Prateek Sharma was born into a family of farmers. After 10 years of being a chief manager of Kotak Mahindra Bank,he did a good job and earned a good pay.But Prateek couldn’t continue the corporation life with ease,as his heart was always in farming. So he worked as a banker on weekdays and on weekends travelled 100 km to get to his 5-acre farm in Dhaba Khurd.
By the end of 2015,Prateek had set up a house on his farm to grow off-season vegetables.Prateek thought he’d quit his job once he was able to earn enough from farming, but this wasn’t an easy decision to make. This was because costs to grow these vegetables were very high, along with the fact that farmers weren’t a part of the value chain and thus couldn’t decide the price of their own vegetables.
Fortunately,Prateek met Vinay Yadav, another educated farmer. They then decided to start their own value chain and sell their vegetables and grains, while skipping the middlemen. The variety of vegetables they grew wasn’t enough,so they decided to form a group of farmers.
Once the plan was ready, the group was registered by the name of Farmer Producer Organization(FPO).However, the trial failed in the first year as most of the farmers were grain growers and had limited knowledge of growing vegetables. However, the largest reason was the switch from chemical to organic farming.
Luckily, once the soil was used to organic methods, the next round of crops were successful and the FPO had a good amount of produce. So at the end of 2017,Prateek finally quitted his job and devoted all his time to farming. Now he’s successful and recently his team has started two farmer resource centers at Dhaba Khurd and Nathrula Canj.
24.Why did Prateek have trouble continuing his life as a banker?

B.He almost never satisfied his boss.

C.The soil’s not adapting to organic farming.
D.The wrong ways of doing organic farming.

Two years ago,I set foot in Tanzania for the first time as a volunteer. And now,I’m writing this at my home in the middle of a village in Tanzania.I never thought that a six-week volunteer program could change my life so greatly, but it did!

The World Happiness Report,a United Nations agency report, measures(估量) how happy people are,and why.Norway is the happiest place on Earth—beating neighbour Denmark from the number one position.
Denmark,Iceland,Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last.Western Europe and North America took up most of the places at the top of table, with the US and UK at 14th and 19th.
The World Happiness Report mainly depends on asking a simple question of more than 1,000 people every year in more than 150 countries.“Imagine a ladder(梯子),with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom to 10 at the top,” the question asks.“The top of the ladder is the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder is the worst possible life for you.On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?”
The average result is the country’s score—from Norway’s 7.54 to the Central African Republic’s 2.69.But the report also tries to explain why one country is happier than another. It looks at reasons including economic strength(经济实力),social support, freedom of choice, and generosity.
This year’s report also has a text titled “Restoring(恢复) American Happiness”,which examines why happiness levels in the United States are falling, despite continually-increasing economic improvement.“The United States can and should raise happiness by solving America’s social problems—rising inequality and distrust—rather than focusing mainly on economic growth,” the authors said.
Jeffrey Sachs, the director of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which published the report, said President Donald Trump’s policies were likely to make things worse.

Rich and Famous
Twenty years ago the most common ambition of American children was to be a teacher, followed by working in banking and finance, and then medicine. But today’s situation is quite different. 36 Instead they most commonly say they want to be a sports star,a pop star,or an actor—in other words, they hope to become a celebrity.
According to experts, young people desire these jobs largely because of the wealth and the fame. 37 Let’s take athletes and singers as an example.Their careers are short-lived.Many athletes’ best time only lasts a few years and singers can have a very limited career. The field that was once the focus of their lives becomes something they have little or no involvement in.As a result, they’ll have a feeling of worthlessness and a lack of control. 38 The truth is quite simple:they have been so far removed from it for so long.
In spite of these disadvantages, there is greater ambition than ever among young people to achieve that status. They are not satisfied with just making a living—they want to be rich and famous.Globally, more and more TV shows provide talent competitions where winners can achieve their goals in just a few weeks or months. 39 They unrealistically believe that this lifestyle is easily obtained and leads to great satisfaction.
While many people argue that there is nothing wrong with having such ambitions, others feel that this trend will finally lead to dissatisfaction as more and more people are unable to reach their goals. 40 That means they ignore the simple fact that great effort is needed before success. As a result, many people won’t realize their childhood dreams, which could have a negative effect on their happiness.
A.The younger generation don’t favor these professions any more.
B.In many ways this has been brought about by the celebrity culture.
C.Unfortunately, they do not always have a positive effect on people’s life.
D.Besides,it can be difficult for them to adapt back to a normal everyday life.
E.People no longer have a sense of satisfaction once their goals have been achieved.
F.This quick way of gaining wealth and fame creates a celebrity culture among people.
G.The reason is that they don’t realize it takes talent and hard work to be rich and famous.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Two men, both seriously ill, shared the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the only window of the room. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their experiences in the army, and where they had been on vacation.Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up,he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods when his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activities and colors of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats.Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color.Grand old trees made everything around more attractive, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all these in great detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.Although the other man couldn’t hear the band,he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window pictured it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Finally,he would have the joy of seeing it for himself.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Slowly and painfully,he made his greatest possible efforts to look out of the window beside the bed.
“The man was blind and could not even see the wall.Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you,”the nurse answered.

