noise created by the drone and other environmental sounds.
Once the software part was complete, the team placed tiny digital microphones under the drone and used signal processing techniques that enabled them to track where human noises are coming from. The microphones also enhanced the volume and clarity of the speech. So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim’s location within a few seconds of picking up sound.
Next, they would like to add a higher frequency microphone to a drone to acquire more audio sound signals. The idea is to pick up noises from hundreds of meters away, Varela said. In the real world, victim's location data might one day be sent wirelessly to emergency crews carrying a tablet.
12. What can the auditory system do?
A. Recognize human cries. B. Pick up sounds from far away.
C. Send victim’s location data to a tablet. D. Improve the quality of human screams.
13. What does the underlined word “signatures” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Effects. B. Symbols. C. Features. D. Situations.
14. What is the advantage of the human-seeking drone?
A. Its high speed of flying. B. Its long working hours.
C. Its quick response to screams. D. Its easy access to disaster scene.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. AI Enables Drones to Give Better Performance
B. Human-seeking Drones Replace Rescue Crews
C. Rescuers Use Drones to Locate Disaster Survivors
D. Engineers Teach Drones to Hunt Human Screams
A 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据第五段“So far, they have conducted successful open field experiments, finding that the drone can estimate a victim’s location within a few seconds of picking up sound.(到目前为止,他们进行了成功的野外实验,发现无人机在捕捉到声音后几秒钟内就能估计出受害者的位置)”可知,无人机捕捉到声音后,几秒内就能估计出声音的位置,说明反应速度很快。
根据第一段“That concept is the focus for engineers at German’s Fraunhofer FIE Institute, who’ve built a drone to find people by detecting (探测) human screams. (这一概念是德国弗劳恩霍夫五研究所中工程师们所关注的,他们建立了无人机,这种无人机可以通过探测人类的尖叫声而找到他们)”及下文对这种无人机的介绍可知,文章主要讲述了一种通过探测人类的尖叫声来追踪目标的飞行器。由此可知,Engineers Teach Drones to Hunt Human Screams(工程师教无人机捕捉人类的尖叫声)适合作本文最佳标题。故选D。
