When I was 9,we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow,London on a gray January morning.Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me.Without my beloved beaches and endless blue—sky days,I felt at a loss and out of place.Until I made a discovery.
Southbank,at an eastern bend in the Thames,is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing.I loved it.I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favourite:Safe.Safe meant cool.It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it.Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam(横杆),I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up:Safe,man.Safe.A few minutes later, when I landed the trick,my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:“Safe!Safe!Safe!” And that’s what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15,my family moved to Washington.I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming.Within a couple of years,I’d given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004,I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there.I’ve travelled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear:tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters.Weaving(穿梭)among the kids who rushed by on their boards,I found my way to the beam. Then a rail—thin teenager,in a baggy white T-shirt,skidded(滑)up to the beam.He sat next to me.He seemed not to notice the man next to him.But soon I caught a few of his glances.“I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly,he began to nod his head.“Safe,man.Safe.”
    “Yeah,” I said.“Safe.”
24.What can we learn about the author soon after he moved to London?
    A.He felt disappointed.
    B.He gave up his hobby.
    C.He liked the weather there.
D.He had disagreements with his family.
    答案A
25.What do the underlined words “Safe!Safe!Safe!” probably mean?
    A.Be careful! B.Well done!
    C.No way! D.Don’t worry!
根据画线词后文“And that’s what mattered—landing tricks,being a good skater.(那才是真正重要的——掌握了滑板的落地技巧才是一名好的滑板玩家。)”
26.Why did the author like to spend time in Southbank when he returned to London?
    A.To join the skateboarding.
    B.To make new friends.
    C.To learn more tricks.
    D.To relive his childhood days.
根据第四段最后的对话“‘I was a local here 20 years ago,’I told him. Then, slowly,he began to nod his head.‘Safe,man.Safe.’(我告诉他:‘我20年前经常在这里玩滑板。’然后,他缓慢地开始向我点头:‘嗨,你好!’)”可推知,作者去Southbank这个地方是为了寻找自己玩滑板的回忆,故选D项。
27.What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Children should learn a second language.
B.Sport is necessary for children’s health.
C.Children need a sense of belonging.
D.Seeing the world is a must for children.

The great thing about libraries is that they house all types of books—from mysteries to biography and dramas—all in one location. The bad thing about libraries is that they house all types of books in one location, and if it’s a location you cannot get to,you are out of luck. Now,mobile library solutions are appearing quickly around the country to bring books to people who need them.
A few years ago, when the Little Free Libraries Movement kicked off, more people of all ages could have access to books. Now,more than 15,000 free book stands can be found across the globe, bringing books to unexpected places. But many folks are simply not in a position to get to the places where the books are.Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be expensive to fund and to operate.
Books on Bikes programs are popping up in areas where there is a strong bike culture,in some regions like Seattle,or a strong need to bring books to the masses, for example,in San Francisco.
The Seattle Public Library’s Books on Bikes program consists of three bike/trailer combos(组合)that librarians bring to community events. The trailers are even Wi-Fi enabled so that visitors can sign up for a library card and browse(浏览) the library’s card catalogue on the spot.
“Seattle has a really strong bike culture so we want to tap into that and provide full-service library programs but do it in a way that is quick and smart,” librarian Jared Mills said in an interview.
San Francisco’s program, called Bibliobicicleta, was launched in 2013 by librarian Alicia Tapia. Her trailer can hold about 100 books and attracts readers of all ages and income levels. It’s an independent,donation-based library—like a Little Free Library, but on wheels.
When asked why she would start a free library on a bike,Tapia answers,“Why not?Bikes are cool, and can go anywhere.”
28.What is the passage mainly about?
    A.Free libraries on bikes.
    B.Unique bicycle cultures.
    C.Popular online libraries.
    D.Various library movements.
    答案A
根据第一段的“Now,mobile library solutions are appearing quickly around the country to bring books to people who need them.”和第三段的“Books on Bikes programs are popping up in areas where there is a strong bike culture,in some regions like Seattle,or a strong need to bring books to the masses, for example,in San Francisco.”
29.What are the advantages of Books on Bikes programs?
    A.Good but expensive.
    B.Good but hard to operate.
    C.Flexible and low cost.
    D.Expensive and hard to operate.
根据第二段最后一句“Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be expensive to fund and to operate.”
30.What do the underlined words in Paragraph 5 are closest in meaning to?
    A.Come up with.
    B.Stay in touch with.
    C.Keep pace with.
    D.Make use of.
根据上文“Seattle has a really strong bike culture”,结合下文“provide full service library programs but do it in a way that is quick and smart”以及“so”和“that”(指代上文提到的西雅图强大的自行车文化)可推断,此处说的是:西雅图有强大的自行车文化,所以我们想要利用这个文化,以一种快速和聪明的方式提供全面服务的图书馆项目。
31.What did Tapia think of the program?
    A.Environment-friendly. B.Practical.
    C.Controversial. D.Profitable.
根据最后一段“When asked why she would start a free library on a bike,Tapia answers,‘Why not?Bikes are cool,and can go anywhere.’(当被问到为什么她会推出自行车上的免费图书馆时,塔皮娅回答说:‘为什么不呢?自行车很酷,可以去任何地方。’)”可推断出,Tapia认为自行车图书馆非常方便实用。故选B项。

