(2022·广东省深圳市六校高三第一次联考)One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you OK?”“Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal(燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help? First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks,
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothing inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine, Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START." Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes, He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

But he remembered there was no pink dress in the laundry basket. “Where did it come from?” Jeremy wondered, reaching into the washer to take out more clothes. Then much to his astonishment, he pulled out two T-shirts, both in light pink. Realizing there was something wrong, Jeremy stood frozen, his heart sinking. While racking his brain for reasons, he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for the accident. With no means of handling the situation, Jeremy was in such a panic that he even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. “That isn't a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally, he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Holding the neatly folded pink dress, Jeremy nervously knocked at his mom's bedroom door again. After what seemed like ages, he came to the bedside, his head drooping. Sensing his son's unease, his mother inquired with concern what was wrong. “ Sorry mom, I shouldn't have ruined your favorite dress.” Jeremy apologized. Stuttering out the mistake he had made, he was ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what's going on, mom smiled understandingly at Jeremy,“ Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help.” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone,“ You know what? I think it looks nice.” At this Jeremy beamed with relief, making a silent vow to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.

(2022·湖南省长沙长郡中学高三月考)It was a rainy November morning. Overcome with anger I knew if I didn't leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.
He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes still on the table. “Don't you have enough to do? I can take care of myself.” I stormed out, not even kissing him goodbye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut(捷径)。
Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.
The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home cooked meal and a good night's sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal(燕麦片)for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.
Ten minutes later, ignoring Joe's warning I turned off the main route(道路),I thought it hadn't rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn't risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed, the car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks(喇叭声)。

Looking over my shoulder, I stared into the flashing lights of a truck. It was Joe! I couldn't help bursting into tears. Joe shouted to me not to be frightened. Then he threw a thick rope so that I could hang on to it and walk straight toward him. I opened the door, grabbed it and inched out. However, a sudden fall left me in the rushing water. I struggled to my feet, only to find a branch blocking the way right in front of me.
I screamed that I couldn't make it. Joe, however, remained calm! He urged me to take one step at a time and assured me I could make it. I moved forward slowly and cautiously before I fell into his arms. Sobbing against his chest, I apologized that I shouldn't have taken the shortcut. Joe patted me saying his primary concern was my safety. Only then did I realize Joe actually understood how to take care of me despite his trouble with the housework.

(2022·湖南省长沙雅礼中学高三摸底考试)It was somewhere between spring and summer. My mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out(快速跳出来) of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared-empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist ( 前台接待员)。”“What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn't gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

We were worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, Mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed us what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received it. While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired.
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.

(2022·重庆实验外国语学校高三摸底考试)Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.
She'd checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.
The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant. Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face. Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.
She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge(山脊)toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Suddenly, she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers-typically not the type for hiking.
Meanwhile, Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.

Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not. If she chose to follow the tracks, she'd add time and risk to her hiking. But the tracks ahead suggested someone might be in danger. She couldn't let this go. She called out into the frozen fog,“ Is anybody out there? Do you need help?” The strong winds carried her voice away. Then she walked cautiously in the direction of the tracks. She rounded a corner and spotted a man sitting motionlessly.
Her searching now turned into rescuing the man. She approached him instantly and found he was suffering from frostbite on his feet. Without any hesitation, she covered his body with warm clothes, and then poured him some sugary drink. The wind roared over and they would die soon if they didn't get out of there. She supported the man and inched along the trail. With great efforts, Bales managed to save the man's life. Exhausted, she felt that it was all worth it.

