Ever imagined what it might be like to go to school in another country? Join us as we spend a school day on the Sunny Island!
Welcome to Blue Sky School on the Sunny Island! This cool school is situated in the north side of the island. It opened in 1962, and teaches 192 students between the ages of 6 and 16.
What does the school look like?
Blue Sky School might look a little different from your school at home! The buildings are brightly colored and decorated with paintings on the walls that display the typical trees and fruits on the island, like bananas!
Healthy eating is an important topic at Blue Sky School. Many children that go to school here are from poor backgrounds. Many of the students’ parents work long hours in local hotels. They don’t have much time to make breakfast for their children before school. To help out, nearby hotel Bay Gardens Resort runs a breakfast club at school and students are able to get a tasty breakfast to start the day, free of charge. So school is a place for them to learn and eat a healthy meal.
The school kids say that getting to eating breakfast with their friends before class is one of the reasons they love coming to school!
What’s a school day like?
The school day begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m.

After school club! Students can take part in different clubs, such as the
community choir, where they learn songs to perform for tourists, as a thank-you for the breakfast club.
4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Homework club! To make sure everyone gets home safely, school finishes at 5:00 p.m., so there’s still time for kids to make their way
home during daylight hours.

Posted on 15 November, 2021 by Ken, Yunnan I had a hair-raising moment while I was trail (小径) walking last month. I was overconfident, walking carelessly and not paying attention to the slippery path.(It had rain heavily the day before.) Suddenly I slipped and lost my balance.
Below, there was a ravine—it was a long way downhill. I grabbed a tree branch fast and held on for dear life. Luckily, the instructor (教练) helped me swing myself back onto the trail. I was so relieved that I gave him a huge hug.
That happened while I was taking part in a five-day course in a mountain near our city. It was one of several projects that Outward Bound School runs for young people. Each day I did something new and exciting like climbing ropes. I was nervous at first because I had not climbed so high before, but the instructor encouraged me to try my best. As I climbed, I got less nervous and more determined. It was an unforgettable moment when I finally reached the top.
At night, we went camping on the wood. It was thrilling to be living on our own. The campsite, near a narrow stream had no electricity or tap water. We learnt about pitching tents and building campfires.
On the last day, my parents came to pick me up. I talked nonstop while I was giving them a tour of the school. My dad smiled warmly at me and said, “We are proud of you, Ken!”
Now I want to challenge myself again. My dream is to have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to spend a week at sea. I’m sure it will be an incredible journey. Unfortunately, I will have to wait till I’m eighteen.

I am Mari. I live in Flint, Michigan. About five years ago, our water began to smell funny. My family started getting really bad skin problems. My little sister needed special medicine. She wasn’t the only kid in Flint who got so sick. Some people suffered from bad headaches. Others had stomachache.
Across the city, people complained that something was seriously wrong with their tap water. Our water was polluted. We couldn’t drink or cook with the water from our tap. We had to use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing our teeth. The only safe way to take baths was to heat up water from bottles.
In 2015, when I was 8 years old, I decided to speak up for the people of Flint. I wrote a letter to then-president Barack Obama to ask him for help. In response, he came to speak with our community. I got to meet him. But I wanted to do more.
My friends and family helped me start a campaign for Flint. Our goal was to raise S15,000. So far, we’ve collected $280,000!
For the past few years, I’ve been giving out bottles of water and new water filters (过滤器) to people in my city. Many people in Flint still can’t use their tap water.
I’ve also used social media to ask people around the world for help. I have more than 100,000 followers on the Internet, including famous people and regular people from different countries.
Most people now know me as Little Miss Flint. I’m proud that I am able to help my neighbors get clean water. I’ll continue until every single Flint citizen feels safe drinking the water from their taps. I also want people to realize that Flint isn’t the only place with water issues. It’s important for us all to ask questions about what’s in the water at school and at home.
My goal is to run for U.S. president in 2044 — as soon as I’m old enough. But you don’t have to be an adult to change the world. It starts with helping out in your own community. You have a voice and the ability to make that voice heard. Don’t let anyone stop you.

