Last summer, the missing white-letter hairstreak butterfly was sptted in Sctland fr the first time in 133 years. Cnservatinists wndered if the creature had established a breeding clny in the cuntry. As Russell Jacksn reprts fr the Sctsman, vlunteer naturalists recently fund a cluster f tiny white-letter hairstreak eggs n an elm tree in Lennel, a small village near the cuntry f Berwick-shire.
Vlunteers with the UK's Butterfly Cnservatin have been carefully tracking white-letter hairstreak migratins fr mre than ten years. The butterfly is native t the UK and was nce widespread in England and Wales. But white-letter hairstreak numbers have declined drastically in recent decades, largely due t an utbreak f Dutch elm disease, and illness that tk hld in the 1960s. The disease has killed millins f British elm trees, which is the fd surce fr white-letter hairstreak caterpillars (蝴蝶或蛾的幼虫).
Recently, there have been signs that the butterfly’s ppulatins are recvering. The Butterfly Cnservatin team has bserved the white-letter hairstreak gradually spreading nrthwards, pssibly due t warming climates. But the white-letter hairstreak is still a very rare sight in Sctland, and the vlunteers wh fund the cluster f eggs—Ken Haydck and Jill Mills—were thrilled by the discvery.
“It was a lvely sunny mrning and we were searching the elm trees by the River Tweed at Lennel when Jill called me ver,” Haydck says in a Butterfly Cnservatin statement, “I culd see by the lk n her face that she had fund smething. We were bth smiling with disbelief and delight when we realized what Jill had fund and within secnds I was fumbling in my pack fr the camera—my hands were shaking!”
That Haydck and Mills managed t spt the eggs is quite remarkable; accrding t Vittria Traverse f Atlas Obscura, white-letter hairstreak eggs are smaller than a grain f salt. The vlunteers were als excited t discver an ld, hatched eggshell amid the cluster f new eggs. Accrding t the Butterfly Cnservatin, this suggests that the white-letter hairstreak culd have been breeding in the area since at least 2016.
Paul Kirkland, the directr f the Butterfly Cnservatin's Sctland chapter, says in the statement that cnservatinists will “need t have a few mre years f cnfirmed sightings” befre they can classify the white-letter hairstreak as a resident species f Sctland. “If this happens, it wuld take the ttal number f butterflies fund in Sctland t 34,” he says, “which really wuld be smething t celebrate.”
    28. What mainly accunted fr the sharp decrease f the special butterfly species?
    A. An utbreak f the butterfly disease. B. A great lss due t its mass migratin.
    C. The mass death f British elm trees. D. The cnsequence f glbal warming.

    C. Jill made the discvery first and tk a pht f it.
    D. They felt it unbelievable t make their discvery.

The cld, wet weather f winter ften puts ut any wildfires that are still burning. But nt in the far Nrth areas, such as Alaska, Canada, and ther parts f Nrth America. Sme frest fires just dn't die in these places. Think f the fires as “zmbies”: Scientists d. When summers are warmer than nrmal, sme fires can hide thrugh the winter. They burn dead plant matter and sils under snw. In May 2021, scientists reprted their wrk t a scientific jurnal. The scientists saw that zmbie fires are rare but they culd becme mre cmmn as the wrld warms, the study warns.
“Sme years, new fires were starting very clse t the previus year's fire,” explains Rebecca Schlten. She studies Earth and envirnmental sciences at Vrije University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The new fires made scientists wnder hw ften fires might survive the winter. The scientists started by cmbing thrugh firefighter reprts. Then they cmpared these with satellite images f Alaska and nrthern Canada. The scientists lked fr fires that began clse t fires frm the year befre. They als fcused n blazes starting befre the middle f summer. Randm lightning r human actins spark mst fires in the area, Schlten says. But thse fires happen later in the year.
Zmbie fires caused less than 1 percent f the ttal area burned by fires frm 2002 t 2018. But it changed frm year t year. Take 2008, fr example. A zmbie fire burned Alaska that year. It caused almst ne-third f fire damage that year. One clear pattern emerged: Zmbie fires were mre likely t happen after very warm summers. High temperatures may allw fires t reach mre deeply int the sil. Such deep burns are mre likely t survive t spring.
The zmbie fire threat culd grw. The climate is warming. Frests in the far Nrth already are warming faster. “We're seeing mre ht summers and mre large fires and intense burning,” Schlten says. Plus, zmbie fires culd cause mre issues. The fires release huge amunts f greenhuse gases. These trap heat in the Earth, s atmsphere. The atmsphere is a layer f gases that surrund the Earth. Schlten's research culd help fire management. Firefighters wuld knw t check fr them after warm summers.
    32. What may lead t zmbie fires accrding t the passage?
    A. wet weatherB. htter summers
    C. lw temperaturesD. cld winters
    33. What can we learn abut zmbie fires frm Paragraph 2?

    B. It is f little use cmparing firefighter reprts with satellite images.
    C. Where flames brke ut prvided the clue.
    D. Zmbie fires are less likely t happen after very warm summers.
    34. What cnclusin will be pssibly made based n the last paragraph?
    A. Firefighters cannt d much t stp the zmbie fires.
    B. We still have much t learn abut the warming climate.
    C. It is imprtant t understand zmbie fires.
    D. Zmbie fires are likely t get much better.

    A. “Zmbie” wildfires d great damage t land
    B. “Zmbie” wildfires sparked by human actins
    C. “Zmbie” wildfires release greenhuse gases
    D. “Zmbie” wildfires reappear after wintering undergrund
