I canHow could life of the past be able to survive for centuries without this telling of stories and information to the listening ears of the youth?

Just the other day, our Uncle Martin came to visit with his two kidsAs we sat around the kitchen table sharing stories and family remembrances, Uncle Martin’s laughter filled the roomHe recalled several times that he was lucky to have not been hit by the falling treesEach person in the room listened and enjoyed his details and humor

Generally, the blues are often associated with unhappy thingsFor example, if you lose your job, you might want to listen to the bluesAlthough the blues often deal with unhappy personal things, the music itself goes far beyond selfpityThe blues is also about overcoming hard luck, saying what you feel, ridding yourself of sadness, making you relaxed, and simply having fun

The blues has deep roots in American history, particularly AfricanAmerican historyThe blues began in Southern plantations(大农场) in the 19th centuryIts inventors were slaves, exslaves and the children of slaves—AfricanAmerican sharecroppers(佃农) who sang as they worked in the cotton and vegetable fields

The blues grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazzBlues and jazz have always influenced each other, and they still influence each other in many ways todayUnlike jazz, the blues didn’t spread out quickly from the South to the Midwest until the 1930s and 1940sWhen the Delta blues made their way up the Mississippi to urban areas, the music developed into electrified Chicago blues, other regional blues styles, and various jazzblues hybridsAbout ten years later, the blues gave birth to rhythms(节奏) ‘n’ blues and rock ‘n’ roll

No single person invented the blues, but many people said they had discovered different styles of the bluesFor example, a bandleader, WCHandy insisted that the blues was first shown to him in 1903 by a street guitarist at a train station in Tutwiler, Mississippi

During the middle to late 1800s, the Deep South was home to hundreds of important bluesmen who helped to shape the musicUnfortunately, much of this original music followed these sharecroppers to their gravesBut the music of these earliest blues pioneers can still be heard in the recordings of 1920s and 1930s from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and other Southern states

BIt often tells sad personal stories

DIt is mainly about overcoming hard luck

6What’s the relationship between the blues and jazz?

AThe blues gave birth to jazz

    BThey have influenced each other

CThey usually have the same rhythm

DJazz made the blues popular in the Mississippi Delta

7What happened to the Delta blues after entering urban areas?

    AIt became less popular then

    BIt developed into different styles

    CIt created many different rhythms

DIt was replaced by other regional musical styles

8What is the passage mainly about?

    AThe history of the blues

    BThe changes of the blues

    CThe pioneers of the blues

    DThe invention of the blues

    V. 读后续写

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In the busy city of New York, such an amazing thing ever happened. On a cold Friday night, a poor artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his violin. The young violinist was a student at an Arts College named Joseph, who did so every day in order to earn his tuition fees. He planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna and had booked the flight the next morning. Though the music was great, people were quickly going home for the weekend. Joseph was playing his last chapter when a middle aged man looking pretty excited slowed down his pace and put 50 dollars into the hat, for which Joseph was grateful.

The next night, the young artist came to the gate of the subway station as usual, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he began playing the violin.

Before long,  the young artist was surrounded with many passersby,  who were all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an unexpected thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it as soon as possible.”

It caused a great excitement and curiosity. They were dying to know what the unexpected thing could be. After about half an hour, a middle aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s  you. You did come here. I knew that you are an honest man and would certainly come here.”

The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr George Sang

The man nodded. The violinist asked,  “Did you lose something

Lottery.  It's lottery” replied the man.

The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was seen. “Is it” he asked.

George nodded promptly and seized the lottery ticket and kissed it, and then he danced with Joseph注意:

    Paragraph 1

Thestoryturnedouttobethis: GeorgeSangisanordinaryofficeclerk. He bought a lottery ticket the other day. To his surprise, he was exactly the lucky dog. Overjoyed, George took out 50 dollars when hearing wonderful music on his way home. However, the lottery ticket was also thrown in. When Joseph was cleaning up his hat after ending a day's work, he found the unexpected thing. Thinking the owner must be anxious, he cancelled the flight and returned to where he was given the lottery ticket.

    Paragraph 2

This was the scene just now. Out of curiosity, some passersby asked Joseph why he didn't take it for himself since he was badly in need of money. Joseph answered, “It goes without saying that if I took it in a dishonest way, I would succeed temporarily. But in the long run, I am bound to be a loser.” Just as the saying goes, honesty is the best policy. Therefore we should bear in mind that being honest is what makes us a good man.
