When my mother died a few years ago,we looked through boxes in which she had lovingly stored her children's lives. Handwritten report cards from grade schoo1. News cuttings about games. Postcards from summer camps. And so many photos:birthdays, graduations, weddings and trips to wonderful places.
After my father's death,I found many handwritten pity letters from his friends. Rereading them once a year,I am transported back to the time I miss so much. Of course,I received many emails about Dad as well, but I wouldn't begin to know how or where to find them. Besides, personal messages are more meaningful when presented in the hand of the sender.
My kids, now in their 20s,have mostly digital keepsakes. Increasingly they rely on Facebook to store memories. Their letters from college, sent by email, are long gone. Many photos, never printed, have disappeared. I really worry that for them.
In Andrew Hoskins'new book Digital Memory Studies,he concludes,“Despite the gradual disappearance of photographs, letters and other objects that are reminders of people and past experiences, their keeping is like holding on to those people and experiences. ”Digital items offer nothing of the kind.
Mark B. McKinley explained that collecting physical memorabilia(值得纪念的事物)can serve as a means of control to bring out a comfort zone in one’s life, calming fears and easing worries. It’s no wonder that children are fond of collecting things—it's important to their development.
One mother says,“My Son collects pieces of broken stones. ”The kid might become a great geologist or a successful businessman. But will his mom print out a photo of that unique collection? Will his degree in geology be memorialized on paper,or will he be given a digital diploma? And will he collect his first paycheck or will he be paid by direct deposit?
24. What can be concluded from the first three paragraphs?
A. People don’t collect physical objects.
B. Hard copies fail to preserve our memory.
C. Physical objects aren’t collected for memory.
D. Memories are stored on the Internet forever.
25. What is Andrew Hoskins'attitude towards digital memory?
A. He is against it. B. He is hopeful about it.
C. He is confused about it. D. He doesn’t care about it.
26. What benefit does collecting physical memorabilia bring to children?
A. It cures their illnesses. B. It makes them feel relaxed.
C. It keeps their life under contro1. D. It helps them lead a comfortable life.
27. Why does the author raise some questions in the last paragraph?
A. To explain a unique collection.
B. To offer direct support to the boy.
C. To encourage readers to share their ideas.
D. To show her worry about the loss of collecting.
C
Teenagers who travel around the world alone have been making headlines quite often. A young person alone in a dangerous situation attracts attention and sponsors. Young sailors also attract various views. For example, Jessica Watson was asked by the government to cancel her voyage; yet the Prime Minister called her “a hero for young Australians” when she returned. It seemed there is confusion about the competence and independence of young people.
The popular psychologists tell us that teenage brains are likely to make wrong judgments. But such ideas often do not apply to specific individuals. Between the ages of 14 and 18, teenagers vary greatly in their abilities. The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their age but by discussion with the related, responsible adults. Some teens are certainly inexperienced and capable of childish mistakes, but the ones who attempt dangerous journeys normally do so by winning the confidence of hard-headed and well-qualified adult supporters.
But it is also wrong to think that any 16-year old can desire to get achievements as unusual as Jessica Watson's. Watson calls herself “an ordinary girl who had a dream”. Her intention is to encourage teenagers but this idea can have the opposite effect of making them feel not good enough because great achievements are beyond them. Should all teens have such dreams? Actually, individuals face varying circumstances that restrict their dreams.
Teenagers who travel around the world alone should not be judged by preconceived(事先形成的)views about young people. Nor should young “ordinary” teenagers feel pressure to long for extraordinary personal goals. In fact, I believe the example of solo sailing overstresses individualism. The teenage years are when most of us “ordinary” people learn that we can achieve great things in cooperation with others.
28. Why is Jessica Watson mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To praise Jessica's great achievement.
B. To point out the media's interest in young people.
C. To introduce a divided idea about young people's adventures.
D. To show the Prime Minister's attitude against the government.
29. What can be inferred about teenagers from the text?
A. They need supports of responsible adults.
B. Their abilities vary with the level of independence.
C. They tend to make wrong decisions between 14 and 18.
D. Their attempts in dangerous journeys prove their lacking experience.
30. What does Jessica mean by calling herself “an ordinary girl who had a dream”?
A. Dreams need encouragement.
B. Teenagers should have wild dreams.
C. Everyone would accomplish what Jessica has done.
D. Ordinary teens could also make great achievements.
31. What's the author's attitude towards teenagers travelling alone?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Sympathetic.
D
Pangolins (穿山甲) are the most trafficked (非法交易) mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly (有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation. Partnering with the non-profit organization Pangolin Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal's habitats.
Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, “One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant.”
Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.
Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.
Filmed on location in South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic, and Gabon, this powerful documentary is the story of two men on a mission to get all four species of African pangolin on camera for the very first time.
32.What is the purpose of the documentary?
A.To study the situation of pangolins.
B.To collect fund to protect pangolins.
C.To raise awareness of pangolin protection.
D.To propose setting up pangolin reserves.
33.What is the meaning of the underlined word “fussy” in paragraph 2?
A.Picky B. Messy C. Showy D.Heavy
34. What's the documentary mainly about?
A.The illegal trade of pangolins.
B.The medical function of pangolin's scales.
C.The life of pangolins in their natural habitats.
D.The efforts of Pangolin Africa to save pangolins.
35. Where is the text most likely from?
A.A brochure B.A diary. C.A novel D.A magazine.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You might have noticed how everyone is obsessed with(痴迷于)their screen during family gatherings or bonding with friends. Disconnecting from devices might be challenging, but there are ways to spend time with your friends without using them. With the right activities you can connect more with them and have fun.
