    “The institute will hld English, French, German, Russian and Japanese classes ... Each class will last fr ne hur a day except fr Sunday ... Candidates wh aspire t (有志于) learn freign languages can apply at the institute,” stated the Freign Languages Institute’s first enrllment (招生) advertisement in a newspaper n Sept 28, 1920.
    Sunds like just a nrmal ad? Nt exactly. The institute was where the stry f the Cmmunist Yuth League f China (CYLC) began.
    Over 100 years ag, the future leaders f the Cmmunist Party f China (CPC), including Chen Duxiu, funded the first cmmunist rganizatin in Shanghai. At that time, many yung peple went t the ffice f La Jeunesse (《新青年》) magazine – the center f the New Culture Mvement – t lk fr advice n hw t save the cuntry and the peple. Chen, funder f the magazine and leader f the mvement, gave them a warm welcme.
    Later, Chen asked Yu Xiusng, then 21, the yungest member f the rganizatin, t establish the first Scialist Yuth League (SYL, 社会主义青年团) in August 1920. Yu was appinted as secretary f the league.
    T educate mre yung peple, the league launched the institute. This institute, als the headquarter f the SYL, was less than 100 meters away frm the ffice f La Jeunesse.
