I was selfish as a teenager. I usually spent my time thinking   about myself and taking care of my own needs. I let my older  brother do most of the work around the house until he left for  college. I let my mom and dad worry about our bills and  problems while I read books, played, and lost myself  in my own  imagination. This didn't change even when I went to college  either. I studied hard but only to make my own life better. Even  when I started to explore my faith, it was only to increase my  own happiness.

I married after graduation and decided to start a family. Of  course, I had no idea what hard knocks reality had in store for  my selfish soul. Soon I found myself unemployed, deeply in  debt, and with a new baby on the way. I found out that life has  little sympathy for spoiled people. In fact, all of the struggles I  was going through were beating the selfishness slowly out of me.

Still, I didn't give up on happiness. I knew that there must  be a way to find it. I finally realized, however, that it had to  include more than just my own needs, wants, and desires. The  answer began to make itself clear one night shortly after my baby  boy was born. I got a bottle and held him in my arms. As I was  feeding him I looked down and saw his big, innocent, trusting  eyes. I smiled and talked to him. Then he smiled and I could  feel my heart growing, expanding with love. I felt such peace  and joy. At that moment I had a hint of the truth:  it is by  growing our hearts with love that we find our happiness.

Carolyn Arends wrote“The more people you let into your   heart, the bigger your heart gets. The more love you get, the  more love you have to give. It just keeps growing.” So, keep  loving, keep living and keep caring. Keep growing your heart  today, tomorrow, and always.

This is my son Matthew's last night at home before college. I know that this is good news. I feel proud that Matthew will go to a great school. I know that this is finest hour. But looking at the suitcases on his bed sends me out of the room to a hidden corner where I can't stop crying.

Through the sorrow, I feel a rising embarrassment. “Pull_yourself_together” I tell myself. There are parents sending their kids off to battle zones. How dare I feel so shocked and upset?

One of the great gifts of my life has been having my boys, Matthew and Johnowen. Through them, I have explored the mysterious, complicated bond between fathers and sons. As my wife and I raised them, I have discovered the love and loss between my father and me. After my parents'  divorce, I spent weekends with my dad in Ohio. By the time Sunday came around, I was unable to enjoy the day's activities because I was already afraid of the goodbye of the evening.

Now, standing among Matthew's accumulation of possessions, I realize it's me who has become a boy again. All my sadness and longing to hold on to things are back, sweeping over me as they did when I was a child.

His bed is tidy and spare. It already has the feel of a guest bed. In my mind I replay wrapping him in his favorite blanket. That was our nightly routine until one evening he said, “Daddy, I don't think I need a blanket tonight.” I think of all the times we lay among the covers reading. I look at the bed and think of all the recent times I was annoyed at how late he was sleeping. I'll never have to worry about that again, I realize.

For his part, Matthew has been a rock. He is treating his leaving as just another day at the office. And I'm glad. After all, someone's got to be strong. I'm proud that he is charging into the first chapter of his adult life with such confidence.

There are plenty of people in the UK for whom even basic English is a problem. According to the survey, 726,000 people in England and Wales said they could not speak English well, and another 138,000 said they did not speak it at all.

Ling, 40, who arrived five years ago from China, found it difficult to learn English. “When I came here, I was pregnant and so I was at home for the next three years. It took me longer to learn as I was very busy with the children.” Eventually she was able to begin taking classes and now speaks good conversational English. But even with classes, it can be a long process to pick up the language.

Age is the most important factor in language study, said Mila Vulchanova, professor of linguistics (语言学) at Norwegian University of Science and Technology. “There is a sensitive period in language learning, which is biologically determined. So the younger the immigrants (移民), the better. Since this decline is only gradual, teenagers are at an advantage over adults” he said.

There are a number of systems for grading English. The government expects immigrants to reach “ESOL Entry 3”or “B1 level” in Scotland, before they can be given citizenship. It is equal to being able to hold a confident conversation and it might take 360 hours of study to achieve.

George Osborne, the UK chancellor (财政大臣), said in June that benefit claimants (申请救济金者) who don't speak English will have their benefits cut if they fail to attend language courses. Huan Japes, deputy chief executive of English UK, a trade body for language colleges, said it needed 360 hours—120 hours for each of three stages—to get to the result the government expected benefit claimants to reach.

“Using 120 hours (for each stage of English fluency) is a rather traditional approach to course book learning” said Dr Elaine Boyd, head of English language at Trinity College London. “If someone is really highly motivated, they can learn really quickly. It's common for children under the age of 11 to be fluent in about six months.”

    12The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________.

    Aintroduction   Bdiscussion

    Cexplanation   Dconclusion

13What does Mila Vulchanova mainly stress?

AThe importance of key teaching ways.

BThe necessity of working hard at English.

    CThe advantages of learning English.

DThe importance of starting learning English at an early age.

14The UK government hopes that benefit claimants ________.

    Areach “ESOL Entry 1”

    Bare advanced English learners

Cstudy English for about 360 hours

Dget citizenship from the government first

15What Dr Elaine Boyd said suggested that ________.