    D
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”.I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying,“Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents,I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter,or something that required a little more work such as taping padding(衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you”.When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday,I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realised that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him.I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right,or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection,I know that I’m doing the right thing.I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
32.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?
A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
33.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to .
A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor
B.meet her father who was already an old man
C.join in the holiday celebration of the company
D.finish her work before the deadline approached
34.How does the author buy herself peace of mind?
    A.By keeping herself busy.
B.By always doing the urgent thing.
C.By accompanying her parents every day and night.
D.By doing everything possible to avoid something unpleasant.
根据最后一段第一句中“but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality”可知,为了获得内心的平静,少留下遗憾,作者尽可能做到未雨绸缪,故选D项。
35.What is the best title for the passage?
    A.To Keep Emotional Well-being
    B.To Prevent “If Only” Moments
C.To Follow the Most Useful Rule
D.To Achieve the Peace of Mind
Many people truly want to help a friend who is in pain. But words often fail us at times like these, leaving us stammering(结巴) for the right thing to say. Some people are so afraid to say or do the wrong thing that they choose to do nothing at all. 36 There’s no one perfect way to respond or to support someone you care about, but there are some good ground rules.
37 You are not supposed to be a central figure when your friend feels sad.You may say you would have done things differently if this unlucky thing had happened to you.Of course,I hope you don’t get the chance to find out.The unhappiness belongs to your friend. So follow their lead.
Keep in mind that being with someone who is in pain isn’t easy.Your friend cannot show up for their part of the relationship very well, and you will likely get hurt.Don’t take it personally. 38 In fact, one of the best things you can do for a friend in sorrow is to forecast their needs.Don’t say,“Call me if there’s anything I can do,” because your friend will not call. What you should do is to make concrete offers:“I will stop by each morning on my way to work and take your dog for a quick walk.” Then show up and do it.
39 Hug your friend, rub their back, and touch their arm.Comfort them with small physical gestures that let them know you care and calm them.
Give them hope.Give your friend hope that things will eventually get better. 40

    A.Show your love.
    B.Keep your friend at ease.
    C.Instead,please be tolerant of them.
D.Remember to play a supporting role.
E.After all,the future will be full of hope.
F.Their heart will heal and life will go on.
G.That’s certainly an option, but it’s not often a good one.
36.G 上文讲在面对需要安慰的朋友时,一些人因担心说错话或做的不合适而选择什么都不做,下文“There’s no one perfect way to respond or to support someone you care about, but there are some good ground rules.” G项“That’s certainly an option, but it’s not often a good one.(这当然是一个选择,但通常不是一个好选择。)”中的That指代上文“choose to do nothing at all ”,“but it’s not often a good one”引出下文,在该段中起承上启下的作用。
由下文“You are not supposed to be a central figure when your friend feels sad.”以及段尾句“So follow their lead.” D项“Remember to play a supporting role.(记住扮演配角。)”
38.C 上文“Keep in mind that being with someone who is in pain isn’t easy.Your friend cannot show up for their part of the relationship very well, and you will likely get hurt.Don’t take it personally.”
语意相关,其中“Show”指的就是文中“Hug your friend,rub their back,and touch their arm.”行为。故选A项。
40.F 上文“Give your friend hope that things will eventually get better.”主要是说给朋友希望,让朋友明白一切最终都会好起来,F项“Their heart will heal and life will go on.(他们的心会自愈,生活也会继续。)”

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog.He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him.Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realised that lightning had set the woods on fire.Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much.It had more wind and lightning than rain.Zach pulled Steve’s arm.“Let’s go!We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve pulled Brady’s leash and their heads down against the strong fire-wind,they hurried down the path they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp sound.Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river...
Brady barked a sharp warning.Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do,and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.
Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind.Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.
They had no choice but to leave him behind.Heartsick,Steve and Zach went up a slope. He couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.
    “Where’ve you been?” Steve cried.

Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees.

“Where’ve you been?” Steve cried.Brady stopped directly in front of him and started pushing him back toward the slope they’d just climbed. When Steve still didn’t get it,Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and pulled harder. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated.Of course he remembered what his uncle had said about Brady saving his life, but that had been a long time ago.Was he still sharp enough to get them through this?Brady pulled again, urgently.“OK,big guy,” Steve decided.
Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees.Several times the big dog stopped to get his escape route.Often he changed direction.Steve had no idea how long they’d walked. He just held onto Brady’s leash with one hand and kept putting one foot in front of the other. He was almost numb when he heard the wonderful sound of rushing water. The river! With a yell the boys ran unsteadily forward until they jumped in the cool, running water.“Brady, you did it!”
