Unlike the owls in the Harry Potter books, homing pigeons can’t be given an address to fly to. But if they are taken away from home, even as far as 1100 miles away, homing pigeons can always find their way back.
This ability has made homing pigeons good messengers for thousands of years. Homing pigeons were widely used in both World War I and World War II. Several birds even received medals for delivering important messages during wartime.
But how do homing pigeons find their way home overlong distances? Scientists believe that homing pigeons have both a compass mechanism and a map mechanism in their bodies.
A homing pigeon’s compass mechanism relies upon the Sun. Like many other birds, homing pigeons can use the position and angle of the Sun to determine the proper direction for flight.
Homing pigeons’ map mechanism relied on low-frequency infrasound. Humans cannot hear these sounds. But these sounds are created by nearly everything. Homing pigeons listen to these sounds until they recognize the sounds of their home.
7.Homing pigeons can fly back if they were taken away from home ________ miles away.
    A.2000 B.1800 C.1500 D.1000

9.________ leads a homing pigeon’s compass mechanism to work well.
    A.The Sun B.The Star C.The Mars D.The Earth
10.According to the map mechanism, homing pigeons can find way back because ________.
A.they hear their owner calls them
B.they recognize the low-frequency infrasound from their home
C.they ask other homing pigeons for help
D.they know the direction of the Sun
11.What is NOT mentioned according to the passage?
A.Homing pigeons can find way back without giving address.
B.Homing pigeons are widely used to send messages nowadays.
C.Homing pigeons have two mechanisms in their bodies to help them fly back.
D.Homing pigeons can get a special sound that humans cannot.
12.What’s the best title for this passage?

Your body is more than what you see when you look in the mirror—________ .
BrainThe brain allows us to experience the outside world. We remember, have feelings, solve problems, and control our bodies in our brain. Nerves (神经) from our senses send signals to the brain to let the brain know what is going on in the outside world. SkinWe all have skin. It covers our whole body and lets the good things in and the bad things out. It’s our first line of protection against the outside environment. Just like our eyes, nose, and ears, it houses one of our five senses. It also absorbs sunlight for vitamin D and heat.
Muscles(肌肉)Muscles are how we move and live. All movement in the body is controlled by muscles. Skeletal muscles help us to move around. Smooth muscles control organs within our body. Cardiac muscle is special. It can pump our heart and blood.

Who you are makes a difference
A teacher decided to honour her students by telling them the difference they have made. She presented each of them with a blue ribbon with letters that read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference."
Afterwards, the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of influence recognition(赞赏)would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to spread them and follow up on the results, and report back to the class in a week.
One boy in the class went to a manager in a company, and honoured him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and said, “Would you please find somebody to honour, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra so they can find a third person.”
Later that day, the manager went to see his boss and gave him the gift of the blue ribbon. He told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. His surprised boss accepted it delightedly. The manager placed the blue ribbon right in his boss's jacket above his heart and gave him the last extra ribbon to pass on.
That night, the boss went home to his 14-year-old son and told him about his day. “One of the managers gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honour and I thought about you.I want to honour you, "said the boss."My days are really hectic and when I come home, I don't pay a lot of attention to you.Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just want you to know that you do make a difference to me. You're a great kid, and I love you!"
The astonished boy couldn't stop crying. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, I was planning to run away from home tomorrow, Dad, because I didn't think you loved me.Now I will never do that.”

The only thing better than reading a good book is reading it with others. In a book club, a group of people choose a book that everyone will read individually and then discuss together. There are no rules to starting a book club, and the plan might well change, depending on the groups. It's good to think ahead about how you'd like the book club to run.
Think of 8 to 12 others (people around your age) who you'd like to be part of your book club. Perhaps encourage your friends to invite people whom they know well but you haven't met. A book club can help you make friends. Having a topic can make the club feel more focused.
Finally make sure you read the book before the meeting, and come prepared with questions to ask and things to talk about.
Want to dive into stories with friends and share your thoughts?●________
A schedule is a good way to make sure everyone gets a chance to choose the book. Alternatively, you could provide a selection of books and ask everyone to vote for what they want to read next.
    ●What do we talk about?
Some questions are especially good for sparking discussion about a book. Try these: if you could give the book a different ending, what would it be? What do you think the main character looked like? What do you think will happen next?
    ●Where do we meet now?
To help ensure social distancing, It's best to meet up online. With an adult's help, you can set up a video call between book club members. You can then take part from your cosy reading corner and enjoy yourself.
·Get advice by visiting clubs-kids.shcolastic.co.uk.·Try contacting your favourite author on social media to see if they will answer your group's questions about a book.
·The Week Junior's Book Club has tips on what you could read.