(2022·江苏省如皋市高三调研)COVID-19 made “social distance” a big problem for 2020 and forced us to adapt in new and often creative ways. My super-social teenage daughters adapted by talking to their friends on video chat; school campuses closed but adapted with online classes.
However, social distance with my parents added an extra challenge. We'd recently moved them (very old) into the house across the street from us. It was wonderful to have them so close, but once COVID-19 arrived, everything changed.
How could we care for and interact with my parents but keep social distance at the same time? I could buy their groceries, and leave them on their doorstep-that would be easy. But meeting their social needs was another matter. They did not use computers or smartphones, so there had to be another way to connect with them. After much thought, my daughters decided we could reach out with beautiful cards, letters and pictures...and one of our dogs could deliver them!
We'd read in the news that although animals could be carriers of the virus, the likelihood was low, so we felt excited about the prospect of our new delivery method, The question wan, which dog wan bent suited for the job? We considered each one carefully: Tootsie, Stevie or Stuffy, we decided to give Tootsie the first shot at it. We tied a small package loosely over her head and sent her toward my parents' door. Holding our breath, we watched as she approached the house.
Suddenly, she turned left, made a beeline for a large dirt patch(小块土地),shook the package from her neck, and started to bury it, but stopped by our shouts of dismay.
Little Stevie was up next. He had more focus; surely he could do the job. With the package affixed to his back, we set him on course. Stevie looked strong going in. He ran toward the door and nearly made it, but then a lizard(蜥蜴) ran in front of him. Chasing lizards is Stevie's favorite pas- time, so we knew all bets were off. Sure enough, Stevie chased that lizard all over the yard and then went running down the street. I watched with disappointment as my daughters disappeared after him.

Later, we were ready for a final go-Stuffy, The vet had recently told us that he needed to go on a diet. He was our last choice. But Stuffy loved to chase his ball, so maybe there was hope. We tied him up with the package and walked him across the street. My daughter threw a ball toward my parents' front door, and Stuffy bounded along the path. My parents opened their door just as Stuffy reached the threshold, and they successfully removed the package from his back as we all cheered and jumped up and down for Stuffy. Mission accomplished!
Stuffy received treats (healthy carrots) and seemed truly proud of himself. He did well and we enjoyed it so much that he continued to deliver cards, pictures and little items to my parents every day. We called him our Ding Dong Doggy, even though we have yet to teach him to ring the doorbell. Meanwhile, we were grateful that Stuffy made it possible for us to adapt to the new situation and bond with our parents in a creative way. As Stuffy lost its weight due to the rigorous exercise, we all joked running errands at this special time created an all-win situation.

A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents' bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony(小马),had to be sold. Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn't eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn't care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy's looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛),an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn't feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn't need to. I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky's smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地)。We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with ease.

My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy's big red neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped around it and with perfect precision rounded the second and thundered on to the third. We tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. With the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy horse! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I'd always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.

(2022·山东师大附中高三摸底考试)Paula is a 55-year-old woman living in New Jersey. She lives a happy life without concern for financial or social problems and she constantly shares laughs with her family and friends. About ten years ago, her husband Michael gave her a gold ring with a diamond in it on their 20th wedding anniversary. She cherished it very much and wore it every day.
Having been married for almost 30 years, Paula had everything set for herself, and knew that her life in New Jersey was a thrilling one. One day, Paula was in the bathroom cleaning everything up, from the sink to the floor. She wanted to keep her house clean and beautiful. As soon as Paula finished washing the bathtub, she moved on to the part she feared most: the toilet. Wanting to get it out of the way, she quickly cleaned the inside of the toilet with a brush, and flushed(冲走) the soap away. After finishing, she felt there was something wrong, but she couldn't think of what it was.
Paula's heart skipped a beat when she noticed that her left ring finger felt a bit lighter. She slowly looked down at her ring finger, hoping that her treasured anniversary gift was still on it. She was frightened to see that it was lost. She didn't notice that she flushed it down the toilet.
Paula said, “I must have flushed it down. It had been a little big on my finger, because it was winter time and my hands were smaller. I felt so bad about it. Sad and embarrassed,"
She couldn't believe that she just let thousands of dollars go down the drain(下水道),literally, She searched the bathroom and even the house, hoping that she just dropped if somewhere and forgot about it. She even took apart the toilet and searched the inside pipes with a flashlight, but in vain. Paula had no idea how to explain this to her husband. To buy the ring, Michael worked extra hard before the anniversary, so to tell him the bad news wan unimaginable for Paula.

