The Freshest Bakery was in a small town called Balminster. It made bread for supermarkets in a nearby city. The bakery had been there for a long time and most of the machines were old. The factory engineer, Frank, was good at maintaining (维修) the machines and most of the time there were no problems.
One Tuesday, Frank was finishing work. The manager came out of his office.
“You have a day off tomorrow,” he said to Frank.
“Yes!” smiled Frank. “My son is graduating from university! Tomorrow I will go to the graduation ceremony!” He planned to leave at 6 am and had enough time to drive there.
At 4:30 am the next morning, Frank got a phone call from the factory, asking him to repair the broken oven at once.
Oh no! thought Frank. He hoped he could fix it quickly. He took his suit to the factory, so he could drive from there to the university.
When he arrived at the factory, all the workers and the manager were waiting for him. “Thank you, Frank,” said the manager. “I know this is a big day for you, but we must bake the bread.”
Frank went to look at the big bread oven. Then he went back to the manager. “I can fix it, but it will take a long time. I will be too late for the graduation ceremony.”
The manager felt very bad. But Frank knew they had to make bread and get it to the supermarkets today, or the supermarkets would turn to a newer bakery. All the workers would lose their jobs.
Frank worked hard to fix the bread oven. At 7:00 am he finished, and the loaves of bread started rolling into the oven to be baked.
“We will be on time for our supermarket deliveries!” The manager was very happy. “You can go now,” he said to Frank. “Enjoy your son’s graduation.”
“It’s too late,” said Frank sadly. “I cannot drive there in time.”

A young woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for London because she got a new job there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English gentleman — polite, modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous about her new life.
With several long hours before her flight, the woman hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to sit. She took out the book and started to read. Although she was absorbed in her book, she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold(大胆的)as he could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between them. Educated to be well-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn’t get that hint (暗示), since he didn’t stop grabbing the cookies.
“How annoying!” she thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman munched (用力咀嚼) some cookies and watched the clock.
She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, “If I weren’t so nice, I would blacken his eyes.” With each cookie she took, he took one, too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought, “Oh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn’t he even show any gratitude?”
She had never known when she had been so angry, and sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed for the gate quickly, refusing to look back at the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book, which was almost complete.

Third Grader Miya was sitting by the desk thinking about her composition. At the end of each year, the students will be given a writing task about the person(s) he/she is most thankful to. Miya could remember she wrote about her parents, who loved her and took care of her in grade one and her teacher, who encouraged her to be brave to raise questions in grade two. This year, she was supposed to write about somebody else. But who? The composition will be due next week. Miya racked her brains (绞尽脑汁) but still had no idea.
Looking up from her empty composition paper, Miya noticed that the other students were collecting their books and getting ready to go home. She decided to give up thinking and get on her way back home. Who knows? Maybe a good idea might come to her mind the next day.
Just at that time, John ran into the classroom and came up to Miya. John is head of the school drama club, in which Miya is a new member.
“Miya, I would like you to play a role in the drama show.” said John.
Miya agreed gladly. She loved drama and had always been dreaming of making her appearance on the stage.
Then John introduced the drama to her. It was about the adventure of three boys to the wild west. Miya was supposed to play a small role, a farm girl who discovered the hungry boys, invited them to the farm and treated them with corn bread.
She was to appear at the ending part of the drama and her lines were short and easy: Hi, buddies. You look weak. Would you like to come with me? Mom is making corn bread. It’s the most delicious in the world. Surely Miya wouldn’t have any problem remembering them. Everything went on well and the big day arrived three days later.
The drama show attracted a large audience. The hall was crowded with excited students and teachers. The three older boys went on stage and started their “adventure” to the wild west.

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton's poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian's slow response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team, they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

When my father reported that he had just purchased a new house in new housing development, we were all overjoyed. For a long time, he had wished to purchase his own home. My parents had been living in several rental houses since they married. Finally, his fantasy had come true. We began moving our belongings into our new home on a bright and sunny Sunday morning. My father hired a lorry to transfer our goods, and I was amazed at how much we had. The lorry had to make three journeys before most of our belongings arrived at our new home. I enjoyed sitting in the back of the lorry while it made the excursions. My parents, grandmother, elder sister, and I were the only members of our family. However, the number of goods was surprising.
We had a busy day loading the items onto the lorry and then unloading them at our new home, but that was not the end of the story. We had to move the things into the house and arrange them properly before we could call the house a home. Our new house was a single-story house. It contained three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, two bathrooms, a small kitchen, a small front porch, and an even smaller garden. Modern dwellings (住宅) are extremely small for room, but it was better than nothing. In any case, it was a significant improvement over our former home, which was much smaller than the new one.
The kitchen was the first area we started organizing things. We needed to take care of our tummies (胃) before we could do any more work, so my mother set about creating her first meal in her brand-new kitchen, making the greatest tasting instant lunch I’d ever tasted. We moved on to the rest of our belongings after lunch. My parents got the largest bedroom, my grandmother and sister got the second largest, and I got the tiniest, right close to the kitchen.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in “How terrible,” I heard myself saying “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face.