Sometimes it may seem that what you are learning at school will be useless in the future. It may seem that you are wasting your life away or only learning to get into the right university. But you will be surprised to find how much of what you learnt at school is helpful to you one day.
Three people were asked what they found most useful at school, and their thoughts are shared below.
I hated typing at school about 20 years ago. Only secretaries typed in those days; no one had computers at home or at work. What’s more, I was no good at all. I was as bad at typing as I was at tennis I made so many mistakes. But today I’m the fastest typist at the keyboard. I get the job done faster and more easily than my colleagues in the office. That one year of typing class has made my whole life easier.
We had a class called Guidance to learn about making good decision in life. I found it pretty boring and didn’t pay much attention. One day the teacher made us guess which appliance we should buy first once we had our own homes. The answer was a fridge.
Without a fridge, you cannot keep your food fresh and will waste a great deal of money with food going off. I learnt that it was true once I had my own place. The first day I bought some chicken meat. By dinner time it smelled and I couldn’t even eat it! My housemate and I started saving to buy a fridge immediately even though we were university students without much money.
When I used to ask my teacher how to spell something, she often said, I don’t know. Then she would take out the dictionary and took it up. She always dared to admit that she did not know the answer. I learnt two things. You don’t have to know everything: and if you don’t know how to spell something, just get the dictionary out. Both are very useful lessons!
91.Sometimes at school, it seems that you are only learning for one purpose. What is it?

THE BEST WAY to deal with an emergency is to avoid one, if you can. Part Four of our ongoing series on crime prevention focuses on protecting your home against burglary. Sticky Fingers, an experienced burglar now serving a 6-year prison sentence, agreed to talk to our reporter.
Reporter: Sticky, what do you look for before burglarizing a house?
Fingers: Well, first, I make sure no one is home and no one is watching. I nose around neighbourhoods where people don’t seem to know each other very well. That way, I won’t be noticed. Next, I try to find a house where the people are on holiday and not likely to return soon. I do this by looking for houses with no lights on in the evening. Then I look at doorways. They’re a sure giveaway(暴露). When newspapers, mail, and deliveries are piled up, I can tell that people have been away from days. I can even count how many days from the number of newspapers.
Reporter: 4 ?
Fingers: Well, usually it’s easy and effortless. Lots of times people leave a window open, or doors and windows unlocked. Then I just slip in, when I have to break in, I look for a patio(露台) door on the first floor. They usually have weak locks and you can force them easily. I watch out for dogs, though. If I hear a dog barking, I go somewhere else.
79.The series is mainly about how to prevent crime, isn’t it?

“I’ve seen a huge difference in Irina since she started talking to a life coach,” says her mother Sylvana. “I get on very well with Irina, but she can’t always talk to me about everything. Talking to someone who listens but is not a close family member is very important.”
What is a life coach?
An athlete improves because he trains with a coach. A life coach can also guide you to success. A life coach encourages you to think not only about what you want, but also about how you are going to get it. Until now, life coaches have helped adults, for example business executives who need to make decisions or parents who want some advice on bringing up their children. Now it’s the turn of our young people.
Life Coach Simone Waltz
Simon Waltz, a former radio producer, set up her life coaching company five years ago. “I offer teenagers a place to talk, to decide on their future plans and to sort out problems, ” says Waltz. Jem’s parents are delighted with what Waltz has done. Jem has got a place at university to study medicine but he has decided to take part in a volunteer project in central Africa first. “Yes, we were surprised, but Jem is still very young. This experience abroad will help him grow up before he goes to university here.”
Life coach Tara Newhouse
Tara tells the story of a 15-year-old who was failing in science, until they found out she learnt best through music. Once she made up songs to learn by, she achieved 99 percent in her tests. Tara has also helped Sylvana’s daughter, Irina, who was not sure whether she would go to university. Now she hopes to get into a top university. Irina now feels more confident about everything. She has even taken up exercise for the first time in years.
Life coach Mo Ahmed
Mo Ahmed has coached children as young as five years old, “It could be something as simple as leaning multiplication tables—asking them how they’re going to do it, how are they going to make it fun?” Mo has also helped teenager Regina who was having problems making friends when she moved to a new school. They talked together about the things Regina really enjoyed doing. By joining the school basketball team Regina has made several new friends.

Six weeks before his 97th birthday, Giuseppe Paterno realized the dream of a lifetime: he got a university degree (学位)in history.
Mr. Paterno's graduation has attracted a lot of reporters around the world, partly because of his age. But he has drawn their attention mainly because his life story shows his spirit(精神)commitment(承诺;投入). His story sets an example for millions of schoolchildren and young people in Italy and elsewhere especially during the time of the coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情) " Don't get lost because you meet with difficulties. There will always be difficulties, "' Mr. Paterno told reporters, "You have to be strong. " "Studying has been my interest since I was a little child” he said, "but unluckily, life was hard to me."
Born in Palermo, Italy in 1923, the first of seven children in a "very poor family", Mr. Paterno began working soon after finishing primary school. After he retired, in the mid-1980s, he returned to his books. At that time, he met a professor from the University of Palermo, who asked him to go after his dream. He never gave up from then on and finished learning at that university.
" His story is proof that dreams can come true and that you can always keep young― if not in age but at least in spirit if you develop interests. He's a model to follow.” said Rossella Cancila, his adviser and a professor of history.
Italy's university system is based on a three-year degree, followed by a two-year master's course (硕士课程). University officials are hoping that Mr. Paterno will continue his study.
He isn't so sure. "I have to admit that at this moment, I don't know if I would deal with it just like before, " he said, "All the attention has been a bit tiring. But anyway, I want to keep my choice open. "