Michael was worried, but listened. With her eyes looking away from embarrassment, Paula cried and told her husband the ring was flushed down the toilet. Paula had mentally prepared herself for what could possibly be the toughest conversation with her husband ever. But Michael was quiet through the entire explanation, and this put Paula off.
After finishing her explanation, Paula wiped away her tears and waited for Michael to say something. She thought he would get mad at her. However, Michael's face didn't show any anger. Suddenly, he interrupted the silence by giving her a hug. Paula was completely shocked by Michael's reaction to the situation. After all, she lost the ring he had given her to celebrate their anniversary. Michael told Paula that he would buy her another ring, exactly like the one she lost. Paula felt greatly moved.

(2022·武汉市部分学校高三质量检测)The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat my father to a special meal. I glanced through the cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as he left for work.
As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dad loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was sticky dough(面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face him laughing at my work.
I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Dad got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing.
Looking out, I saw Dad standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in the rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder.
Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast(酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the “living thing" was
and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Dad or me.

My dad tapped me gently on the shoulder, and we went inside. Sitting back to our Cornish chicken, Dad, smilingly, updated me on recent events at his work without a mere mention of the crazy dough wildly dancing outside, which served wonderfully as a gentle embarrassment reliever. However, while doing the dishes after dinner, Dad said to me with firmness in his voice, “You don't have to be an expert to make bread, but you do have to do your research before taking actions. There is no such thing as an easy way out.” And that was the starting point of my journey with making the perfect bread.
At a party three months later, everyone wanted to try my bread. The rest of the night slipped away, filled with inquiries about my secret recipe. Yet, hardly was there a different answer other than,“ Beauty comes from balance and patience.” To be frank, that was exactly what Id learnt during my numerous experiments. An amazing loaf of bread required suitable balance of ingredients to mix as well as enormous patience of waiting for the dough to rise. Countless were my failures to make tasty bread, every single moment of it was cherished. Along the journey, I've developed from the man whose dough sighs in a dustbin to the man whose bread makes your taste but dance.

(2022·山东省肥城市高三第一次摸底考试)I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother" Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kirstie, come here," my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry's book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn't wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother's love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot(绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It's the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn't use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn't seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring(束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “Knot a problem. You are my sister," he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.

(2022·江苏省泰州市高三第一次调研考试)When my son Mike begged us to adopt the black-and-white cat, Daisy, we already had Pepper, a seven-year-old gray cat. We couldn't resist our nine-year-old's request. The kitty came home with us that day.
Daisy was naughty. She loved being around the boy and his friends, hanging out in the basement where they played video games or watched television. Sometimes, she explored the basement, jumping up on the bar, going into the small bathroom, and nosing around the laundry room. She'd travel the areas as if on a quest. Then, just when the boys would be at the height of their video game, she'd jump up in front of the screen, disrupting their play. She climbed on their backs, going from shoulder to shoulder.
One evening, our sons, Joe and Mike, were in the basement watching TV when I heard, “Mom! There's a snake in the window well.”
“A snake? How do you know?” I stood at the head of the stairs to the basement, listening.
“It's near the window. We can hear it. There's a strange sound. Listen!”
Grabbing a flashlight and a plastic grocery bag, I headed downstairs to capture the snake. I climbed onto a chair near the window well, turned on the flashlight and looked cautiously through the curtain, I saw nothing but a few spider webs. I listened. Suddenly, a loud sound came from the ceiling. Something was in the ventilation duct(通风管道)。The sound grew louder and more frequent. I paused.
What was making the noise? Could it be a snake like the boys suspected? Pepper had killed a few snakes and brought them home to show us. I told myself that, if it were a snake, it was probably harmless since rattle-snakes aren't common in Omaha, Nebraska, If seemed too noisy to be a snake.

It was apparent that the boys would be no help. Sitting in the sofa, Joe had drawn a blanket up to his shoulders and Mike stared at me wide-eyed. I took a deep breath and pointed the flashlight toward the spot where I'd heard the sound. The sound grew louder and more intense as I aimed the flashlight toward the window well. My heart raced as the “snake” was close. By the light of the flashlight, I saw something moving.
At the sight of it, I relaxed immediately. When I saw a little white and black paw reached down, I called. “Daisy!" She'd seen the light and followed it, making her way to the window well. The boys jumped up from the sofa and ran over to me to have a closer look. It turned out that naughty Daisy got lost in the ventilation duet while exploring. We all laughed at the scare she'd given us. And that may be a little punishment for her naughtiness.
What would happen next?