If you want to spend quality time with each other, you and your friends need to sacrifice your screen time. 36 It could also be one of the house rules when you are together. However, everyone in the group must be willing to cooperate or else the purpose might be defeated.
By turning off your devices it would focus the atmosphere more on your bonding. Everyone could feel more welcomed and invited. 37
So what are the alternatives other than staring at the screen? Before the trend of high-tech devices9 a board game had always been the source of entertainment when a group of friends wanted to have some fun. 38 Though they have digital versions9 you might not want to miss the opportunity to actually interact (互动)with your friends face to face.
Another helpful way to start a conversation with your friends is through playing question games. 39 But don't worry. There are many different versions of question games you can search online, such as Never Have I Ever questions.
40 While it is important to enjoy your get-together, going into a purposeful conversation is also necessary. You don't know what your friends are going through, and making room for a heart-to-heart talk might be what they need.
A. It is better for you all to agree on this matter.
B. So why not bring these classic activities back?
C. You and your friends could attend more to each other.
D. Being interactive is the key in bonding with your friends.
E. Turning off your devices could be the first step you can do.
F. Entertainment isn't the only way to interact with your friends.
G. The main idea of this kind of game is to take turns in involvement.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 1989,fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience a for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early(at 7 am,compared to 9 am at the bank),and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a truck, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through(穿梭) the traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

小作文
Dear John,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from TikTok addiction. Actually, it is commonly seen that more and more teenagers get crazy about TikTok and spend a lot of time watching and sharing videos online, which makes them unable to focus on study. Therefore, immediate measures should be taken to stop it. You should start some other hobbies, such as reading, listening to music or playing chess. Besides, you had better make more friends through face to face communication.
I sincerely hope that these ideas can help you with the problem.(94words)
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
One possible version:
Paragraph 1 :
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the truck. He hit the road face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road as the truck sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die in a matter of minutes, I stopped my car and carefully examined the boy. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family was contacted and he was wheeled into the operating room,I drove home, exhausted but happy.
Paragraph 2 :
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy,all his family got up,with grateful smiles on their faces. What a feeling it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most wonderful mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I decided on my career path, Two months of placements could not do what 30 minutes’ helping an accident victim did for me. This experience taught me that at times, the decisions are made for you—and that whatever happens is always for the best.

Text 1
M: How was your trip to London, Jane?
W: Very good, especially the weather there. The sun was shining brightly and there was no wind.
M: Yes, you went there just in the right season. It rains a lot during the autumn.
Text 2
W: I joined our country's new programme called Internet plus nursing services.
M: Really? Tell me more about it.
W: It was carried out in six provinces from February and it will run until the end of the year.
Text 3
M: I feel bad today. I have a sore throat and my nose is running. I don't want to go to school.
W: Sounds like you have a cold. OK. Have a good rest and I'll call your teacher to ask for leave.
Text 4
W: I suppose you've missed the last bus. Let me give you a ride.
M: Thank you. You are so kind. But Mary and I are going to take the subway home. It's convenient.
Text 5
M: Oh, look at all the mess! What happened here?
W: We threw a party last night. It was very late when it was over and I didn't clean it.
M: Then when will you clean it?
W: Right away.
Text 6
M: I don't think I'd recommend that hotel to anyone.
W: You can't expect luxury for that price. Anyway, it was easy to get into the city centre to see all the sights.
M: It was a good starting point for exploring, but the people working there weren't terribly helpful when we asked them for directions.
W: The lady on the reception desk was nice, and you must admit she gave us a room overlooking the garden at the back.
M: It's a shame about that tiny bathroom though. The beds could have been softer too.
W: Well, we should have read some reviews online before booking.
Text 7
W: So Jason, will you have a go at the competition for young video game designers then?
M: It'd be really cool if I could, but I don't know if I'm really up to it.
W: It's for 11 to 16yearolds, so it should be your sort of thing, don't you think?
M: It's more a question of whether I've got what it takes really.
W: But you know a lot about video games.
M: From the point of view of a player... yeah, absolutely... but as a designer, that's a really different thing. I'll definitely have a closer look at the competition rules though.
W: I've printed them off actually. You'd better have a look at them before you sign up for the competition.
M: I will. Thanks.
Text 8
W: So where should we start? This place is huge!
M: Why don't we check out the transportation exhibition?
W: Right! I really want to see the highspeed train that travels along on air.
M: Sounds interesting. But let's not miss the Reality Room. It's really cool. No matter where you are, you just put on a video hat and you can be in New York—walk the streets, skate through Central Park and you never even leave the room.
W: It's probably a lot safer to see New York that way. But I'd like to see the Genetic Engineering Room too.
M: What's that about? Sounds frightening!
W: Well, they've developed some new tomatoes. They are supposed to be very sweet and juicy, and they don't go bad as fast as normal tomatoes.
M: To be honest, I'm nervous when technology is mixed into our food.
Text 9
M: Can you tell me some interesting activities in the library?
W: Yes. We offer a lot of activities and the most popular one is Story Time for children. It takes place in the Children's Room on Thursday mornings at eleven.
M: Isn't there a family movie night?
W: Yes. But it's not at night anymore. We used to have Family Movies on Fridays when the library is open until nine, but now we have a different activity at that time, so we had to switch Family Movies to the weekend—Saturday afternoon.
M: How much do you charge for the movies?
W: They're all free. The movie starts at 2:30 in the Reference Room.
M: And what takes place on Friday evenings?
W: We've just started a weekly Lecture Series. We have a different speaker every week, and the lectures cover all different kinds of topics.
M: That sounds like something I'd be interested in. When does it start?
W: The lecture starts at 6:30 in the Meeting Room. But you'd better come early, or there will be no seats left for you.
M: I got it. Thanks.