Do you or your family know an elderly person who may feel lonely? Perhaps you have a grandparent who doesn’t live nearby and who might not see many people. It’s thought that there could be more than a million lonely older people in the UK who often feel sad. This might because they live alone, or they might be in a care home and haven’t got family or friends who visit.
Simply writing a letter can help to cheer them up. It’s an easy thing to do but can make a big impact(影响). Being able to write an interesting letter is also a good skill because a lot of modern communication is written and sent by digital(电子的)messaging and email. Perhaps you have a grandparent.
Everyday things that you do, such as what you learned at school, sporting achievements or places you visit, might seem ordinary to you but an older person would be happy to read about them in a letter. It could make them think back to when they were young and did similar things. The person may also want to write back to you.
Professor Smith, aged 67, set up a group called Silver Robin, which has helped children from six schools in Oxford to begin writing letters to older people. “It’s a lovely thing to do and connects different generations. Loneliness is not a nice thing and if a young person’s letter puts a smile on someone’s face, then that’s wonderful.
Where do I start? Ask your parents if there's an elderly relative or family friend you can write to and they can help you get started. Your teacher may like to make contact with a local elderly care home so that your class can begin writing letters.
How else can I help? There are other ways to help elderly people less lonely. For example, knowing the date of their birthday means you can send a card, saying hello and being nice to people in your street, checking on them with your family or knocking on their door sometimes just to see how they are can make a difference.

Once there was a rich man named Richard. He was greedy. One day he was walking in his garden. He saw a strange bird in a bush. It was very small. But it had very beautiful and colorful features. Its voice was also very sweet. Richard had never seen such a bird in his life. He slowly went near the bush and caught the bird.
“Why have you caught me?” the bird asked.
“I want to make money. I can sell you for a big amount,” replied Richard.
“But you are already rich. Why do you want more?”asked the bird.
“You can not sell me. Nobody will buy me, because I lose my beautiful features and my sweet voice when I was caught.” Then it slowly turned into a black bird and look like a crow.
Richard said surprisingly, “Then I will kill you, and I will eat your meat.”
“Eat me! I am so small. You will not get any meat out of me,” replied the bird.
Richard could not answer.
The bird then suggested, “Set me free. In return I shall teach you three simple but useful rules, these rules can profit you greatly.”
“Profit me! Really? ”said Richard. “But how can I trust you? You may fly away.”
“I give you my word. And I always keep my word.” said the bird.
Richard wanted to take a chance. He released the bird. It flew up at once. Then it sat on the branch of a tree. Its color started changing. It became beautiful again.
Richard asked,"Now teach me the rules.”
“Certainly.” said the bird. Then it added, “The first rule is ‘Never believe everything others say.’ The second rule is ‘Never be sad about something you do not have,’ The third rule is ‘(5)______.’ ”
“You silly bird.” shouted Richard. These three rules are known to everyone. You cheated me.
But the bird said, “Richard, just think about all your actions of today. You had me in your hands, but you threw me away. You believed all that I said. And you are sad about not having me. The rules are simple, but you never followed them. Now do you see the value of the rules?”

An Afro-American boy was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in poverty. He could not see any hope for the future.
When the boy turned 13, his father showed him an old shirt and asked, “How much does it cost?”
“Probably $1,” he replied.
“Can you sell it at $2?” the father looked at him.
“Only a fool will buy it!” the boy shouted.
“Why don’t you have a try?” his father said.
The boy nodded and said, “I will try, but I can’t promise anything.” He carefully washed the old shirt and smoothed out the creases (皱眉)in it. The next day, he came to a crowded subway station. After about six hours, he sold it to a passer-by. With the two dollars he ran all the way home excitedly.
After ten days, the father asked his son, “Can you sell an old shirt at $20?”
“No way! An old shirt is only worth $2,” the boy argued.
“Why not try it again?” said his father.
The boy decided to ask his cousin to draw a cute Mickey Mouse on the old shirt. This time he chose to sell it at the gate of a private school. Soon, it was sold to a little girl. She loved the design so much that she tipped him $5.
When the boy got home, his father handed him another old shirt and asked him to sell it at $200. Surprisingly, the boy took the shirt at once.

