There was anther prblem, as ne lcal dctr described it, “We dn't even have enugh dctrs and nw yu als want eye surgens? That's prbably a pipe dream.”
    All this cnvinced Bastawrus that smething fundamental was needed. S he started explring ways t replace his clinic with a single, cnvenient device: a smartphne. He c­develped an app­based visual test that gathers as much infrmatin as the classic ne, using similar principles. The critical difference is that almst anyne can carry it ut after just a few minutes f training. Bastawrus c­funded a charitable cmpany t develp and apply the technlgy mre widely. His team als develped technlgies that enabled a smartphne camera t take hspital­grade images f the back f the eye.
    That's a pretty gd start, but Bastawrus has set his sights sky­high. “I feel we're at a tipping pint nw where this enrmus prblem will becme a histrical thing. That's when I'll sleep easy,” he says.

    When the exam was ver, I left the rm feeling a mix f fear and relief. But thse feelings changed t disappintment the next day after I learned I'd failed. I speak Spanish at hme, but I have difficulty translating even the simplest scientific cncepts int Spanish. This hampered my ability t cmfrtably speak the expected “language f science”.
    My adviser requested t reinstate (使重返岗位) me t the PhD prgram, and I'm nw back t wrking n my dctrate. I still have a little vice in the back f my head that I'm nt gd enugh.
