The bld grup systems refer t the types f the specific antigens n the cell membranes f the erythrcytes. Generally speaking, there are tw majr bld grup systems, that is, the ABO bld grup system and Rh bld grup system.
In the ABO bld grup system, the bld is divided int fur bld types — A, B, O and AB accrding t the antigens n the cell membranes f the erythrcytes. The persns with type A bld have A antigens; thse with type B have B antigens; thse with type AB have bth A and B antigens; and thse with type O have neither A nr B antigens.
The substances that react with the antigens are tw kinds f bld grup antibdies — anti-A antibdy and anti-B antibdy. The feature f the distributin f the bld grups antibdies in the ABO bld grup system is that the plasma des nt cntain the antibdies which may react with the antigens n cell membranes f the erythrcytes. The persns with type O bld are called universal dnrs because the plasma f type A, B and AB has n antibdies t type O. Cnversely, thse with type AB bld are called universal recipients because their plasma has n antibdies t the antigens f the ther three types.
In the Rh bld grup system, there are five kinds f antigens—D, C, c, E and e. Antigen D has the greatest antigenicity. S the bld is divided int tw bld grups—Rh-psitive and Rh-negative accrding t whether it has antigen D n the cell membranes f the erythrcytes. Rh-psitive refers t that with antigen D n the cell membranes f the erythrcytes, whereas, Rh-negative refers t that withut antigen D n the cell membranes f the erythrcytes.
Befre a bld transfusin is perfrmed, the ABO bld grups must be identified by the crss-matching test t assure the cmpatibility f the bld grups between the dnatrs and recipients.