(2022·山东省枣庄市重点高中高三摸底考试)Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge bunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles l had ever seen.

She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can't wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!

Making friends wan always hand because no one wanted to hang out with the weirdo(怪人)in the class.
I told myself that if I wanted to overcome my problem I had to practice it more. The moment arrived, I wan nervous that it was my time to speak in the group. With a stutter (结巴), my first words came out of my mouth. “Hey my name is Jesus," 1 maid with n strong Mexican accent. After a year of hard work and long practices came my first success in reading. “We are going to do popcorn reading," Mr Cerda said, with a loud voice. I sat there anxiously, part of me hoped he wouldn't call me, but part of me wanted to get the reading over with. Suddenly, I found myself reading the famous words of Dr Seuss,“ You're off to great places. Today is your day! Your Mountain is waiting, so... get on your way!” When I finished reading, all I heard was silence. My classmates were in shock, and I realized my words were as clear as they can be.
A simple “Hey how are you” could be the icebreaker between people. I was a shy kid and I grew up thinking that I was going to be friendless forever. However, I eventually discovered that making friends and meeting new people was actually pretty easy. Whatever the case may be, my grades and ability to speak improved. I participated in tutorials, science fairs, and even competition for academics. All of this became possible when I found confidence in myself because of the inspirational words from Dr Seuss.

(2022·辽宁省名校联盟高三联合考试月考)Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.
Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人)from China.
Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.
After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I can't believe you broke this,” she said.
“Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me. The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.
“I'm sorry I yelled," said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things.” As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.

“Are you sure you want tothrow that out?” he asked. My throat twisted into a knot. “It's broken," I murmured. “That's a simple repair. Come.” In their apartment, Mr Chen spread the broken pieces out like a jigsaw puzzle. After finding each match, he taught me to delicately rebuild the bowl, filling in the crack lines with a special paint. Finally, the bowl was together again. I held it gently in the palm of my hand and admired it for long. Slightly different, it was as beautiful as before. I couldn't wait to show it to Mom and rushed back home.
I brought the repaired bowl into her room. Obviously, she was more than surprised to see the bowl again. “It's amazing” she marveled, running her fingertip over the fixed cracks.“Mr Chen helped me mend it. He is a superb craftsman,” I said with a grin. “Definitely. After being repaired, it looks much stronger than before" said Mom, smiling radiantly. I sat on the edge of her bed, and Mom reached out to me. Our hands joined with crisscrossed fingers, we both knew this was a new beginning.

(2022·江苏省高三第一次百校联考)Many years ago there lived in Holland a boy named Peter. Peter's father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes(堤坝),called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland's canals into the great sea.
One afternoon in the early fall, when Peter was eight years old, his mother called him from his play. “Come, Peter," she said. “I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man. Remember that you shall be home before dark. " The little boy was glad to go on such an errand (跑腿), and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him something about his walk along the dike-the sun, the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's wish that he should return before dark. Bidding his friend goodbye, he set out for home.
As he walked beside the canal, he noticed how the rains had swollen the water, and how they beat against the side of the dike, and he thought of his father's gates. “I am glad they are so strong," he said to himself. “If the dike gave way what should we do? These pretty fields would be covered with water." As he walked along the dike he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road, or to listen to the rabbits' soft tread as they rustled through the grass.
Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike. Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and thrust his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped!“Oh!” he said to himself. “I can keep the water back with my finger. Holland shall not be drowned while I am here.”
This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. “Come here; come here,” he called. But no one heard him; no one came to help him.

It grew still colder, and his arm ached, and began to grow stiff and numb. He shouted again. “Will no one come? Mother! Mother!” But his mother had looked anxiously along the dike road many times since sunset for her little boy, and now she had closed and locked the cottage door, thinking that Peter was spending the night with his blind friend, and that she would scold him in the morning for staying away from home without permission. Peter tried to whistle, but his teeth chattered with the cold. He thought of his brother and sister in their warm beds, and of his dear father and mother. “I must not let them be drowned," he thought. “I must stay here until someone comes.”
The moon and stars looked down on the child crouching (蹲)on a stone on the side of the dike. His head was bent, and his eyes were closed, but he was not asleep. “I'll stand it somehow," he thought. So, he stayed there all night keeping the sea out. Early the next morning a man going to work heard a groan as he walked along the top of the dike. Looking over the edge, he saw a child clinging to the side of the great wall. “ What's the matter?” he called. “ Are you hurt?”“I'm keeping the water back!” Peter yelled. “Tell them to come quickly!” The alarm was spread. People came running with shovels and the hole was soon mended. They carried Peter home to his parents, and before long the whole town knew that he had saved their lives that night.