It's always nice to have a little help around the house. But what if you could employ the assistance of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century?
That's the idea behind a new robot modeled after Albert Einstein. Called Professor Einstein and standing at just over a foot tall, this personal assistant can tell you the weather and keep track of your schedule like any other robots. With builtin WiFi, the Einstein robot has access to brain games, and can answer math problems and science questions. With natural language and speech processing, you can actually interact with Professor Einstein. And because the robot is connected to the Internet, it is constantly updated with new information.
To help get the perfect replica (复制品) of Einstein, the Hong Kongbased tech company Hanson Robotics turned to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the home of the Albert Einstein archives (档案). “We worked very closely with them to bring the product comarker,” said the company's Dr. Jeanne Lim.
The Einstein robot was introduced to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and was quickly hailed by those who saw it. “He became one of the breakout stars of the convention,” wrote Melia Robinson on Business Insider. “Crowds flooded into the company to have a look at the little guy.”
“Technology is often now very cold and socially isolating (孤立的),” explained David Hanson, the cofounder of the company behind the new robot, “By bringing an lively character into our physical world, we're humanizing (使人性化) the technology instead of dehumanizing the humans.”
As for Hanson Robotics, the company has been building humansize robots for over a decade. But this marks the company's first commercially available product. “Professor Einstein is just the start,” said Hanson. “We're witnessing the arrival of conversational robots that can walk in our world. It's a golden age of invention.”

C.He worries about a golden age for conversational robots.
D.He stays hopeful about the future of robot invention.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A New Robot Makes Humans Much Happier
B.The Golden Age of Invention Is Approaching
C.Albert Einstein Changes into an Assistant
D.Albert Einstein Helps to Humanize Robots

My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn't take care of the garden. I didn't want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can't believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty.
Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed, and I admitted Dad wanted a salad but the garden was a disaster. I didn't want to disappoint him so I went to the store. She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some vegetables.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile, “Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”
Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father's love of gardening.
5.Why did Christine originally promise she would do the gardening?
A.She was asked by her father to do it.
B.She was interested in growing vegetables.
C.She knew it was important to her father.
D.She wanted to improve her gardening skills.
6.Which of the following was a problem in the garden?
A.Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots.
B.Animals often dug holes in the garden.
C.The plants were given too much water.
D.The vegetables were marked incorrectly.
7.Why could Christine secretly use the storebought vegetables to make the salad?
A.Her mother helped her to buy the vegetables.
B.Her mother regularly helped her to make a salad.
C.Her fatber couldn't see the progress of the vegetables in his garden.
D.Her father went on a business trip at that time.
8.What did Christine learn from her experience of gardening?
A.Always get ready for a rainy day.
B. Don't be disappointed by bugs.
C.Working alone produces results.
D.Hard work can often be rewarding.

[2021·山东省济南市高三模拟]Few people doubt the value of developing students' thinking skills. A focus on critical thinking is common in education. In the Australian Curriculum, critical thinking and creative thinking are known as “general capabilities”. The US has a similar focus through their “common core”.
Many approaches to developing critical thinking are based on Philosophy for Children. One strategy that has a large impact on students' ability to analyse and evaluate arguments is argument mapping, in which a student's reasoning can be visually displayed by capturing the inferential pathway from assumption to conclusion. This type of argumentbased intellectual engagement can show high outcomes in terms of the quality of thinking in any classroom. Research also shows deliberate attention to the practice of reasoning in the context of our everyday lives can be significantly improved through targeted teaching.
Teachers at one high school in Australia, who have much training in critical thinking teaching methods, developed a task that asked students to determine Australia's greatest sports person. Students needed to construct their own criteria for greatness. To do so, they had to analyze the Australian sporting context, create possible evaluative standards, explain and justify why some standards would be more acceptable than others and apply these to their candidates. They then needed to argue their case with their classmates to develop criteria that were solid, defensible, widely applicable and produced a choice that seized significant and relevant aspects of Australian sport.
Researchers looking at the gains made in a single term of teaching critical thinking with argument mapping said the critical thinking gains measured are close to those that could be expected to result from three years of undergraduate education. Students who are taught to think well also do better on subjectbased exams and standardized tests than those who do not.
In terms of developing 21st century skills, which includes setting up students for lifelong learning, teaching critical thinking should be core business.
1.Which of the following can explain the underlined word “capturing” in Paragraph 2?