I was four years old in 1993, when my family emigrated .(移民) from the United Arab Emirates to Toronto. Young enough to be changed by my new home, but old enough to know I was different from everyone around me. I was the only Arab and only Muslim in my junior kindergarten class. Beyond those obvious differences, Canadian life proved to be quite distinct in other ways. And I discovered another surprise that December.
Overnight, everything was suddenly covered in red and green. My classmates talked excitedly about cookies and what gifts they’d asked Santa for that Christmas. At some point, I must have asked myself, “What is Christmas?” There’s nothing quite like it in the Muslim world. The closest comparison might be Eidal-Adha, which translates from Arabic to “Festival of sacrifice”. While both holidays show the same spirit of sharing with the less fortunate and spending time with loved ones, Eid meant new clothes and a family dinner. And that was about it. No tree decorated with ornaments (装饰物), and no gifts covered in wrapping paper.
Christmas was completely foreign to me, but then my parents unexpectedly informed me that Santa would be paying us a visit on Christmas Eve. “But aren’t we Muslim?” I asked.
“Yes, but Santa loves all children equally and gets them all gifts,” my mother replied.
So on that first Christmas Eve in Canada, she hung oversized red and white stockings, each one customized with our names, off our bedposts. I have a distinct memory of the restless expectation that kept me awake long after bedtime and my joy when I got up on Christmas morning to find my stocking filled with gifts.
Still in my pyjamas(睡衣), I ran over to the kitchen to tell my parents that Santa had indeed visited us last night. I asked if they’d seen him, and Mom said, “Of course!” Mom offered Santa a cup of coffee, as is the Arab custom when hosting guests. He needed the energy for the long night ahead, she told me.
When I returned to school after the holidays. I had a story to share with my classmates. Santa had visited me too! I could show off gifts while other kids showed off theirs.

I was at Lens Crafters waiting to pick up my new pair of glasses. A mom as well as her little girl walked in. The mom was probably in her late twenties and the little girl was about five.
Both of their clothes were badly dated to say the least. It was obvious that the family’s financial windfall (意外之财) had not yet arrived. I overheard a comment the comment made to the saleslady that she was in between job 1 and job 2 of the day, so she didn't have a lot of time.
The little girl and the mom proceeded around the store looking at these little tiny frames for the girl’s face. The saleslady was helping them try on frames and pulling aside her favorites.
You knew how some little kids actually looked ten times cuter in glasses, and so the little girl did. She found these cute little frames with a butterfly on them. She was so happy, smiling from ear to ear while she looked at herself in the mirror.
The saleslady rang the glasses up on the till (收银台). The mom pulled out a coupon (优惠券), and the saleslady stared blankly at the coupon. She then explained that for some reason this coupon could not be used, pointing out the miniscule (极小的) words printed at the bottom.
Then the mom chatted back and forth for a bit with the saleslady and then finally leaned down to her daughter and explained to her that there would be no glasses that day, maybe next month she said.
The little girl’s eyes started to tear up. The mom leaned a little closer and told her it would be OK and that she needed a little more time to save up for them. The little girl responded, “But Mommy, I can’t see and I want to be able to see when I start school next week. I want to do well, Mommy! What if I’m in the back?”

    参考答案
    1.        Usually the workers talked a lot and laughed, but today, everyone was very quiet. They felt sorry that Frank was going to fail to meet his son on this special day because of the maintenance. They were so grateful for what Frank had done for them that they concentrated more attentively on their work than usual in order to make more delicious bread, for which the factory would win a better reputation and thus make a healthier profit. Meanwhile, though eager to be with his son, Frank attempted to keep calm as if it had been a common day to relieve his co-workers. The manager could really feel how Frank felt. He kept wondering what he could do for him. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him.
“Fly to the university?” the manager remembered his old friend, a helicopter company manager. Jumping with joy, he got in touch with his friend right away and succeeded in renting a helicopter, with which he could make Frank’s day. The workers were all relieved to see this surprise. With all the wishes from his co-workers, Frank managed to arrive at the university in time and spent great time with his son on this big day. After hearing what happened, “Dad, you really taught me a significant lesson that I’ll never forget today. You did right. You are my hero. I’ll always try to do something meaningful for others whenever I can.” the son said with pride.

3.As Miya waited behind the curtain for her turn to perform, nervousness started to grow insider her. She kept repeating her lines in a low voice and she even found herself trembling. She regretted having accepted the role, wishing in some way that she could escape. Then she heard someone telling her to get ready and the curtain in front of her was pulled. Miya heard applauds from the audience but she just found it impossible to open her mouth and move her legs. She stood there, unable to say a word. The three boys looked at her anxiously and there was silence among the audience.
Miya was about to cry, when she saw John, who played one of the three boys, coming up to her. He bent over her, patted her on the back, saying, “Hi, buddy. We are hungry. Can you tell us where we can get some food?” Without realizing how she made it, Miya replied, “Would you like to come with me? Mom is making corn bread. It’s the most delicious in the world.” With great delight, the three boys accepted Miya’s invitation and followed her to the “farm”. The drama show was a great success. Miya was grateful to John for his clever response and she finally got an idea of what to write about for her composition.

    4. A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind. “Why not give grandpa a surprise?” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something. Glancing at grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my 1ife. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain: it’d definitely stick in mine.

Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s time for me to make an apology to Landy.” Catherine thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said. “Hi, Landy. I’m sorry about the spaghetti thing.” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. “I know it hurts you. Can you forgive us?” She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.

I’m here to help you.”   At this time, I realized the mistakes I had made before. I shouldn’t be too confident in myself. I should have humbly trained more with my teammates. 9.My parents kept our Christmas tradition going for years, until I was too old to believe in Santa anymore. I never asked them why they went through all that bother, but I suspect they did it so we could feel like we belonged in our new country. Creating a sense of belonging is an important thing. It influences physical and mental health. But you can’t force yourself to belong somewhere. That belonging comes from a change within you, from a willingness to be part of something.
As an adult, I’ve come to realize creating a sense of belonging is joining in traditions. The specifics of Christmas, from Jesus to Santa, are all irrelevant in a sense. What matters is that Christmas gives us an excuse to bring people together to share in the love that unites us. So perhaps, when I have kids of my own one day. I’ll revive the family tradition and invite Santa over for a cup of coffee before he leaves my kids in their stockings.