After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin.“If I don't try harder, I won't grasp this chance." She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?" she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I'm Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight. " Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can't find my music tape!" Linda searched her bag but in vain. “It may be missing on the way." With these words, she then rushed out.

Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda's tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma, “This is my chance to defeat her.” But on a second thought, she changed her mind, “If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something.” She placed it on the chair carefully, leaving a note saying “Take it easy, we are the best.” Soon, it's her turn to come on the stage.
Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, “I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.” But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. To her surprise and relief she saw the tape and Mary's note. With Mary's kindness and encouragement, Linda finished her performance calmly and skillfully. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won everything.

(2022·重庆市南开中学高三第四次质量检测)The five children in Larrane Leech's day care group were outdoors early, painting landscapes under the dizzy sun. By 10 am, it was time to find shade, so Larrane decided they would walk down to the river.
“We're going to pick berries now,” she announced. A nature lover, Larrane insisted they spend as much time as possible outdoors. Larrane handed each child an empty jar and called for Pal, her one-year-old German shepherd(德国牧羊犬)。The group made its way over the dusty road and then onto a dirt path through the trees. They stopped at
the first berry bush and got busy picking berries, cheering and talking excitedly.
A young cougar (美洲狮) cocked an ear toward the birdlike chatter and sniffed the air. Stepping over the thick carpet of pine needles, the cougar moved quietly toward the children.
Larrane sensed the children suddenly go quiet. She looked up to see the back end of a cougar, the size of Pal, standing over one child, Mikey. The sight of the cougar near her kids immediately froze Larrane. Larrane couldn't tell whether Mikey had been bitten. Her mind racing wildly, she darted toward the cougar. Desperately intending to grab its tail, she shifted aim at the last minute and seized the cougar by the neck. She shook it from side to side. Instantly, the cougar wheeled toward Larrane. Growling and hissing, it stretched up high and brought its paws down upon the head of the woman. Although still in its youth, it had all the teeth and muscle a cougar needs to pull down a victim three times its size. This animal was capable of killing her.

Now aware of the danger, the other four children screamed and ran behind Larrane. They picked up branches from the ground and began attacking the cougar. However, their strikes only managed to anger the fierce beast. Letting out a threatening howl, it scratched Larrane head. Blood began to flow down Larrane's face, but she held tightly onto its neck to prevent its deadly bite. Just then, Pal came to her rescue. He sank his sharp teeth into the beast and tore 'open its flesh while dragging it backward. Facing such united enemy, the cougar had to admit defeat and flee.
Larrane rushed to Mikey, who lay quietly on the ground. He was still breathing. “Thank God! He's alive.”Larrane thought in relief, but he was disturbingly still because he was in total shock. “ We have to run home now." She said calmly to the terrified children, “Everything will be all right. " With Mikey on her back and the other children following her, she ran all the way back to the day care center. The other staff helped her put Mikey down on a bed. That was when she finally had time to attend to her wound. Larrane met the greatest challenge of her life head-on and won. Sometimes we have no idea what we can do until we have to make a choice between life and death.

I had moved to Arizona about two weeks before the start of my junior year of high school, so not only was this a new school for me, but also a new state and I did not know anyone.
On the first day of school at lunch after getting my meal, I sat down at a table in the courtyard. As I began to eat, I looked around at the other tables and saw another girl sitting alone, so I decided to go and sit with her. Anyway, there was no reason for me to have a whole table to myself, and who knew maybe I could make a friend. I walked to check and said, “Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?" She was surprised at first, but then smiled and said, “No, I don't!”
We hit it off immediately and became close friends throughout the next two years. Towards the end of our senior year, she told me that she had been accepted to an out-of-state college and would be moving away after graduation. I was sad that I would miss her but at the same time was really happy for her.
She then shared with me something very moving. “Do you remember the first day of school when you came over and sat down with me during lunch?” she asked. “Of course! Why do you ask?” I replied.
She continued, “I want to let you know how special you are and that you make a difference. I was severely depressed that day, because something unhappy had happened to me that morning. I had been being sad since the morning and nobody realized my sadness. It had just broken me down. If you hadn't appeared, I would be probably in deep sadness for a long time after I got home from school.”

