Once upn a time there was a king wh ften thught, “Nthing gd can cme t a natin whse peple nly cmplain and expect thers t slve their prblems.” One day, he had an idea.Early ne mrning, the king disguised himself and went t a lcal village. He placed a large stne in the middle f the main street and hid gld cins under the stne. Then he hid behind a huge maple tree and watched. The first persn dwn the street was a milkman with his cart. He crashed int the stne, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fl put this stne here?” he shuted. He picked himself up and angrily went away. After a while, a grup f wmen came alng, each balancing a pt f water n her head. One wman tripped ver the stne and her water pt went crashing t the grund. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nr her friends thught abut mving the stne ut f the rad.
THE STONE IN THE ROAD
The king watched all day as many peple cmplained abut the stne, but he fund nbdy making an attempt t mve it. The king was in despair. “Is there n ne in this village wh feels any respnsibility t keep their neighburs frm harm?”Just then, the king saw a yung girl cming alng. She was the daughter f a lcal farmer. She had been wrking all day and was very tired. But when she saw the stne, she said t herself, “This stne is a danger t anyne wh cmes dwn the street after dark. I’ll mve it ut f the way.”The girl pushed the stne with all her might. After a great deal f effrt, she finally succeeded in mving it t the side f the street. Imagine her surprise when she saw the gld cins where the stne had been!Just then, the king stepped ut frm behind the tree. “Oh sir,” the girl said, “des this gld belng t yu? If nt, we surely must find the wner, fr he will certainly miss it.”The king said, “My dear, the gld is mine. I put it in the rad and mved the stne ver it. Nw the gld is yurs, because yu are the nly persn wh has learnt the lessn I wanted t teach my peple.”
He put a huge stne in the middle f a rad, and watched t see if anyne wuld mve it.
Mst f the peple just gt upset that the stne was in their way.
She thught that the mney belnged t smene else and that it shuld be returned.

1. What d yu think this fable is trying t tell us? D yu think the king was wise? Why r why nt?
The mral f the stry is that we shuld all take respnsibility fr ur cmmunity. I dn’t think that the king was very wise, hwever, because n ne learnt anything frm his experiment. The milkman, the wman with her water pt, and the ther villagers cntinued n their travels withut having changed their attitudes at all. The king did find ne respnsible yung girl, but she was already a respnsible persn befre she encuntered the stne in the rad.
2. Can yu think f times in yur wn life when yu felt and acted like the girl r like the ther peple in the stry? Give examples.
There have been times when I have acted respnsibly like the girl in the stry. Fr example, I recently saw sme children playing n a dangerus balcny, and s I warned them it was dangerus and had them g smewhere else t play. Hwever, ften I’m mre like the milkman in the stry because I’m very busy with my wn wrk and wrries.
4. Write a review f the fable. Use the utline belw t help yu.
Write a review
The main purpse f a review is t give yur pinin abut a piece f writing. Yu shuld first give a shrt descriptin f the writing, and then clearly state yur pinin and yur reasns.
Write a review:Example
“The Stne in the Rad” is an ld fable abut a king wh thinks his peple are lazy, s he puts a large stne in the middle f the rad and hides and waits t see if anyne will try t mve it.The authr used this stry t impress upn readers the need t take persnal respnsibility fr prblems in the cmmunity. The stry was quite successful in achieving its purpse, and I liked it because it had a clear mral.Hwever, while the mral f the stry is clear, the actins f the king seemed pintless t me, because nne f the characters in the stry learnt anything. Fr this reasn, I think there are better stries that can be used t impress upn peple the need fr persnal respnsibility.
✔ Des the writer give a shrt descriptin f the stry?✔ Des the descriptin include the mst imprtant details f the stry?✔ Des the writer give his/her pinin abut the characters r their actins?✔ Is the review well-rganised?✔ Des the writer use the -ing frm as the adverbial in the review?✔ Are there any grammar, spelling, r punctuatin errrs?
5. Exchange drafts. Use the checklist t give feedback n yur partner’s draft.