Dear Mr. Henshaw,
I finished Beggar Bears in two nights. It is a really good book. At first, I was surprised because it wasn’t funny like your other books, but then I got to thinking (you said readers should think) and decided a book doesn’t have to be funny to be good, although it often helps. This book did not need to be funny.
In the first Chapter I thought it was going to be funny. I guess I expected it because of your other books and the mother bear was teaching her cubs to beg from tourists in Yellowstone Park. Then when the mother died because a stupid tourist fed her a cupcake in a plastic bag and she ate the bag, too, I knew this was going to be a sad book. Winter was coming on, tourists were leaving the park and the little bears didn’t know how to look for food for themselves. When they hibernated (冬眠) and then woke up in the middle of winter because they had eaten all the wrong things and hadn’t stored up enough fat, I almost cried. I sure was relieved when the nice ranger (护林员) and his boy found the young bears and fed them and the next summer taught them to hunt for the right things to eat.
I wonder what happens to the fathers of bears. Do they just go away?
Sometimes I lie awake listening to the gas station “pingping”, and I am upset because I am afraid something might happen to Mom. She is so little compared to most moms, and she works so hard. I don’t think Dad is much interested in me. He didn’t phone when he said he would.
I hope that ________.
Sincerely,
Leigh Botts

①The debate on “textbooks vs. computers” has been going on for years. How much technology is enough in the classroom? Should textbooks be replaced by computers?
②There is no doubt that computers are powerful tools. Computer-based lesson plans are updated in real time. New information can be added as soon as changes take place. Students can find the latest information for the subjects they are studying.
③With computers, students can learn how to use them for the rest of their lives. Today, computers are used in almost all areas. Students can prepare themselves better for the future if they have computers.
④However, despite these advantages, I think textbooks must stay.
⑤Textbooks are professionally edited. All the facts have been checked. They are put together in the best way. Each chapter builds on what a student has previously learned. On the internet, however, not all the information is true to organized.
⑥With textbooks, it is easier for students to take notes. Scientists have found that taking notes by hand helps students learn more.
⑦Textbooks are also less expensive than computers. While most families can afford textbooks, not all of them can afford a computer. Every student should be allowed to learn what he needs to learn. It's wrong to rob a student of his right to learn just because he can't afford the material.
⑧Computers are playing an important role in education. They allow students to learn more. However, I don’t think they can replace textbooks. If students want to learn well, they must use textbooks. Do you agree with me?

A little stream ran down from a high mountain far, far away through many villages and forests, until it reached a desert. The stream then thought, “I’ve been through countless difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert!” But as she started her journey, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed and was very unhappy. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean in the end,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice came, “if a breeze(微风)can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream replied, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.” “That’s because you can’t give up what you are. If you like to do it, and let yourself evaporate(蒸发)into the breeze, it can take you across, and you can reach the ocean,” said the desert.
“Give up what I am now and disappear into the breeze? No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea.
After all, she had never experienced anything like it before.
“The breeze can carry the vapor(水蒸气)across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again to continue its course,” explained the desert very patiently.
“ And whether you are a river or vapor, your nature never changes,” continued the desert. Hearing this, the little stream rushed into the open arms of the breeze, which carried her to the next stage of her life.
The course of our lives is like the experience of the little stream.

Forever Friends of FRIENDS
Twenty-five years have passed since the American TV series, Friends was shown for the first time. However, it is still making friends. Many Chinese teenagers love it. Through watching the show, they can not only learn about American culture but also improve their conversational (口语的)English.
Perhaps you haven’t seen the series. It's a story of six young people. They came to New York City to find love, success, adventure and fun. Each of the characters had a different personality. However, they were able to overlook (忽略)their differences and became good friends. There was no social media at that time, but they always “liked” and supported one another. “I’ll be there for you.” says the opening song, “because you’re there for me. too.”
Many fans thought that the show taught them many things which could not be learned from school and parents. These things include being sincere and honest with people around you. One fan said, ''There are many lessons we can’t learn from books. I learned so much conversational English through watching the show.” For example, Joey sometimes greets people by saying, “Hey, guys! How yadoin?" That’s a phrase that you won’t find in your textbook.
New phrases and strange pronunciation are two things that make learning English difficult. So, watching TV series such as Friends is really helpful. You can write down the words and phrases you don’t understand. Translate them and then imitate (模仿)the pronunciation. And, to make it more fun, think about the life lessons you can learn from the show. Practice being “Friends” with your own friends.