She felt lonely and hopeless until I approached her warmly, From then on,we two often learned together and shared happiness and sorrow.
Both of us gained a lot from the incident. She said that it was my company and encouragement that not only made her happy, but also improved her confidence. (2022·广东省高三阶段性质量检测)If there's one thing I can't stand people saying, it is “I'm no good at anything, I don't have any talent”,I just don't buy that at all. To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist. There was a time when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student. I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds, I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned, in just about every other department I was a loser. I wanted to fit in, to be someone and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at. One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field event8. I was a loser in all of them, Then came the javelin(标枪),Suddenly something inside me began saying, "Try it! Try it” I had to wait my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw-the best throw going about 30 yards-I looked at the teacher.
“Hey, Orowitz, you want to try?" he asked.
Embarrassed, I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
“Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin. Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand, I was seized with a strange feeling-a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason, I was relaxed over what I was about to do, even though I'd never done it before. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go. The same voice that had urged me to throw it, now told me it was a good throw.

I watched as the javelin took off. My heart quickened as I saw it continue to sail, 30 yards out, then 40 yards. As it went past the 50- yard mark, it was still going. For a minute nothing was said. I took the javelin back to the gym teacher. “You keep the thing.” he said, still shaking his head in wonder.
That night I took the javelin home with me. The very next day, I began practicing with it, and every day that summer-for six hours or more-I would throw it in a nearby schoolyard. (2022·山东省青岛市第五十八中学高三期中考试)My great grandfather, my grandfather and my father are farmers, and so are all my family. My father has a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I don't agree that I should automatically follow in my father's footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father's friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom's airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.

"Don't worry," said Aunt Lisa. “That's the fun part-learning how to do it!”

“I don't know ...,” said Cali. She wasn't too sure she was going to be able to do it. Sometimes she had a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the happy girl on the box. It did look like fun. Cali imagined herself moving and turning on the ice like a real figure skater.“Okay,” she agreed. “Let's do it!”
The next day Cali went to the skating rink with her aunt and uncle. Her eyes twinkled and her face lit up with excitement as she looked at the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and slipped her feet into the skates. Holding the strings in her fingers, she could not figure out how to tie them up. “I don't know how to do it,” she said. She felt sad that this was another thing she couldn't do.
"Let me show you." Her aunt bent down on one knee, explaining how to put the strings around the small hooks(钩子),Then she tied them into a tight bow, "Now, you do the other skate yourself. I'll help you if you need it." Cali bent over the skate and did what her aunt had showed her. Her tongue stuck out of the side of her mouth as she paid attention. After a few tries, she worked out how to cross the strings around the hooks. Her aunt helped make sure the strings were nice and tight. "You did in!” smiled her aunt, patting Cali on the back.

It seemed like everyone else was zooming past her. She started to get nervous. She lost her balance.
Oof! She fell down, hard. It hurt. She closed her eyes and tried not to cry. In a moment, her uncle was helping her back on feet. He smiled into her eyes. “Everyone falls down the first few times. You just have to get back up again.” Cali took a deep breath. “Okay, I can do this." She skated away from her uncle toward the crowd. As she wobbled, she talked to herself. “ Be brave. Keep going. Small steps. Yes!" She had skated almost all the way around the rink, by herself! Her aunt caught up to her and took her hand. “Look at you! You are working so hard and doing so well. We're proud of you," said Aunt Lisa.
With shoulders shivering, her tears cannot help streaming down her face.(她的双肩哆哆嗦嗦,眼泪情不自禁的从她脸上流下来。)。
1.与所给短文及段落开头语的衔接程度;
2.内容的丰富性;
3.应用语法结构和词汇的丰富性和准确性;
